camera quality indoor - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

Do any of you guys find the camera quality so bad indoors only and have alot of noise or do I have something wrong ??
My photos and vids are super outdoors with all lenses but inside my home at morning or night the pics have alot of noise even the viewfinder is very noisy and the videos are very bad .

I feel exactly the same way. I take a lot of pics inside the house in the evening with my kids, dogs, etc. and I'm really struggling with the lack of quality in that scenario. I have a pixel 3xl that I was originally planning on replacing with the s10 plus, but the pics from the pixel are so much better. The s10 photos are soft and muddy looking. I'm seriously considering just selling the s10.

So I think it must be something related to the software not the camera module
Even older Samsung mobiles with 1 cam only did not behave like that in indoor conditions

Don't get me wrong, the pics aren't horrible. Just not great or befitting of a 2019 flagship, or as good as the pixel. Which I think a lot of reviewers have said. Honestly, it seems like software, but I'm no expert.

Got to agree, feels the same as my s7 edge. lol

Because selling a second hand phone after one month of usage is easier and returns more value than just waiting for an update for a piece of hardware that is obviously not behaving like it should, right?
It's not the first phone that has disappointing picture and video results indoor after release, they all improved, just have some patience instead of making impulsive choices.

Sorry if I hurt your Samsung feelings. But I appreciate your advice on my impulsive nature here on the internet.
I've never really been overly impressed with Samsung's willingness or haste with which they make software improvements. The hardware is beautiful and I love almost everything about the phone. The camera is just a bit of a let down for me.

I just find these "I bought the phone yesterday but my 1998 canon takes better pics of my bedroom carpet so I'm gonna sell it tomorrow" incredibly stupid and consumerist, you won't die by waiting for an update.

I really appreciate your now apparent concern for my life. Thanks for that.
If you read the OP's post, and mine, we're commenting how the phone doesn't take great pics in indoor relatively low light situations. Maybe it's just me, but that seems to be a pretty popular place for every day photos of life, family, etc. and I was comparing to my recent personal experience with my pixel. Not quite the obscure analogy you're attempting to make. I see this topic is really personal and emotional for you as evidence by your posts and your veiled, or not so veiled, insults. That's cool, your passion is appreciated, but your comments could easily rub someone the wrong way. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, including you, but you may want to ease up on drawing conclusions on what people should do based on your own personal inclinations. Just my meager .02

Don't know what posts you've been checking around, but I never denied the camera being disappointing indoors, it actually sucks.
You don't know what "passion" or "insult" is if you easily go so defensive over this simple matter, I think you should indeed focus on your life, I personally couldn't care less about directly offending anyone here as I just said that it's easier to wait for an incoming update (already confirmed by Samsung) and then reconsider.
If it's still disappointing after the update you're free to sell it or snap in half and swallow it with regret, nobody's going to worry.

GCam apk is the only way to really get better photos indoors that I've came across for Samsungs.. Pixels have ruined me for indoor photography of moving objects. Outdoors this camera is amazing though.

Absolutely agree. I installed gcam and the indoor shots were noticeably better, IMHO. I think I installed an old apk though cause mine was having all kinds of issues. Didn't spend too much time messing with it.

Yes, same experience here. Here are comparison pics between Snapdragon S9+ and Exynos S10+.

Is there a gcam version for exynos?

Don't think so, as there's a bounty thread for just that. I have the snapdragon so didn't look into too much.

Indoor quality fixed with Gcam 6.1 port made for exynos from a developer on this great forums

And it shows that the hardware/lens is really good

My camera showdown! OPO vs Nexus5 vs i6+

Welcome to my camera comparison!
2/15/2015 - Updated to include the iPhone 4s, for people who were offended by comparing the flagship killer to a flagship which is newer and twice as expensive (this, despite all flagships being more expensive than the OPO, and the Nexus 6 for example—which uses the same sensor as the OPO—being both newer and more expensive).
Landscape
Great Lighting
Indoors Person
Indoors Fine Detail
All pictures were taken at highest quality with autofocus. For each scenario I provided a gallery of 8 shots:
- OPO AUTO = OnePlus One, stock camera, Auto mode
- OPO HDR = OnePlus One, stock camera, HDR mode
- OPO GOOGLE AUTO = OnePlus One, Google Camera, HDR disabled
- OPO GOOGLE HDR = OnePlus One, Google Camera, HDR enabled
- 6PLUS AUTO = iPhone 6 Plus, stock camera, HDR disabled
- 6PLUS HDR = iPhone 6 Plus, stock camera, HDR enabled
- NEXUS5 AUTO = Nexus 5, stock camera, HDR disabled
- NEXUS5 HDR = Nexus 5, stock camera, HDR enabled
My thoughts:
If I had to choose one, it would be the iPhone 6 Plus without a second thought. It opens in one second, has OIS and catpures an HDR shot in a split second, captures more low light detail in either mode regardless of overall lighting, and in general it captures fine detail better than the OPO (check the keyboard in the Indoor Fine Detail gallery) or, at worst, the same albiet with better color reproduction. Between the OPO with either camera app, and the Nexus 5, I find the Nexus 5 to be preferable because it has OIS which means I'm able to get more fine detail than the OPO despite the OPO's higher resolution, and further the Nexus 5 is able to pull more detail out of the highlights and shadows of shots that have extremes of both (like a foreground subject backlit by a bright sky). Overall the OPO camera is incredibly disappointing; It takes forever to take HDR shots or Clear Image shots, and I can't get consistently good shots in any mode with any camera app. What's more, the only time OPO doesn't seem like it has an 8MP shooter is in Clear Image mode, which is unfortunately plagued by being as inconsistent as any other shot by the OPO in any other mode with any other camera app. In dim-ish to low light, you'd be better off drawing a picture by hand than trying to capture anything useful with the OPO.
I've taken some really fantastic shots with the stock camera on my OPO, I honestly believe it's just a matter of knowing how to use it and playing to its strengths.

