Replace Google App (to left of home screen) with SmartNews? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Question is in the subject.
I'm running a custom ROM (Syberia). I'm glad I can turn off the Google App, which by default shows up to the left of the home screen, activated by a swipe.
I'd like to replace in this space the third-party SmartNews, which I prefer to the info I can get from Google App..
Does anybody know how to make this happen?
I'm also running Magisk, so if there's a Magisk module that does this, I'd like to know.
Thanks.

I think there was a way to do this with root but as I'm on stock I just use Nova Launcher so I could add a widget to left screen & set home screen to right or center screen

Try a master reset
Solved, have no idea how. Installed nova launcher, didn't liked, uninstall the app and the icon disappeared.
Looks just like your launcher experienced some weird error and resulted in a graphical artifact. Not common but also not entirely rare. It typically corrects itself if you just force close and start the launcher again. Or just reboot.
Since you uninstalled the launcher altogether, that works too.

Got OTA last night. How do I remove home screens

I have 5 and need only tow.
Or should I go back to Go Launcher ?
Also, can I remove google search box at top of the home screen ?

Either remove stuff from the extra home screens (press, hold and drag them to red x) or move them to the two screens you want to use. Once a home screen is empty it'll go away on its own. The Google search box cannot be removed with the stock launcher, you can try other launchers. Nova used to get rid of it in kitkat, IDK whether it works with lollipop.

Nova has always been updated for L, they even have a beta program and beta builds, their latest version has been public and for use on the Playstore. as for Apex they usually are a bit delayed on the scene.

Just download Google Launcher or it will automatically update itself. The stock launcher has this habit of doing so when it tries to detect how many homescreens you had on the cloud and reserves it for the apps after it's done downloading.

How to remove the google search bar from the home screen?

Thanks in advance.

I got my phone but haven't set it up yet. Are you using Nova right now with the 6p? Have they optimized it for Android 6.0?

Furthermore, I love the new "normalise icon" feature. It works beautifully.
+1 for Nova. If you got the $50 credit, get Nova Prime (paid), although test out the free one first to see if you like it.
I like Action Launcher 3 better than Nova but the latter is as good as it gets if you want to set up the phone old school. Realistically everyone should have a second launcher installed off the market just to get the backup for a corrupt stock launcher. You don't have to use it but if the stock launcher is hosed Android will start the phone up with the second which will allow you to get through your day and deal with the fix later.
Perhaps someone else will flesh this out for you but the reason people are saying install another launcher may be because you didn't used to be able to rid yourself of the search bar without root on Nexus devices. Not sure if this has changed since I only screwed around with it when it first came out for about the 5 minutes it took to figure out I hated it and haven't looked back since. Maybe that has changed though...
the gesture capabilities are nice on Nova too. i do a double tap to launch the Play Store for App updates.

You should download the screen off app and bind the double tap to turn off the screen. That for off and the fingerprint for on, you'll never have to touch the power button (but double tapping the power button for quick camera is still pretty awesome, so you probably will - lol).
any non root/rom ways to get screen to turn on with double tap or something by touching the screen?

You can use nova/screen on to turn it off and it doesn't require root. To turn on, you can use the fingerprint sensor.

Screen Off and Lock Apps break Nexus Imprint

The only thing I do not like about Nova is that it does not play nice with Google Now. Or at least that is the case on my tablet.

Have you ever had the launcher go bad? I never had that happen.
Nova launcher is reporting bug with pulling down notification shade and says Google is aware. This is marshmallow only.

Twice. Once when switching themes and once with an app conflict that hosed ADW. I normally have multiple launchers installed as I like to switch things up but it also comes in handy when the chips are down.

OK, so third party launchers? I always keep stock launcher active. I'm going to give the stock launcher a decent chance but that bar might drive me to Nova or action.

That doesn't make any sense. I've been using it for a few days and I've had no problems with Imprint at all.
Update: I take that back. So, I just played with it a little bit and you're right. If I power off via the button, imprint allows me to power on and unlock immediately. If I double-tap to power off, when I touch the sensor, it still asks for the pin code.
I personally like the Google Now launcher. I don't see what's wrong with the search bar at the top, personally. I'm not a fan of the newest skin they put on it, though. The launcher, as a whole, though us functional and minimal, which is what I prefer. Having google now with a swipe to the right is a bonus.

How do I get rid of this persistent google search bar on the app switcher?

(Unrooted)
Hi,
I have recently installed iLauncher which has removed the Google search bar widget from the top of the home screen. I am also aware that other launchers like nova can do this.
However, I am still unable to figure out how to remove the same google search bar that appears when I enter the app switcher (recent apps). This app switcher being what appears when you press the right hand side square button at the bottom of the screen on the home screen, where you can close the apps you have running.
I have no clue how to remove the search bar from here and it is very annoying, as it is on the switcher but not on my home screen and I do not want it on either.
I have included screenshots of my home screen and the switcher so you see what I mean.
Thanks.

It depends on the custom ROM you're running, most custom ROM's have their own settings menu to configure options that are usually not found in AOSP. You have to search there and see if there's a menu for recent apps and the option to show or hide search on recent apps should be there.
Xposed and GravityBox is always an option

I am not running a custom ROM though, just stock marshmallow with a different launcher installed.
Is there really no way to remove the search bar from recent apps?
You can do either of the above or request the launcher dev to include it. That's 3 options, just for you.
Nova Launcher allows this to be removed

Help! Briefing Covers Home (AT&T S7 Edge)

I recently rooted my phone using Is in and had my own set of issues with that but am now unrooted to the best of my knowledge. However I am still running custom Rom from the root. Everything seems to work perfectly except for Samsung Pay which I tried to fix by flashing all new stock rom through Odin to no avail, but that isn't my problem. I noticed when moving apps around on my screen that the whole screen woukd go blank and I'd just be holding the app guessing where to put it. When trying to edit widgets there was no home screen, except for briefing, which hadn't been working. After turning briefing on and creating a new home page simply because I didn't want to deal with it and couldn't find help, I couldn't place any widgets due to the fact that they are on this phantom briefing home page already. When changing the grid for apps within the page settings, I can see the apps on the "briefing" page but that is the only way that I can see it all. If possible I'd like to wipe the widgets or something of the sort if there is no way to fix my pages. Please help me if you have any advice. I just want my phone working again.
I have imgur links for the screenshots but can't post them because this is my first post.
Are you using a custom launcher? If so, which one is it.
Resolved, sort of.

I am using the stock launcher, I have since fixed the issue through a factory reset and restore of apps. My advice to all S7 Edge rooters until the bug is truly fixed: after you get your phone rooted or unrooted, running custom rom, if you see that briefing is missing, create a new home page and move all of your apps one page to the right. Leave the original homepage, now on the left, blank and designate the one with apps as your main page by clicking the home icon. With the two home pages set up, go apply a theme. This should force the phone to locate all of the apps and "think" about them. For me this automatically placed briefing over the blank home page that is to the left. I hope that this helps anyone experiencing the same issue. Thank you for the reply and I'm glad to be a part of XDA
