Laggy 4k 60fps video recording - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hi there all,
I received my 6T 8/256 last week. I'm still in official ver 0.7. I've checked that all my videos recorded in 4k 60fps are laggy. They skip frames and do not reproduce accordingly. I thought it may be a buffer problem in the phone itself, and moved them to the computer. They are laggy per se, they're recorded with this failures. Let's say they lag every 2 o 3 seconds (only video, not audio), giving the impression of a low quality, under resources smartphone.
Can you double check this? Can anybody confirm this problem is fixed in next updates? Otherwise I will have to switch to 30fps, which is a real pity in the quality standard.
Thx guys.

Does not lag on mine, but I have McLaren edition

Me too
Lags on my OP6 too. Even the 4k30 results are choppy. It's been like this for months now, videos come out like crap all the time.

Video is running fine on my OP6T at 4K60. I also have the 8/256 variant. I am currently on OB17. Maybe update your phone to the latest OOS as I know they made a few camera updates between what you're running and the latest OOS (9.0.17). Or you could download a newer APK for the camera from another source. I believe the newer camera versions from the 7/7 Pro work on the 6T but have issues in some modes (Pro mode, I believe}.

Same. Faulty unit?

Same here. I think this is because of crapy camera app that needs to be rebuilt because it has bad algorithms botch video and photo

I honestly prefer GCam on this device. I haven't noticed any issues with it on the device. Even with recording at the specifications that you noted above. Pictures are also of much better quality.

I use the GCam Tool from the Play Store. I use it mainly to stop the multiple subfolders created when taking portrait photos but it can also be used to flip/mirror the front camera images if the camera app you use doesn't offer the option (some combinations of GCam and Custom ROMs need to have the flip option enabled to correct the images).

I am quite certain GCam doesn't support 4K60 on the OP6T, only 4K30 max. I may be wrong, so apologies if I am.

Hmm...I set the settings and it showed the 60fps icon in the corner so I assumed it was recording at that frame rate.

These are just what I have set with the config file for the beta. Seems to record and playback fine.

Slow camera while recording

I have the XT1640 variant of the G4 Plus. Im noticing a problem in the camera app. It affects every camera app that I tested.
When I try to record a video, the image is very slow and choppy. The video itself looks fine, but while recording the image I see on the phone looks very slow. It distracts me a lot when trying to record anything.
Anyone know why is that and how can I fix it?
Thanks a lot

Im running LineageOS 14.1, unlocked bootloader and Magisk rooted (core only mode).
I've tried using Motorola Stock camera app (flashed) and the default LineageOS camera app. Oh, and I had the same problem when I was using stock ROM.
Sent from my Moto G4 Plus using XDA Labs
I had similar issue with all custom roms. Camera became too laggy while recording videos, works fine in sock naugat.
I tried moto camera, snap camera, Google camera, cameringo. But all failed.
Only Footej seems to work. But it had slow transitions between switching mods.
The only solution I found for this is HTC camera. It works perfect for me.
Check and reply if it works.?
I think it's a design failure (or limitation) of the device, because it happened on every rom that i used. I notice tons of heat when the lag occurs, usually it's noticeable when i record in 1080p quality, by at least 10 minits (if i use the dual led's to record it occurs much sooner).
I do not know if it's the msm_thermal throttling the cpu, or if the eMMc chip gets really hot and cant manage all the data that the camera (actually the cpu) tries to store there.
It's a high-end camera managed by a mid-range CPU, SD617.
Anyway, if you record in 720p quality this issue surely wont exist, in my case, i have not any kind of lag when i record in 720p.

