S8 Active SM G892U, was Sprint, unlocked and on T-Mobile. Sprint Update broke Volte - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discuss

Hi,
I have a Samsung S8 Active G892U which I bought used as an unlocked phone. It's clear it was originally a Sprint phone, but I have been using it with no problems on T-Mobile USA. It was running firmware G892USQS3BRI1 until today
Today I was prompted to install the latest software update ( G892USQS3BSA1 - this was clearly a Sprint update; it appears my phone is still getting Sprint updates, which makes sense, as it has Sprint firmware).
There was a warning on the Software update screen that the update would stop Volte working, and I would therefore no longer be able to access data while in a phone call. I (foolishly!!) assumed this would not affect me as I was on T-Mobile. I regularly use data while on the phone, so I know there was no issue with this previously.
The upgrade has completed, and I can no use data while making a call (I am in a LTE area at the moment). There is no sign of any option to enable or disable Volte anywhere in the settings menus
I did try going into Settings->Connections->Mobile Networks and changing Network Mode from "Automatic" to "LTE/CMDA." (as various forums indicated that doing that would provide a menu where I could re-enable volte)
This made the situation worse - I could no longer make calls. I have changed back to 'Automatic' , and can make calls again, but still loose data connectivity when making a call.
Is there any way I can restore my previous ability to use data while calling?
I am wondering:
a) If there is a way to renable Volte without reflashing the phone (that would be preferred)
b) If I do flash the phone, what would be the best firmware to go to - Sprint (presumably the previous version), T-Mobile or something custom (I'm clearly concerned about bricking the phone here)
c) It's several years since I've found myself re-flashing a phone - I see lots of references to "Odin" as the tool to use - is that correct, and could someone point me to the best guide on using it?
Thanks in advance..

You can flash the Sprint latest firmware over the current firmware and I think that should do the trick because I did it and so far so good but proceed with caution I have no experience in dirty flashing but as long as you just stick to the AP file and don't load the bootloader etc I think you should be safe from bricking because as far as I know when the boot loader is gone you can't repair anything

Flashed Verizon RUU, cellular radios, GPS, and camera now broken

Hey all,
So, a little backstory: I got this HTC 10 from Sprint not too long ago, and little did I know that I would be stuck with Sprint unless I reflash the phone firmware. (after research, asking HTC and Sprint, I received misinformation from reps stating that the phone would work on Verizon with just a carrier unlock issued over the air). Moral of the story: don't rely on customer service :silly:.
Fast forward to now, and I have rooted (temporarily to run Sunshine), S-OFF'd (using Sunshine), changed the CID (for Verizon), and flashed the newest Verizon RUU that developer Dottat kindly posted here.
That worked, full LTE, but then whenever the camera or GPS were accessed by any application, the phone would freeze with a black screen (though it seemed something was still running in the background, as notification sounds would still play, and I could exit by pressing the home button and waiting about a minute). After this, I tried flashing the Viper ROM just for kicks, but then the cellular radios only functioned with 3G coverage (no LTE in a coverage area), and GPS was still broken (the camera issue was fixed with this flash for some reason).
Unfortunately (or maybe not), I am pretty sure /system has been wiped multiple times. I also ran
Code:
htc_fastboot erase modemst1
htc_fastboot erase modemst2
after each install of a new ROM, then performed a factory reset from recovery (just a factory reset, nothing more).
Now I went ahead and used an official ROM from HTC's website in an attempt just to get full functionality working on any carrier. I flashed the USA unlocked variant (and changed the CID to BS_US001. MID is still 2PS650000), but now I am experiencing more missing functionality. The camera and GPS are still missing, and now the SIM card is not detected (when entering the access point names dialog, a message pops up stating that there is no SIM, or SIM error when I am using an activated AT&T SIM). When I enter the test menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and select any option for network mode other than what is default (LTE/CDMA), the new option won't 'stick' (it returns to default after a few seconds).
This sounds to me like there is stale firmware on the device from a previous flash, or that the firmware for these core peripherals is corrupt. Is there a way I can get these devices working again? Or am I now stuck with a bricked device ? I do still have a backup I took of what was installed stock by Sprint (all except for /data...but I don't need that partition, right?)
EDIT: Mods, I am terribly sorry! I meant to post this in HTC 10 Q&A. I don't see a way to delete a thread, so hopefully we can move it.

