Which version (4 or 6GB RAM) has better camera sensors? - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

I'm looking to purchase the Zenfone Max Pro M1 and was wondering which version (4 or 6GB RAM) has better camera sensors and with GCam support/compatibility?

Of course, go for 6 GB it has 16+5 MP setup with better apparature.

Gcam doesn't work on 6gb regardless of what version you try, capture button greys out after few clicks, sound quality is really poor on headfones. Camera and screen is below average and design is really outdated.
Only thing that is good in phone is super smooth to use on stock os and great battery life, rest sucks. I'd suggest go for note 7 or note 7 pro. Hope this helps.

Is there a stable GCam version for the 6GB variant?

Yes, I have read the GCam threads in the apps section and most are saying there is green tint in the front camera, capture button greys out and app force closes, is this the same for the 4GB version too?
I like the Zenfone Max Pro M1 due to the 5000mAh battery whereas the Note 7/Pro only has 4000mAh.

Their is just 45minute screen on time differnce between azmpm1 and RN7p
My advice would be go for RN7p or azmpm2
BTW the 4GB model camera is somewhat inferior without Gcam the quality of images is very poor

I think the screen on time will be more than an hour as the M1 has slightly smaller screen and 1000mAh more battery as I don't game on the phone, only browsing and social media apps.

I know the stock camera app isn't that good even though Asus released a lot of updates relating to the camera but is there a stable GCam version for the 4GB variant?

@Camack , I've 3GB variant so I can't help you on that.
But if you are planning to purchase AZMP M1, then my suggestion would be go for newer piece like AZMP M2 or redmi N7pro or any other you wish. :good:

Just to confirm, this is the GCam version you are using (GCam-5.1.018-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V8.3b1)?
There are no green tint in the front camera, capture button greys out and app force closes problems?

Maybe they are using good sensor now after much criticism.
Combined with 6 inch display and poor camera sensor
my phone was performing worse than redmi 4
But it has too much devlopment although after some time battery feels like it is of 4000ma

Yes

What I experienced is the opposite. Gcam works on the 6GB variant, but not the 4GB variant(which I returned later).
This Youtuber shares the same result too.

In 6gb version gcam versions starting with 5 . are working fine . no issues at all except slow-motion ,, the issues are with gcam version 6 . some versions from some developers are working fine everything is ok like nightsight ar stickers , but some blackout will occur during usage like shutter button failed to capture green tint issues are solved ,. but its working fine in after we clear the cache of the app . if we sent the log to those developers may be they can fix these issues . right now I am not using gcam because camera2api not able to activate it in pie beta .
6GB Version has better camera and the stock camera is better in daylight and some scene .
after pie there is a performance bump and battery usage time increased . when i purchased i got around 6 hr of screen on time , now i am getting around 9 hrs and 2 day standby with remaining 20 or 10 left ,
the issues with the beta is
less output on speakers
no camera2api
some UI glitches and app crashes .
sound got changes while we switches into apps .eg if we are watching movies then a call comes and we are answering in the same time if we switches to mx player or any app the sound will increase respectively ..
these are the noticed issues .
device has a great hardware quality compared to redmi devices but lack of software optimizations .

Not only so, the 6GB M1 has both cameras upgraded, 16MP front and 16MP back.

I have 6gb and I used gcam and it was flawless, also 5000 mAh battery is clearly better than 4000 + ads built in system are well....

Agree 6GB version is better. But I found that the gcams I've tried can't take photo if HDR is disabled, and the problem gone when HDR or HDR+ is enabled...
I'm using stock rom, did you have this problem? Can you recommend a gcam with front and back cameras working and night sight working, and can take photo without HDR and HDR+?
Thanks

Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus - 6GB RAM, Triple Cameras

Hello! Xiaomi Mi5s Plus was launched recently and here are the features: 5.7-inch FHD Screen, Snapdragon 821 CPU, 6GB RAM, and Triple cameras with two rear cameras (source: http://www.chinaphonereview.com/xiaomi-mi5s-plus).
The dual rear cameras is a unique characteristic in which it features a 13MP colored camera and a 13MP black & white camera. I'm not sure how this would translate. But I'm certain the 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 821 processor would definitely provide an excellent performance.
Any thoughts on this smartphone?
If a decent developer community forms and this gets the ability to work on Verizon then I'm sold. But I have to hold out hopes that the Mi5 progress keeps advancing and can easily translate to this device.