These camera shootouts and other comparisons have always been useless IMO. The OPO has consistently taken great photos for me; knowing the angles the camera needs to capture more light and using some common sense about where to take photos goes a long way. If being able to snap a photo anywhere is a must for you buy a DSLR

I'm not here to talk **** about the OPO camera, even if I do think it's terrible. I did the comparison for myself (and decided to publish it after the fact) precisely because I think it's terrible. So to me it's curious how people are happy to defend it. For example, your statement is the opposite of what a marketing team would want to say, and I'm sure it's the opposite of what smartphone camera software engineers aim for. These are intended to be point and shoot, not for people who "just know how." Per OPO's own ad, it's supposed to take "astounding shots, any time, day or night, without suffering the problems of other cameras." Without a doubt the nighttime performance of this camera is horrendous, but even it's automatic performance falls short. The fact that you have to wrestle it into submission even during reasonable conditions is a testament to how far they missed the mark with this.

You were claiming you're making an objective comparison yet you were biased from the beginning. Nice try though. You probably half assed your way to get the results you expected.
Using marketing ads to form an opinion is dumb, they'll all exaggerate. Use the camera figure out it's strengths and enjoy it. I don't have the luxury of a secondary phone. Came from a G2 though and it took similarly good photos. Still had to figure out angles and right conditions to take shots, as well as a steady hand helps. Only camera that I've had that was downright abysmal was the Nexus 4.
Next time you wanna compare phones do it for yourself to make a choice on which phone to keep or whatever reason you did it. There are tons of sites like gsmarena that do these comparisons. Once you start comparing anything between phones instead of liking something for what it can offer, it never ends

I'm not trying to defend it, it has flaws, like any smartphone camera does. For example, Samsung shots are over-saturated and look awful. Nexus 5 HDR shots are too aggressive and look ridiculous (but then again, 99% of smartphone users have no idea what HDR is, how it works, how to use it, or even when you should be using it, they just use it because they think the result "looks cool"). Like the other fella said, forget whatever the marketing guys say because they're paid uber dollars to make you want something. They exaggerate, they lie.

Thanks for your comparison. To really compare the picures, I think you guys should download them and watch them on your PC.
I will do so later, so I won't comment on them now.
Speedwise I can say, the opo camera from latest OTA opens in one second too.
I made a small collection of pictures where I think they are caught really good. These are by far not the best motives, just some examples to show what
can be achieved with a smartphone camera. All taken with the standard camera app, some are auto, some hdr, I think it is visible which are which...
Would you call them incredibly disappointing?
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/72qofxzgo2d9tjg/AAARPpNIsAQFkFPFAK3k87joa?dl=0
and no, these were not the best shots taken out of 20 made, but basically the only ones I took in these situations, especially at the Harry Potter expo which was really crowded!
Download them, as they are badly compressed when opened through dropbox online.
I can't believe people are so down on this comparison just because of its conclusions. Especially because I agree 100%. Nexus 5 camera was better than the OPO's, which is a huge disappointment to me.
All this nonsense about finding the right angle, etc, is just that - nonsense. Yes, it is good to know the limitations of the hardware and do your best to overcome them, but that doesn't mean the limitations are OK and you shouldn't acknowledge them/"stop complaining".
Both on XDA and the OPO forums there is always a huge amount of backlash against any criticism of this phone and the company, and I think that's really terrible. The OPO is a good phone but it isn't perfect and it and the company are certainly not above reproach.
The OPO camera subsystem in particular was poorly designed. 13mp with 6 lenses sounds great, but without OIS it falls down against camera's whose spec sheets don't read as nice.
The iPhone 6+ should be expected to take better pictures, being a generation newer and 2.5x the cost. This isn't exactly a level playing field.

The comparison is objective. My opinion doesn't bear on the actual content of any given picture, and the fact that reviewers tend to agree with my assessment is just coincidence. I went in open minded because, unlike you, I do have the luxury of having other devices. Here's the thing: almost any camera can take a good shot "sometimes" or "if you use it right", but the reason marketers don't say "this is an incredible smartphone camera sometimes, if you use it right" is because that's basically the same as saying, "as a flagship killer smartphone camera, this misses the mark."

