Solid phone with a great batterylife, rapid fast processor and a really good camera with GCAM

Absolutely loving this phone! It looks great, is snappy as hell, the speaker sounds amazing, so is the screen. And it satisfies all my emulation needs, such as DosBox, Dolphin and PPSSPP. It also runs quite a lot of the Nvidia Shield games i used to love!

Great tools all the way around.

I just received mine and really liking it (coming from the Axon 7). Is there no notification light to let you know when you've received a call or text??? Please enlighten me!

There is no notification light, but you can use always-on-display, for me AOD is even more better.

For me that does not seem very good . A waste of power and excess light during night time hours. Just say'n

So it's an even BETTER upgrade story, though for the same reasons as when I went from Priv to A7. Sheer amount of stock features is uncanny!! Video record your screen - say whaaaaaaaaat?! And cameras are finally decent. Best of all, we now have root and all the other goodies, thus I can only imagine how A10 will fly with a new kernel for battery life like we had w/ A7.

Question: Are you in the US? I have this phone (12gb RAM Global version) and I am still not happy with the camera.... guess I need to install the Google Camera.
Have you done any mods to your device?

[Video Review] Xiaomi Redmi Note 2

Hi guys I just got this phone, check out my review video:
Camera sample pictures to be found on my blog:
http://colonelzap.blogspot.de/2015/08/xiaomi-redmi-note-2-review-mt6795-helio.html
As always, great review. In fact, I liked it so much I bit the bullet and ordered the 32GB version. I've no idea when it will arrive as there's a holiday in China now, but never mind.
One extra thing it would've been great to see in the review is an extra screen comparison. The Mi4 looked much more vibrant, but what I couldn't see is what the whites look like on the Note 2. For example, on the Oppo Find 7a and the ZTE Nubia Z7 Max, whites look a little grey and in some cases a little yellow, which I hate. My super cheap Jiayu G4S has lovely crisp whites in comparison.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video and and demonstrate some of the many features (the one handed mode is what made me take the plunge). Is root available on the standard ROM too, or just the developer firmware?
Yes, great review. I have my device now, but no point making a review because yours is better
Ummm, someone mentioned that there are issues related to high battery use with the screen on, and that there is more info on the Chinese forums (in Chinese) related to this device.
Colonel Zap, now that you have had it for a few days, how is the battery life?
whats about the battery test? could you post any screenshots about your screen time?

See Colonel Zap's blog. There's a link in the first post.
Thank you for the review!
The camera samples' image quality is seems pretty bad in my opinion.. at outside a big part of the images are blurred with a lot of ghost effects., and looks like an oil painting... disappointing.
Wow, awesome
Hey
Can you make an in depth comparison with meizu m2 note
I want to know which one better at what?
Specially display and camera

Nice review and I'm searching a reliable e-shop to buy one.
Thanks for the great review!
I'm torn between buying this phone and the ZTE Nubia Z7 (not mini or MAX)
They'll both cost me roughly the same (the Nubia is ~30 euros more expensive, but the included headphones make up for some of it), and I feel like the ZTE has better specs overall, but I'm a bit worried because it's a one and a half year old device versus a pretty new one, as well as a 32 bit processor versus a 64 bit one.
What do you guys think?

I've done some research, but I live in Europe so I don't know if what I've found is valid for other regions. From what I've seen, Oppomart seems to have the best price for me and as far as I know it's a very reliable site. If anyone knows any better site please do let us know

The Nubia is probably a better device in most aspects except the CPU, so I'd probably get that. Still, that screen + that battery may not be a good combo.

Could you please do a check on your device?

Waiting to get Global or Eu Rom instakked before i can use it properly and pas sjudgement on it. i have high hopes for it though
My opinion is that the phone is brilliant and a piece of crap at the same time.
It's brilliant in that it supports more LTE bands than pretty much any other phone (this is huge for me), is extremely hackable, has good specs at a decent price, and so on.
It's a piece of crap in that the software is buggy, the hardware was not thought out well (left-handed users like myself constantly cover the light sensor for example, long-presses are very hard to do for another example) and also, very buggy. The most glaring example is that on the stable rom's modem, it's not possible to connect to 3G networks... at all. You have to install developer firmware or the radio from it just to connect to 3G.
I would only recommend it to people who have an idea what they're getting into. Hopefully there will be a third-party ROM option for which all the features of the phone work correctly in the near future, at which point it would be a better phone.

