need advice on replacing galaxy S2 tablet - Galaxy Tab S2 General

hello everyone,
I have had a samsung galaxy tab S2 SM-T813 for over a year now but unfortunately this weekend it had an accident where the screen cracked and it bent a little so i need to replace it. my options right now are i can get the same S2 tab right now on sale for $399.99 CAD but i also have been looking at the lower end galaxy tab A SM-T590 for $429.99 CAD. from researching the tab A has a bigger 10.5" screen. has the same amount of ram as the S2 and the CPU might be a lower end snapgragon as the tab a has a 450 vs the 650 in the S2. i know the S2 is getting up in age but i had it rooted with lineage OS 15 oreo on it so it would it will still last me for a few more years if need be
anyone think i should stay with the S2 or spend the extra cash on the Tab A?
Thanks

I think that you neee to choose how important it is amoled screen for you?
With Tab A you will have only lcd screen, but you will gain Oreo ,and maybe Pie later.
T590 it's a mainstream device,tab s2 was at a launch time a high end device.
If Tab S2 meet your requirments at this moment, buy it.
If you worry about future updates, buy T590.
You only know the answer.
Cheers

thanks for the reply. i ended up getting the S2 again. i know the battery is slow at charging but it never bothered me that much and i had rooted it before so i know in the future i can get a later version of android on it. i'll probably root it again after a few months if no problems crop up that can be fixed under warranty

Galaxy Note Mega

Hi guys, again I see no one has posted about the new Galaxy Mega.
Anyone considering getting one?
I was thinking about the 8, but a 6.3 or 5.8 inch screen is tempting.
Phone Arena has good comparison pics.
I think Samsung is testing the market to find out what the optimum size is for
handheld devices. Opinions?
Dammit the name of the thread should be "Galaxy Mega"
Yes I am tempted by the Galaxy Mega.
My route so far is...
- Galaxy Note ( not big enough for meeting notes so gave it to my son)
- Galaxy 7.7 ( gave it to my mum and bought the note 10.1)
- Galaxy Note 10.1 ( very happy with it but too big to take to a restaurent)
If i didn't already have the Note 10.1 I would probably go for the note 8
I would like a new phone and I can't decide between the mega 6.3 or wait for note 3.....
Bearing in mind I have zero patience, you know what will happen in May when the mega becomes available...I think one spen device is enough, and the battery life on the mega should be good......
Sent from my GT-N8000 using Tapatalk HD
Is the Mega part of the Note line (ie, SPen-enabled)? Nothing I read indicated that, so I thought of more as a predecessor to the Galaxy S line (ie, just a really big phone, with no SPen).
Anyway, I already have the Note 2, and while I don't intend to ever go to a smaller device (they look so, so small and cramped now), I don't think I would want a much bigger device. I have small hands, and while I can grip the phone in one hand, I do sometimes worry that I don't have a firm enough grip, and and that if (eg) someone were to bump into me hard enough, I would lose my grip on it.
I think I could go up to 6.0", but not more.
But, I really like have my SPen, so I'll wait for the Note 3.
I had the note when it first came out and while it was a great phone, it just wasn't practical for carrying around in my pocket. but saying that, once I sold it I did miss it. A couple of weeks ago I went and bought the note 2. I took it back to the shop the same day as it was just too big. I ended up going backwards and buying An S2. I had the S3 for Christmas last year and had it for about a week!. I really like the size of the S2 and as I am always flashing custom roms and generally messing with my phone, I'm not too worried if I break it as it didn't cost that much. My Note 10.1 is still running stock as I think it is pefect the way it is. I did root it 2 days after buying it but that is all I have done to it.
Mega 6.3
The phone is going to be launched in two weeks here in India
I cant wait to get the 6.3 mega :fingers-crossed: ,
but.. somehow just a lil worried if that massive thing is not gonna fit in my pockets.
Hey any one has an idea if Xda will open a new forum for the Mega devices?
I really would like to root the mega.. and use a tablet interface on it..
Things would be so so so much easier..
I really hope the XDA team can open a new forum.

[Q] Change the Galaxy Tab for a Galaxy Note?