What if the iPhone 4s on iOS 6—cheaper and older by far—performs better, or at least favorably? What would you say then? And what about the Nexus 5—older and the same price (cheaper used)?
Anyways, I should have clarified in the OP that I did this comparison for myself because I own the phones and it seemed the OPO camera was terrible compared to my memory of the Nexus 5, so I wanted to test my memory against reality. I only published it after the fact in case others might find value in it.

Appreciated, but of course we don't know how other cameras would have performed...
I originally came from a Nexus 5, and I agree that for general day to day use I would rather have the Nexus 5 camera. OIS makes a huge difference, and the google camera software works well, however it is quite limited when it comes to features (like setting exposure times and what not, this is where the OPO camera is better). Really not surprised that the iPhone 6+ delivers the best results all around, as this was the consensus among internet reviews.
I honestly think that the OPO's camera performance is moreso a result of poor software optimization more than anything (other than the lack of OIS). I have used CM for previous phones (samsungs, HTC) and I always found picture quality to be worse on CM than on stock software. And for those bashing the comparison, if you are gonna call yourself a "flagship killer", be prepared to be compared to said flagships.
A bunch of crap.
Had a N5 before and the picture quality can't compare. Learn to take pics and don't blame the lack of OIS.
The OPO camera is one of the best ones on Android's out there. Everyone say's that, but there is always some lame cheap ass with a lame crappy test trying to prove everybody is wrong.
And yes my opinion is not gonna change based on biased tests. I had two of the devices compared up there and clearly the N5 camera is a piece of crap on quality.
IPhone > Top tier Samsungs > OPO > lots of devices > Nexus

I feel like saying "learn to take pics" doesn't make sense - if the OP doesn't know how to take pics, their incompetence is constant over all devices ... in which case the comparison is still valid :highfive:
I didn't come here to defend the OPO camera, I've made a bunch of ****ty pictures with it myself, but in this test I actually like the OPO pictures the most. I downloaded them to check if maybe it's only because I'm looking at a downsized version, but even so they really seem the best.
I actually think this is one of the most OPO favoring comparisons I have seen.
You did name them correct, right?

Ya they're named properly, I was very careful about that (I'm sure the metadata will confirm as well). Anyway you seem reasonable, you even gave the pictures a close inspection; and I'm not here to fight either, so I'm curious whether you feel the OPO outperformed objectively (and if so, where), or if you just like its pictures best subjectively?
Off topic: I've done the iPhone 4s pictures too now, I'll upload them tomorrow. Spoiler alert: 4s does a damn fine job for a 3.5 year old phone without HDR on a 2.5 year old OS (I keep it on iOS 6 because **** an iPhone 4s on iOS 7 or higher). Figured I'd do it for the haters saying its unfair to compare the OPO to newer, more expensive devices.

Is the camera this bad?

I've heard too many negative reviews about the camera and that it can be a deal breaker..so which camera is better iphone 6's camera or the axon 7's camera?
Bought the phone because previous one was stolen few days before I went traveling in China. Been more than happy with the pictures it takes. Panorama is cool too. It struggled with low light, but it improving noticably with every update.
Uploaded a few pics from a national park in China for you. You be the judge. All pics were made with auto mode.
https://apexalpha.stackstorage.com/index.php/s/NZeWb0ifRNf02aM
I have to say though. The iPhone costs $300 more. If you care so much go for the Galaxy S7 for camera (and Android)
Actually not that bad
I remember hearing tons of negative reviews on the camera and being worried that it wasn't going to be that good but after using the phone for about a week I can honestly say the camera is pretty good. It does struggle a bit in low light, though but that's simply because of the amount of megapixels. In my opinion, some reviewers are just a bit picky

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P and the Axon 7 camera just doesn't compare, especially in low light. The 6P had a great camera. That being said, since B27 came out things have improved noticeably and while the camera still isn't ad good as the 6P, it's more usable now and does produce decent enough shots in low and pretty good ones in good light.

Low light scenes are very challenging for the camera. ZTE really need to improve the HDR processing, where it can't touch 2015's Nexus phones and where it trails the much cheaper Honor 7.
There's not much sun where I am and I'm really noticing the difference.
You can certainly get better-looking results by playing with white balance in manual mode but that won't help you if you want to snap a darker foreground without blowing out all the background detail - a trick the Nexus phones' HDR+ excels at. I know they are deadly slow but I'd be happy to put up with much longer exposure times if it meant better pictures.
Could you please provide some selfie snaps as I'm kindda of a selfie guy?
Also I currently have the iPhone 5 so if the axon's camera is worse than the iphone 5 I might go with the oneplus 3 even though I hate its 1080p screen

Lgg6! Is it worth buying?