U11 video recording nitpicking

I've been using the Galaxy S8 Plus until I received my solar red U11 yesterday (glad I waited, it's very nice looking). Anyway, I am very impressed with the photo image quality of the phone (it is very comparable to the S8), but I have a few nitpicks about the video recording:
1) No 1080p/60 mode. I really don't understand why it doesn't have a 60fps mode when even phones from 2016 had it? It has 1080p/30 and 1080p/120 (for slow motion), so why no 1080/60? Is it overheating concern?
2) No way to turn of EIS in 1080p video recording mode? While 1080p is very stable due to its combined OIS and EIS, it also crops the view significantly when recording video in this mode (compare it to 4k, which is quite a bit wider but has no EIS). Anyway, the EIS is nice if you want that, but I think there needs to be a toggle or option to turn off EIS and have the wide recording mode in 1080p that is like the 4k mode. As it stands, there does not appear to be a way to change this.
3) 6 minute recording limit in 4k. I guess it's also due to overheating concerns, but why not just make it unlimited and have the phone's temperature monitoring stop recording automatically if it gets to a certain temp? Some people are reporting overheating stoppages even before the 6 minutes, but in cooler environments, we may be able to record indefinitely in 4k.
Things I DO like about the U11's camera though...
1) Photo app and quality are excellent. Nice Pro mode too.
2) Glad I can lock exposure and focus during video recording very easily.
3) Focusing pulling with the touch screen is very nice on the U11 (it doesn't rock back and forth when focusing like many other phone cameras).
4) Audio recording options are very nice (3d audio vs hi-res, and acoustic focus)

Thanks! It's good to see that they are working on adding 1080p/60, though it appears to be a ways off.
Another thing that bothers me (when compared to the S8 or iPhone 7) is that I can't seem to take a photo while recording in 4k. I'm not sure if that's a software or hardware limitation, but I used that all the time on those phones. I really like using the squeeze to open the camera, take a photo, and switch between front and rear cameras though!

Try Open Camera on XDA, it works shooting 1080P without EIS and no time length limitation on 4K.
I've also see the same issue on the HTC 10 in regards to the 4k and taking a photo while recording if you can call it an issue. I suppose no one had complained about it and they left it unchanged

It's a nice camera app, thanks. Tried various settings in the app for video recording. Looks like no matter what framerate you choose, it can't go above 30fps. I thought maybe it would let me shoot 1080p/60, but nope (even when setting it to 60fps, it still records at 30). Also doesn't seem to be a way to take a photo while shooting video in this app? Nice that you can shoot longer than 6 minutes in 4k though (I didn't try it yet, but I assume it works).

I call it an "issue" only because I have come to expect it when shooting video now. In fact, I used it quite frequently on my iPhone and Galaxy S8. Being able to take a photo without interrupting the video recording is a pretty important feature, in my opinion. I suppose one could load up the video in software and capture a frame manually, but it's a feature that other flagships have, so I miss it.

Indeed, my old year 2012 HTC One S supported shooting FHD video and taking a real photo at the same time and I owned a Galaxy S6 support that feature too. However, I think during 4K recording that no phone could take a real photo, all they do is just capture a frame from video clip and pretend that is a photo.

Right, I understand it's not an actual "photo" at the highest resolution, but I would still like the convenience of capturing a frame during 4k video recording like I can on all of the other flagships phones.
Wow I'm glad I found this post, I thought I was going crazy with the issues you mentioned, especially the cropped 1080p video! I hope they can fix that with the 60fps update, because it is really annoying.

1080p60 is being introduced in stock ROMs with versions 1.26 and higher.
Do you know if EIS for 4k video is planned? Thinking about buying the U11 instead of the much too expensive Pixel 2, but the lack of EIS in this case is a bit of a bummer.

What is the best video camera app for axon 7?

I am looking for a camera app that can utilize the axon 7's 60fps at 1080p and 120fps at 720p, so far it doesnt matter what app ive tried (on oreo stock a2017u) every app only actually records at 30fps, ideally it would be something like open camera where I can manually change the bitrate shutter speed iso etc.
Im on the stock oreo rom but if needed I can install Lineage os, (but i would rather not)

Stock camera app? I haven't seen any other app so far which can actually utilize 60fps and slowmo. It's ZTE's fault for their weird camera driver programming.

the issue is that the stock camera app is just so... mediocre, to say the least, th camera quality is a sold 6/10 but could be sooo much better q.q
I wonder does it need Camera2 API?
I just shot a little test with Snap Camera HDR then checked with an editor app and it was about 43 fps but when I hard switched it to 60 fps and tried to shoot it failed.
It's still my favourite camera app.

