Color saturation & accuracy - LG G8 Real Life Review

Seems pretty spot on to me. Not as good a iPhones or Samsungs here though.

I haven't spent too much time with newer phones, but this screen is, in all ways, better than my S8, especially with color accuracy. This is compared to an editing monitor using tested and certified color settings.
Saturation on this phone feels more natural overall. It's not trying to always wow you with overblown vibrancy, unless you actually choose to set it that way, which is possible in settings.
This screen leans a tiny bit towards the greens at times, but it really depends on the image. Whites are solid, unlike my S8.
Color shift is excellent compared to the S8, I'm sure most newer amoled's can say that.
Overall a great screen, let's hope it can resist burn-in!

Hi guys
Some reviews have stated that the display is pretty inaccurate, is that what you guys see?

Mine is very accurate, moreso than my S8, whose screen recieved amazing reviews across the board. After reading customer reports, I've come to believe the S8 screens had consistency problems in manufacturing, and some screens looked much worse than others. Considering my G8 screen looks awesome, but some others say otherwise, I wonder if LG has similar inconsistencies?
It could also be perception. For years now, I've been using monitors that are proven accurate, and have always found Samsung/Apple phone color profiles to alter saturation and tone toward a pleasant 'wow' instead of actual, measurable color accuracy.
Plus, I've read somewhere that LG and Samsung are both suppliers for Apple phone displays. Keeping that in mind, I'm willing to bet that the differences we see now are more due to tuning than panel manufacturer, and we're now dealing with critiques based on personal preference, much like headphones. Just speculation, but it certainly seemed that way as I sampled different phones in the stores.

Tv

I've got the phone now and from my point the view it seems perfectly fine for my eyes.

Terrible accuracy especially when compared to my v20. Gamma levels are fuuuuuuuuuuucked on this display

I have two lg g8 and one shows no problems but the other shows yellow shades around the edges. It has happened to me with previous LG like LG V40, LG V50.

Low Saturation and Contrast?

Bought the 10...love the way it runs but I bought it to show my photography work on (would use an ipad but I really detest the ios software).
The entire screen seems to be washed out overall with weak black levels and reds in particular are low saturation.
Sharp as a tack for sure....is it just mine? I see such conflicting reports in reviews although I am seeing more now about low saturation and contrast.
Very frustrating....unless someone out there knows some way of calibrating this display which I haven't found?
you are right
i am also a photographer (Canon 5D MkII)
i have watched some photos now(got my N10 yesterday) and as you said the screen is sharp as hell
i have never seen this amount of details with my DSLR photos.
im also doing hardware calibration and i see whats wrong right away and i have also tested it...the problem is that the gamma is to low.
The N10 has a Gamma Level around 1.4 - 1.5 where it should be 2.2!
(yeah that should make some attention hehe)
thats a fact and thats why we have washed out colors and bad contrast
but the good thing is that even at that low gamma we have a decent picture quality with good black levels!
i dont think the black levels on my device is washed out
it shouldnt be this good with this crappy gamma but it is
thats amazing and that tells that this is a quality screen above normal.
with correct gamma at 2.2 this screen will rock for sure.
so lets wait for some kernel guru to make some gamma adjustments
i have said i before that im willing to pay that person that makes gamma adjustment possible for the N10s.
You are correct...gamma is definitely too low.
As far as washed out reds go, I suppose I could process specifically for display on this tablet but that's a pain in the butt.
I wish the darned ipad wasn't such a restrictive ecosystem for the software. The colors rock on the ipad unfortunately but it's just too darned restrictive.

im waiting for a i1 Display Pro colormeter
when i get it i will do a hardware calibration.
but i have checked some stuff already and i think that the colors is right for its low gamma.
also the brightness for the colors seems the same for Red/Green/Blue and thats a good thing
also the contrast and black level is reference.
i also think the color temp is close to 6500k
that means that the grayscale is correct.
so the only thing that messes up this display is the low gamma.
(or wrong gamma curve/line)
you have some tests here that you can do without a colormeter,if you want to check it out
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/
also you can download the AVSHD 709 Patterns here.
http://www.avsforum.com/t/948496/avs-hd-709-blu-ray-mp4-calibration
just copy the mp4 files to your N10 and run them.
one note that i can see is that it seems that the gamma is higher at the lower shades
it seems to be around 1.8 there
that could explain why we dont have completely washed out blacks.
but what you want is a plain straight gamma line at 2.2
the N10 seems to have a hill shaped line starting high at lower shades and lower around maximum white.
I have tested the N10 with a Pantone "hocky puck" and can confirm the observations posted above. As compared to overly saturated profiles most normal users are used to, it's no wonder many see the N10 as flat and dull. My N7 is horrible, not only flat but had a color temp that was blueish green.
Much of my publicly displayed work for general web based consumption, has the saturation pumped up farther then I like, but my "fans" (sarc) seem to enjoy my photographs when contrast and saturation is pushed high. Ironically, my over saturated photographs look good to me on the low gamma N10, lol.
Either way, most all of us would benefit from being able to adjust our N10s. As many of you know this is best done at the kernel level and the master of sound and color Samsung kernels is SuperCurio and his project Voodoo. I have heard hearsay that he is working on kernel code and color profiles that can support adjustments for the N10, but I have yet to confirm this myself.
As usual we are given hardware that needs code improvements to be fully realized and that seems to always be done by the development community. It will taken time but I am confident we'll get there to some degree soon.
As far as I could tell there is no gamma correction in the kernel because the Nexus 10 uses a new display port interface thats in the Exynos 5. Most devices I've seen have at least a static gamma table in the kernel but that doesn't appear to be true for the Nexus 10.

