Who is really missing Rooting and Roming?

I've always had an Android phone. My last was the Nexus 6p. I felt that phone, because it was stock would not need to be rooted, but I feel into that trap. Waiting for small tweaks to a stock rom that was already pretty good.
With no root for the S7 edge, I have found that I don't really care or miss it for right now. This phone easily make it through a day or more of battery. I have a Chase account, so I use Samsung pay a lot. Theming make it easy to give this phone a better than stock touch wiz look. I've always loved wireless charging.
If I have any gripes with this phone it is low speaker volume, which if we did have root I know that could be fixed. Not having the ir blaster to change the TV around the house would have been great to keep. I have two boys, 10 and 7,and they are always misplacing the remotes.
Other than that the S7 edge address a main concern with Android phones and that is battery life.

To be honest bro, I have the s7 edge at home for Verizon & I use the Nexus 6p as my daily. It's just how smooth and fast this phone is, touchwiz laggs like crazy compared to my Nexus 6p on beans rom, also I'm running my rooted apps like servicely and I get better battery life. If the s7 edge had root and unlocked bootloader no doubt it would whoop the Nexus 6p, but currently it just doesn't man.

Yea. I am really unimpressed. I haven't system updated yet, the bugs are piling on. It runs games really well. Better than every android emulator. That says a lot, but it doesn't do much for me. I really miss root. I don't like the stock ROM, it isn't bloated, it has so much potential. It feels like an alpha release 0.78.
They were close but still a lot of work to be done.

Your kidding right?
Alpha release, if you believe that you don't understand alpha, beta, and shipping releases. This is obviously a shipping release. Very few bugs.
I've never had anice emulator run games as well as a flagship. Root is/was useful when companies couldn't put their bloatware on the phones without causing all kinds of havoc on the system. Now between cutting a bunch of bloat and increasing the specs the flagship store run super well.
I'm really not sure why you would say it's an alpha release, maybe you have a bad device and should return it.

I miss root a lot, as well as tinkering around. I imagine if root doesn't happen in the next month or two I may be tempted to sell S7E. I am not loyal to any cell until it's really rootable. Options are everything.
Have their been any announcements on any teams or members working on root, or is this something people don't want to say in the event they are unsuccessful?

I'm rather enjoying using Samsung Pay at the moment. Can't say I'd want to lose that by messing with things.

Minus the 3Mint (never heard of it), I miss all of the above, in addition to Viper4Android. Man. The stock equalizer is aight, but I can't get half the power that I did out of Viper. And I never realized how many of my apps and pages had ads until I didn't have AdAway/root. I've developed, so I realize you have to make money, but most ads are most of the time inherently dangerous.

OP I am in the exact same boat as you. I had a Nexus 6P before I got the S7 Edge, and when I got it I told myself that I would keep it stock and just enjoy fast updates and smooth performance. Of course, I couldn't stay stock for more than a few days and ended up installing custom ROMs and kernels. It got to the point that every week or so I was flashing something difference. I thought this was a huge time waster, but I just couldn't stop from trying new ROMs as I always thought I could tweak something for just a bit better battery life and performance.
Now that I have the S7 Edge I do love that I keep it stock and don't waste time on those things, or spending hours on XDA. Although, I do miss the buttery smooth performance of the 6P, the S7 lags like crazy and overheats quite often.

Dead on. I wasted a few years on the nexus program. It's fun but very tedious. Now I just enjoy my games and use my device. The fiancé much enjoys me not up late at night resetting things up due to a bad flash, bug, etc.

I cannot disagree with you more. I want to remove the bloat. I want to be able to modify the edge because i keep having unintentional touches. There should be an option to disable it. I want to be able to install apks that need root. I want Adblockers. I want to fully customize it . I want so much but this phone can not deliver any.

That is what I mean. With rooting phones it becomes slightly tedious.
My wife has an iPhone and I admired how that phone just works with very few hiccups. I don't believe any phone is perfect, but I like Android better and I feel this phone is close to being perfect with a few quirks.

I miss adaway and titanium backup. I have nexus 6p and s7 edge. My s7 edge is my daily driver due to battery life, but when I'm home I only use my nexus to avoid ads and bloatware

The honeymoon of a new and good device soon goes away. Then logic kicks in I won't be that guy who says we won't ever get root, but I don't know if I can go another month of not updating my S7E with a custom rom, not having ad blocker, and a smoother and fluid device. Call me a sellout, but there is a line between denial and reality. A lot of folks are ok and willing to hang onto S7E regardless of root - not I. I would rather better performance and less battery with root than our current situation.

I'm the same. Working ad-blocker is a big deal for me. Among other things. May end up buying it out and selling it on swappa.

But if you use the Samsung browser you CAN use AD blocker without root, as it supports it as an add in. Google it.

