Stuck in Boot Loop - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Have searched the forum but came up empty.
Hoping someone can help.
Purchased the phone used back in December and have been using it as-is. Two OTA updates came through fine. The latest OTA update has it stuck in a boot loop.
- I can get to fastboot with power and volume down buttons but all of the options either turn it off or stick it back in the loop again (Essential logo with powered by Android, NO dot animation)
- Can't see it via "adb devices" since developer mode was likely not enabled
- "fastboot devices" can see the phone but can't change slots or do anything else
I saw two other people who've posted something similar but no solution. Is my phone garbage?
Any help is appreciated.

Damn, that's a bit unlucky, this March update said it would make recovery from a loop after OTA update easier to recover from, which might just have helped you. Sorry not sure how to help fix at present.

you can try flashing one of these https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/stock-7-1-1-nmj20d-t3701681
be sure to pick one with the fastboot images

A couple of questions:
- Is your BL unlocked (or is OEM Unlocking enabled)?
What happens if you try executing "fastboot flashing unlock"? NOTE: this would WIPE your data if successful.
- Can you get to the Recovery mode? It's when you pick "Recovery" option from fastboot mode, see the lying android with an exclamation sign, then hold Power and press VolumeUp to get to the Recovery menu.

Thanks for your response.
- I dont belive OEM unlocking is enabled.
- I can get to the fastboot menu, but the recovery mode option just takes me back to the 'powered by android' logo, not the green dead robot.
- When I try fastboot flashing unlock, I get the below error:
=============
FAILED (remote: Flashing Unlock is not allowed
)
finished. total time: 0.013s

Will this work even though I cannot see the device via adb? AND the device state is "locked".

Dang... :\ Yeah, the last error means you don't have OEM unlock enabled. So, you can't flash the bts image via fastboot. One last thing I could think of is trying to get to recovery by the button combo. Although, if you are correct in saying you don't have USB debug enabled, it won't do much good, i.e. you won't be able to flash an OTA... :\
While device is OFF, press and hold Volume-Up button while pushing Power button to boot.
Your device will now be in Recovery mode. An Android logo with red exclamation mark should appear on screen. Hold the Power button, then press the Volume-Up button one time to see the recovery menu.

can you try this command on bootloader:
fastboot OEM unlock

[Solved] Hard Reset

I forgot my pin on my GT-P7510 and even though there are only three buttons I am able to press I cannot seem to get to a menu with a clear data or reset option. Does anyone know how I may do this?
Edit: I was able to get to the menu on my GF's TAB using `adb reboot recovery`, unfortunately I don't have USB debugging enabled on my device :-/
And just FYI this is what I've discovered:
Holding volume up when powered on brings up a menu with a flashing rectangle over an Android with a shovel and the text "Downloading..." below it, or the USB logo.Using the volume up key will toggle between the two.
Selecting the Android by pressing the voume down key will bring up a "ODIN3 Download Mode (Protocol v2) menu that says the OEM:Lock is unlocked and waiting for a USB cable.
Selecting the USB logo brings up text saying Fastboot USB download protocol.
Holding volume up from the Samsung Galaxy Tab boot screen until boot will bring the device up in safe mode. (Edit: Actually volume up need only be pressed just before the animation is over when it says "Samsung").
Holding volume down after the initial boot logo appears to have no effect.
Holding both after the inital boot logo appears to have no effect.
Update: Solved! I had to manually build the fastboot application on my ubuntu machine in order for the device to appear when running `fastboot devices`. After that it simply required running `fastboot -w`.
Update
I called Samsung support this morning and they informed me that they will not support the device until it launches which is quite lame. I've basically given up trying to find the correct 3-button combo to bring up the restore screen and focused more on the fastboot and Odin3.
I've attempted to get my device recognized when using the `fastboot devices` command so that I can simply perform `fastboot -w` to reset everything however neither on my Linux box nor Windows box will the device appear.
Does anyone have any idea which drivers may work with the fastboot on this device? I've tried the google drivers included in the latest SDK.
I would really appreciate help with this, and would be happy to help out this community as much as I can once I am able to use my device.
Thanks!

Wow, that's kinda weird that they would say that. At the conference they were helping everyone with the devices.
I'm pretty sure that the only way to get into recovery is through adb. It's quite unfortunate.

I'm fairly certain I should be able to use either the fastboot or Odin3 interface to reset the device. Anyone have experience with either on this device? Thus far I haven't been able to have the device appear on the fastboot listing.
Odin 3
Anyone have link to odin 3?
Why hasn't fastboot been posted yet?
Having a working fastboot really frustrated me.
Yesterday when I woke up, my Galaxy Tab 10.1 was turned off, and when I powered it on, it would go into an infinite loop with the boot animation. fastboot -w fixed this for me
I'm sad nobody posted their fastboot binary that actually works...so here it is! Compiled this on x86_64 Ubuntu 11.04, but it's a 32-bit binary linked against /lib32 stuff, so if you're on Ubuntu 11.04, make sure you have ia32-libs installed.
I'm having the boot loop problem, but I can ONLY get into "upload mode"
I cannot get into the USB Mode, or the Android OS reset mode that I've read accompanies the Power + Volume down button and Power + Volume up button.
So, from merely "upload mode" what can I do?