Hi guys!
I've owned g2, 3, 4, 5 and v10 and 20.
I really like lg phones but I got a bit disappointed on my g5.
Has anyone bought g6 and if you did what's your first impressions on the phone?
Camera, battery life etc..
Thank you!
I've had mine since Wed night and so far, I really like it. The deciding factor for me was the promotions with the purchase through Sprint, which included a Google Home and 49" 1080p TV and the placement of the finger print reader. I previously had S7 Edge and I think I liked the bright colors and true blacks on the S7 screen more, but the G6 screen is by no means a disappointment. The colors are more accurate than the AMOLED screens and it is really clear plus the finger print reader works WAY better than the S7 did and it's quick. The G6 feels solid and it's easy to hold. I feel the speaker is decent but not great. As for battery life, it's too hard to tell at this point because "doze" learns behavior and usually takes a few days to really optimize battery life, but out of the box I would say decent so far, considering I'm on it all the time LOL. I also feel the camera is better than the S7 and I'm going to really get use out of the wide-angle lens. I do not regret the choice at this point. I've had LG "G" series phones in the past and feel it's the best one by far. I prefer Google Assistant over Bixby since it's has the google knowledge base behind it and it already works with so many other smart home devices.
If you are all about specs, then S8 is probably the way to go because it's got the new generation processor.
That's really helpful thanks!
I don't mind specs. I'm currently on xiaomi mi max and just figured out that specs mean nothing!
I really prefer lg's camera over samsung's and I'm glad to know its good.

In low light the camera struggles. Any motion in the image turns into a blur. The shutter speed is entirely to slow in low light but theres hope an update is coming soon. Other than that the phone is incredible. Battery has been amazing. 6 1/2 hours screen on time every single day.

Totally agree about the low light. In normal use the camera is outstanding and wide angle is so useful. I'm seeing others getting 7 hours SOT which is remarkable for a 3300 battery. I haven't really turned anything off on mine as far as settings go so for me 6 1/2 is way more than I expected.

I don't mind specs. I'm currently on xiaomi mi max and just figured out that specs mean nothing!
I really prefer lg's camera over samsung's and I'm glad to know its good.
I've read some reviews saying that the camera is a disappointment over the past cameras and I got a bit worried!

HI There! Just wanted to share my experience so far. I'm coming from an S7 and have used LG phones in the past. The user experience in general has been great. I love the screen, love the feel in the hand and I really enjoy software experience too.
BUT - The camera is not good. I have a little boy, so I literally take about 20 photos a day - So far this camera has been really disappointing. For this reason I will sell the phone and get something else.
I also received a really weird error / phone warning earlier today, which is actually detailed here if you wanted to take a look: http://g.co/ABH
edit: sorry I didn't explain why I don't love the camera. Colours look pretty good, however there is a massive issue with focus. Even just the slightest movement causes the picture to blur. This is very noticeable with the wide angle lens, which obviously doesn't have OIS, however this issue is still present with the primary shooter. If i didnt rely on the camera so much, I'd really love this phone. However I'd rather have a phone that i didn't love, for the sake of good photos.

That's weird I've never seen seen that before.
Man, I don't know what to think. On one hand I really want to get this phone as I held the S8 and BB and really don't like the fingerprint sensor location or curved screen. Those SOT reports some of you have is amazing! On my S6 I'm lucky to get 2hrs! So mostly I want the G6 because of a beefy battery, flat screen, and better camera (the OIS has been wonky in my S6 since early in it's life...I have to shake/smack the phone to get it to kick in and actually focus). But this motion blur has me a bit wary. I guess every phone choice is a compromise of some sort or another.
I can also confirm that the camera has issues with low light and movement. I've got a 2 year old, and virtually every shot of her is blurry unless I take it in full daylight. I upgraded from the LG G4, and I never had such a hard time getting a focused picture of her before. (For example, I had to take 20 pictures of her on a swing set to get 1 in focus.. shutter speed was reporting at 1/120. My G4 NEVER had an issue where her entire body was blurry and usually anything over 1/60th came out clean). Low light is also somewhat relative. I have a lot of issues indoors and at dusk, neither of which I would ordinarily consider low light situations and both of which my G4 handled better. I've been playing around with manual mode and have found that I can usually get a clean picture in low light and with movement there, so I'm mostly confident it's a software issue that can be corrected (though I understand the V20 has similar issues and is now out 6 months without a software fix....)
Overall I still love the phone and the wide angle is AMAZING when it is bright outside, so I'm just relying on my wife's S7 to handle the low light and fast motion pictures for now. If you don't have a second camera option though, I might be hesitant to buy the G6 until more testing is done and a solution is found to the blurry issue.
I had G6 for few days and i wasnt totally happy with it first but its coming around and few changes in settings are making it feel more snappy.
First thing, the phone feels great in hand and screen is top notch. Coming from LG G3, phone feels smaller and easier to hold. Also, i really like the notification and ringer sounds from LG.
Out of the box, G6 didnt feel any faster than LG G3 at first but few settings in debug option(turned off animation) and battery optimization ignore options, its feels like a new phone.
I'll have to see how much battery usage will suffer from these changes but it looks like LG G6 is in battery optimization mode as default. I've turned on "ignore battery save optimization" for chrome and camera, and other apps i normally use everyday. I can notice ES file explorer opening faster and camera auto zoom reacting slightly faster now.
Not worth it

