Favorite Jellybean ROMS

Which ROM do you feel works the best for your Vibrant? Of course this is a matter of opinion, which is exactly what I want to hear. I'm running CM 10.1.3 right now and enjoying it. At times it can feel a little bit sluggish but I don't know if it's the ROM or my phone. I'd also be interested in hearing about your experiences with battery life in each ROM. I've been thinking of trying CyanAOSP because it's less cluttered and I have a hunch it would be more snappy.
Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules, I just wanted a really recent thread comparing the strengths and weaknesses of all the recent Jellybean ROMs. This isn't a question thread, it's more of an opinion thread.

I'm using CM10.2 build date - 10/15 for a day now. Have no problems. Everything works fine, including GPS after ds. Battery drain is normal.

DS is DeepSleep. Its a state in which the phone uses minimal battery and thus the battery is saved.

If you mean the official CM 10.1.3, yes I tried it. It is stable and smooth. You can use it as a daily driver.

I just saw that you were using CyanAOSP. How would you compare it to CM 10.1.3 and 10.2?
Also, do you know where I can get the 1.75 ROM? I've heard the 2.0 has problems.

been running cyanaosp 2.0 since its release and its been fine beside a few random reboots, but im sure it was cause i had my device oc'd to high. this rom is perfect for me as i play alot of games.

New member of the forums, but I've been reading as much as I can about my Vibrant (Fascinate?) and I'm still kind of confused as to which model my phone really is. It's a Telus model sgh-t959d, but after flashing CyanAOSP 3.0.0 for the i9000, my phone info shows model GT-i9000. I understand there are similarities between these devices, but I was a little nervous about bricking my phone by flashing the wrong ROM. Well, it was a painless process that took less than 2 minutes! I upgraded from PassionICS, which was a good ROM, but kind of laggy. After a day of use, I can say CyanAOSP is much quicker, more refined and more fun to use. The customizations offered by Nova launcher are quite extensive and make it feel like a new phone. I highly recommend this ROM! Many thanks to the hard working devs!

Anybody have kernel recommendations to get more battery life out of CM 10.1 or 2?

Im using CM 10.1.3 stable, think this is a best and stable ROM

I was using one of the CM 10.2 nightlies (10/25 specifically) for about a week before giving up on some serious battery drain and background android OS data usage issues... First time I ever exceeded my 5gig threshold pushing me down to slower speeds. Also USB data transfer simply stopped working after about a week... couldn't even mount via recovery.
Ultimately had to get new ROM files into my phone via the microSD/USB adapter and internally transferring to the internal directory.
That said, CM 10.2 itself is a very pleasant experience if you can avoid such issues - In hindsight I'd strongly suggest giving it a try but with a build that's known to be stable and without any such major issues if you intend to use it as a daily driver (the 10/15 build has been recommended more than once in my forum trawling). Lesson learned!
I made the switch last Saturday (6 days ago) to SlimBean Build 2 however, which is also based on 4.3.1. By comparison to my last experience, this has zero issues falling back to deep sleep, even after loading it down with all my favorite apps and sync settings. I've had one random reset to recovery in the middle of a phone call, and gps performance has been hit or miss so far, but otherwise there's a lot to like! Battery is back to respectable charging intervals and background data is in check. ROM itself is very zippy. Lock screen by comparison to CM 10.2 seems slightly sluggish to respond. I'll likely be sticking with this for a while.

Should I upgrade to Android M?

I'm asking this question because I want input from users who did upgrade and I'm not sure if I need the upgrade or not.
I'm currently going by the logic: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I'm quite happy with how Android L with the stock Kernel works on my device and after looking at the features that Google advertises for M I discovered that I can live without most of them.
I'm mostly interested in the new battery management system, app permissions, overall performance improvements in apps and general usage and some misc things like the new copy/paste thingy.
So let's say that of all the above, I'm mostly interested in the new battery management system. How well does it in you experience work? How much more usage do you get out of your phone? Do the new Doze and App Standby features really work as well as Google advertises them?
Also how stable is Android M on the Nexus 4? This is the main thing that is keeping me from upgrading. I would rather stay on stock then get a few new features that may or may not work well or even worse, get a phone that crashes every 5 minutes.
I'm currently looking to use the Pure Nexus Project ROM (because I want the pure Google experience) and the TAURUS Kernel (heard a lot of good things about this Kernel and it works well with the ROM I've chosen by the reports of some users).
So what do think? Is it worth it to upgrade to M or should I wait for the next major Android version?

