So I can't get my desktop OR laptop running XP Pro 32 to even recognize the phone. As in no audio plays and nothing appears in the system tray. Tried with/without debugging mode, installed the samsung drivers etc. The phone doesn't even show up in device manager at all- not even as something unrecognizable. Its as if the port is dead. The phone does 'ding' though and charge ok so it is receiving power... though nothing at all appears in the android notification tab when connected. Any ideas or anyone know of any apps on the pc or android side to take a closer look at whats happening on the bus?
The only way that I can get it to work is to put it in media mode. It shows up as a media device in Win7. If I put it on, "ask every time" or whatever it doesn't work and in mass storage mode it shows up as two unreadable drives, they are grayed out in Explorer... Basically...don't use the "ask every time" for USB function.
This function seems like such a simple thing, not sure why Samsung has so many issues with it considering they have been making media devices for a long time.
Anyway... do you have access to a newer OS to at least rule that out as a cause. Not saying it shouldn't work with XP 32 but just something to check out.
I was having similar issues at first. I take it adb doesn't work either? Well my fix was to delete my whole Android SDK folder, then I redownloaded it (though I just kept the "tools" folder this time). Then I downloaded "USBDeview" (google it) to delete every USB driver that had to do with android (basically just left the printers, HID, and my Sansa drivers), restarted, then I downloaded the samsung drivers from the thread on here, plugged my phone in and manually pointed the driver search to the drivers.
ADB and Mass Storage has been working fine since. All I can tell you is to keep checking cause there's something you're missing, I also thought to myself "what the heck else can I do?" since I had done each one of those steps previously, but maybe I just had to do them all together. Good luck.
another possible solution is to change cables if you're not using the samsung provided cable - some cables are charger only (no data) - some of the motorola cables are charger only and we've already had one poster that had that issue
I couldn't get it to work at first either. I more or less did this.
I plugged in my phone. I did not enable mass storage mode on my phone. Walked away and let my PC think for a while. I came back and I noticed I had two new drives. I then enabled mass storage mode and could connect.
Two of my machines I had to do this. I'm not sure why it wasn't instant, but it just took a bit of patience and walking away from the machine to let it think for a while before I guess it installed the drivers and made its peace with the fact it wasn't the G1 any more.
Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". That works if port on PC is OK.
If it's a driver issue, open device manager and uninstall the usb ports. Unplug everything from usb and when you reboot the computer it will automatically reinstall the usb ports.

I ran into the same issue. It was a problem with the USB cable I was using. As soon as I tried a different cable it worked fine.

I second this, I forgot my sammy cable at work on Friday and on way home stopped at T-Mo and picked up a charger w/cable and realized right away this was just a charging cable as soon as I connected it to my PC. I'm returning the cable back to T-Mo tonight. At least I was able to charge my phone over the weekend.
UPDATE: You guys are right, it is the goddamn cables! I bought an extra wall charger + cable at the t-mobile store and was using that at home. I had left the original in-box cable at work. Tried the cable at work today and now the drives pop up. Still don't appear writeable but I can look into that when I have time, probably the typical driver issue. As far as I can tell those separate cables are power only! $15 for a two wires + dc adapter. Thanks Samsung. Grr.
i suspect the mfgrs have gone to charge only cables to help keep folks from tethering - just a suspicion
if the "drives" are popping up, have you "mounted" the phone (pull down notification bar, clik on USB connected and it should give you a window asking to mount the cards or drive)
FYI....The Rocketfish cables you get from Best Buy do not work. They are only capable of charging.
@larryccf...I don't think certain manufacturers are implementing this on purpose so we can't tether. I think their just being cheap.
Where I got my cables on the cheap! and my problem.
I got my cable at monoprice.com. Check it out that is a 10 foot usb cable for $1.69 and it works for me. They have different lengths and even some colors. Now my Mass Storage issue . . .
My Mass Storage via USB works fine unless I enable "USB Debugging" which one of my apps needs to work. Once debugging is enabled I loss the ability to see my sd card and internal storage on my XP netbook. any ideas????

Yes phone is mounted, and can be seen w/o usb debugging enabled. However with usb/debugging on it does not read the phone being connected. Meaning that I cannot connect to ADB which is my main concern.

This is my issue exactly, and I haven't found a fix either. Called T-Mobile and they thought turning off debugging was the only fix I needed.
Most of them, sorry to say are half retarded. They think a data reset is the cure-all

If you are running windows (x86 or x64), it would be wise to install the samsung drivers. I was having this exact problem, but as soon as I installed the drivers from samsung, viola!
I had the latest drivers from google, and they did not work for me.