yeah I can concur with the bad camera, just recieved my G6 from ATT today, and it only lasted 3 hours, I have been using a IPhone 7 plus for almost for week after not using IOS for 6 years and I loved the feel and the screen but the rear camera and the front camera suck, the Note 5 I had took better pics and selfies by huge margin, so I had to take the G6 back, if it took the pics like my old note 5 did I would have kept it, but I take lot of pics and i want something that takes crisp pics, so maybe S8 might be in my future :good:

There is software update scheduled for April 7th -Tmobile. Hopefully some of the camera issues will be addressed.
My V20 didn't take blurry or grainy pictures. I don't know.... I really like this phone but pictures are really important to my wife and I. I don't want to be forced to live in the "your pictures suck!" category.

I Had the v10 and v20 before too, and I can`t believe LG would send a flagship out to market and have so many complaint about the camera, I`m with you..... the V20 took a lot better pics.
So I guess, the software update did not fix the blur issue.
The blurry pictures aren't a software issue. The main problem I see is that LG removed laser auto-focus from the G6, so technically the G5/V20 cameras are vastly superior when it comes to focusing on objects (especially when considering macro images). Also, LG chose to over-saturate colors resulting in less color-accurate images, not to mention lower sensor size = lower detail images (16/20MP G5&V20 vs 12MP G6). Downgraded cameras aside, the only other big gripes I have with the G6 are no removable battery and that they removed the IR blaster and notification LED. Having the older SOC isn't so bad these days as the SD82x series is still very fast. If I didn't already own the G5 (which I am very happy with for the most part) I might consider the G6, but probably would opt to wait for the V30 instead if it wasn't an urgent situation.