My N7 ran out of power and now loops the Google Screen over and over...

My N7 ran out of power and shut off. I immediately put it on the charger and it turned on for a minute (without me turning it on) and then powered off again. After that it booted to the White "Google" screen and continues to reboot into this screen.
I can get into fastboot (holding power and the volume down) where I have options to Power off, restart bootloader, recovery mode (which shows me the red triangle and says "no command"), or start.
I am not rooted and the bootloader is still locked.
I'm good at following directions and have tried what I thought were solutions but nothing seems to be working... or perhaps I am just retarded (no offense to people who are actually retarded) I think I have installed the correct drivers but I still can't get the cmd prompt screen to show my device when I type adb devices
How do I fix this? I don't want to send it back and deal with that hassle!
Thanks in advance and I apologize up front for what is probably a simple fix but I couldn't find any other posts with a solution that has worked for me.

In boot loader you use fast boot commands. Type "fastboot devices". If listed type "fastboot reboot". If its still stuck in loop try and taking back cover off and disconnecting battery for a few seconds, reassemble and power on.

Thanks. The battery pull didn't work however your tip on typing fastboot instead of adb worked and it recognized my device. Consequently I was able to flash the stock image and start over with setup and etc.. which sucks but it's better than sending it back in and all that mess.
Thanks!

[Q] Nexus 7 stuck

Hi,
my Nexus 7 (2013) is stuck on Google screen...
a few days ago I downloaded a lot of movies via utorrent, and utorrent kept crashing. So i forced stop, removed the app, reinstalled it from google play and continued.
My nexys then suddenly freezed for about 1-2mins before i shut it down via the power buttom, and since then it wont start...I've tried almost everything.
The device is stuck on Google screen. I've tried to boot it through the bootloader, recovery mode etc, but it's still stuck on the google screen. downloaded the nexus root toolkit to unlock my device, but it keeps tellin me i've to enable USB debugging. which I can't since my device won't start.
I've downloaded the SkipSoft Android tookit, but not too familiar with the tookit so haven't really tried anything yet (also not sure which android version i'm running)..
Is there ANYTHING i can do?
EDIT: tried using skipsoft android tookit to unlock bootloader, but when coming to the stage where i've to chose yes or no, the device get stuck and the power button does not respond => I can't chose Yes..
EDIT: So I've tried a few things but nothing seems to work..
downloaded a new adb+fastboot directory from another thread. Fastboot commands seems to work, but when i try and erase boot/cache etc the cmd does nothing...had this line for about 10min:
erasing 'boot'..
nothing happens.. when i unplug my device an error message shows (too many links).
so, fastboot won't erase my boot nor my cache, so i tried to fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img, and it says my bootloader is locked.
fastboot oem lock --> bootloader is alrdy locked
fastboot oem unlock --> stuck at "YES", just as i was when trying with different toolkits.
fastboot -w update image-razor --> Error, failed to load 'img-razor'
soo i'm getting kinda desperate here...
remeber, this was all from a stock rom, no root, no custom rom, just from a freeze when dl movies from utorrent...
i have been stuck like that before. get into to the bootloader screen from where its hung at the google splash screen. once there you can fastboot a factory image.
from the google screen:
1. hold volume up, volume down and power until you get to the screen with the android and its belly open
2. connect to pc
3. download factory image from HERE
4. unzip the tar file you just downloaded and place the contents in your platform-tools folder
5. double click the file named flash-all.bat
6. wait for it to finish and it should boot up just fine.

say what? Hold vol.up, vol.down and power until i get to bootloader?
when i press vol up, vold down, and power, holding them all in together from the google screen the device shuts down..
Do you have a youtube tutorial gudie or something?
EDIT:
Also, I've never rooted or done anythign with this tablet except downloading a few apps etc...this crash happened when downloading from utorrent...

Yeah, and from what i can read it also needs an unlocked bootloader, which i don't have..
just keep holding the keys down. it will shut down. keep holding it will try to boot back up and take you to the bootloader screen. you do not need an unlocked boot loader. all my nexus devices have locked bootloaders, are rooted and run custom roms.

also, should add that i tried to unlock oem via the cmd, tried to flash boot.img but nothing..
when typing fastboot oem unlock, it got stuck at "Yes" when trying to unlock bootloader, and when typing flash boot, it said error, cannot flash boot.img..

