I brought a OnePlus 6t and immediately unlocked the bootloader. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't as I'm not really sure I need root.
But now I have, I need to root to use various apps now that I have unlocked the bootloader.
When I first rooted it, I didn't install twrp but can't remember what I did and cant find any guides.
Can anyone let me know what process I need to root without installing twrp please?

Boot in fastboot mode, then temporarily boot into TWRP (fastboot boot TWRPimage.img) and flash magisk zip and reboot system.
P.s. "boot" command does not permanently flash the image.

I installed twrp and SU. Really the only reason I did it is because I use titanium backup to back up and restore apps and such. Otherwise I really don't need root.
I have two questions.
First Question: Can I re-lock the boot loader if I have TWRP and SuperSU installed? If not how can I use Android pay? Is there a work around? It's not allowing me to because it can't verify
Second Question: The OTA 6.0.1 won't stick. I'm pretty sure I've done one other over the air update (at least I thought I did, I may be remembering incorrectly) and it worked just fine. But for some reason 6.0.1 isn't taking. Any ideas?
If you don't need root what you can do is download the 6.0.1 imag direclty from google, put it in your adb/fastboo folder and use the flash-all command and it will erase root, twrp and it will be like you just got it from the factory. The only thing that would be still there is the unlocked bootloader. Once you've performed the flash-all command, you can simple lock the bootloader again. That's if you want to get rid of Root and Twrp.. If not, you can try a Rom like Chroma that has android pay working on it.. Here's the instructions. So I cannot lock the boot loader if I have root and twrp installed?
I really don't want to use a Rom. I'm happy with stock, just want to be able to use titanium backup.
And are ota updates not working if you have twrp installed?
OTA updates won't flash properly if you have TWRP installed, though I heard there is a way to extract the components of the update you want to apply so you can preserve root and custom recoveries while still updating. Sorry I don't know where the instructions are though.
No you can't lock the bootloader with TWRP installed, it can result in a brick.
I would not lock the bootloader unless you are 100% stock. You open yourself up to unrecoverable bricks. As for the update if you download the image from google you can just flash the individual partitions in fastboot. This way you can preserve your data. AFAIK, from my experience with other phones, when i install TWRP it will mess up my current OS so i would need to install other OS.

In twrp you have an option to flash SUPERSU.

you basically need to unlock the bootloader after requesting a code for it, then you can fastboot flash twrp, and then you can root it. your phone will be factory reset, but rooted.
twrp doesn't change anything in any rom.

Well, ask for unlock code - that's the first step.
I am interested in this as well, as from what I see some people seem to run into problems. Say one is on Nougat C432B380 (I'm B381) and has now got the unlock code. What then? First of all, unlocking the bootloader will result in a reset, clean C432B380 installation, right? Or will there be any need to flash something else?
EDIT: I passed the unlock part following the Guide, and ended up with a clean Nougat installation as I thought. Now what? In the OldDroid TWRP thread I see many people having trouble...

I recommend staying away from any custom roms for now as all seem to have problems... you say you have an unlocked bootloader, then next step would be flashing a custom recovery, then from there... flashing supersu... try not to do much more than that and accept a fully functioning rooted phone better than getting a squichy camera or whatever from custom roms.... wait till they get stable

I was not planning to install a custom ROM, I just want root, mainly for Viper4Android and some other things, but after reading the whole OldDroid TWRP thread I saw some people reporting problems with bootloops and whatnot, mainly after flashing SuperSU. Is flashing TWRP and then EliteKernel and rooting with phh or Magisk preferable? I just got my device back from the Huawei services, with a new board and everything and I don't want to ruin the stock installation again, so I am trying to be a bit more certain before I do anything.

EDIT: Okay, so what I did was flash the latest OldDroid TWRP through fastboot and then I booted into recovery and flashed the latest Magisk (v13.3 I think). Now I have root and everything seems to work. So happy.

stay away from magisk if you want something stable... at least my opinion. Magisk is fine, the only add it adds, is magisk hide, which seems to keep failing now for most people. I'm suffering through it now and switching to supersu... try finding the correct way to remove magisk root and go the chainfire's supersu

I restored a backup of the boot partition I had made when I first flashed TWRP which seems to have deleted Magisk, the app told me it was not installed (even though I see now a Magisk folder in data...) and then flashed Super SU, but I still can't delete system apps and having trouble with Viper*. But maybe it's not SU's fault. I don't know. I flashed v2.79, I previously had trouble with the newest versions.
Also, I had not activated the Hide function, I think.
*It is driving me crazy! Why does it not work? Supposedly I am root, I even deleted the system apps with the file managers but when I exited and reentered the folder they were there again. What is going on?... Wait... Is this normal, is it because it is system-less root?
To root any nougat fw:
1)unlock bootloader. You have to get unlock code from huawey and then in fastboot mode do: "fastboot oem unlock yourcode"

Will future OTA Oreo updates re-lock the bootloader. I unlocked mine to root using ADB tools. I then installed MagiskManager 5.6.0, It worked then it asked if I wanted to install Magisk v15.3. I tried to install v15.3 but after it said Magisk was not installed and at the same time I also found I had lost root. The phone appears to work OK so rather than mess about with flashing a new Oreo rom, I wanted to know if the next OTA update will automatically lock the bootloader.
Also, will it cause any harm if I try and re-root.

Depends on what your are doing
There are a couple of guides on here that deal with installing Magisk.
I'm not sure why it happened, but after using Magisk Manager and then trying to install Magisk v15.3, my A1 has lost root. The bootloader is still unlocked and I don't want to mess with the phone any more as its only a couple weeks old and has the original ota Oreo update. Is it possible to re-lock the BL by using ADB tools. If I put A1 into fastboot mode, connect A1 phone to win10 PC and enter adb command into powershell, then input... ' fastboot oem lock ' would that work or is it more complicated. I should add that it says Magisk is not installed I assume this is because I have lost root, when I try to re-install, it wont.
Another question. Is it safe to use ADB to lock the bootloader, or would I have to use Magisk Manager, even though it wont install it.
Also, will re-locking the bootloader wipe all data and effectively reset the phone.

(I didn't install TWRP because I am under the impression I can't pass safteynet with a custom recovery am I wrong about this?)
installed magisk.apk
So what step am I missing to save the stock backup so I can uninstall magisk for OTAs?
I had a Pixel for 3 years that had a broken fastboot and so I couldn't unlock the bootloader and never got to learn about the new AB partitioning until now. so I'm a little behind

Unlocking the bootloader can make you fail safety net, much less Magisk if its not set up right. The recovery wont matter.
My guide here is for installing Lineage, however Step 5 will work for OOS too and make you pass safety net. So feel free to install TWRP.
I recommend Funk Wizards Guide on installing TWRP. Also note the section on EFS backups.
Look into TWRP backups, I dont use them, but I know its not straight forward unfortunately.
So when I'm flashing the magisk file in TWRP, does it save a copy of the image it's modifying? And where does it save that image? Also where should i put that image so I can uninstall-> Restore Images?
