Been Away for a While, n00b Question? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been out of this for a bit, but considering a 3 pack of Fire 10 HDs that's on sale right now. From what I can make out, they are not rooted yet.
Is this correct?
Thanks!

Thanks for all the help!

Just got a Fire TV today, rooted and running like a champ!

Hello!
Bought a Fire TV from Best Buy today on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised to discover it came with version 51.1.1.0_user_511069920 installed, so I was able to downgrade and root!
I did my research and was pretty sure it would have come with something newer, I guess these guys don't move very fast at Best Buy, lol.
This thing blows my AppleTV 2 out of the water in terms of performance, specifically XBMC. :good:
Very happy and pleased to be a part of the community!

Hey congrats. i just did the same as well. I bought 2 from staples. I have been playing toy all day and it is running like a champion! my firmware was the same as yours
I rooted/disabled updates/kodi/some apps/
I am honestly shocked these "old" devices are still just sitting on the shelves!
I have two rooted Amazon fires and I just picked up a new rootable Fire at BB and after blocking the three recommended websites on AFTV news via OpenDNS, I'm stuck at the "Unable to update your Amazon fire TV" page. Did you guys block all three websites?

Do this. When you reboot and ensure your not doing wireless. ensure you remove the ssid if you have connected to it and use ethernet. When it starts to show checking for updates, remove the ethernet and it will ask you to login without the update. Then root/downgrade/upgrade/upgrade to rbox.
As for being available. All bestbuys in the area of LA have the firetv's sold out. I need to make one more for a friend.
Thank you for the fast reply. I am running the set up through ethernet and I have the three websites blocked and I've tried pulling the Ethernet and leaving it with the exact same results every time. Has never connected to a Wi-Fi. According to the serial number this is a version 2 if that helps. It try's to connect to update and ends up on the final page telling me unable to update your Amazon fire TV.
---------- Post added at 10:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:36 PM ----------
I left it on the unable to update your Amazon fire TV page overnight hoping it would timeout and take me to the account page but of course that didn't happen.

I'm surprised how AFTV hasn't taken a note of this. I suggest return the serial version 2 and find one with Serial 3. For example 70900305 or 303 and so on. You can pick up those serials from bestbuy. You will not be able to get past the update in series 2. I've tried about 5 of the series 2 this last weekend and couldn't get through the forced update.
Another thing to note and change from earlier that the Series 2 will force update to the latest firmware and not the one version up which was the case earlier.
Bad news but at least now you know. Return it and find yourself a serial 3. Best buy in woodland hills, ca had about 10 pieces last week and they are all sold out. Try to find one from best buy in your area. they have the correct ones lying around. where are you located. do you want help doing it?
Thank you so much for answering me. I didn't come here blind asking you these questions, I have read somewhere about the versions causing issues so for you to confirm that for me is much appreciated. I have four of them that are version two and one of them I tried OpenDNS for the first time and didn't do it correctly so it upgraded to an unrootable version. I've corrected that but now I was being over cautious with the remaining 3 fires I have. This sucks.
You guys are so lucky still been able to pick up rootable AFTVs.
No wonder people are selling them on eBay for £100+

Don't get disappointed. If they are returnable, then return them. There are lots that are still rootable at bestbuy. A friend wants one so he is buying a few from all over. I'll revert back with the findings. If I find the rootable versions, I can buy them and sell them straight through if you guys like.

Can you also elaborate what serial numbers are you picking up. Is it the 2 series or the 3. IMO 2 are no longer rootable and you cannot get around the forced update.

the decoder is flawed. If you get the series 2, you cannot get past the forced update by pulling out the ethernet. With series 3 you can. Hence asked what serials are you referring to.

Your not lisiening.
I use the decoder on all 3 boxes and it was correct. It allowed me to root and I have my box now. The other 2 boxes serial numbers were closely simliar, and on top of that I took the fire tv out the box just to check the serial numberand it had the same firmware as the first tv i rooted
All 3 boxes were rootable> i bought these boxes 2 days ago, and i kept 1 box that is rooted and returned the other 2,I never knew they were in high demand so im going to go back to the store i rerturned them too and buy them again and resell them!
They must have been series 3 since I could root by pulling out the ethernet cord
I rooted by pulling out the ethernet cord and it worked right away!
Hope i explained well! Why do you ask? Do you want them?
Update; Just checked the serial numbers and i called the store to check the serial number son the other 2 they all start with 709003 which indicates series 3

I understood what you said in the first place. Anyways we are talking the same thing. Yours must be series 3 as the decoder says series 3 is rootable. the flaw in the decoder is that it shows series 2 as rootable which is incorrect. AFTVnews should correct that as it misleads people.

Anxiously awaiting ability to root HDX!

Having received this Amazon Fire HDX (EDIT: HD 10) (5th Gen) as a gift, I was excited. But now seeing what Amazon did to android, it's horrid. I am eagerly waiting for news of rooting this to turn it into a pure android device.
If you were to visit my office, this HDX is currently being used as a doorstop, HA!

Yes, indeed. The box says it is an HDX; however, the Device Options clearly indicate "Fire HD 10 (5th Generation)." - my bad.

That doesn't seem to work on the hd8 at least, as hobbit19 posted in the dev thread. I get the same "FAILED (remote: unknown command)" error when attempting to run the fastboot oem command to unlock the kernel.