Reviews of the OnePlus 5 from Real Users

My question is, can I get some real reviews from real users, not the YouTube paid reviews. Some people should have it for about 2 weeks now, and I wanna hear what you think. I've read where the camera is horrible, and others say it's OK. I'm buying the phone this Thursday, or next Thursday and am looking for some honesty.
How I typically use my phone is all day, everyday. It's a bit of an ADD thing where I have to keep myself busy. Games, XDA, more games. I play VainGlory a lot, and it's pretty heavy on my phone. Does anyone else play this, and how does the 5 perform while playing?
Can anyone post some pictures they took of scenery, buildings, etc... I'll post some of mine taken from my Nexus 6P, edited in Snapseed. The camera is a big point for me.
Please and thank you!!
I currently own OP5 and previous phone was Pixel XL.
If a camera is a big point for you, there are better options for sure such as Pixel , iPhone and U11.
If gaming, then this phone will perform way better than 6p or any other phone. 835 CPU, GPU and 8 RAM means solid performance.
Camera is great in good lighting; mediocre in low light. 1080 Video good and 4K video average.
Battery life for me has been incredible! Fast charging is awesome too.
OP5 is a fantastic phone and I would recommend to anyone. I say this even though I plan on returning OP5 and going back to my Pixel XL. Why? Camera and smoother overall experience in Pixel. OP5 is faster for sure.
I hope this helps. It was not an easy decision for me.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5000 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I don't take too many videos, but I definitely like having the option of taking a good one. Gaming is a big selling point for me as well. As for the camera... I'm kind of hoping that some sort of fix is released in an update for whatever the issue is.
It definitely helps though. The price is also a factor, as I'm thinking I'll be able to sell my 6p for 325-350, with all the cases I have and the pretty awesome condition I've kept it in.
I've also haven't had a *new* phone in years. Last one I had was S6 Edge and I ended up having to give it to my Now Ex-girlfriends mom since it was on her plan and we broke up. I had it for like 3 weeks. So, a new phone under warranty would be pretty sweet to have.
Im going to buy it, I made up my mind. If anything, and the camera is way worse than my 6p and they don't release an update I can just sell it, right? Yup.
Bye-bye Nexus.
I'll break up a short review into a few sections.
Design - 9/10
I really like the build quality. The phone looks very similar to a certain device, but I don't mind this. The matte black color looks great and the device, while a bit thin, is the perfect weight (although I am going to buy a case as soon as they become available.) Although I do wish the camera was in the center because when you lay the device down, the protruding camera lens is what your device lays on and makes the device not lay completely flat. The good news is the camera lends is made out of sapphire so durability is there.
Performance | Daily Tasks - 9/10
I have read all about the "Jello effect." This does appear on my device, but it's very minimal and I don't see it as a problem. I did recently watch a video where it was a lot worse in that video. People on social media tend to be hive-mind associated so a lot of negativity tends to spread like wildfire while the positive items are left out of the spotlight. I think the device is extremely snappy and I have noticed the phone doesn't even get warm while playing Pokemon Go for long spurts at a time. No sluggish performance at all.
Wireless Connectivity | WiFi | 4G - 8/10
Cellular Performance
This aspect is generally very important to me. When I compare it to my brother's GS8 on T-Mobile US, we both have a consistent experience in strong signal areas. The OP5 doesn't support 4x4 MIMO on the 4G/LTE side, but it does support 256QAM and 3xCA which is more than enough for the typical power user. Overall, my brother's S8 tends to get slightly less than 10% more speeds on LTE than I do (for comparison, I hit 115Mbps in a spot whereas the GS8 hit 125Mbps.) However, I will note that edge-of-signal, the S8 does win outright. In a few areas where LTE signal is weak (sub -120dBm RSRP), the OnePlus 5 will tend to drop to HSPA or even Edge whereas the S8 will maintain a usable signal. In other words, VoLTE'ers, you may experience more dropped calls when venturing about in weak LTE areas.
WiFi Performance
The OP5 supports 2x2 MIMO and wireless AC so 5Ghz networks is vastly improved over the OP3/OP3T in regards to WiFi coverage/performance. In comparison, I can pull up to 540mbps in a corner of my house on the OP5 whereas the OP3T will only be able to pull 32mbps on the same network. Oneplus has really went above and beyond in terms of WiFi antenna design and has consistently matched the GS8's WiFi performance (Note: I do not have Gigabit internet so I wan't able to test higher-end speeds.)
Battery - 9/10
I am coming from a Le Pro3 (which is one of the best devices for battery), and I'm not too concerned with what I'm getting on the OP5. I am consistently getting through the typical work-day with around 30-40% juice left after a few hours of screen time. If I need a quick charge, Dash charging is there. I will mention that I wish Dash Charging wasn't so proprietary. Because almost all of my current chargers are Qualcomm QC which aren't compatible with the Oneplus. Although it'll still charge the device, just not rapidly like Dash would.
Camera - 7/10
I am not a photographer by any means and a good camera doesn't necessarily sell me on a device by itself. I will say though that while the pictures are not as good as what you'd get on the GS8, they are pretty good shots and I honestly can't see people looking at your facebook pictures and thinking "wow, whatever camera took this picture sucks." I am quite content with the camera because it is better than a mid-range device, but worse than a flagship.
Software/Customization - 10/10
This is the main reason I went with the OnePlus device. Oxygen OS is so smooth and AOSP-like. The nearly bloatless experience and ability to change the theme/accents of your device are amazing. That, and I know the community will be behind some massive developments for this device so I can satisfy my flashing urges as they come up. It all just works.
Sound/Speakers - 9/10
I would have preferred stereo speaker setup, instead of mono speaker. Still, I would say I have been very impressed with the mono speaker on the bottom with the amount of quality and loud sounds that come from it. Music in the car over Bluetooth/Android Auto also works great and is very clear sounding. I actually flashed the Viper/Arise sound mod and disabled it shortly after because stock sounds that good (I don't play around with the Viper/Arise settings too much, so maybe I can improve it but to me there's not much left to be desired.) Voice Calls, people are loud and clear.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend the product to a friend!
Man the phones on point. I went hard on my op5 & have yet to hit 34 °c I play the phone for long stretches so not worrying about my phone getting to hot is my favorite upgrade so far. The battery for sure last longer than the 3t but the 3t charges about 10 minutes faster
My phone was delivered on the Friday after the key note and have used this as my daily driver. My most recent phone was the Samsung s7e, but gave to my wife as I found it too slow (and I really wanted to try a one plus 5).
Initial impressions are similar to the (honest) reviews:
1. Damn this thing is quick
2. Damn the fingerprint reader is quick
3. Damn that charges quick
3. Oh, the camera isn't quite as good as it was hyped
I think it looks "fine" (i.e I couldn't care less what it looks like).
Battery life has been good, at least comparable to a 6 month old SGS7e (I bought that second hand) but not as good as my old Sony z3c.
The camera is good, don't get me wrong, and it can take better shots than the Samsung, but it's not as consistent. Low light isn't as good (but again, the Samsung is a very high bar). I'd say that 90% of my photos come out fine first time. It's very quick to take photos though (if Oneplus wanted a "speed" theme to come through in this device then they certainly succeeded)
1080p video is very good. Surprisingly good. Ok 4k recording lacks stabilisation, but hey, do people bother to record in this resolution? (I suppose that do, but I sure as hell don't). They've also said that 4k EIS will come in an update.
The screen is very good. Having had the S6 and S7e, I've experienced excellent screens (i.e. high resolution) but really don't see the point for 99% of the time (I played with vr for a couple of days about 12 months ago so I really do mean 99%). 1080p is absolutely great for a 5.5" screen.
My only complaints have been:
1. Jelly (yes, either I'm susceptible to seeing it or my device has it)
2. Camera not as good as hyped
3. Some vague software oddities which I'm sure will be sorted (notification issues with eBay)
I'll post up some photos...
Some photos #shotonaoneplus
The best thing about OnePlus 5 is support from this community. I ordered on the conference day and there was TWRP and root solution available before this phone even arrived to my home. Another great thing is overall performance, clean OS, no bloatware.
Time for bad things. It is always bad sign when the company behind any device lies to you. They lie about camera peformance, they lie about screen issues... I wonder what will be next. Had I waited few days and seen how OnePlus acts, I would not buy it again.
Still I have it, so let's talk about user experience. I am switching to OnePlus 5 from my 4 years old OPPO Find 7, so this is my point of reference.
Form factor. The phone is a bit slippery and uncomfortable to grip. It has some sort of additional sharp line on the edge, and I ordered a cover to make it feel better. Other than this, it looks great and sexy. Shame it is not original design, but it is still good if you don't care about such things (I personally don't).
Screen. Screen has great colors and real blacks. It doesn't have the best resolution but just looks better than 2K IPS of Find 7. Use some dark wallpaper and you will be in heaven. At the same time you have this jelly effect and before I got used to it, it felt wrong. If you are motion sick, you should stay away from this phone.
Camera. The only good thing I can say about camera is its tonal range. You get all the colors instead of washed whites when you shot something with high contrast. At the same time I have seen way more details on the Find 7, which is four years old than on the OnePlus 5. Maybe it is poor compression of images, maybe it is some de-noising algorithm... anyway when you zoom in, you will see only blur in the image. Also, the telephoto camera is almost never used indoors (easy to check - cover one lens and see yourself which lens your phone is using) and used outdoor only when light is perfect (hello sun). When you click this magical 2x zoom in your camera app you will newer know whether you are doing software zoom loosing even more details or actual optical zoom... which even in best case is software-processed.
OS. Is great. Clean, fast android. Easy to root, easy to mod.
Battery life. Mixed. It will give you a full day, easily, but also drops significantly when you don't use the phone. Still, you have the DaSH/VOOC fast charge, so that's not a big issue.
Summary - this phone is great when you love messing with your phone, you are going to try custom rooms, you need root and great community support. It should be your choice if you with to have hardware that has enough power to stay with you for years. If you are looking for "clearer photos" look somewhere else. This is outward lie, and camera peformance is just average. It is also not a device for you if you must have the latest technology in hand or a very decent screen.
It is also not a steal anymore. You pay a bit less than premium range and you get a bit less then premium quality. Consider what you are looking for, and if your boxes are matched go for it.

