Battery Life on Pixel 2XL - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Has anyone been getting battery life like this on the Pixel 2XL? After an hour or so of screen on time I'll already be at 80%. I think I noticed it in December. I've been getting 3.5 or 4 hours of screen on time whereas I used to get 6 or 7.

I would say, losing 10% battery for 30min screen on time is quite normal. At this rate you would get 5hrs of SOT.
Judging battery life based on SOT only is quite wrong too. What you were doing on that screen matters. Gaming will be very different from netflix. It also depends on your network signal strength, whether you were on wifi or mobile data, what other background stuffs were running....

You could run accubattery for a week or so and see if your battery is degrading. It also does a pretty good job tracking what apps are using the most battery

Do you use it at maximum brightness?
My first 10% constantly give me about 50-55 minutes

Have you changed usage habits in any way? (more gaming or anything else that maxes out CPU)
Are you in a cell network fringe area and barely get signal? If your phone is struggling to maintain signal, that will drain battery fast.
Do you have a lot of apps using battery/data in the background?
Have you tried a factory reset?
I have not noticed any degradation in battery life since December. I still get at least 6 hours SOT between recharges. When I am using the phone, it typically loses ~10% per hour. When phone is asleep, it drains less than 1% per hour.

I notice me too a drop of battery life since December Patch.
10% give me 1h10 min of video (in wifi) Now it's more 40min, 50min.
And data suck my battery like nothing, it's like snow under sun.

I don't use my phone for gaming at all. I do live in an area now where I don't get great service, but I'm on wifi like 90% of the time. I do keep apps open all the time. I haven't changed how I use this phone at all. I used to get almost 9 hours of screen on time with many apps still open in the background, but I now I don't. I'm starting to think I need a new battery.

I think it's my battery. A couple of months of ago my phone would cut off when I tried taking a picture with Snapchat when my battery was below 30% or so. I looked it up and it's sort of common. Someone said a battery replacement was needed.

Try turning off LTE for better battery life

I just did this and have noticed that my SoT has increased DRAMATICALLY. Take this with a grain of salt as it's the first time I've run this test, but previously, even at the DIMMEST setting, I noticed that I could only get about 27 minutes of SoT at 90% battery life. Just right now, in a bright room (my screen is set at the dimmest setting on auto, but it is NOT at the dimmest the screen can be), I just got 42 minutes of SoT at 90% battery. That is a 55% increase in battery life, not factoring in the additional battery it takes because the screen is also brighter.
Will leave LTE off to see how this test progresses and if I can repeat it, but give it a try and let me know if it works as well for you as it did for me.
When Qualcomm first started making LTE chips, they were very inefficient. This might be the case with Samsung as well.
Talk about small sample size... 27 minutes? Just using different apps or playing a game for 5 minutes can explain this.

I don't think you read my post entirely. The variance is a 55% difference, which is huge. Before, I would get 27 minutes max at the screen's dimmest setting. Right now I just got 42 minutes at a much brighter setting. App usage is pretty much the same. It was mostly playing WordFeud, which isnt' a battery hungry app.

I did. What I'm saying is this: this morning I read news for 10 minutes, and was at 97% battery afterwards. If I wake up and play asphalt 8 for 10 minutes tomorrow morning, I'll probably be around 94% afterwards. If my Wi-Fi was turned off this morning and is on tomorrow, does it mean Wi-Fi on has a 100% increase effect on battery usage?

I don't play graphic intensive games, so that's not a factor. The most battery draining thing I do on my phone is web surfing and I didn't do any of that in the first 10% today or on previous days I've checked SoT at 90%.

I think his point was more generic: 27 minutes of use is far too low to be of any significant value for a battery test.
A lot could happen under the hood without you even knowing it: google sync processes, updates, etc.
Do the same for a couple of day, and you'll get a point.