Yes, I can access bootloader (fastboot mode).
tho i don't know which version i'm running..
it's either 4.4.2 (KOT49H) or 4.4 (KRT16S).
however, when running flash-all it says "fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRfrjR9Y8fI&feature=youtu.be
dont worry about version. it does not matter. lets focus on your connection to the device. do you have ADB setup on your pc? if you dont, go to THIS thread and get minimal ADB & fatboot from shimp208. install it and run it.

Help, I know it's been asked, can't find the answer, can't boot past the LG logo

Please help, I went to update my magisk to 11.6 as it said, everything else is fine. It's rooted has NATFs ROM on it, 3.2 and everything else was otherwise fine. Then, it rebooted to install the Magisk update and here I am stuck with a phone that won't boot past the LG Life's Good screen. The screen dims slightly after the LG logo is displayed and then nothing. Absolutely nothing at all. I can't boot into recovery or bootloader, and the device isn't recognized even though my computer makes a noise as though it's connected when I plug it in to the computer's USB port.
Please help, I'm really stuck here.

Then unbrick the phone by going fastboot mode
Type "fastboot oem lock (or locker)"
*Then shut off the phone.
*Then do a factory reset by the same combination you do when going to recovery.
*after that try going fastboot again and unlock the oem
*with "fastboot oem unlock(or "unlocker" don't remember
Then you should be able to go to recovery.
BE AWARE : your phone my be wiped so make sure you backup.

I'm a moron. Can I ask for really stupid steps here because I'm kind of nervous about making this worse.
1. I was able to oem lock and unlock, however I still can't get past the LG screen. I can get to fastboot, nothing more
2. I'm sure everything is wiped, I'll worry about later, I just want to be able to get to recovery and nothing is registering at all
3. ADB reboot recovery isn't working at all I get error: device '(null)' not found
Currently, I'm sitting with the device plugged into my computer on fastboot mode displayed on the screen with the command "use fastboot reboot" if the fastboot is available.
fastboot devices shows the following:
LGH918ad448f8 fastboot
Is there a way to get to recovery from fastboot?
ugh, this is so frustrating. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

After you do that button combinations it's going to ask you if you want to wipe or factory reset etc, you choose YES twice!. If you flashed recovery before then it'll take you over there after the choosing yes (it's not really gonna do anything just suppose to take you to recovery)
Edit: Okay let me be clear. When you lock the oem you should do the buttons combination. If you do them successfully then it should take you to a white screen. Asking you about confirmation twice. Then it will wipe and factory reset.
Now when you already have oem unlocked, you do the same procedure and which will take you to white screen then you choose YES twice then it'll take you to recovery (if you have successfully flashed it before)

So don't even lock the oem, try doing the combination properly now

i did choose yes twice, but when exactly did I flash recovery at this point? You write "IF you flashed recovery" I had recovery on here already but can't get to it

The proper command is;
Fasboot flash recovery image.img
And make sure the twrp file is stored locally from where you started the command prompt.
If it worked and flashed then try: Fasboot reboot recovery
To go to recovery.
I was able to run the following command from fastboot (looked it up):
fastboot flash recovery image.img
I see the following error message:
target reported max download size of 5368...

Pressing the power and volume up button and releasing for a second and reholding what do I release and rehold? I am trying to hold the volume up while releasing and reholding the power but I just get the same LG screen and no recovery
Ugh, i"m so sorry for asking for so much help.

I'm sitting here doing nothing waiting for all the apps to reinstall. What a waste of a day. I didn't reinstall Magick, never really used it. Not sure what happened, but at least it wasn't fatal.

Yea, happens. Just to be sure. Make sure you keep twrp and supersu stored on SD just in case. And always backup [emoji14]
Thank you

I do a daily backup at about 3am to my SD card. Thought about restoring from it, but then realized this is an opportunity to start all over which is something I was leery to do because I didn't want to set the phone up again. Yet, I'm doing it now to see what was causing the awful battery drain.

Locked Bootloader with TWRP, is there anything I can do?

So, first off... I know this is a BIG no no... wasn't thinking, it was late at night, and I was having some issues getting LG Bridge to recognize my device... made a stupid mistake. Point is... I'm now stuck in a bootloop with the message "Your device is corrupt. It cannot be trusted and will not boot."
Doesn't seem like I can boot into recovery, however I have noted that the default Factory Reset shortcut still lets me through: PWR + Vol Down, but the menus appear to do nothing helpful. I know I'm about as hard-bricked as one can get, but if anyone has a solution... help an idiot out.

No worries, you're safe i literally did the same thing yesterday and almost had a heart attack, unplug the phone (if it's plugged), and i'm asuming you've already got Fastboot installed.
Hold the Vol+ Button while plugging in the cable, that should send you into the bootloader, on your computer, open up a cmd where fastboot is, and type in "fastboot.exe oem unlock" (If you have windows that is)
Then do "fastboot.exe reboot" and that should be fixed.