that sounds great
post in this thread if you hear more about it!
as i said in other threads i will pay around 50$ for the person that makes gamma adjustment possible for the N10.

Color saturation & accuracy

I need to say that color accuracy is not good. I had a Nexus 5X and a low cost Lenovo K5 before and both had problems maybe with blue and green but the Nokia 7 Plus has problems with ALL colors and with red. The picture is over saturated overall which makes already rich saturated pictures with people's skin look like ORANGE colored skin! I mean adding saturation to pictures is sometimes okay but not to all pictures especially when skin gets orangish/red!
Everything would not bother me if the Android dev team would allow color correction and/or saturation correction in Android. Instead they refuse to put this kind of fine granular color correction in their base Android and Nokia 7 plus has no option to change this (in my eyes) display error.
I could correct this issue a little (but not good) with the paid app screen balancer but it has many down sites (because it's a layer on top of all apps).
Please Nokia offer us more color correction options. As a photographer I feel a little insulted by oversaturated pictures and no option to change that. Maybe I will return this phone because a little better color accuracy is something I value highly.
Please ignore this message.
I mistook this thread to be the one for camera pictures (accuracy & saturation).
I think rating a camera based on one particular camera app (in above case - Nokia camera app), isn't totally fair.
If you would use Gcam mod, you will notice the difference in saturation & accuracy being delivered much better. Same hardware, different software.
I use the Gcam mod, and so far have observed rightly-saturated pics with a good balance of color temperatures (most of the times).
With Gcam Pixel3 Mod camera, I will easily vote the color saturation and accuracy at 90%.
Cheers,
Sony.

I completely missed that part!
Apologies.
Any idea how I can desaturate the display? I mean, there is an sRGB slider in the dev options, but it doesn't do anything, and resets itself. The display, well is not decently calibrated.

Yes, also noticed this slider. It resets itself all the time and I also don't know if it does something because this reset is near instand.
Theoretical this app could be a good solution when the phone would be rootable (but apparently the bootloader can only be unlocked by paying to some strange guys):
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.xda.sa2ration
Best would be if Nokia itself allows saturation slider in some settings app
The pro version of "screen balancer" in play store could also help but if you exaggerate you loose deep black levels
TL;DR no good solution currently.
Thanks for replying. That is a damn shame. Do we know if that is still not possible in the P Beta? Is there anybody who could test this?
Right now I'm not sure if I'll keep this phone, exactly for that reason, so I'm not really doing the flashing thing yet. Thanks again
Btw, I asked Nokia support about this, they said that currently there is no way, but they passed it on to the dev team, maybe they will include the option at some point.

Yes. It's on by default but the June update probably broke something and that's why Gcam isn't working.

you can use a custom kernel and adjust the colour saturation with FK kernel manager app.
I've chatted with Huawei and they will answer me soon. My wife also uses a P30 Pro and her phone is less red. When using another kernel there will be problems with guarantee? I think root is necessary?
I'm coming from Samsung. Please excuse my silly questions ?
The first picture shows the phone of my wife next to mine. Both P30 Pro. Hers Breathing Crystal, mine aurora.
The second picture shows my phone next to a Galaxy S8.
Same problem. Red color is blind. I had Mate 10Pro and display was better then P30Pro. There are Red color so bad. Red not Red is so dark.
Red not red. Bad color quality.
I have sent mine for repair to ECC. The result: everything is fine. Nothing to repair. And Huawei said that they can do nothing for me. I am very mad...

So what exactly is the issue with your display?? Both displays look great.
And I have taken a closer look on my display. It is absolutely fine - like on your pictures.
But I'm using "Standard" (Normal) colour tone, because "Lively" (Lebhaft) looks unnatural vibrant.
So try this first, use "Normal", NOT "Lebhaft"!
Edit: You mentioned, you're coming from a Samsung device? Yeah, there's your issue XD
Samsung phones are oversaturated (viel zu bunt!)
Edit 2: Did you have "Eye care" (Augen schonen) enabled? It makes white more "yellowish".
I sell P30Pro and bought S10+. Display is better. Color are so nice. Not bad red like on my P30Pro.