Argh, I am pulling my hair out trying to solve this! When I connect my phone through USB to my computer my phone detects the connection but my computer doesn't respond at all! I bought the phone used and it is already rooted but is using a pretty old rom and I wanted to upgrade it. It is currently running "Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #4".
Things I have tried:
Using different USB settings on the phone (Kies, mass storage, ask on connection)
USB debugging mode
Different USB cables
Different computers
Cleaning the micro usb port on the phone
Formatting SD card
wide data/factory reset
Nothing seems to accomplish anything, it still reacts in the same way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First of all, has it ever worked? I just presume you're running on win7: did you installed the drivers as specified in several different tutorials on this forum?
What kind of connection are you trying to establish? tether, usb, kies, other? have you tried any combination possible?
I just got the phone a couple days ago, I have not managed to get it to be detected by anything yet. I have tried it on a couple Win 7 boxes and also a Vista laptop. I am currently downloading Ubuntu just to rule out the OS factor. I have just been using Kies to install drivers although after reading your post I found this thread:

I have been trying to establish basically any connection at all for the ultimate goal of getting Odin to actually detect the phone so I can flash it with ClockworkMod Recovery and then an ICS rom. The phone detects the USB cable fine and starts charging and puts the phone into whatever mode I want (kies, mass storage, etc.) but the computer has yet to give any indication that anything is connected to it.
Try with the drivers, but be also sure to enable usb debugging to be able to select a different usb sharing when inserting the cable in case you haven't already.
The drivers installation didn't make any difference and I've tried USB debugging and all 3 connection modes (Kies, mass storage and media player), none of which exhibit any response from the PC.
Edit: Posting from Ubuntu now, same exact thing. Phone detects USB connection, and it doesn't matter which of the connection options I choose as the PC doesn't give any indication that anything has been connected to it.
That's really weird. Does Odin3 (which presumably works at a lower level) sees anything if you put the phone in download mode? ) this way you should be probably able to upgrade somehow.

No unfortunately there is no response from the computer or Odin3 when the phone is in download mode and connected through USB.
that's odd and maybe that's not good at all.
I'm starting to think the problem could be hardware related, especially in a situation where odin can't see the phone in download mode (i.e. no software layer is interfering).
Is there any glaring damage/scratch/missing parts on the usb port?
Sincerely, if I could return it I would try that at this point.

So I took a look at the port under a scope today and discovered that one of the pins (the middle one) in the micro usb port on the phone seems to be completely gone! Not sure what each pin does but I'm assuming that one is probably used to communicate to whatever the phone is connected to...
Luckily I have access to a parts phone that I can take apart for a replacement port so probably tomorrow I will attempt surgery on the phone! Will report back with further progress after I have done so.
Well I'm happy to report that that was definitely the problem! I replaced the micro USB port on the phone today during my lunch break, put the phone back together and plugged it into a PC here. It immediately detected the phone so I'm pretty happy! Guess I'll be trying out some ICS roms tonight when I get home!

Not entirely sure what kind of process might be needed, but is it at all possible to use the older method of transferring files between a computer to an Android device (USB Mass Storage) instead of MTP?
MTP (in my experience) is... not ideal in most cases. File transfers are seemingly slower, can only do one thing at a time (I think if your transferring a file, you can't even browse other folders on the MTP device), and sometimes file transfers just get stuck for no reason. Was trying to copy over a few PDF's to my N10 and it seems to just hang randomly, had to reboot the device 4 times already (twice to just create and rename a folder).
what about the option in settings -> storage -> and tap the menu button on the top right and select USB Computer connection?

I had the same problem at first, but I realized my USB ports on the front end of my PC arent USB 2.0, so I plugged it into the back, and works like a charm. Just a thought.

My N10 is rooted and my computer runs xubuntu 12.04; I don't have a window box to test... Any suggestions? Thanks!

Unfortunately the answer is no.
There was a long discussion on the Galaxy Nexus forums about it a while back.
I also wish for a usb mass storage option for compatibility with radios for playing music. They don't read mtp/ptp for any generic one I've come across.

Hmm, but what's the main thing stopping this from being possible? I thought I heard of a few JB devices that were able to get USB Mass Storage (LG Optimus G I think has a method, or whatever the phone is that has similar parts to a Nexus 4), and a Galaxy Tab I used to have had Mass Storage in ICS.
Mass storage is possible when the sdcard volume is actually a separate disk. On the Nexus 10 this is an "emulated" sdcard and cannot use USB mass storage safely because that protocol gives exclusive control to PC.
The easiest solution is to use one of the many wireless transfer apps like AirDroid.
Another option for Linux users if you really want a wired transfer is to use adbfs. This is a FUSE wrapper around the usb android debug protocol.

