Reason behind flashing latest firmware - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Sorry for this noob question. But i appreciate any answers...
Most of the rom devs advice to flash 'latest firmware' before flashing their roms. First of all What is meant by firmware? Is it the original rom when the device is bought? If yes then why advise flashing latest firmware and then clean flash custom roms?. I mean the latest firmware gets wiped on clean install. Then why recommend latest firmware flashing?

OEMs usually refer 'ROM' as 'Farmware'.
But when developers say 'Firmware', they usually mean 'Baseband' or 'Radio'. This is not a full Stock ROM, but only a small part of it. It stays on the device even after Clean Flashing.
When an update of Stock ROM released, it mostly comes with a newer & updated Firmware (also called Baseband or Radio). Developers sync those new changes into their custom ROMs and Kernels when they release a new build, for a better experience (they usually mention it in the changelog, like - 337 sync).
Sometimes few features of those new custom ROM or Kernel builds may not work properly if a device is running on older version of Firmware. That's why they advise users to flash latest Firmware.
Updating Firmware is easy. Just flash the latest version's zip file via Recovery. That's it. No need to wipe anything. And this procedure won't wipe any user data either.
I hope I cleared your doubts...

So you are saying it is always good to flash latest firmware. Right?. But in which partition does it sit?

Sometimes Baseband can reeduce internet speed.
It is probably stored in Modem partition.

ROM and radio/modem?

Are the ROMs (stock ROM from sammobile or here like Tweaked/AOSP/Jedi etc...) include radio/modem?
Or is the radio/modem is a separate flash?
Sorry for the dumb question.
Thank you very much.
First time unlocked bootloader user here. In for answers.
Just found a note:
You can usually flash the radio separately because ROMs dont typically include them (or if they do, its an option in Aroma). Radios are therefore not usually affected by Rom flash.
Kernels on the other hand, are typically included with the ROM so if you want to use a different one, you need to flash it after the rom. Usually your fine flashing them together without rebooting in between. HOwever, sometimes it can be quirky so I usually boot into the rom and then boot back into recovery and flash a kernel.
The android setup (account stuff) is indepenedent of the kernel so do that whenever
The Stock Rom´s from Samsung Sammobile have always Radio/modem. Not confused. The Dev's on Custom Rom's have sometime difficulties to flash it by Recovery.

Thanks. So that means we can't restore to a stock Samsung ROM (from Sammobile) without also restore the radio?

I not undestood. What You mean can't restore?
The nandroid backup never made backup from modem. The restore can't restore it.

[Q] [Newbie Question] Details about rooting

Hello all, and please help me with some small details before rooting.
I have an LG G2 with stock KITKAT 4.4.2., baseband M8974A-1.0.190084,kernel 3.4.0., build D80220b, software D80220b-219-02.
My questions
- do I need to upgrade stock firmware to D802d or D802f before rooting, and if yes wich is more stable
- is a SIM card needed (as inserted in the phone) for rooting process
- do I need to unlock the phone before rooting since it is locked with my local carrier (TELE 2 HR)
- does a custom ROM automaticly eliminate OTA upgrade and so prevent from bricking, or it must be unchecked manualy
- when installing a custom ROM (probably Cludy G3) do I need to flash a new custom kernel or it doesent mater (probably Bruce if it is compatibile)
- how does one check for compatibility ROM - kernel, is it just simple as finding "stock ROM" - "stock kernel" in the title
- do I need to instal a new KK baseband before custom ROM since I am allready on KITKAT
- do I need to do any kind of factory reset and/or wipe before rooting or later instaling a custom ROM
Thank you very much in advance, I have been searching all over for this simple answers but couldnt find any,
Sorry if the questions are too noobish but I am afraid tostart anything before I find the answers

1. You don't have to upgrade because you can use rooter that is compatible with your current firmware build, the differences between the firmware are only on their features, with less case of minor problem solved from previous build.
2. No, you don't need to put your SIM on.
3. Custom ROMs are meant to give you better performance of the current build, especially if it is Stock Based Custom ROM. Why you shouldn't update via OTA? because with several changes in the custom ROM, Official build will find it different from its official release, which would cause errors that could ended up with bootloop, even worse.. Hopefully, several developers also have their own OTA feature so people can easily get the update.
4. It doesn't matter since Custom ROMs sometimes come with their own suggested kernel that fit with the ROM. But you can also try other kernels if it suits you.
5. Yes, it is quite that simple, but also try to find out whether it is compatible or not with the ROM.
6. No, if you already on KitKat, you don't need to flash KK baseband.
7. Only when you are about to flashing new ROM..

signal drops.. need to switch modem please help

found my country is familiar with this modem:
i9500xxuhoc5
Israel (Cellcom) 5.0.1 I9500XXUHOC5
or
I9500XXUHOI1
I want to download the full rom and then extract only the modem and flash it
is it possible? how to do it?
found the download link but when I extract all I have is 1 file:
tar.md5
thanks so much!!
Hey are you referring to the official full rom/firmware downloaded from sammobile.com?
I know this sounds ridiculous, but I got around my modem issues by installing the official rom/firmware from the above website (thus installing the proper modem), then flashing everything I wanted from there (TWRP, custom rom, xposed, etc.)
(I couldn't find a mirror for my exact modem...... :s)
Hope this helps

Hi sorry I'm unaware of a rom named "infules v4", but I'd first would go flash stock OFW just to ascertain that its a software/modem fault, rather than a hardware fault.
For instance, me being in Australia and having an Optus sim card, I flashed the firmware package with the XXUHOJ3 Modem in it (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/62513/I9505XXUHOJ3_I9505OPSHOJ1_OPS/).
Assuming you downloaded: (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/57455/I9500XXUHOI1_I9500OJKHOI1_CEL/);
Open up ODIN and load the firmware to PDA/AP (depending on which version of ODIN you've got).
From there you can root, flash twrp, install "infules v4", and whatever other goodness you like
Note: Just whatever you do, make sure you do a nandroid backup prior

S7 Edge roms, twrp, etc

Hi everyone I'm new to samsung devices but definitely not to android in general since I come from years of htc devices, root, flashing and so on.. still I am facing a bit of confusion here so instead of writing in every single thread I'll ask you here my questions:
1. As I read on TWRP official thread "it's incredibly hard to brick a sam device"; anyway I understand that this is never a risk free process but reading the comments it seems like people on nougat firmware are facing some kind of trouble so my question is: Is it safe to flash twrp on nougat firmware? And which one? 3.1.1-0 latest version should be fine right?
2. Let's suppose I'm now on twrp but instead of rooting the stock rom I flash directly a custom rom, I still need to flash "dm-verity and force encryption disabler"? After some reading I see people that flashes this after every new rom, someone suggests to use 2.2 version but the latest is 5.xx and the content of the zips is different between this two versions (5.xx contains a chromeos folder, the other one no??)
3. "Update modem and bl" , this is meant for those who want to flash a rom based on a higher firmware right? I'm on the latest (may security update) so there's no need to update modem and bl at least I think (?)
That's all, I'm sorry for this long post and my bad english!

ELI5 What is the firmware that every custom ROM requires.

So as I took a look any rom that is not based on OOS requires us to flash the firmware. The first time I flashed a custom ROM I haven't done that yet everything was working fine. Could someone explain what those firmwares are, what is included in them and why are they necessary ?

The firmware is provided by oos and there's ota updates hence with the original based roms. They are mostly needed to provide latest drivers for the hardware like modem etc.

Oh so it was just a matter of time until I would find something breaking. Is it possible to dirty flash these firmwares or should I wait for ROM updates before doing that ?