Of course I repeated this test several times - After about 4 or 5 times, I noticed the highest I could get was 27 minutes. Today, after turning off LTE, I was able to get 42 minutes with the screen at a higher brightness.
At the moment when on LTE I seems get a very weak signal, 1 bars most of time. With 3G I'm getting almost full signal 90% of the time. This in itself would play a massive part in battery drain.
I've not switched to 3G only yet, as I still get through a work day with loads of battery left.
spotty or low signal strength does affect battery usage. LTE since it is more localized in coverage than gsm/edge (2g,3g,3g+,4g etc) so if you're not in a heavy coverage area and you dont really need the speed boost of lte, switching to 4g/3g only will benefit you in battery savings.
This may change when 700Mhz is rolled out to more and more areas as it can cover a much larger area and in some cases may provide better and more stable signal strength than non-lte. Until then though, it's a pretty safe bet that disabling LTE will improve your battery life.
I have yet to get less than 24hours of battery life per charge. Not that that means anything to anyone else.
Updated stats in the images. The plateau is overnight when I turn on airplane mode. My SoT has never been this good before.

First of all do cash reset/factory reset and then check your battery life. Probably your phone overloaded with old garbage/soft etc...
Not really possible for battery to be degraded after 6months of usage, unless you charged from 0-100 3-4 times a day lol

btw, do u know the charge cycle for the 6p? and how was the quality of huawei battery?

Are you frequently in areas with bad cellular signal? That will make the radio transmit at maximum power all the time, draining your battery.

No - not really.
Not Band 12 on most days - Band 4 for LTE data.
The only difference is I setup for the first time a Tasker profile to turn on Waze when I plug into the my car & it activates the Bluetooth and then Waze.
I make it a habit to turn off the High Accuracy GPS manually after disconnection.
It's my first Tasker activity ever so not sure if it's doing something in the background I am unaware of.
One thing I noticed that made a big difference, is to clear cash after every update, I don't use phone much, but I can average 5+ SOT hours, per cycle, never went below 20%. Some times my phone goes for 3 days with 2 or so SOT before it reach the 20%.

Battery drainers:
Brightness (outside)
Heat (outside/brightness)
Usage pattern
Signal coverage
Bad update
Play store
Erroneous apps
Battery life obsession (personal one of mine)
Bad battery (build quality)
These are all factors that can cause quick draining of the battery.

Just popped in a new Cameron sino battery from eBay. 25.00. Wasn't bad camera glass is tedious but not impossible. You can always get another one and pop it in if you do break it. No more shut offs. And yes the batteries in these phones are bad but I was still able to use it, just couldn't let it get below about 25% or it's possible that it would just shut right down. But now that is over with for 25.00. these are still very good phones if you are willing to do a little work.

Is the battery life still good? And on that note, how good is the standby drain (asking here because no one seems to have posted on that topic).
I'm worried about battery life because I'm seriously thinking about getting this over the OP6, but there aren't many reviews out there.

After 12 June update, sot has decreased. Now I get about 6~7 hrs BUT my brother (he uses this phone too) still gets 8 hrs. I'm on 20 June update but there's 22 June update (I didn't understand why ASUS gave this update very early. Also it is 410MB but the others were about 200~300 MB so I'm hopeful about this update) So I can't talk about the latest update (I didn't update)
About standby drain: When I was on 1 June update, only 4% gone whole night (11pm~7am) but I can't say anything about the other updates.
I will test sot and standby drain when I update.
Oh btw I want to write today's sot:
Last full (and last) charge: 16hrs 45 mins ago
Sot: 6 hrs 46 mins
5% left
Edit: I didn't see that my battery is 4% on screenshot. I'm sorry
Edit 2: I updated and not changed much. I got 7h25min max (used till 2%). I still couldn't test standby drain but if you want to know something, I can share my latest battery stats. 5h4min sot 15h23min total (so about 10 hrs idle) and 29% left. I guess I will get 2 more hours sot. According to me standby drain is good enough.

Looks decent. Could've been better, but I guess it's because of that IPS screen. Wish the battery could've been a bit bigger than the standard Zenfone 5.
I'm getting around 5:30 hours (on a Zenfone 5, not 5z), how do you manage to get 7:25?
UPDATE:
6:25 of mostly youtube and chrome browsing, bluetooth is always on paired to my smartwatch, as well as wifi and 4G.
(Zenfone 5 SD636). Overall im happy with that, think i can squeeze even more, i have APKpure taking 5% for some unknown reason.