I have been using One Of A Kind ROM (OCT 31, Build) and it has been rock solid for me. My phone's battery definitely lasts longer than stock Lollipop ROM. We are talking a couple of hours extra. The Doze feature works well, there is very little battery drain on standby. You will see that from battery stats. You will be waiting for a while until next iteration of Android. As you know Google has stopped supporting Nexus 4, it will be at least few weeks to a month before we get anything going for our beloved Nexus 4. Even then, the stability won't be guaranteed.
I think there are a few stable ROMs out there. Back up everything and give it a try. Worst case scenario, you go back to what you had.
I tried M, and I am not going back to Lollipop.

Yes, you should. Doze makes a difference for me, and the permission stuff is always useful to have. If you find yourself confortable with stock L, then you should flash "stock M", which is, in my opinion: Fake Nexus ROM.
I had same doubts one month ago, and I tried with a few ROMs out here, searching for stability, battery life, without compromising performance. I stopped on the ROM I linked you, try it!

I have decided to not upgrade for the time being.

It does have noticeable improvements, the system is smoother, battery life is longer (you should probably install Grennify to further improve the new Doze mode and App Standby functionalities),
and it comes with app permission control.
With regard to stablization, I have been using the PureNexusProject rom and the TAURUS kernel for nearly a month, no reboot no crash, no bizarre behaviors, everything seems fine and I really enjoy it.
I personally recommand you to try it, anyway it's the new Android!

I'm loving android M, Doze is really working to me!
So I think you should give it a try.

For a number or reasons. It's mostly that I'm happy how things are working right now and I don't have time to upgrade. Also, I don't have enough space to fully backup my apps.

I am just telling my experience, all the Dev's are best, they are the ones who let me explore more in around android and it's versions.
I used custom roms on k5 plus 3gb for 2 years i think.
It was like first few months i used the original rom and then i voided the warranty with custom roms as i saw more possibility and newer versions of android coming better than what i had. I kept exploring every part of the phone, and whatever softwares i could use and get more from this phone. Few roms lasted around 4-5 months. I love the nougat roms still, there is a Android Q rom already here, amazing. It was a good experience, until this last few months i started to have battery drain faster when i would use the hotspot feature or use bluetooth for headsets, and gps was like the most battery drainer. I kept changing roms and seeing what would give more bettery life while using, the sleep/screenoff state uses like no energy and then opposite happen if i use in full brightness outside and gps
Then
today i just tried to see the stock rom backup is working or not, it did, and now i realise that the most stable rom is the stock rom that comes from lenovo. The battery life is just way better than any other roms (+1hour than what you get in current Oreo and pie roms), the performance is back, Dolby Atmos is back and works, the inbuilt vr works.
The apps which were quite heavy lagged in animations in custom roms, stock does it smoothly, and i didn't need to get a small gapps package for performance this time, stock has like most gapps i think and it's smooth.
New stuff like play protect, assistant, well-being, etc are now available for this old lollipop rom as well, most of the features in the future versions are now available to use with simple downloads and a few majisk modules, without harming performance.
i am not sure how secure the rom/os it self is with old security patches. But yeah original rom got to be top 5 in best rom/os available for this device in terms of overall usability in daily life.
Tell me what your experience has been, i will use the stock lenovo again now for sometime. And might get back to custom".:laugh::good:

just to add you could try the latest stock ROM our device got wich is MM, and tell us your experience. I'm on it since a lot of time, and I won't move from it anymore.

go to TWRP and restore only /boot and /system partitions. that's it.
You could share with us how did you feel it compared with LP.

Lenovo stock ROM wasn't that bad but after installing Android 10 (AOSP) Custom ROM on my Vive K5 Plus, it's feels a relief.
Yes there are some minor issues & bugs but over all satisfactory experience.
Personally I will always stick with this ROM over Lenovo stock 5.1

Yep aosp 10 feels good.... I will use it when it gets a bit more updates

AOSP 10 has got another build. I guess the last possible build since Dev may be moving out of Vibe K5 Plus platform.
I have just upgraded to the new build & it's stable enough.
Yes although performance can't be called butter smooth but it's better than previous build & most of the phone features that I may need in daily usage are working fine.
Standby time is good but SoT is on lower side, but I can't blame the ROM, it's my battery which is very old & worn out by now.

The best rom with extended battery life was AOSP extended. i used it for 2 years with Dolby atmos mode and it worked flawlessly. Stock rom eats up battery too fast.

Out of curiosity, how many of these do you think are still in service?

There doesn't appear to be much activity on this forum or in any of the custom ROMs for this device. I'm sad that it's stuck on Marshmallow (I know Nougat ROMs exist, but in my experience they were too unstable to use) when Android 11 is about to drop, and that GNU/Linux is not available for it. With the newest builds I can find being from mid 2019 and the Linux kernel stuck on an unsupported version, I just don't trust it to be secure any more, so I'm now using it mostly airgapped, and only on a trusted firewalled network when I absolutely must use the wi-fi.
In order to get some idea of how much hope there is, I'd like to know if anyone has a guess for how many of these are still in service.