A MOD should move it soon.
I am not the best here, but hopefully can be of some help.
I would just superCID, save a step for flashing RUU's.
So, when you flash the Verizon RUU, does camera work?
(if you RUU and only have 3g, wipe the modems to get 4g back)
If your trying to use the phone on Verizon I would do the following:
1) Change your CID to Super, 11111111
2) Flash the US Unlocked RUU, http://www.htc.com/us/support/rom-downloads.html#unlocked
3) After it fully boots, reboot into the bootloader & flash the Verizon radio, http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/how-to/vzw-how-to-unlocked-model-vzw-t3376743
4) Make sure the Preferred Network is set to Global, Settings>Mobile data>Preferred Network
5) Get to the secret menu *#*#4636#*#*, and set the preferred network type to "CDMA/EvDO/GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto"
I use a Verizon model with the US Unlocked firmware. As far as custom ROMs, some work with Verizon's network and some don't. I'm sure theres a workaround but I've stuck with the US Unlocked firmware, and just use Xposed for any tweaks/mods.
If your trying to use it on AT&T and the radio from the US unlocked RUU should work.

How to backup phone to flash new firmware?

So, I was fed up with the fact that I couldn't use 4G band 20 on my sim free purchased galaxy s8 in the UK as my signal is poor in my local area and without that, would leave me without any signal at home so I successfully managed to flash the Three software and then it was easy enough to enable it - still no VOLTE option of course!
However my GPS doesn't seem to be accurate, feeezes and when I went on holiday to the USA air wouldn't let me manually select my network, but my wife's phone that is on the standard firmware allowed manual network selection. I didn't have these issues when I was last in the USA In September
As I say, I mainly changed so I could somehow enable Band Wp 4G, however I've now managed to do that on my wife's phone without flashing new firmware, so I'd like to revert back to standard unbranded firmware.
When I changed to three software, I ran google backup, Samsung backup and used Samsung smart switch backup as well and it didn't seem to back everything up at all. I had to resign in two absolutely everything, redownload items, lost my reminders, lost my notes. Is there a way to do a complete full backup and restore so I can go to unbranded firmware?
Thank you
Any ideas please?

Not unless you're rooted. You can try helium but again no guarantee.

S8 Active (G892U) - Help Flashing from Sprint to T-Mobile (bootloader v3)

Hoping to get some assistance or maybe even just clarification on this topic...
So, I purchased an unlocked S8 Active with the Sprint branding for use on T-Mobile network. After updating the proper APN settings, I was up and running fine, but wanted to get Wi-Fi calling back, so I flashed over to the latest T-Mobile firmware available at Sammobile - G892USQS3BRG5. Ok, before you say anything, yes, it was stupid to flash a brand new v3 bootloader, but it's done so no going back (to my knowledge). Anyways, flash went fine on Odin 13.3.1, but upon reboot there is the Sprint splashscreen. It even tried to constantly verify the SIM card with the Sprint OMADM app, which I have since uninstalled through adb.
Any chance anyone can provide any insight into this (admittedly minor) issue? I don't really have any major issues other than the aforementioned Wi-Fi calling is gone, and I have to use a third party messaging app due to MMS not playing nicely with the Samsung version. Any help on this would be great, and maybe we can stir up some discussion to help prevent someone else from making the same mistake.
I'm curious where you got the ODIN you used.
I have an S8 Active, but an AT&T version, and need to do the same thing - I want to flash G892USQS3BRG5 onto it for the same reason - WiFi Calling won't work AND I cannot get cell calls when my WiFi is on which has resulted in me missing important calls.
When I tried to flash I got a PIT error using what I think was the same version of Odin (patched).
I'm pretty new at this reflashing stuff so perhaps I did something stupid?
Thanks

