XZ2P camera lens cover scratched - Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Questions & Answers

Hi,
Basically the camera lens cover of my XZ2P is getting scratched more and more (idk why). My question is that are the scratches on the glass/plastic cover or is it on a coating covering the glass/plastic. If the latter is true, that would mean, I could potentially remove the coating and the camera cover would be unscratched, right?
Going to a service center is not an option as in my country they do not offer assistance with the XZ2P.
Please help.
Thank you

Hello,
If your scratch looks like this: https://i.redd.it/os2d7mzo2o621.jpg then is the coating. My camera started scratching out of the blue, i tought it is the glass but it was the coating.

Thanks for your reply! You helped me out a lot. Yes, it is the same thing only worse. What I do not understand is that even though the coating is getting messed up, the pictures are still coming out decent/normal. I am however concerned that if the coating gets totally ruined, the pictures will be messed up. I have seen some videos where people have taken their coatings off using spirits/alcohol but I am still unsure if I should do this since there will be no protection left!
Thanks again bro!

Mine is all gone and the picure quality does not seem to be afected. Did some tests in low-light/outside light/artificial light and the pictures are just fine. It is strange that 1000 usd phone is scratching so easy..

In Poland it's look like this:
My Xperia XZ2 Premium problem start with two small spot. Now it is one big blur. I send the phone to Sony's authorized service. I received the following information:
The diagnosis showed damage not covered by the free warranty service. A cost estimate was issued. Please contact the place of returning the device for repair (Salon / Shop / Authorized Service Center) in order to obtain information about the cost estimate. In the case of direct notification to Regenersis - please check the e-mail address and accept or reject the cost estimate.

I'm having this exact same issue with my XZ2P. Delamination of the camera glass coating. My issue occurred within 3-4 months of purchase. I have been without the phone for 2-3 months now while I argue with Sony UK and SBE (the authorised repair centre) about the fact that it's a defective materials issue and not physical damage as they keep claiming to avoid a warranty repair. They continue to refuse their contractual warranty obligations. They are demanding I pay an inspection fee to have it returned to me without the issue even repaired.
So frustrating that Sony expect to charge so much for a flagship device like this but not stand by and repair it when it's defective within months of purchase.
I've always looked after the phone, it's been in a case since opening the box and never dropped or had anything near the camera glass to cause a scratch. There's not a scratch on the thing. Just this frustrating blemish on the camera glass from the defective and delaminating coating.
No wonder Sony had to retrench from the world market with poor quality from a flagship device like this followed up with no support what so ever.

Thankfully there is a decent support staff member on the Sony mobile support forums that was finally able to resolve this dispute for me when multiple support staff at SBE UK and Sony UK refused to listen. Phone repaired under warranty and I'm now awaiting it's return.

Unbelievable but also not surprising, only had my XZ2 Premium back for a month post camera glass coating repair, and it’s already delaminating on the replacement housing. What a joke! How did Sony let such a bad design on an expensive flagship get through R&D? I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for the repair given this second materials failure in a short period of time. I’ll not be bothering with another warranty repair given the debacle last time. I’ll be stripping the coating off like others have done once it gets bad enough. So disappointed with Sony.

So the camera glass coating wore on my XZ2 Premium so badly in just a few months that the camera couldn't take a photo without being blurry with a white haze. I tried stripping the coating off with rubbing alcohol but it made the haze worse after completely removing the top layers. However I can confirm that polishing the camera glass with a fine cerium oxide compound removes all of the faulty coatings and binding layers from the glass so it's clear again. My XZ2 Premium can now thankfully take decent photos. It's a bit ridiculous that I had to go to such an extent to repair the phone myself to make the camera actually functional again. I certainly wasn't interested in fighting with Sony UK over a second warranty claim for such a poorly manufactured flagship device.

Hi,
This has happened to my XZ2 Premium and I'm not sure what to do. I have experienced Sony's/SBE's warranty repair process on a previous device and it was not a good experience so reluctant to send them my phone.
Can I ask how you used the cerium oxide? Does it need to be used with a small polishing wheel on something like a Dremel?
Many thanks in advance.