The official global rom?
I can't use it because it comes with a radio file in which 3G is broken. Updating the radio file to the newer one breaks fingerprint scanner.
But as far as I could tell when I tried it, it has the same issues as the Chinese ROM.

Well, regarding the radio issue, it's already fixed, in MIUI 9.
Plus, there are issues I have which were reported 3, 4 months ago by other people which they've done nothing about.
I'm not very optimistic about it.

Internal specs are the same. Performance pretty close. You get a smaller (shorter) package. You lose the stylus, waterproofing and wireless charging. What would I do? I would keep the Note 8 if I already had it. What would I do if I needed a new phone with the latest processor and 6 gigs of ram with great build quality and an awesome screen to body ratio, I would give the MiMix2 some serious consideration. Especially if waterproofing, wireless charging and the headphone jack aren't important to you and you were looking for great bang for your buck.

Thing is, i hate having more than 1 phone, active or not hehe.
I never use the stylus, and only use wireless charging like 2-3 times a week, sometimes never.
So i guess the Mix would be a good device to change to

Personally I haven't seen you list a reason why you should switch. You already have one of the latest and greatest phones, on par with the mi mix 2. Is there something you don't like about the note 8? There needs to be a reason my man. I love my mi mix 2, but if I had a note 8 there's no way I'd switch. That's a way more expensive device.

I did the switch few hours ago, and i'm glad i did hehe.
What i did not like / never used about the Note 8 was the following:
1- Huge size
2- Wrong placement of the FP scanner
3- Low speaker sound
4- Never used the Stylus
& few more.
I know the Note 8 has a far better camera, but i hardly take pics on my phone, therefor, with all that being said, the Mi Mix 2 is the device i should have bought in the 1st place.

And besides that, I'm so old, I grew up without a mobile phone, so I can still remember not having one..

Plus one (OnePlus?) for setting an example for your kids mate. My parents always kept their phones on the kitchen counter when I was in high school, they used to berate me for taking mine with me to bed. I had a couple friends though that weren't in the best place though, so I liked to have it with me in case they needed something.
Hmm,I expect review by Monday 21 May, as Oneplus goes for sale in India from Monday.

The number one thing that is ruining camera performance is the lack of OIS. I can almost assure you that the camera will be impressive, because with a 1.22um pixel sensor combined with OIS you cannot go wrong (iPhone 8 has the same combination). One reviewer couldn't help and said he was impressed by the low-light performance. But there is an embargo at this moment.

Them waiting for reviews until after sale begins makes it sound like they are not confident in the camera performance securing sales. Just my 2¢.

My thoughts on the phone are mixed, I like the way it functions, the gestures are still a WIP and the camera is improved but Pixel 2 is better... For the price you are paying (Pixel 2 right now is 100$ more) it is a decent buy, but I would get why someone would just pay the extra 100 and get a Pixel 2

Otherwise phone is good for camera, performance, battery timing
The phone looks stunning, most beautiful phone I've ever seen. Camera is amazing, tho I haven't got a clue on how to use most of its functions and there is no tutorial either which sucks. Having the Global Model was a surprisingly disappointing buying experience since it did not come with headphones nor back cover so I had to buy one. The icons are very large as is text. That was also surprising, as I'm used to small icons and text. Despite changing both to the smallest possible it's still huge.