Hi! I'm new at this forum and recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 tablet and I'm not really sure what to think of it yet. I was looking for a tablet I could use exceptionally for college purposes: to write essays, to take notes, to browse the web and essentially manage my college life (and of course watching a couple of movies from time to time ). I found the Galaxy Note 10.1 on the internet and fell in love with it, but the Galaxy Tab 3 was on sale on a local store and I read some good reviews about it so I bought it. I found out that it lags so much it becomes irritating and reboots at least once per day. I eventually installed Nova Launcher and the lag almost disapparead but it still happens when I'm browsing the web from time to time, and the reboots still continue , so I may return it or ask for another one. I read a couple threads saying you could root the Tab and use it for note taking too, but I'm not sure about rooting it now, since I will lose my warranty and I need it now because I'm in my first year in college. The display resolution really doesn't bother me that much, of course a better resolution screen wouldn't hurt a thing, but what I really want is something portable and productive so I don't have to carry around my laptop which is very heavy...
Should I buy the Galaxy Note or stay with the Tab?
Hi.
I make the same brainstorm in every new gadget i want to buy.
Better performance vs more expensive.
The key is value for money. Your valuation vs you money.
If the Tab doesnt meet your expectations, its has low value for you and turns out to be more expensive in the end comparing to the investment on a Note (2012 is cheap now).
Got a 10.1 and for note taking in meeting, net surfing emails etc its the BEST.
Take my following advice with salt and pepper:
I think you have already made the decision for swap it for a note and need some moral support
So here it is: Go for it

Nuno

Note 10.1 2012 is not worth to buy, imho. If you really want Note, buy newer one. Samsung hasnt upgraded this device and I have already problems with that. You cannot share SNote files. Apps for smart-devices are nowadays often developed for Android 4.2/4.3 because those give much more opportunities to develope functions in apps. So if you are thinking to keep that device for somentime and buy smart-accessories, you will have problems. But if you are looking a cheap tablet with a pen, notngoing to share SNotes or not going to buy smart-accessories, then you might want to get this tablet. Otherwise, stay away from it!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) is the CHOICE!
Don't listen people that you say 2014 is better and blabla...
I should have possibility to compare Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (GT-P6050).
Even the 2014 has better HW, GT-N8000 has more followers and even official Samsung doesn't update GT-N8000 firmware from 4.1.2 to higher one, firmware on 2014 is Android 4.3 (by my oppinion worst Android ever!).:crying: But never mind. When I compare this two devices 2014 had lags, problems with Wi-Fi and even with S-Pen.
Antutu benchmark (after customization ROMS in both devices) show mi score Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) = 20976 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (P6050) = 31500. Really big difference. :good: But even 2014 is most high-perfomace tablet on the market, I felt GT-N8000 more efective than 2014. Strange, isn't it? But it's only my oppinion.
PRO's 2012 (GT-N8000)
-Big users support
-A lot of tuned apps
-User friendly
-Great work with S-Pen
-Price = $249
CON's
-Old firmware (but after customizitation you can have even KitKat 4.4.2)
-IPS resolution only 1280x800
-Less memory (16GB) but i Saw 32 GB version too!
PRO's
-One of big perfomance tablet ever!
-Great display resolution 2560*1600
-to future best tablet ever
CON's
-Unwanted apps, a lot of bloatware (but you can unistall it as you want)
-still new device, untuned apps
-A lot od lags
-New S-Pen do what should't be
-Price = $499
Thank you so much for all your replies! After reading a lot of reviews I decided to buy the galaxy note 10.1. (2012 version) and so far i'm very happy with it! I hadn't browsed a lot about the android version problem so i didn't know that it was so far late in the android version but in my case i don't find it a very big issue and i'm very happy with it, there is no lag at all (even when running a ton of apps). The only problem that i encountered was changing the wallpaper so it fits perfectly on the screen, because everytime i tried to change it im forced to crop the picture and turns the oicture to a crappy resolution... I was a little afraid since I hated the tab but so far so good. Of course I hope they update it in the future. I've been searching the web about roms and roots but I understood nothing... can someone enlight me or direct me to a topic where it is explained? My note is the gt-n8010. All I need is a shiny new cover for my note and i'm a very happy costumer! And maybe in a few years i will buy the next version

(you might want to update the firmware first before doing this)
If you want to use any pic for a wallpaper do this:
Install simple image wallpaper live wallpaper. It lets you select sny pic you want for your wall and it works great and is free.
Go do it now.