Hello all. I haven't poked or prodded, or gone "under the hood" since I picked up the Nexus 6P at launch. I started to have problems with battery life when the Nougat betas started rolling out. So I jumped to the OnePlus 3T. Things are better, but I still miss the actual Google experience. I'm curious if it would be possible to mod the 6P to give me all the things I want. Below is my list. Let me know if it's possible, please, and I'll try to figure it out on my own. A lot has changed since my Nexus 5...
First, I'd like to modify the build prop to where I can get access to the pixel launcher directly from the play store. I know this is easy, but I'm not sure if it will work with the other wishes.
Second, I'd like to be able to run with Franco's kernel. I think this would greatly help my battery life issues.
I'd like to be able to keep Android pay, as I see it as a huge security benefit (plus, I'm trying to get down to just my phone and keys, no wallet).
Lastly, if possible, I'd like to relock the bootloader. I know this one isn't very likely, but like I said, it's a wish list of sorts.
Any and all advice is appreciated!

Based on your needs, sound like keeping your phone running on stock unrooted is the best idea. You can just install the pixel launcher from apkmirror.
Magisk is able to hide root and let you retain the ability to use Android pay, for now. In the future, it may not be able to and you would need to be on stock for it the work. You'll get updates without the headache of having to use a computer or flash different recoveries just to update.
In terms of battery, a 3450mah battery in a nonbloated phone should be yielding you good battery life. If not, check for a rogue app.
Rooting and modding isn't the same as it was in '09, it's gotten to the point where it's just more of a hassle and headache just to get it running as it should/properly. Android has gone a long way in terms of security measures which is a huge plus but it also hurts the modding ability at the same time.

You would need to be rooted to use a custom kernel and you can't have a locked bootloader and be rooted on the 6P. If you want to use Android Pay on a rooted phone Magidisc and PhilsSU are the only options that I know of. You will get better battery life with Franco's kernel but it will never be great on this phone. Can't the one plus 3 be modded to give you a more Google experience? I read that the developer activity was very active with that phone.

Totally derped on the custom kernel requiring root. The 3T does have a pretty deep community, but there's a little bit of a disconnect between the 3 and 3T. Another big thing for me is the touch latency. I swipe to type on the Gboard, and I'm always having to manually type words, because the 3T can't keep up. Never had the issue with the 6P though. Thanks for the advice on the 6P though. Might make it a weekend project, before switching my DD.

That's interesting. I thought the 3T was supposed to be a pretty fast phone. I'm in the market for something to replace my 6p since it probably won't last too far past the end of the warranty. It sounds like the 3T isn't it.

Oh, it's definitely a fast phone! Screen latency just isn't up to Nexus level. It's a great phone, no question. I would just like to jump back to "pure" Android sometimes. 3T, IMO, no better phone, for the value. Very customizable for sure, and solid as a rock (yay for 6GB of RAM!). Just feels slightly different from where I've made my home, since the Galaxy Nexus. The updates are even getting regular, to where you shouldn't worry about being left behind. I just miss carrying a little piece of Google with me from time to time.

[Noob] Rom Advise neede

Hi all
As in title i need some advice to change rom on my le pro 3.
The point is that I've always had nexus devices (4 and 5) and the latter stopped working. I've loved that plain and simple android so much that i never even bothered to change roms on those devices. So now i bought this Leeco Le pro 3 since I am not willing or better can't afford to spend so much money on those new pixel phones.
And here is the problem: I would like to install a rom as similar as to that "nexus" experience possible. Just plain android with no extra stuff I don't (think) I need. I'd then just download the apps I was previously using from play store.
Do you think there is something out there that could do the job?

Well we have the Lineage team working on roms, we had a great rom the GTX ones but trolls got the OP pissed, in my opinion the battery on this phones is much better with the stock roms rooted and debloted, i get something like one day and some hours of battery life, I only use twitter, FB and hot spot when i need too, is also connected to BT streaming music when on the road. I tried using the Liniage and slim, and some how battery suffers im not sure why, but eventually those devs will figure it out, I came from the 6P and nugat screw up that phone badly, the UI on this phone gets a little to get used too nut IMO is worth the change.

Give stock rom a try. I also like very clean roms but this stock is really good, just install nova laucher and customize it like the new pixel launcher, it gives you a pretty good clean android experience, with some little tweaks.

Hi Cubanghost and thank you for your answer.
For now I did a backup of whats in the phone as it arrived. I might have found something here and it looks like the closest stock android experience that is available to me. The "grossoshop" version I have is just too confusing to me so I think I will just try the one i linked above and if it is not satisfying I will revert to the original and try to get used to it.

Not a problem i was lost on the IU for about a month since i was so used to my 6P but now i cant tell you the relief i have to move away, also the idea the Engineer had was also a good one i have nova swiping up like the pixel launcher. but i also heard good things about the chinesse rom's and battery been awesome. go for it and welcome to the LeEco family, this phone does not disappoints IMO.