adbfs would give you seamless mounting just like USB Mass Storage.
Another solution, though not a seamless mount, is QtADB: http://qtadb.wordpress.com/

dear espionage,
i just wanted to share this with you in case it would be helpful. in fact, you might even have more technical know-how to find out how i accidentally managed this useful fix. first, the reason i was looking for this MTP to USB storage was my habit of synchronizing my thumb-drive to my desktop using any free synching software. this of course, can be only be done when the storage device is recognized as a DRIVE. unfortunately, i believe with the updating of the OS to 4.1 onwards, the USB storage option has been removed, and now only access to MTP is possible. the bad side to this is that one's device is recognized as a portable media device and this means i can no longer synch like i did before the contents of the SD card to my desktop.
second, i found the solution accidentally by installing MultiMount-SD v.2.5 into my Sony Xperia V (LT25i). accidentally i say, because when i clicked on it for the first time, it wouldn't work. it showed a help tip saying that i should trying enabling what it called an MTP fix provided by the program. i did this, restarted the program and guess what happened. there occurred a looping sequence (i guess unending) device recognition-mount and unmount (the PC sounded this off many times), since there was no end to it, i decided to UNINSTALL the program even while the recognition loop was going on. in the meantime one could see a drive appearing in the EXPLORER with a (?), then it would appear with an assigned drive letter, then finally disappear, and so on.
i successfully uninstalled the MultiMount apk, and surprisingly even with the message that the device wasn't properly recognized or installed, i could now connect my Xperia and it mounts as a USB storage device and no longer MTP. to test this 'accident', i tried connecting it to my desktop, running Windows 7, and it worked without any hitches! I don't really mind losing the MTP option, sides it's very limited in its connectivity with the PC. Another bonus, is despite this, i can still communicate with my device through the MyPhoneExplorer program that allows one to send text messages and other stuff. This was one wonderful accident.
oh, one last thing, even with rebooting my phone, the setup seems to have become a 'permanent fix'. now, when the device is connected one sees in the activated portions in the top menu saying: USB Storage - SD card connected to PC. This was never there before... And i wonder what MultiMountSD must have left permanently to allow my Xperia V to now connect as USB storage. Yahoo!!!
i hope though, you could see what the technical side of this accident is, so that somehow something more stable could be done or programmed without having to go through the 'accidental' procedure i have detailed above.

I had this issue with Ubuntu 12.04 too, after I updated to 13.04 it started to work like a charm . You can also try changing the rules in your PC, you can find how to do it in the Google website .

Thanks SmokinCharger! I guess it's quite clear that attempts to allow certain devices to be read in USB Storage mode is a hardware configuration. If your device isn't designed for it, then it won't be able to do this. It's like wanting your volkswagen to have a 6th gear... thus, what was posted previously is true:

You're welcome. Chainfire is a great and well known developer that has development many great apps including Stickmount. Look it up in Play especially the Pro version, which is "The price is aimed at being approximately one beer at the bar ". It works with mounting the UBS OTG. The Pro will automatically mount and unmount.

I've got my mother's Samsung A20. And i need to recover data, but the screen doesn't work.
When power button is pressed, display flashes the lock screen (wallpaper, current time and so on). And then it turns black (backlight stays on for 30 seconds, and then turns off). Pressing the button doesn't guarantee flashing the display, sometimes it goes black immediately. Touch screen gives no input as far as i know (can't hear anything when trying to type pin). Problem still occurs during and after reboots.
I managed to connect a mouse and keyboard with USB OTG, and i was able to unlock. But the phone has no MHL support, so i can't get any image through USB. I'd try pressing the power button repeatedly to get some image and inch my way through the interface, but the lockscreen interferes.
The USB port is set to Charging Only mode, so i can't copy files to my computer. USB Debugging is disabled, bootloader is locked.
Does anybody have a clue, how to get image? Some way to get data? Maybe some keyboard shortcuts, so i can disable lockscreen and make my way easier? And maybe disable 20 alarms in the morning?

I like to be helpful so I'll try to give you some suggestions but I hope others pitch in who know far more than I do.
I never use the USB cable anymore to operate my phone from my PC (but my screen isn't broken so your situation will be much harder).
I connect to my phone from Windows over Wi-Fi without USB all the time, and I can unlock my screen from the PC, and I can mount my entire Android device as a drive letter on Windows over Wi-Fi, etc., so "maybe" (just maybe though), you can consider using either a WebDav server on Android to access your files and/or adb to bring up and manipulate activities on Android....

However, I don't know if adb will work for you if you can't turn on USB debugging in the first place... but as of Android 12, adb now works completely over Wi-Fi (see screenshots below) without needing the USB cable to establish the initial connection like it used to be prior to Android 12.