Be careful, the mi5s plus cameras are old sony imx258 and not the new imx378 on the mi5s. Also the mi5s plus lacks of ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Yah, they gimped the plus so much.. if you like larger phones, neither are good buys. If the plus had 2 x imx378 and ultrasonic, best phone in the world easily, by hardware.
The pixel phones use the imx378, I believe, and the pixel is rated best camera phone by DxO (take with grain of salt as they're apparently biased), but it still shows the prowess of the imx378.
Would the dual rear cameras make any difference in terms of picture quality? How can the additional black & white camera help?
Just got this phone today.
It is amazing fast, super high performance.
With default setup, it can have 4G RAM free
However, it only have chinese stock rom at this moment.

Well, sadly enough that the imx378's sensor is large and I assumed that is why the dual camera setup with that sensor is not achievable.
Same goes to OIS, most probably due to sensor size issues. (Pixel phones have no OIS thou)

From what I've read, but I'm not an expert, the B&W camera should be capable of capturing more light.
So combining images from both cameras it should capture better pictures on low light conditions.

I have it and for me there's 2 things that I don't like. MIUI 8 , I'm a stock Android guy I hope somebody bring cm or something like this to this mobile and the other thing it's the camera, it's a camera for me from the beginning of 2015, that perform well in optimal light conditions and in low light even with the stereo option it's not very well.
Conclusion, I'm not a photo guy so there's no problem but I can't support miui even that it runs fast in this mobile. So until we have some development to this mobile I'm going to stay whit my axon 7.

Planning to switch from N5X to Mi A1, good choice?

I'm planning to buy Mi A1 in February. Since A1 is Snapdragon powered device in theory it's capable of SD goodies. It has slightly higher octa-core CPU(5X has hexa-core) and GPU clock speed, expandable storage and also have 4 GB of RAM unlike 5X that has 2 GB. I think it will be highly noticable in multitasking. Is there a huge deference (if any) between disabled and forced enabled Camera2API in photos? I'm worried because of it. Enabling Camera2API allows us to use Google camera from what I've heard.
Can someone post photos in different environments to let me compare them with my 5X, that would be grateful.
Hope Xiaomi release source code for this device before February, custom ROMs are "kill features for me".
If it's a bad choice tell me why.
not a major upgrade since 5x still has a support by google, camera is better, community is better since it's google,
Mi A1 released months ago but there is no source, You can't tell if this phone is interested from developers. The safe bet is to wait for a couple more weeks, maybe a month but this is just my opinion. You still can't go wrong to buy this phone. On 11.11 aliexpress will sell this phone for $184 + free shipping. this is insane price.
There's no noticeable difference in 6 or 8 cores, but difference between 2 and 4 GB of RAM is pretty huge.
I made 2 photos, one with stock Camera app(using HDR) and Google Camera app(using HDR+), I tried to make 2 exact same photos. First one is using Google Camera, second one is using stock Camera app: https://photos.app.goo.gl/VVaKFtKlq2ZNOtbz2
Also, kernel sources will be definitely released to public, question is when.
Compare with N5x, camera mia1 damn suck :v