Actually the other day i was doing 6:25 SOT, which I'm quite happy with. 4G and WIFI are on all the time, and my phone is constantly connected by BT to my Amazfit Bip watch.
location is also always on, and I'm on the latest firmware (.19).
I am deeply impressed by the battery life of this phone. In first recharge I got close to 7h 43 min SOT, later in second recharge it went up to 8'36". Both cycles took considerable usage of roaming, bluetooth on for at least 4-5 hours, some streaming over bluetooth, wifi was used partially maybe not more than a couple of hours, google maps was used and finally the second recharge includes live streaming WC Final Match too. Both SIMs were occupied with primary on VoLTE and always data on.
Brightness was kept on comfortable 30-40% level except for while watching match, when it was close to 55%.

Check if your area has constantly signal fluctuation. I remember my friend constantly had signals switching between 3G & 4G on his 3T and his battery drain was worse, but only at his home. Otherwise it was good.
If signal strength is good, it might be something else.

Thanks. Last night I kept it in 2G after taking care of above steps and lost 3% in 7 hrs, which is reasonable. However, on 4G still losing around 7-8%. Not sure if AI is consuming battery.

Hope it gets improved in pue update
Initially got 3h43m sot with dual sim in 4G. Switched it to 2G/3G mode and sot increased to 5h45. So guess it was the constant fluctuations from 4G to 3G that was causing the low sot. But the last update a few weeks back and my sot has dropped to 5h, no change in my daily usage. Still in 2G/3G mode. Don’t know why the loss in almost an hour of sot
Hoping for good optimizations on pie.

30% Wifi 70% LTE
Location when needed bluetooth off. AOD on pickup and new notifications only.
I am pretty consistently getting to 20% battery with 4 hours of screen time regardless of my usage. I'm mostly on wifi, probably 90% of the time.

The Pixel 3 has a 13% larger screen and 13% more pixels than the Pixel 2 with only an 8% bigger battery. Getting less battery life isn't a surprise at all.
What is a surprise is your claim that the Pixel 2 got 6 hours. With a 5" 1080p screen and only a 2700mAh battery I have a hard time believing anything more than about 4.5 hours.
Mix of Wi-Fi and walking around on LTE for a few hours outside
Its kinda bad. My brother cant get over 5 hours sot and the standby drain is really high. If he keeps it idle it drains alot.
I've had my Pixel 3 XL for roughly 7 days now and SOT have been consistent around 4:30 - 5:15 hrs going from 95 - 20 percent discharges before I recharge.
Not bad, but I have to admit that I was expecting something better like easily reaching 6+ hrs for normal usage.
My last hope is that boy "Adaptive Battery" if it would help after couple of weeks at learning curve.

Try turning off the Always ON display. It drains the battery a lot. Initially i was getting 5 hrs max on wifi. Now its a little stable and i am able to clock around 8hrs SOT with average use. On LTE, it will drop drastically to 5hrs maybe.

I've have pretty bad result being pretty much 95% on wifi with low app usage
I'm seeing mixed results with SoT on two separate Pixel 3s. On my SO's Pixel 3 its getting 8 hours while mine is only getting closer to 3-4 hrs and she is a heavier user than me usually. Seems to me that the information the adaptive battery has on usage matter a great deal on your battery life. I opted to start fresh on my Pixel 3 while she opted to transfer from an older Pixel.
Getting consistent 6-7 hours of SoT without ambient display, half WiFi, half data and some Bluetooth usage. Using amoled black or dark mode with many apps and an amoled themed wallpaper. This is at 90% brightness. Quite impressed.
getting 5/6h SOT
Screen brightness at about 75%, and nightmode at the end of the day.
Mix of WIFI/ LTE during day and Bluetooth in the car obviously.
So far impressed since the size of the battery is small compared to other devices.
My HTC u11+ was getting about 6h SOT with a much much larger battery capacity.
I'll be the first to admit I dont have much running in the background right now, but I'm still pleased. In case the links don't work -- 6 h 30 m screen on time. Phone charged 20 hours ago. (I'm not usually that heavy of a user, just wanted to see how it would fare in the real world. ) Mix of WiFi, LTE, bluetooth on about half the time.
How?
Use battery saving mode on time. I'm getting similar results. I accidently plugged in the charger at the last bit (thought I took the screenshot but I didn't) but you can see it only charged about 2%.

You're using ambient display, turn it off for a day which should resolve all your issues. Yes it means you'll have to wake up the phone in order to see whatever messages you may or may not have received. But it'll extend the battery time.