I guess you could contact the relevant Sony support email for your world region and explain the defect and the issues that other users have faced and see if they can guarantee a repair under warranty for you device and push the issue prior to sending it in for repair.
Failing that, I used the cerium oxide with a Drexel and felt polishing disk. I purchased carpro ceriglass as it’s a gentle formula you can use by hand on car windscreens. It did a good job, very minor surface swirls can be seen under the right light so I could go one step further with and ultra fine cerium oxide compound but the camera looks and works just fine. To protect the metal trim and glass back of the phone, I covered it with masking tape and used a clean sharp blade to cut out the hole around the camera glass before polishing. Makes clean up easier also. You need to keep working it a little bit at a time and keep the slurry wet and reapply as needed until you reach the result you’re after.
You can also up a replacement oem back housing from witrigs for a reasonable price. It’s a fairly straightforward swap out if you watch their repair videos, you just need to purchase the finger scanner sticker and lcd supporting frame sticker to put the phone back together properly with new adhesives.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I have submitted photos of the defect on my device to Sony UK support and awaiting their response.
Failing that I'll have to consider the cerium oxide option as replacement back covers in the uk are nearly £100!
Many thanks

This happened to mine, and it was accepted for repair under the warranty.

The Dreaded Newton's Rings

Hi all,
Well, my Topaz has just suddenly developed Newton's Rings
I have spoken to HTC, and like everyone else, HTC has said it won't be covered under warranty.
My question is, which part does the issue lie with? Is it the LCD or the digitizer?
Which ever it is, I am going to purchase, and repair myself, as I don't want to pay HTC $$$$ for something they should fix for free, and I also don't want to stop using my Topaz.
Thanks in advance!

"Newton rings", I love it!
I read that if you take duct tae and repeatedly pull the screen away from the digitizer, it fixes it.
HTC WILL cover this, they have done mine! I presume they only wont if it looks like your screen has been squashed/badly looked after, which mine isnt
Took about 5 days in total from sending it, they replaced the whole front for me.

I called customer support, and as soon as I mention Newton Rings, the lady said it wouldn't be covered under warranty. I told her that the phone is in immaculate condition, and she said there was no way for them to know if I caused the damage. Further to that, there is no service center in Australia, so I would need to send it overseas. Bi-directional, insured, international postage will cost more than just buying the parts and repairing it!
Thanks for the replies, however does anyone know the answer to my question? Is it the LCD or the Digitizer that is the cause?
Thanks again!
In short:
"I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but the cause of the "newton ring" effect as well as the broken touchscreen is quite simple.
Attached to the upper and lower protective layers in the digitizer of a resistive touchscreen, there are two layers of conductive film as well as a gap in between these. Here is a crude example:
----------- Protective layer
------ Conductive layer
Gap
------ Conductive layer
----------- Protective layer
When you touch the screen, the conductive layers press together and Y+X coordinates are calculated.
What can happen is that one of the conductive layers loses adhesion to the protective layer (most likely the upper one, closest to the screen surface). It'll then bubble outwards, thus causing the optical ring effect and likely also kill the touchscreen function.
There's alot of confusion as to whether this is caused by unproper handling by the user or if it's a defect in manufature. The answer is in fact, both. Some digitizers simply come out structurally weak, and break very easily (more easily than users normally expect). Many recent HTC devices seem to suffer from this. Storing the device in a tight pocket puts constant, long-term pressure on the screen and can be dangerous. But neither the manual nor the warranty conditions mention this, so it's not really the users fault."

I have read this, but I am still not 100% sure whether it was the digitizer, and ONLY the digitizer than is the culprit for the Newton Rings....
I haven't suffered this thankfully, but reading the descriptions I've had the feeling that moisture might be involved. Maybe in humid conditions moisture is getting between the two layers so they stick together? Some people have described what looks like an "oily film" sticking the surfaces together.
If it is moisture, perhaps it's condensation which forms when using the phone from cold - after all, it does get heated very rapidly from cold to almost body temperature, especially if it's kept in an outside pocket in winter.

I think you might be right, although the climate in Australia is not THAT cold, and it is summer here at the moment. I think the issue might be occurring from a poorly sealed unit. As far as I am concerned, condensation should not occur if a unit is sealed properly.... I have taken perfect care of my phone - it has never been wet, never been dropped, and is never out of it's protective case unless I am using it.
The duct tape method mentioned above got rid of the worst of the rings, that was stopping my typing the letter 'o' on the portrait keyboard (the 'o' was getting stuck down), but others have now appeared.
I have noticed that from work to home (about a 20 minute drive), if I sit the phone directly in front of the air conditioner, the rigs disappear for a while, so I think it is definitely a temperature based issue.
I think I will purchased a new digitizer, as I don't want another phone - I love my TD2. I might just take greater care of the temperature side of things (ie. remove it from it's case when charging etc), to keep it from getting too hot, although I don't think a device such as a phone should be this vulnerable.