Thanks but can you take photos other than your leg lol. Does ZSL work? As in HDR+ works without loading spinner. I would super appreciate it if you can show us some night shots with HDR+
I've just migrated from N5X to A1 and so far I'm impressed. I was afraid of slightly bigger screen, but got used to it after few hours and now 5.2" feels "small" For me the main differences:
1. 4GB RAM, multitasking is working as expected, no more unfinished HDR photos, no more launcher crashes, ..
2. CPU is much more responsive, doesn't overheat and throttle. I wasn't able to keep up big cores of N5X on long enough, they were shut down very often to keep the temeperature down.
3. A1 is faster overal, app installations took half the time of N5X
4. Stock A1 photos in low light are not very impressive. However simple mod brings gcam (so far I like the simplest version the most) with its HDR+ which does pretty much the same job as on N5X with faster processing.
5. I am not interested in custom ROMs, but A1 is limited at this for the time being
6. A1 has shameful headphones hissing noise, especially with sensitive low impedance headphones. To be fair, N5X has similar issue, however solved easily with custom kernel and lowering the headphone gain. Once Xiaomi releases kernel sources, I expect this issue to be solved in the same way too.
7. Build quality is better on A1, however it is bigger and heavier phone. Better feeling, but a bit less pocket friendly..
8. ZSL HDR works, but with same mixed results as on N5X - bunch of my test photos were blurred. Never had this issue with forced HDR mode, so I'm using it exclusively. Spinner doesn't bother me, at least I know I should keep phone steady
9. A/B partitioning is super nice for seamless updates, but I experienced some issues with Magisk. After failed installation of some modules, Magisk image probably got corrupted and I had to remove it completely and install it again without such modules. Took a bit of trial and error, but I have fully systemless rooted and modded (build.prop tweaks) phone now.
10. Oreo vs Nougat - I miss only really fast boot times and easy use of substratum. Otherwise no big loss in my eyes.
11. attached crops of test comparison photos (Stock HDR enhanced N5X vs. Gcam HDR enhanced A1). Please note that I was able to achieve sharper results with A1, but this is the only photo which I have taken with N5X as well. And there are no legs

I was in the work, so that was the most I could do at that moment xD But you can see pretty big difference between them.
I will make 2 more photos when it's evening here and will post it.
I switched to A1 from op3. Obviously it was a forced switch as there was multiple failure in op3.
Both the phones have their own upper hands and the most I miss from op3 is the super amoled screen. Low light camera in op3 was better but then A1 has portrait mode. Looks wise A1 is not less than op3. As of now, the phone doesn't feel slower to me in daily use as compared to op3.

This makes me feel good about buying A1
Can't wait to get Gcam, waiting for Oreo first before rooting.
Sent from my Mi A1 using Tapatalk
I switched, and the phone is better daily driver. No lags or overheating, no more app closing because of memory running out. Does not have nfc but used only once on my Nexus. Mi remote is a cool feature though. Portrait shots are really good in daylight, and modded Google camera works great. What I don't like is that the phone should have launched with Oreo out of the box, or it should have got Oreo by now. There are no cool features like night light and life to check gestures, no double tap to check notification (this feature is present in redmi note 4, which has similar hardware). Android one seems more like a marketing strategy now.
Coming from a Nexus 5X, Mi A1 really is an upgrade. It's like having a more premium phone than Pixel devices since the device feels like an iPhone but with stock android. 4GB ram and SD625-14nm.

i use it on the latest xiaomi eu dev. also portrait mode only works with the rear camera, not the front. the front camera is just upside down with no blurr effect and low quality. but maybe its because i have the mi5 api fix installed that fixed the upside down front camera after you installed api2. dont know
what works now with miui android 7 is:
config camera HDR+:
Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 Auto, Nexus 6P, Pixel 2016 Tuning (doesnt crash but has problems saving pictures), Pixel 2017 Zsl Hdr PD (doesnt crash but black screen, no connection to photo camere, video works)
everything else crashes.
Model:
Pixel XL(corr), Pixel 2XL, Pixel 2, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X = basically all work fine.