G900T

Hello,
I have purchased a refurbished and unlocked 900t to use in New Zealand and having some following issuses,
Only operates on 4g and wont change to other data,
Hotspot wont turn on,
There is no Emergancy alarts.
Running on the telecom network.
Do I need to flash In a 900i rom with 900t bootloader
Or are There other fixes I can do
nope all over that, and if i wasn't bored, i wouldn't bother to read the hover text and try to help.
step one: fix your title. when asking for help, use a descriptive title like at least "SM-G900T issues with NZ carrier-name-here"
step two through more: easiest steps are make sure
* your sm-g900t has the final official firmware update from t-mobile.
* you have the current APN settings for your carrier entered in that device.
* verify general usability on your carrier network (what bands do they use?).
if that works okay, then install LOS 15.1 for a more up to date experience. although i noticed an odd behavior in LOS on that device lately around hotspot only being available to turn on when not in airplane mode (unlike wifi and bluetooth which turn on just fine from airplane mode).
if the device does not work after following the easy steps, then only the more involved ones are left with installing leaked tools to unlock LTE bands and are a bit tricky to "calculate" safely. for me it only worked with stock rom and failed to work with open source tool, so had to use leaked tool, similar to situation with heimdall never worked for me and leaked odin always does.
hope that helps, and remember that google is your big brother friend, so try duckduckgo instead.

phone says there's LTE service, but disconnects when making a call and cannot receive/send texts

I installed the latest lineageOS 19 version, rooted my phone then ran into this problem where the phone says i have service, but when i place a call it wont fully make the call. Then my mobile data will X out and i get pop up error saying mobile service is unavailable. I then tried lineageOS 18.1 and arrowOS and same problem persists.
formating between installs obviously.
I have looked at every option on this phone and tried combinations and everything in the network/system/ everything and still not working.
The process was actually very simple since i have some programming experience. Other sources mention possible baseband issues? On the fastboot screen it shows a baseband version. all the information there appears normal. I only flashed the boot image one time to root and didn't mess with any other manual flashing processes. Just used twrp. I didn't quite understand twrp at first and therefore didn't get a backup using it... iused adb to make a backup which apparently didn't work so Im lost and hope someone could help me out here. please and thank you!
If i may add I can use mobile data just fine, i can browse the internet and such (with wifi off and data on only) so i really dont understand. Is this a normal issue to have when using custom roms? did I trip some security that blocked me now? any input???
I wonder, though, this moto g7 is an A/B partition thing. so if i understand correctly, flashing twrp would not work and thus why i did not do that. it makes sense. But should i try flashing it, booting into it then installing lineage? even if i did i feel like that would give me same issue considering the method i followed got me into lineageos, plus root checker said i was rooted.
What I can tell you is what I had to do in order to get LTE (voice calls) running on my G7 - I was forced to switch over to LTE because AT&T turned off 3G here in the US and 4G without LTE is not good enough for voice calls:
Get the latest stock firmware and install it using e.g. Lenovo's "Rescue And Smart Assistant". That will get Motorola's Android 10 on the phone.
After installation, go through setup and actually make a call (calling your mailbox is fine). Then check your ims status (*#*#4636#*#*, goto phone info, pull ims status) to see that ims is actually working.
Shutdown the phone and start installing LOS (use the partition copy script too to make sure that the partitions not touched by LOS installation are updated "on the other flash bank").
Go through LOS setup, select a valid APN for your setup, set "LTE only" or "LTE / WCDMA" for the network and make a call. You should be good to go.
Again this is what I had to do to get LTE working with AT&T USA. YMMW.
Markus.
I know this is way late, and you probably already figured it out. I didn't share the no text problem. The Problem isn't just the "LTE" setting itself. There is one more option(some Roms show it, some don't) I believe its in the phone app settings? VOLTE must be checked. I have noticed Some Roms do have this option and some don't. when volte is checked, it'll keep your data/internet on during a call, some Roms that option won't show up or isn't available. I haven't used G7 in a while, but I do remember the problem and how to fix (on my phone anyway).