If the screen problem is "just" hardware and not software, and if you can turn on Wireless Debugging, you might be able to display your phone over scrcpy or vysor (both of which use adb over Wi-Fi) as shown in the screenshots below on my phone - which never needs the USB cable connection.
Hope this helps, but you seem to need folks who know more than I do as adb/vysor/scrcpy all work for me because I can set up USB Debugging & Wireless Debugging as shown below.
Note that you might have an FTP server or a WebDav Server on your Android phone, and if you do, you might be able to at least transfer important files since they each can mount your entire Android phone as a drive letter on Windows over Wi-Fi (without needing the USB cable).

A20 can have only Android 9, 10 or 11, but thanks for ideas anyway.
I didn't even know adb can work over WiFi, I'll look into it. Hopefully this version can do it too.

Ooops. My bad. I apologize. You'll need the USB cable in Android 11 for a moment to establish the connection first. Then you can switch over to Wi-Fi after that (or you can stay on USB).

What is the best XDA solution to control Android on the PC & recover data over Wi-Fi when the user suddenly has an unresponsive broken screen?
I made the mistake of buying this tablet, so -thanks- Walmart for the unexpected, unwelcome headaches.
I got it for reading ebooks, because of the slightly larger screen compared to my phone. I saw it was limited when I got it home and turned it on, but I was still able to install a couple of book-reader apps so I thought it would be OK for my purposes. But when I plug it into my Windows 11 laptop with the USB cable the tablet doesn't show up on the computer. I have books on the laptop to transfer over.
Is there any way I can force the USB to be a data transfer connection instead of only a battery charger? There is no "use USB for" option when it's plugged in, like there is on my phone. Is there maybe a third party app I could install that will enable this -usually- normal function? Thanks, any advice and help is appreciated!

Enable MTP:
Settings > Connected devices > USB > File transfer
Enable ADB:
Settings > About Tablet > Build number (7 x tap)
Settings > System > Advanced > USB debugging
Some people like Calibre on their desktop for organizing books. I believe that understands MTP.
Me, I use my adbsync.exe (in my sig) to synchronize directories. It uses ADB (duh).

I did find the developer mode and turned on USB debugging. Also, I selected File Transfer under Default USB Configuration.
Under Settings > Connected devices there is no USB on my tablet, only +Pair New Device and Connection preferences, Bluetooth.
The tablet still doesn't show up at all, when I connect via USB to my laptop.
Is there anything else I should try? Under System > Developer options maybe? How about OEM Unlocking? Disable adb authorization timeout? Thanks!
Are you sure that you have a data cable? Cheesy ones only supply power.
If you're connected to Windows enabling/disabling USB debugging should make it "bong".
To check out if I am using an inferior cable, I switched to my cellphone cable. It works fine on my cell, but no luck with this tablet. I know it makes no sense!

Sorry, I missed your response.
These devices come up in the MTK preloader whenever they reboot.
You don't actually need to load a loader or do anything.
Connect the USB. I presume you're using Windows? Does it "bong"?
Use the regular Android reboot option on the power menu.
Does it do a bunch of bong-ing and Windows flashes popups complaining about devices?
You may have a hardware problem and you need to return the device.
Wow, Renate, you've got some serious skills. Pretty impressive to turn such a low-end device into a custom machine...
I'm having trouble pulling the boot.img from this device... If anyone was willing to share the stock boot.img for the 100071481 that would be SUPER appreciated...
otherwise I'm just going to keep trying to get this MTK client thing to work although nothing seems to get the device to be visible...

I've had problems getting that to run under Windows. I finally used a Raspberry Pi with Linux.
I was working on writing a native Windows MTK client but I haven't got that working yet.
After successfully writing a native Windows EDL (Qualcomm) client it was a bit disheartening to dive into the MediaTek gobble-dee-gook.
FWIW: I've not had luck with fastboot boot whatever.img
It works fine with fastboot flash boot whatever.img, then fastboot reset
@Renate - THANKS! for all your help with this onn tablet . Sorry I've not been keeping current on responses. I use the tablet to read books on while getting medical treatments and I was able to upload the files to my Google drive and then download to the tablet.
I'm on a Windows 11 laptop and it doesn't "bong" when I attach the tablet. I'll try the reboot option and let y'all know .

@Lookstwice I haven't got up to Windows 11, so maybe it's hiding some stuff from you.
It could also be that the 7" has some differences to the 8"
The USB/VID of my 8" is 0e8d/201c (MediaTek)
Try using UsbView.exe
See if anything appears/disappears as you plug in. For sanity, check against a known working device.
Oh, and if you're thinking reading, you really ought to consider Eink devices.
Yeah, a lot of them are annoying and underpowered, but see if you like the concept first.
I like the Onyx Poke3, but buttons/no buttons is contentious and personal.
I use no buttons but a tiny Bluetooth clicker. I love it!