I'd rather have accurate colors than saturated ones, so I go Natural.
I read somewhere on here that the "Vivid" and "Natural" settings use the wide colour gamut, but the advance settings do not.
I switched from s10+ and trust me, 7pro display is better, especially when it comes to calibration. P3 doesn't exist on Samsung devices, and white point is never quite right, it's always yellowy.
Is anyone else running into an issue where, after setting their screen to Natural, it slowly creeps toward Vivid over the next 5 minutes? This is annoying when trying to take accurate photos because I have to constantly reset the color by switching away from Natural then back to it. This is on the current system update (10.3.4.GM21AA).
Other than that, it looks pretty good on Natural except for the reds, which could use some desaturation.

Ice Bear has experience this ever since OnePlus pushed out the Android 10 update. The color calibration resets from natural to whatever profile is the one chosen after locking the screen. It will stay that way even after unlocking. If Ice Bear does not change it manually, it will stay that.

The problem I'm having is, even if I change it manually, it will just gradually move toward vivid (even more saturated than that actually) as I use the phone. Nothing else settings-wise touched, it just...shifts. It's really strange.
I'm using the custom setting with a warmer tint and amoled wide-gamet. The vivid mode brightens the darker parts of images which I don't like.
So, how do I actually see the ratings?
I saw them a year ago, but now they seem gone...
On the topic:
I find the display too colorful. Everything is more colorful than in reality, making people more addictive to their phone. Help appreciated on how to change this via software, tried already some night-color apps but none could serve my needs.

Clarity/resolution

The LG V60 ThinQ has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Very clear. The resolution is lower than my V30, I think, but it's not noticeable to me.
I honestly don't notice the lower resolution and because of that always had my previous phones set to 1080p to save battery.
Auto brightness has been a problem though, in low light the screen throttles back to 1% far too aggressively and 1% is too dim even in a pitch black room.
Sent from my LM-V600 using Tapatalk
The larger screen size and lower resolution combine for a noticeably lower DPI count, but I happen to think that higher (than 1080p) resolutions on (relatively) smaller phone displays are mostly a waste of battery life.
YMMV, but in my experience, there comes a point where the human eye can only resolve so much and the bump in the resolution of small screen displays just becomes overkill. I'll take battery life over resolution and even refresh rate any day, though I imagine higher resolution displays with higher refresh rates will only become more efficient over time, and I'll likely change my tune eventually.
I went from the V30+ to the V60 at the beginning of this month, and I feel like the new phone is a substantial upgrade over the older one in just about all categories that matter. And that's even considering that the former was rooted and the latter can't be!
The display is crisp enough, though clearly not cutting edge. Colors look at least as good as those of the V30. Viewing angles are fantastic without any noticeable (to me) color shift. It's probably the best we could have expected knowing that the display is relatively modest compared to this phone's 20202 (and some 2019) peers. And if you're fine with that, this shouldn't stop you from considering the phone. If, however, you DO want higher resolutions and higher refresh rates, you already know this phone's not for you and that you've got multiple options.

I'm seeing very drastic color shift when viewing at about 45°, more noticeable on white screens. It's a greenish yellowish shift.
Otherwise I agree with the rest of your post. 1080p is plenty resolution and I'm fine with 60Hz refresh.

Are there display variances across production runs, or something? Because I can't seem to reproduce this fault.
I'm not TERRIBLY sensitive to such things, but from what you say, it sounds like it should be blatantly obvious to the eyes.
And I don't suffer from any kind of color blindness that could possibly impact me.

Huh. How did you get a plain white background to show up like that? (I suppose I can Google one up).
I'd like to test my phone out and see if I can get similar results.
It's a little hard to see in a YT video, but I definitely noticed SOME shift on your screen that I don't think I've ever seen on mine.
I imagine the effect is even more noticeable in real life, with the phone right in front of you.

It's a photo editing app, but you can start a new image from scratch and select a background color. I set it to pure white, then zoomed in on it to fill the screen. It's definitely easier to see in person. I tried using by wife's Note 9 for the video, but I couldn't select a better refresh rate on it to prevent the banding.

I tried it out, and while I did notice a dimming or darkening of the white background at extreme tilts, I figure that's normal.
Doesn't quite look like what your YT video shows, but I'm not sure if that's down to the difference between watching a YT video of something and watching it yourself directly.
I've had the V30 and now this and I'm as happy with the screen on this one as I was with the V30. I couldn't care about the refresh rate. It's not like I'm watching a 60" screen. Overall it's a very good screen.

I've had higher resolution screens, and I can tell no difference between them and 1080p. Even 720p is hard to notice a difference.
When it comes to refresh rates, most people see a noticeable difference between 60Hz and 90Hz. My last phone was selectable between those two and 120Hz, and I couldn't tell a difference between 90Hz and 120Hz.
I can see the difference in resolution between the V30 and V60, it's just that 1080p on a phone doesn't bother me.
It falls in my "good enough" range. These aren't 55+ inch television displays, after all.
I also can definitely see the difference between a 60 Hz refresh rate vs a 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh display.
my problem is with notifications in the top pull down... its virtually useless in landscape mode...