We know it's not sealed properly because of the "dust under screen near volume buttons" issue.

The phone comes packaged in a clear plastic selophane sleeve and printed on the sleeve it says...
"Important
To prevent damage, do not apply excessive pressure to the screen or device case.
Please remove the device from your pants pocket before sitting down. For more details see the quick start guide."
In the quick start guide (Safety and other notices) under General Precautions it mentions again the above.
Most people dont read the manual in my experience.

I have NEVER exerted excessive force on my screen. I never even use the stylus, always the end of my thumb. If the amount of force I have been using on this screen is too much, then this should NOT be a touch phone, as all I have been doing is 'touching' it.

I have been told by HTC that they will not cover this. Unfortunately, even if they would, I am in Australia, and purchased my phone online. As such, I would need to send my phone overseas (to its country of delivery) in order to take advantage of the warranty. Once I tally up the shipping fees, including insurance, and the time I will be without my phone, it's really not worth it. I would sooner buy a new digitizer/LCD and repair it myself.
guys, could somebody tell me how durable is the "display" of my/ours TD2? display = housing, digitiser, LCD. I always carry my phone in a cover - e.g.

it is out of some "plastic leather" and it has probably hard paper inside on sides facing display and bottom cover.
I try not to be rough when "playing around" with my phone. But I do not use stylus all the time, but I try not tu punch the screen when using it. I carry it almost all the time in my jeans pocket - display facing outwards my body (preventing excessive pressure on it).
do you thing above listed "points" can prevent newton rings?
THX!!!!!!!!!!
My TD2 has developed newton's rings....
my TD2 has developed newtons rings....and the htc care tells me its water inside and screen needs to be replaced !!
can it be possible ?
i have to get a new screen anyways....can i make that for free dis time ?
HTC UK replaces screens affected by Newton Rings, whereas HTC Germany does not. I live in Germany but bought my phone in the UK. the day i got the newton rings, i called the HTC Germany support line (coz i live here) and the (very tech savvy) German on the help desk told me the following:
-certain countries cover Newton Ring damage IF the phone shows no major signes of misuse (ie. dropped, internal components cracked, etc)
-certain countries do NOT.
i asked why. He said that it's a politics thing and I should just be lucky that my phone wasn't bought in germany and that i have to send it to the UK. once i did, 5 working days (from Germany to UK and back!) and i had a new phone. they even threw in a stylus and a new cover foil, as well as a spare USB cable! lol.
i have so far only good things to report about HTC customer service myself...ever since my mTeOR! ...guess i've been lucky!

Back cover self cracked

Hi
So here I am, it just happened to me, the back cover of my Z2 self cracked ! I left it on a shelf, inside it's pouch (Adore June case), and when I took it a few minutes later, the back was all cracked.
The phone didn't fell, nio shock at all, nothing. Temperature was ambiant, about 20°c, without any big variations.
So I'd say, for a piece a of technology I bought exactly 555 € 2 month ago, it is just unbelievable, unacceptable !
It was my first Sony phone, and it will be the very last.
Other than that, I was really satisfied with it.....until it decides to harm itself !
Now the good part of the story is, when I contacted the seller, Purnima Digital, they oriented me to their warranty service, who reacted very well and fast. I was about to send them the phone, for free, for an expertise, but when I called them, they advised me to wait, because they already had hundreds of Z2 with the same issue, and for now Sony hadn't accepted to repair under warranty !!!!
They told me they were negotiating with Sony, with the help of a consumers association, to make Sony accept their production deffective issues.
So voilà my story with Sony. I will keep you informed about the outcome, hopefully Sony will take their responsibility.
As soon as I will have my Z2 repaired, first thing I will sell it. And never again I will hear about Xperia phones !
I have a Z2 Tablet, which for now is very well and doesn't seem to want to Crack it self,.....
I have a IPhone 5s for the work, and i will stick to it now. no matter what we think about Apple vs Android, at least I will not have these problems with the 5s.
Good luck with yours !

I think you had bad luck my friend,my Z2 is without any gaps and any other problems so only bad luck.