So for those of you who have gone through a ton of Android phones like I have, do you think it's the smoothest you've used? The S8 is nothing like the S7 touch wiz or I call it tough wiz. It was choppy and sticky. This S8 is so fluid and smooth. The more I use it the more I appreciate it. It's by far the smoothest interface I've used. However I have not used the Pixel but did have the Nexus 6p which I think the Pixel is a tweaked out version of the 6p anyway and the S8 beats it out. What do you guys think. Is the S8 the smoothest Android interface on the market? I think so. Just curious of everyone's take on it. Chime in and let me know what your take is. Do you keep your S8 at full resolution or do you keep it in default mode as it came? Also it seems that most have the plus version. I feel like I am the minority having the regular S8. Post what you have either the regular size or the plus and why you chose your model. I'm just curious of others thoughts. I also see a lot of people not using a screen protector. I'm definitely using one but not a tempered glass. I'm using a liquid skin by skinomi. Post what you use or the kind as I'm curious what else is out there that is good. The Skinomi is great and does not collect fingerprints hardly at all. So are you a regular size S8 user or a Plus user? Tell me why you chose one over the other. I personally like the one handed use. I wanted the plus but I was afraid it would be just too big after prolonged usage. I might be totally wrong though. Anyways thoughts???

After a few months, I totally don't have the feeling to find custom rom and flash it. Samsung phone that I used previously always end up running a custom rom, I always feel something ****ty and need to find custom rom to change it.
But this is the first phone that I break the screen so fast T.T
I broke it last week....i thought I already put my phone in my pocket, but after I release my hand.... Good bye my screen, time to waste some time at the service center ><

My Experience
It is the best Samsung Interface but It is not the smoothest android interface. Xperia has very light UI which is very smooth as well as HTC sense is also fluid, these custom UI doesn't have more features than Samsung's UI but they are optimized better than samsung's UI.

Stock its stuttering and quite laggy. With a custom Rom and kernel it's great.

I came from a OP3t which was insanely smooth so maybe that's why.

I love my new s8+ . I have to agree it is very smooth and fast.

I've had my S8+ from TMo since day one and it lags a lot. The features are great, but the lag is too much. I shouldn't have to factory reset a phone to get great performance.

Better? Probably not. Custom ROMs are about features. That said they can be just as 'Stable' and 'Perform' just as well in some, if not all, cases

A rom similar to stock would also do the job with no bugs

I gave up on custom ROMs once I got the op5. It feels like a phone with a stable custom ROM without the occasional bugs I always had with custom ROMs.
My second phone is an HTC one m8 with a custom ROM and despite picking a stable ROM it's having issues with installing new apps lately.
I've gotten tired of the custom ROM thing and just want a phone with a stock like OS that always works and I feel like I finally got that with stock oos

Stock or open beta does the job for me.

I'm curious how the open betas are when it comes to bugs? Having updates faster would be nice but I like having a phone that just always works.

There's no difference between stable and open beta in terms of stability or bugs. Different/other features, but no bugs. Stability is the same.

Nope. Nothing can beat oxygen os. My advice, stick to oxygen os.
My setup -
Open beta 19.
Magisk 17.1 - adaway - Viper4android - youtube vanced - Google sans font - Google camera.

OOS for the win.

for now , I agree.
But in few years, when OP will drop OP5 support, this thread will be helpful.
Just like the OP1, I was looking for a stable nougat rom, and from what I read, even lineage wan'snt ''that stable''. I went for the SlimRom 7.x, but even that, some apps crashs.
Anyway, for the OP5, got with stock OOS rom, its updated to the latest (or almost) stable android version.

I don't know about it being the most stable...
Bluetooth has been broken for me for five months and seems with the release of 5.1.5 there's been a huge increase in the number of users complaining of Bluetooth problems on the OnePlus forums.
Contacting OnePlus support has been useless so I'm going to start trying custom roms in the hopes I will get working Bluetooth again.
On a previous phone (I can't remember if it was the LG G4 or Galaxy S4), there was a noticeable camera quality drop when you moved to a custom rom, do OP5 custom roms experience this behavior or can I still expect the same photo quality?

I have actually downloaded all the files (hopefully) that I will need to root the phone in another year or 2 when support is dropped and it gets way behind in updates.

Can support this as well. While the Bluetooth issue sure sounds like a bummer I'd really try to get OOS working.
I went to using custom roms shortly after getting the phone as well, since it was always the superior option with my previous phones, but stock is really just damn good, hands down.

I've never noticed any Bluetooth issues with mine in the year I've had it so far. It's stock, never even rooted it. Only ota updates and it's never been factory wiped yet. So it's obviously not affecting everyone. I haven't noticed any posts about it on here but I haven't been on OnePlus forums in a long time.

My wife and I actually went from having occassional bluetooth issues connecting to our cars to it being rock solid a while back, probably the same update. Bluetooth between cars and phones has always been a mess in my experience, I've always assumed the cars aren't following the BT standards properly so the device manufacturers have to play around trying to find the balance between which cars to get working and which might break.

I drive a 1984 car so my Bluetooth is only really used with my tile keychain so I can't lose my phone or keys and occasionally for music but I usually use the headphone jack plugged directly into my stereo for better sound quality.
Even the work trucks I drive don't have Bluetooth (2005 and 2013 Silverado).

Unpopular opinion here but I really like PixenOS more than OOS.

For me the main reason to switch to LOS is the system profiles. I haven't found a similar simple solution to activate a hotspot when my OP5 connects to my Car Radio.
I guess you can do the same with Tasker, but it seems much easier to me to just use the system profiles in LOS.