I've never played that game but I play some games (the Idolmaster rhythm games) that are pretty heavy and made my Nexus 6 very sad. They run very smoothly at highest settings on the 1+5, and thanks to the massive amounts of ram, I can switch between several games with no problem.
The one complaint I have is the placement of the speaker. If you are playing a game landscape orientation your hand will keep covering it. Big problem when playing rhythm games.

Those are more than acceptable pics for a smartphone. I don't expect DSLR quality, and it looks like it could be an improvement over my 6p.
I really appreciate everyone's responses. They all are very insightful, and definitely put my mind at ease about the purchase.

Haha, true that. I might say that camera performance means a lot to me. But I have no actual "training" in being a photographer, or what is supposed to look like what. I just like taking pictures for myself, and I throw em up on Instagram. I use a lot of my pictures for wallpapers for my phone, mainly.
If anything, the better the phone is performing at games the better it would be for me, and this sounds like a beast. I'll be doubling my ram, and storage capacity so I'll be more than happy at that fact alone. Haha
Edit: I hope this post stays near the top for anyone on the fence about the purchase. I was just thinking about you're only hearing so many users complaining about the phone, but how many other users out there that are completely satisfied.
I bought it just an hour after the event, and I'm returning it tofay. I love taking pictures with my phone and I don't like op5 photos at all. I'm sending it back this week before the 14-day period is over, I'm moving to the S8 which I found at the same price...
I just hate how it deals with low-light and with colour, in particular in the details, which are just awful. I come from three and an half years with the Nexus 5, which had OIS and an awesome HDR. In this phone, HDR pics are way too noisy and sometimes colours look much worse than non-HDR photos.
Dual camera, horrible photos I'd say
I was really excited about this phone, so I'm very disappointed. I know they might fix it in the future, but I don't feel like trusting OnePlus seeing how they are dealing with the OP3 update and with the jelly effect
P.S. Sorry for bad English, I'm new to the forum world

Nice pics
Here are some pics I couldn't update earlier. You can see how bad the camera works in some conditions (like in the tree in two of the photos, which looks very unreal). Also in low light HDR is too noisy and I had to take twice the photo in the square and still I couldn't get a sharp image. Also you can see some artifacts in the two road pics. This is what convinced me to send this phone back, I take lots of pics and my old Nexus 5 worked better in all of these conditions
Edit: I might sound crazy, but look at the details