If you opted to start from scratch when you set up your Pixel 3 and did not transfer the data from a device that already has the adaptive battery feature getting about 1 hour of SoT seems to be normal based on my experience. I haven't been able to confirm this, but based on my experience the adaptive battery feature seems to use machine learning. It learns what apps you use over time and how often you use them. The more data it has, the better the battery life you will get. It took about 3 weeks for my battery to settle down. Currently, my battery is estimated to last about 17 hours from a full charge. My suspicion is that the Pixel 3 start out running everything you install and slowly learns how aggressive it should limit the battery usage of an app. Aside from leaving it on battery saver, I would also recommend not charging it overnight a couple of days and letting it sit there. That seems to have helped me with the battery life and my device knowing to limit apps I don't use frequently.

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Google Pixel 5's battery drains under standby conditions. I can also confirm that the battery life/standby drain is absolutely amazing.
Just today gsmarena also posted its battery stats on pixel 5, which got Endurance rating of 93h, which according to my own experience and usage pattern means its helluvah performer battery wise! Anything over 80h is good!

I thought i would just leave it to see what would happen overnight again, so i am still on the same charge as the first screen shot but i have 3 hours SOT time now.
The stand by drain isn't quite as good as I expected. I'm losing about 1/3% per hour. When my Pixel 2 XL was brand new it also drained about 1/3% per hour on stand by and that was with a smaller battery and less power efficient processor. I'm certinaly not complaining, 1/3% per hour is great. Just a little surprised that it's a tiny bit worse than my Pixel 2 XL.
Mine definitely seems worse than my 2XL - that would maybe lose 5-10% overnight, while the 5 seems more like 20% at the moment, even after 2 weeks for it to settle down.
Just loosing 1-3% over the complete night here. Maybe have a look into your battery statistics to find out whats causing this drain on your devices?
This is mine overnight again.

Reboot your device and check again.,is a known bug also on 4xl ....

From 44 to 28% in 7 hours. With AOD. It seems like AOD never sleeps. It's avout 2%/h.
Can anyone with AOD report his own "score".

Well if it ia bug i am delighted with it, i am getting all but 2 days battery life with 5 hours SOT. (FWIW it rebooted last night after installing the November patch and the standby drain overnight was just the same)

Same here. First night stayed at 100% as well, then next day synced everything and lost 2%, last night with flip to shh on I lost 1% over close to 8 hours. First Pixel where I'm not hunting for a plug out during the day. I have exercise tracking software I use pretty much daily so SOT doesn't really pertain when it's activity tracking with screen off. But still getting around 5 hours taken into account.
Just to add my battery indicator drops how i would expect it to with usage, i am not seeing this stuck bug thing people are seeing.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. I haven't used AOD on my Pixel 5 but I remember testing it on my Pixel 2 XL when it was new and stand by tripled from 1/3% per hour to about 1% per hour. So yeah 2% does seem really bad.
The screenshot speaks for itself.

What the hell?!?! What kind of magic is that? With just over 4 hours screen on time the best I could do is maybe 2 days. You got 6?!?! What's your secret?
Im note sure mate... I even use dual sim!
Next run, even better...

fantastic result. How is Spotify using little energy there? for me it consumes the battery a lot.
In addition, the standby time is very poor. Not using the phone at all, maybe he could handle it Three days. And so it barely lasts 2 days out of 3h SOT if I'm lucky. Of course, I can achieve 8-10h SOT in one time but the standby kills the batteries in the long run.
Hi all, just wanted to report my less than ideal standby drain.
My Pixel 2 XL used to behave better as someone previously commented - I can 100% confirm this.
My P5 would usually use around 0.8/1.1%/h with hibernation time of roughly 80/90% during screen off (AccuBattery stats).
The average values might be skewed a bit since during the day I often listen to Spotify via my TWS buds, but at night the graph doesn't lie: it's quite visible that something's going on, as per screenshots.
Unfortunately I took them after this morning's quick refill, but you can still see clearly that when I put it on my night stand it was at ~50% and I woke up in the high 30s...
The line is not even close to being flat.
Where has all the nice work around doze gone?
Also, why is it so hard for Google to let us know precisely what is using all that energy?
Any tips?
I'm not rooted, no AOD and all my sensors are on - I don't want to babysit my battery.
With this setup I was getting better standby efficiency with my 2XL, I'm sure.
I've already reported this to Google with logs, hopefully some upcoming monthly patch will include some standby optimization