Thoughts
It is worthy my money¿
I think the phone is great (5 stars) but I will give it 1 star because it's been out for 6 months and even after contacting Huawei through various means including twitter, Huawei can't/doesn't care about fixing the f*ing weather app so that my town is found in the search.
All phones I have ever used can find Guildford, England, including all other Huawei phones but this one doesn't.
It's 6 months to fix a bug that would probably take 5 minutes if anyone bothered so f*** off Huawei you are too arrogant to ever get my money again.
my current phone is honor 10, i love it very much, so for my next phone i will also choose honor, honor 20 should be much better.
Surprising Phone
I got mine as part of a downsizing of my contract costs, so this cost me £20pm for a 24month contract.
For the money, it simply is incredible. Considering the phone launched at £579 (I got the 8/256GB model) the drop in price to get a 2GB/Unlimited everything else contract for less TCO than the RRP is pretty great.
The screen is bright and somehow better in sunlight than my old S8 despite the latter officially having a much better sunlight contrast. The phone performs great with a 300k+ AntuTu score, and no apps phase the thing. With a bit of work getting a consistent dark theme helps a great deal too in terms of usability and the UI feels fine to sue although I instantly switched to the familiarity of the Microsoft Launcher.
The main camera is so much better than I expected for a budget flagship. The AI Ultra Clarity mode is stunning when used outdoors. Need to test video mode but compared to the S8 the main camera is a massive step up. The selfie camera is average but I'm not too worried about that.
Overall, yes you lack stuff like a periscope zoom camera and wide angle, but considering a S10e would cost me £200 more TCO, come with 128GB less storage? It isn't enough of an upgrade to justify the expense, despite the AMOLED screen being undeniably better. Design wise, the View 20 is more than a match and the back pattern on the Phantom Blue is amazing.
Overall, so far, so good.

Guildford is listed on the app, I think you may have a user specific bug!

Thanks for posting this! I deleted data and cache of the Weather app and now the phone can find Guildford! I guess I should have tried this earlier. I am still annoyed that nobody from Huawei tried to help me with this problem.

Yeah, they should've helped a lot sooner especially for what could've been a simple fix to get back to you with. Customer Service really is important and this is a big failing frankly.
Hello if anyone here does not play the Game Fortnite but uses this phone, please contact me at [email protected] there is an exclusive in game cosmetic with the phone to claim for free and i would like it!
If anyone has this phone and does not play fortnite I would appreciate it if you could send me the code that comes with the phone to unlock a skin in game for fortnite. I would really appreciate it if you could email me the code at [email protected] since I want the Honor 20, but cannot afford it at the moment and would like the fortnite skin at least for now.
F*A*C*T

I just switched to honor devices first time and it's difficult to use
May be it's due to pie upgradation or honor device but it requires too much permissions for any app
I was panic till 1 day because I was not getting notification until I open the app then I gave permission for notification which lead to resolution

yes it is difficult to use first time but with the time you are going to love this device
Honor View20 is such an interesting phone. It's hard to love when it was the first phone with a 48MP camera, ToF sensor ect.....

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Huawei Mate XS, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Huawei Mate XS is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Got my xs for a week now and loving it more and more everyday.
Once you put the stock bumper you don t have to baby it, it doesn't scratch when you put it on a desk or so.
Managed to install Google somehow and except a few hickups (uber not working) I can use the playstore, in apps transactions, YouTube....
Camera is great, cooling is perfect, it s never hot even playing game, supercharging is extremely fast.
All in all it s very expensive but it s worth it if money isn t an issue.
Where were you able to purchase?

I love the device. I have been using it for two weeks. It is fantastic. Honestly I can not put it down. It is fast and smooth. Almost not issue with the software at all. All apps are compatible with the 8 inch screen when unfolded. Multitasking is nice. The screen is beautiful. No heat at all even with playing for long time. The battery is very good. The charging time is insane. The speakers are very good. It supports stereo speakers. Overall I can not leave it at all.

Hi after I press the red button to unfold the device sometimes the button makes a click sound until itself fully returns to normal position. Is not an issue but noticed while I was using it.
Does yours behave the same way.
thanks

The Perfect Phone
Finally, someone got it right. I've been buying smart phones for 25 years and this is the first one. Purchased from Clove the UK edition at less than a couple hundred above list. Buying the correct charger from Liaow. Used Phone Clone to transfer whatever I could from my Galaxy Fold. Had to add Gboard keyboard with an apk file. Email and browser that come with the phone work fine with my Google account. Browser uses Google search. That takes me to any map I might need. The Mate 20 X was almost there but this one is there. A perfect phone.
Gonna get mine on this coming Friday! Any tricks or tips for this beast phone!

I would get the original charger, and the leather case from Liaow.
https://liaow.com/huawei-mate-xs-case-black.html
I've seen them on eBay but not sure if there 100% legit.
I would also look for the most recent video on installing GMS, they change weekly so look for the most recent one to get Google running with no issues
Anyway guys does Netflix stream in HD if we install thru gms? Or only SD?
I got my mate xs for a week now and loving it too much.
Enjoying big screen in emails, YouTube, Twitter and almost everything.
Missing only the m pen.