** Please mention me in the thread of your device with a logcat or screenshots.
It works perfectly on Mi MAX 2.
HDR+: Nexus 6p.
Rom: xiaomi.eu 9.2 STABLE
Thank you @Arnova8G2
Using Google camera mod v. 5.1.018.177470874 with xiaomi.eu stable 9.2 and everything works well except slowmo(didn't modify mediaprofiles because that crashes slowmo in miui default camera). Just modified build.prop for camera2api support and the angle of front camera for the upsidedown problem. I use Nexux 6p configs.
Works perfectly for me MIUI 9.2 stable .eu ROM, Nexus 6p configs.
have anyone managed to take astrophotography using mi5? mine isn't working. I have tried many gcam 7.1/7.2 ports, none worked. It shows astrophotography on while mounted to tripod but only takes 8/9 seconds to take picture instead of 4 minutes long exposure. I'm using PE10 rom.

Why Google mod camera is not working on Xiaomi mi note 2?

Gcam mod is not working on Xiaomi mi note 2 why i don't know why?
I have camera2api enabled and my mi note 2 is rooted. i almost try all Gcam mod apps but no success yeah 3.xx version is working but is not good as 5.xx versions.
Please if any one of you have working Gcam mod so please share the all procedure and links.

Bro but in link version of gcam is not good.
I used this one https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/MGC_3.2.045_final_2.2.apk, buth this one https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/MGC_3.2.045_FINAL_3.3.apk works too. HDR+ works for front and rear camera, however Lens Blur still buggy

I can tell you this for sure, i spent last 2 days trying to get a fully functional Gcam to work on my Note 2 and there is no way to do it. Must have tried 3 dozens different Gcams....and a dozen different hacks on how to get them to work. Some work with no HDR some work only back cam some with no Video Camera etc etc.
I'm running Pixel Experience (8.1) Rom that comes with a basic Gcam with no HDR that is the closest to a working cam. I decided to opt for Open Camera that is free fully functional (HDR, DRO and more) video rec works, front and back work and it supports Cam2Api for extra functions. I'd like to get a fully functional Gcam but as far as i know is not possible...yet at least.
The question *WHY* is a very good starting point.
There are almost no phones sharing the quirky SONY imx318 sensor. Just a handful, rather unpopular phones. Which means no development on the gcam, etc.
However, knowing that the Note 2 has a SD821 SoC and a SONY IMX sensor, porting *should* be possible.
(Google Pixel is running an SD821 and a (far superior) SONY IMX sensor)
I forgot to mention that I have Pixel Experience installed and have removed the preinstalled camera first with help of system app uninstaller , before installing the camera. HDR+ works so far.

Thanks . :good: I tried doing this way and it works perfectly....tho i don't really see this major difference in quality but will test better tomorrow with sunlight.

Is it worth ??

Hey Everyone,
I am planing to buy ASUS ZenFone Max PRO M1 3GB/32GB
the thing is the camera improved after updates?
and the phone support any kind of AI?
for front or rear camera?
and is the audio quality via headphone jack good enough??
and i saw in a tech reviewers video that its gonna get EIS(Electronic Image Stabilization)
so is it true?
& is there any awesome rom that is perfectly working with the phone
and does any rom supports EIS
I will use the phone for PUBG,YOUTUBE,CALLING,CAMERA,XDA ROMs,MUSIC(around 2gb files) Flashing ROMs and nothing else just these apps so is the
3/32 GB enough??
and also suggest me links to buy
TAMPERED GLASS
Battery is great 10h sot easily with 2 days usage calling video calling and browsing chating . Phone is smooth and fast. Does not heat. Camera is not upto mark. Good in light and night its really bad.
Redmi note 5 pro/ai is way better
I play RULES OF SURVIVAL, and it plays flawlessly on my M1(3gb). Camera is 6/10. For YouTube, music, calling etc its best 10/10 , as screen and speaker is too damn good for the price.
Fantastic phone under 11K
5000mAh battery + SD 636 + 18:9 beautiful screen + Pure Stock Android experience + triple slots + dual 4g, What else Do you need?
Also asus is providing regular updates to improve it's camera. But I can't find them helpful.
Also, this device is based on stock Android so the Multitouch bug is there. Which is really annoying.
But If you have 15K to spend and if you love selfies and MIUI, Redmi Note 5 Pro is best option for you.
But for 11K this device is awesome ( I hate those bugs and camera app but I love this device?)