I would prefer N8013 over Tab 3 10.1 because:
More RAM (2GB vs 1GB)
Quad-core CPU (ARM vs X86)
S Pen
100% virtual buttons on the bottom (true tablet operation)
Flash (it does not work with X86 Android)
I prefer the note 10.1 over the tablet.
More functionally and productively.

Tab S 2 What gives!!!

Why bother releasing a 2 version if its no better than the 1???
Just looked at the spec for both 8.0 and 9.7 and its pretty much identical to the 8.4 and 10.5 apart from the weight of the 10.5 has been reduced somewhat due to it being a smaller screen, woopdeedoo!!
I was expecting something better than the same old 1.9 and 1.3 quad, maybe even a 12" Tab S ??
I will stick to my 8.4 and 10.5 and wait for the Tab S 3 in 18 months or so
Still waiting to upgrade my Note 8, what's going on there??? No Note 8 version 2
I thought the S2 would have 4GB of ram but no I rather buy the S1 then the S2
If your main usage isn't watching movies on it. I think yes, the tab s2 is better.
For me the reasons why I chose the tab s2 is because of it's screen ratio of 4:3 (which is actually better for browsing and reading), it's lighter than the S1 (which is a big plus) and it's got a faster processor (I've seen speeds of 54000 on antutu). and a fingerprint unlocker which is actually usable
If i did not watch movies, I would not even buy an oled display tablet at all, as they can be a right pain when it comes to white/bright when it comes to power usage, I would get an lcd display tablet, oled is the only reason i buy Samsung.
John.
I did read the processor was fast but both my S1's are still snappy as hell so I doubt I would see a difference anyway
I think the 2 side by side are too close to warrant an upgrade from S1 to S2 was more my point, i am disapointed that I have to wait till S3 for a worthwhile upgrade
I wont buy any other brand as Samsung top line really are thee best out there
I'm upgrading from a note 10.1, although this was a very good tablet his time has come
But especially the weight was bothering me, 600g was just too much to use as an e-reader.
But I get custom ROM and kernel and I get a high score of 49 to 50k if I'm lucky

New model on the horizon?

Looking to get a tab s2 9.7 to replace my aging tab s. They seem to be a bit thin on the ground in the UK. Anyone know if an upgrade is around the corner?

The update happened last year in the shape of the S3 9.7. No update for the S2 8.0 though.
I need to replace my dead Pixel C. My birthday is this week and expect to get a few amazon cards.
Will put this money toward a S2 8.0 tablet (want a smaller form factor than the 10 inch, I think). Mostly for reading news, web browsing and Sonos controller). I won't be pushing it hard.
My plan - if I don't lose willpower - is to wait until March conference where the S9 phone will be presented. Thinking MAYBE they will add a tablet, or two, to be released soon as well. I don't think they will but would hate to buy a tablet next week and less than two months later a new tablet with USB C port, no buttons on the front... gets released.
Your call, obviously, but I would hold off on an S2. It is still a good tablet, but it's now a generation behind and approaching 2 years old. That is generally the end of the line for software support from Samsung, so unless you are comfy switching to Lineage OS (or other custom ROM), that will be it for updates.
That said, I'm not sure there will be another 8" tablet from Samsung. The trend seems to be moving towards 12" Chrome + Android convertibles. If you really want a smaller tablet, the 8" S2 may be your best bet.

For me, it all comes down to cost. If the tab S2 8" can be had for £150/$200, I'd still be tempted. There are some other options out there which should be investigated. I bagged a Huawei Mediapad M3 for the Mrs yesterday, brand new for only $200 on newegg.com. Looking forward to see how it compares to my T715 when I see her in March.
Now that I've given it some thought - if any S4's are going to be announced that would be for both sizes. Since the S3 9.7 came out fairly recently, I doubt the S4 is coming now but more likely in September.
There is something going around about a Huawei m5 that is suggested in some code somewhere. Just to put it out there.

Update: Don't really need the latest and greatest for what I use it for. Decided to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8 incher. It would be perfect if it didn't have physical buttons. Love the size. Love the screen ratio... It's speedy.

Well done on the purchase Rick. :highfive:
The screen and weight of the S2 8" is second to none.
There is an app called, "All in one gestures," that can at least swap the order of the capacitive buttons if you want to go for the traditional Android order.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?