I have one that I play with from time to time but mostly just email. I still have one brand new in a box that we never used as we got it as part of a promotion. I've thought about it using it with my OBD2 connector to troubleshoot the cars.

I got 3 of it, grandparents using 2 of them and Im using the last one for reading and surfing web.

Me! My father bought it back like in 2013 and haven't used it much until last year. Then he gave it to me and I was pumped cause never really had a tabled. I discovered how comfortable are they to read/surf/watch YouTube.
I flashed it with Lineage and later Unlegacy, both at android 7.1. I must say when it functions correctly, it FLIES!! I can watch YT videos at 720 no problems and the pictures look great, very nice colors!
Unfortunately it hangs often, like there's a hidden process of the OS causing problems. It heats the hell out of the CPU and resetting doesn't seem to solve it, but eventually goes away and comes back to normal. It expends like 60% of the time functioning right and the other 40% overheating and hanging up. It also drops wifi intermittently.
Even with all those problems I refuse to let it go. Mine is almost new, and as I said I love how the screen looks despite it's resolution. I wish I could get an stable release in 7.1 so I can squeeze the rest of it's life out of it.
Lineage is not being ported anymore by AndroidAndi and Unlegacy project seems dead as well. Im lost here, if somebody can point me to a stable release I could use for the things I do with it, that would be AWESOME! (EDIT: Will try out AICP)

You mentioned AICP, which I haven't heard of before. Is that still maintained for it?

I still have a working one and use it accasionally for movies. Now I am looking for a "newer" stable ROM, at the moment it has cyanogen mod 13.0-201618 nightly

I don't think there ever was anything stable other than KitKat. I'm using an unofficial nightly Omnirom marshmallow build from early 2019. There are Nougat nightly roms, but I've found them to be too slow to use.

I still have a tab 2. i dont ever use it but its a good backup device. i messed around with it the first time i started running custom roms on androids. i put a couple different roms like cyanogen mod. but went back to stock and havent touched it since that was like 2014. now im trying to run the latest version of lineage os to make it faster and more stable as the stock/custom rom was very unstable.

I just turned mine on and see I'm running slim-4.44 build. Sucks cause lots of stuff doesn't work on it. Netflix isn't even supported.
Is there another rom that can be loaded that's better to get better functionality? I know this is super old hardware. Email pretty much is fine but seems silly to just use this for email. Hate to throw it out because it's in immaculate condition...lol

Yes, folks, this is old hardware but its not acceptable to ditch is just because its hard. We'll never move to a more sustainable economy is we can recycle old hardware. They work that you guys do with custom ROMs is awesome as you are doing your bit to not fill landfills. It would be good to know if there is still a relatively recent ROM for the Galaxy Tab 2 that is still maintained.

I suggest you to not flash gapps (they're too much resources intensive). I'm currently using it with L speed set everything on performance (don't fuss with ram manager settings because it crashes) and with Firefox preview ( the fastest and most stable for this tablet IMO) downloaded from apkpure

Which unlegacy build are you using for your tablet? There was a build from July 2019, and it seemed to have security patch as of 7/5/2019. Unfortunately, I saw it too late on jenkins, and it isn't available for download anymore (probably because I don't know how to download older artifacts from jenkins).
I have a P5113 10.1 WiFi, and I'm using unlegacy asop 6.0.1 build as of February 2019 since I couldn't get 7.1 to get pass the setup wizard, probably because of gapps as you suggested.

ME! I still use P3100 model it is fine but it is lagging a lot these days . I'm using slim os 4.4. Anybody can suggest a smooth ROM for the Device.

Yeah after so many attempts , I have now managed to make it usable.
Previously I was using crDroid rom (marshmallow) with gapps. But it was so laggy that I couldn't do anything ( literally anything). Now after doing some research I have chosen unified lineage OS 14 ( 7.0) from Android Andi's website. I am now using unified Twrp ( not the official one) also from Andi's website. And flashed a custom overclocked kernel. This time I am not using gapps ( very resource heavy). And using "NEW PIPE" for YouTube streaming. And rooted with magisk and flashed "Oxygen OS sounds" from magisk modules. Now I can watch YouTube videos 720p without any lag. This device flies now...??