Rooting the Kindle Fire 7(7th Generation)

Over the past two days I have been searching and scavenging unrelentlessly for a solution to my problem. Someone got me a kindle fire 7(7th Gen) for christmas and I decided I wanted it running stock android. It came with FireOS 5.6.0.0 and recently updated to 5.6.1.0, last night I was working on it before it updated and I couldn't seem to root it. The root wouldn't go through or it'd fail right at the beginning. After updating to 5.6.1.0 I came very close to rooting and I think it is a solution in the future.

Man that would be great, I hope someone can break Fire OS 5.6.1.0, I would love to run the newest android OS on this Tablet. Would make a great OBDII diagnostic Tool for working on cars. :highfive:
5.6.1.0 can be rooted on the HD 10. I'm told it's rooted with dirty cow via KingoRoot. If the new fire 7s have the same kernel, there might be a possibility. As of now, it appears the HD 10 2017 had an unpatched kernel that allowed for the root. it's something Amazon has yet to fix.
When will we have root?
I have three of these and need root access for them to be worth a damn!!!!
Hello,
I also have a new fire HD7 (7th Gen) with 5.6.1.0.
It is for a kid, so I would like to root it to get amazon stuff away and install Google ones.
Is it still unrootable?
Thanks.

Currently the only rootable Amazon tablet is the HD 10.
Sent from my Amazon KFSUWI using XDA Labs
Looking forward to a root install on mine keep on rooting.
for a 69$ cost, it would be worth it if i could root and get it to do the things from google play that the fire store doesnt have. Tried two 10ionch ones and i had less than desirable results
How likely it is that this device will be rooted in the future? Look like there is no development for this product.
I’m considering to get one for my kids, but without root I prefere to select another device...
Noticed a few people say they want the root so they can install Google Play store, you can without root on the current Fire 7. Just did, you need to install the framework, account manager app, play services and then play store apk. Working, but quite slow, just got the Fire 7 so may be doing a few bits in the background updating so maybe causing the slowness.. or its just been a long time since i used a £30 tablet.. haha.
+1 above. One of the first things I did was put the Play Store on it. It would be useless to me without it.
The reason I want to root it is to see if it can be any faster with stock android. As it stands it is very slow for almost everything.
Should we stop getting updates at 5.6.1? Is that even possible?

Really hoping you're able to root it.
Just got mine in the mail. Should've researched it a bit more before purchasing but it was only $17 so I jumped on it.
It is extremely slow for a quad core, 720P device with 2GB RAM. I expected it to be much quicker. Does Amazon put that much bloatware or is there another reason it is so slow?

Nearly every amazon app will consume resources. Many will reactivate after a force close. A lot of it is because of the apps.
Ok, thanks for pointing that out. I will probably try that Kindle tool or fire tablet tool, whatever it's called to cancel OTA and remove some Amazon apps.
I've removed most of the stuff etc, but now I got a competely unusable tablet. Tasker etc works, but the lockscreen cant be removed. For motion detection quite bad. Rooting it also doesn't work, but that's nothing new. Should I sell it and buy a 10, should I update it? I was on 5.6.0.0 now I downgraded to 5.4.0.0

If you screwed up, just so a factory reset. Without root a thing you disabled or 'uninstalled ' will come back to life and you can start over. I love my HD 10 but hate it too. Finding it difficult to get a rom to flash. Woo i guess it all boils down to what you want your tablet to do. If you have a fire 7, you will be very United due to memory and what not. HD 10 is so far excellent with memory when debloated.

I want to use it just for a home automation dashboard. Just bought it cause it's been 30€, so I thought it could be a good tab for the wall. With unusable, I mean I can't put it on the wall, because the lockscreen is still there. It would be kinda useless to have motion detection with a lockscreen. And rooting doesn't work, or is there a new exploit? I would really love to root it, then I can finally use it. It's just lying around right now, until it can be rooted. I've removed the OTA update thingies, so no updates will be downloaded. Also it's shut down, so no problem there. I'm on 5.4.0.0 like said, if I have to upgrade to root, I'll do that, but for now, I try to stay on the lowest version possible, so when an exploit comes, I'm prepared
I hate this tablet there needs to be a root. it runs incredibly slow and I think it's because Amazon's apps are running please find a root solution

TWRP/Root for Walmart ONN Gen 3 8 inch? 100071483

Good Day Code Ninjas,
Has anyone figured out or began (and needs any assistance) attempting to root the Gen 3 Walmart ONN tabs? Specifically in my case the 8 inch with model # 100071483? I have that one as well as a 100011885 ONN 8 inch (currently stuck with the orange state boot screen that it wont go past...) I use Linux specifically Ubuntu 22.10, ParrotOS 5.1 and Linux Mint 21 but I also have access to Windows 11. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am willing to help in any way I can though my knowledge and experience is no where near the caliber of that of anyone on here. Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help me with installing a stock ROM on my son's Onn 100071483 8"? He factory reset it, it's now FRP locked and he can't remember the 4 digit pin or Google account. I can access the ADB and fastboot and have had success with some of my tablets in the past but my first problem is finding the stock android 11 go ROM that this this was running. The second problem is that I am not aware of the exact steps but I know I need to run some commands though command prompt or the power shell? Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I dont think you can flash it if you do even with root it will just reboot and fail to boot because of verity
Did anyone find a way to root this model?