I've had mine a little over 1 year. Use it mainly to read books and newspapers. 8" is the perfect size and 4:3 the perfect ratio for reading, imo.

Totally agree Imacmil. :highfive:
I use habit browser with a user agent as PC. All webpages therefore render in desktop mode which suites this screen perfectly.
People often complain with this tablet about the small battery but I'm happy as the reduction in weight makes using this a breeze for long periods.
If they ever do bring out a new version, I hope they realise the great stuff about the existing tablet, weight, headphone jack, but address the CPU, RAM and make it USB-C. :victory:

Samsung likely to reveal Snapdragon 835 powered Galaxy Tab S4 at MWC

https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-likely-to-reveal-snapdragon-835-powered-galaxy-tab-s4-at-mwc
This is to soon idk why Samsung didn't wait till fall or next Spring and make it with a 845, The S3 is only a year old. I guess this is for people who have a older tablet like the original S or maybe S2. I don't see a reason to upgrade even if i had the money too, i replaced my Nexus 9 with the S3 and i love it. Don't get me wrong i thought i'd never replace my N9 but it had its faults like freezing/locking up and it lagged, screen had a slight case of pulsating light from the screen. All of which don't exist with my new S3 not to mention double the Ram and updated CPU.
I think they're more likely to introduce a replacement for the Tab A. The Tab S3 wasn't so much of a hit that they would feel the need to follow up on it so soon. AT&T didn't even have a version of the LTE, and no major retailer stocked the 825. I had to buy the verizon 827 and change the network settings.
If the leak is correct (always big IF), looks like it could be an upgrade for the original Tab S (10.5" and 16:10 ratio). In that case, I've got no buyers' remorse with the Tab S3. I very much prefer the 4:3 factor over my old Tab S. A 4:3 10.5" Tab S4 though would probably and shamelessly lead me to upgrade...

Better to have no new tablets than a disaster like the S3...
Anyway the speculation is that all android OEMs are going to launch devices once Chrome OS for tablets gets announced.
Typically in the past, one or two months before a new tablet is announced full specs and pics have already leaked. This means that it's unlikely that the Tab S4 is announced before that happens.
After 12 months my contract with isp will end and i will get s4 or s5 if it get out at that time. Right now my s3 rock my world!
$600 will be a tough sell when the iPad is $399

as an upgrade to the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, definitely. looking forward to an AMOLED screen at that resolution, plus improved S-Pen. just hope Samsung doesn't screw the pooch.
the OTHER thing i'm hoping for though? maybe Samsung pulls an Acer, and makes the Tab S4 with ChromeOS.

Well, there is also Huawei's MediaPad M5 10 Pro, with the M-pen. This comes with a nice keyboard cover as well. Thus, Samsung is going to have some competition in Android Tablets supporting pens.

agreed. one thing i saw in a review: the PRO version has a slightly blurrier screen vs the non-pro. something to do with the extra layer for Pen sensitivity.
thing is right now if you need an high-end Android tablet, you're kind of in limbo between the S4, whenever that is; the S3, which has a processor that is looking less appealing with each passing month; and Huawei M5 Pro, which was announced two months ago or something, but still can't be bought in Canada/US (outside of eBay).
that said, the Tab S3 keeps fluctuating in price, with Samsung floating the $100 instant rebate every other month it seems. can get the S3 again for $450 USD from B&H right now. drop it another $50, throw in the keyboard case, and i'm in.

I have the Tab S3 and it is an excellent tablet. Most of the issues there are ones of software, not hardware, although some elements of the Samsung Experience should have been better to allow for better multitasking. In addition, if the tablet was somewhat longer (10.8 inches, for example), it would have allowed the keyboard to be more spacious. The keyboard badly needs an "Escape" key, which it does not have. Yes, this tablet could have used a faster processor, that's for sure.
My Note 10 holds a charge for about 15 minutes. Not really worth a new battery, and I want an LTE radio. The S3 is getting old at this point, and Samsung support for it is probably about at an end. I at least want a chance at getting Android Praline. I gifted my mother an iPad, and it was nice, but I am entirely in the Google ecosystem.
I just wish they would make a clean system with S-pen capabilities on top. Based on my experience with the Note 10, I have never bought a Samsung phone. I can live with the junk piled up in a tablet, but not on a phone.