I couldnt get any apps to shoot at 60fps+ regardless of camera api2 support or not, I was experiencing the same thing with snap camera hdr, regardless if the bit rate was 20 or 200Mbits/s and regardless of encoder highest I could get was that 43 fps, even on 720p.
Hello
I am usin OpenCamera
blue icon
It has everything. you can change Bitrates, resolutions, wide array of settings.
IMHO must have app. For videos i choose that.
Check it out and let me know howw well i have have helped you and how this is the solution to camera XD (joking a little bit) But yes,its the Best in my opinion. i use it. (axon 7 4k at 80Mb/s is amazing...)
I'll be honest, Open Camera has potential but it's never good enough. I try it occasionally and then uninstall. It has weird eccentricities but the biggest one is often the preview is quite different to the captured image.
Snap Camera HD shats all over it in so many ways.

Best Google Camera port and settings?

Hi, is there a Google Camera port out there that is generally considered as the best for Max Pro M1 (3GB) right now? I've been watching videos on Youtube, and they usually use different settings. Most videos are in Hindi as well, so I don't fully understand, I mean, why do they use just HDR instead of HDR+? Why Full HD 1080p for videos instead of 4K UHD 30fps? How do you determine the right port and settings, do you just try them out one by one? Right now I'm using the latest port by marlin-ku, which is GCam_7.0.009_A_011.

Thanks for the reply! I tested many versions though and all of them seems to work well, so I'm not really sure what to pick. I guess people don't use 4k that much because it can be laggy?
Does the night mode works well with this cam? With my gcam version I get greenish tint in all the photos with night mode.

Gcam?

Just wondering if there is a version of gcam that can be installed? And where do you check for development and updates these days? Had a Pixel for so long I've no idea where to go!!

considering the fact that the 8 Pro is one of the two phones in the world that uses the IMX 689 sensor, it'll take some time for developers to make a proper port for this phone.
Any luck?

Yep, This version of GCAM cannot support the UltraWide and Tele cam yet.
says it need root access to work..
That means I have no luck using ultrawide and tele lens with GCAM apps...
Use stock apps instead

...
I really hope we will see a stable version of GCam working with all Oneplus 8 Pro cameras.
I personally think there is a lot of potential in that IMX 689 sensor.
I am still thinking there should be some real use of this strange photochrom camera as well.
And may be a nice manual PRO VIDEO mode as well :fingers-crossed:
Most probably I will get the Filmic Pro anyway soon.
I only just installed GCam yesterday after reading this thread .. lol.
So far played with the different modes (not lenses/cameras) but the night mode seems really good. The downside (if I can call it that), is that it appears that Gcams ability to take HDR photos vs stock app's ability, Gcam's takes much longer to process before storing? Like as you take the shot, there is noticeable processing time, vs. the stock app which seems to effectively point-shoot-store fairly quickly.

I used to have GCAM on my OnePlus 6 before and yes, the GCAM HDR takes much longer than the stock HDR but the quality is faaaaaaar better on GCAM so the processing time has whatever reason but it's definitely worth it

GCam has a different algorithm which processes many frames. In Pixel devices, there is a dedicated chip (pixel visual core) which performs the necessary computations. In other devices, it is the main processor that has to do all the job
I played around with the GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v1.8, which delivers nice results. but I noticed that the maximum resolution is 4000x3000. the stock camera goes up to 8000x6000. is there a way to activate the full resolution? in the settings it is already set to full resolution.
other than that, can anyone recommend any of the configs for this gcam? https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/configs-urnyx-02/
How does the night mode compare to the pixel 4? I imagine it would be better because of the larger sensor