I figured I would take one picture and edit in Snapseed to see how that pans out. I'm posting both the original and edited.
Honestly, I don't think I'll be upset at all for the quality. I like it. The pro mode will be fun as well to play with,
Had a great time in NY with it this past weekend.
I have to say that I love the phone. I have an s8+ too and I actually don't miss it at all. I bought the LG G6 last month an lasted 1 day with it and some would, well do argue that it's a better phone than the s8.
What I like: The performance. That phone is fast in every aspect. The best example I can give is the setup. I have 161 apps. It took 2 and a half hours to download on the s8+. Guess how fast it was on the OP5 25 minutes. I've never see that before.
The screen is fine, the camera is no prize winner but no slouch either. I'm sure SW updates can make it better. The sound is good.
What I don't like: So far it's that damn screen that flips to landscape for no reason.
I didn't think of returning the phone until I saw the thread with all the people whining about the most trivial things.
The way I see it is. If the camera really matters to you. S8+, Pixel XL, U11. If not, by all means. You cannot go wrong with this. 8gb of ram 128 GB of storage and this community. Your kids can use it 6 years from now it will still be a top contender.

Camera on this phone is absolute garbage

S20+ 4G Exynos variant.
All I see are oversharpened, overexposed, oversaturated, messy photos.
I am coming from a Pixel 2, granted, but my God this phone is 3 generations newer. I am basically forced to use the 64 MP mode in order to get a decent photo. Night mode is pretty much useless as well.
How do you find the photos and which phone are you coming from?

Can't agree more! This phone camera is useless!!! Literally! Even with the 64 MPx the photos are not up to the level they have to be. I had Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 - both phones are hundreds of times better than this one. Can't believe that i spend money to buy it. Even that I watched a lot of reviews before buying it. Starting to thing that pretty much all the reviews are paid by Samsung. My last Samsung was S7 and back then I promised myself not to go back with the brand again. I deeply regret that now and reconfirm that I was right not to choose Samsung again.

Yes, I compared the snapdragon and exynos versions and in almost all cases you can clearly see the difference.
The exynos version is really inferior.

After sometimes testing the s20+
- Overexposed: most time i have HDR activated, why i haven't problems with that
- Saturated images: the default display of the screen is already set to "vivid", on my pc they seem better.
- Oversharpened, right..
I would have preferred to have more manual control without having to go through the raw pro mode:
- Rendered slightly grainy rather than too smooth, oil-painted
- Manual control of jpeg compression, better quality image files
‐ Sharpness adjusted according to the subject photographed: more sharpness for a landscape, less for a portrait
- Have the ability to use the raw format for the ultra wide angle lens
Sorry for my english
I have the Snapdragon. Only problem I have really noticed is I have a hard time getting the phone to focus on things up close. Like I tried to take a picture of the front and back of an insurance card thx other day while it was laying on the counter, and the camera just couldn't figure it out. I had to close the camera a couple times and come back in before it focused.
At the lowest sensitivity, at 40 iso, the rendering is without texture, it's too smooth!

Can't agree more! This phone camera is useless!!! Literally! Even with the 64 MPx the photos are not up to the level they have to be. Simply not true. I have tested the Mi Note 10 vs the [email protected] 64MP and it got destroyed, even with GCAM.
Did you turned off bixby optimizer?

Its the opposite, anandtech review says exynos variant has an upper hand compared to snapdragons this year.
anandtech must have been drinking then.

So you pick youtube video with old firmware, of semi pro reviewer, vs the best on the planet? yeah, no.
Oh, wow. Why are all these folks having these issues? I haven't noticed anything wrong yet.

These are not "issues", they only compare it with the snapdragon and seeing from the reviews, it's a lot (15%-20%)better.
I would not go that far to call the exynos camera ****, but the snapdragon-version does look better.
There's even a petition. https://www.change.org/p/samsung-stop-selling-us-inferior-exynos-phones

Post some comparisons of your pixel2 and s20 so we can compare these "garbage" photos.
Snapdragon S20+ here. The camera is not "absolute garbage". It's not Pixel quality, but it's better than 90% of everything else.
I always find these threads hillarious
If you don't like it get something else it's no harm done is it..
I've really got a point with smartphones where what someone likes isn't what someone else does.

And because you say so, how this should change my opinion? You are trying to convince me that your opinion is more valuable and correct than mine... Wrong approach buddy. Here we are expressing our POV.

You got PM.
Being in lockdown really does not show the S20+ in it's best light. I have been taken fewer pictures most have have been in medium to low light and of my kids or cats and have been really disappointing. Even the slightest bit of movement results in a soft or blurry image. I switched back to my 4 XL last Friday (So glad I never sold it!) and the difference is night and day.
Such a shame as I really really like the S20+ as a device, I just cannot trust the camera right now.
My S20 camera is great and provide awesome photos, you must have missed something somewhere (in good lightning, in low light.. it's... yeah, no.)
hell i don't even know how to use the 64mp camera lol