I bought one for a microbiology class because it was cheaper to buy a digital copy and the tablet than to buy the book. It was a new book with no previous editions, so I had to. I never really had to use it for classes again, I prefer a book over the tablet. It has been sitting around untouched for a bit, I think the last time I used it Hulu or Netflix no longer had a compatible app version for android 4. I can't remember how much I paid for it, but I feel like it got slow and they quit pushing out updates not long after I bought it. I decided to pull it out and play around with it. It is not doing much, so if I mess it up by rooting it, I won't be too upset. Trying to find the best way to do this. I have also seen some information about LineageOS.

"Goto" ROM in 2021 without sluggishness

as the title says, what would be the snappiest rom to use today (not necessarily the bleeding edge Android) that is still quite speedy to use on this unit, while not being ancient at the same time?
Difficult question, i know. I resurrected my own unit yesterday (new screen assembly, new battery, new USB pcb. It basically turned out as a brand new device ) and i rooted it, increased the partition size and installed LineageOS 17 on it (tried 18 but had issues).
But would i be better off using Lineage/Android 9 or 8 here? From a snappy-ui perspective, but without going all old-school...?

I would also love to know this, I found mine after a couple of years, still working great!! And I would like to maybe update the system as it's still using the stock Android 6. Would it be beneficial to update it? And if so, to which version would you recommend?

While awaiting some nice pointers, i installed LineageOS17.1 + TWRP on mine, and also installed the ElementalX kernel (in order to bump up the cpu speed a notch + undervolt a bit). It surely did help quite much to reduce the sluggishness that it had when i used L.OS18, but its still not 100% perfect. Perhaps Android 8 or even 7 would be the perfect balance??

I'm also in the same position - I've been using Timur's as my Nexus is an indash install but it's so painfully slow if you try and do anything beyond play a song - Maps is near impossible.

Idk man. I finally went all the way down to Nougat (LineageOs14.1) to get it quite smooth (with ElementalX). And it is very fluent mostly, BUT...
If i leave the tablet for a whole day, i have severe issues getting the touch to recognize my fingers to start with (i have to press quite hard for it to register). As the CPU starts heating up (from using it), that sensation vanishes gradually and after a while (10 minutes or so, when i can feel the heat from the CPU from the back-cover) it actually is quite fluent. I have no clue why this is, i just know thats how it is.
I overlocked it to 1.7GHZ and undervolted it one step in elemental.

I'll be following this one with interest. Didn't have high hopes for anything modern, but Lineage sounds nice. Nine year old hardware inside, that's ancient, isn't it. Mine's still all original inside and out, including OS, but I found it in a drawer the other day and it was such a perfect formfactor, size and weight perfect for holding in one hand for reading, etc.

Haha, a timely post for me, as well. Just today I got mine charged for use as a budget desktop "nest hub" now that I got a new Nest doorbell.
It's been a trip reviving this tablet... and seeing it sitting next to my pixel 6 pro, it amazes me to think of how android and these devices have evolved over the years.
I can't even remember what (if any) rom and/or kernel I have installed on it, but it appears to be rooted. If there's something out there that's at least as good as this marshmallow rom to breathe new life into this tablet, that would make my day!

Well, I find that for being such an old device, with LOS18.1 it is working almost flawless. The gyroscope isn't working properly, but with some apps (not root) it is still manageable.
It is still great to play videos and as a docking station. It is a bit slow, but far way better than all 2013 devices, I had almost no stutter with VLC (only once when started, it lost some frames but it was acceptable).
The main drawback I have is that there is no charging+otg, even with QI charge. It could be used as a very cheap and efficient network storage but nope :\

Bumping this thread a bit. I have two wifi units, one running 11 and the other running 6 and while android 6 is quicker, it lacks in the "support" department (i.e running some applications that requires newer software). The 11 unit on the other hand is sluggish as #¤#" (to be expected on such an old device). But as a middle-ground, are there any flavour of (say) Android 9.x that runs somewhat smooth on this device (maybe with some booster such as elementalx on-board)?

So i went and installed Lineageos 16 on the previous Android 6 tablet and it works decently well (its a little bit more sluggish of course). But then i remembered back in the day i was running the ElementalX kernel on some older version in order to overclock the CPU a bit and went looking for some current version of it.
I bought it on the playstore and tried it out (also tried to flash it beforehand) but it seems to stop its support at Android 8
Next up, i bought the "setcpu for root" users (im running Magisk) but it just hangs and does nothing (unfortunately). Are there any "goto" ways to bump the cpu frequencey a tad bit nowadays with Android 9+ OS on this tablet?

If any older android device is running slowly, I always suspect emmc needing a trim personally. Did you let it sit overnight on a charger while powered on before deciding it was too slow (or run the fstrim batch file in cross to make sure you're clean)

Which kernel is compatible with latest lineage 18.1?