I'm perfectly happy with my Z2 that I bought right after it was released in my country in May. I have had no issues with it whatsoever and it's still without a scratch even without a case. That being said, if you have accidentally left your phone in direct sunlight it could cause the backplate to crack due to heat. If that is not the case then you've been really unlucky and for that I empathize with you. Good luck with your phone and whatever you choose to do with it if/when you get it back.
In that case here is the next question..what kind of glass is the back + the front one? It would be nice if they start making dragontrail glass for the back at least... :/ Ive heard that many Z Z1 Z2 users suffer that problem.Im quite affraid for mine too :/

Yep ; FYI, i had put on the back the NILKIN plastic film provided when you purchase the Tempered glass pack for the front panel....i was sure the back didn't need a tempered glass as well, and i was confident the plastic one would be OK, knowing the phone will be in a case...
Well now i know that it was not sufficent at all.
It was surely bad luck for me with this unit, even if there are many other users in the same position, but anyway i advise you all to put a tempered glass protection on the back as well.
The anti shatter film was better than any tempered glass protection.
Due to it's malleability impacts get softened.
Replacing the back is pretty cheap <$20 and easy though. Good thing it's not the front...Cost me 100 to buy a replacement LCD.
My screen self cracked yesterday.
After about 30 minutes I had an rma filed with a label on the way, hopefully the techs can see this wasn't an issue of "accidental damage " instead a fault in the design.
Hoping it's fixed and sent back!

My screen cracked itself, too - Sony Germany refused the warranty!
I hope they will get this sorted, soon! It's unacceptable!!
My Z2 has faulty back cover also. It's not cracked, but is not glued properly so the edge near the USB port kinda pops out. I can press and it sticks back but then it pops out again after a while. I doubt it's waterproof. The phone is less than one month old.

This is that kind of phone that needs a case 100% if you want it to be protected and safe for a longer period of time. ( I am from that kind of persons that are using the phone naked (its a damn Z series..u took the phone for its classy look too,but here i can't risk anymore :/ )) Screen protectors from both sides wont save it too.Ive read alot and..too much ppl complaining from cracked Z2s.Too sad that Sony didn't put a Dragontrail/Corning Gorilla..front and back glass.
The back glass on mine self-cracked. It has been in a case since an hour after I received the phone. It sits most of the day on my desk at work, or on the kitchen bench at home. Last week I discovered a single crack across the back panel.
I took it to the Telstra shop and they said Sony will not accept warranty claims for physical damage. I am going to follow up with Sony as this sounds ridiculous. The phone is not fit for purpose. None of the smartphones nor PDAs I have had (going back 14 years now) have ever suffered any damage or cracks.

it doesn't??? OMG that sucks!!! even an original Sony one?
Had my Z2 self crack also the other day... used it and it was fine, checked back half an hour later and the screen was shattered. The shatter pattern is very similar to the pics posted at the beginning of this thread except mine is on the digitizer. It's obviously not from an impact/drop (I know this because I didn't drop it and the chassis is unmarked) but more so because of the pattern of the crack, no bullseye or spiderweb. Even more so because the phone wasn't moved during the time when it cracked....
Needless to say I was extremely annoyed, luckily I had the in box screen protector on so it didn't leave shards of glass all over the place. Just need to decide what to get next, does seem like this is an issue with only a few Z2's, my gf and sister have z2's which theyve dropped god knows how many times and their glass is unmarked, mine on the other hand has never been dropped. Anyway not sure whether to just wait for the Z3 instead of getting another Z2 (don't think I could live without a waterproof phone so that eliminates pretty much everything apart from Sony)
I am from Croatia. My first Z2 was foulty too. It was heating quickly, back glass cracked, wather demaged microfon and wather was all around camera. At first after 5 days I sent it service repair refused to change the phone claiming that this was physical damage. Then I asked for explanation and yelled on them and then they called me after 3 weeks to tell me that they are going to give me new one after long consultation with Sony in Europe.
With this new Z2 I don't have any problems and no quick heating.

Water droplets under camera lens

Here we go again.. I just sent out an email to Sony Singapore about how water droplets suddenly appeared under my camera lens and LED flash, and I can already guess they'll accuse me of not closing my flaps and how its all my fault..etc even though its obvious enough (due to the fact my SIM, USB port, and sdcard are perfectly working) and the whole phone works fine other wise.
So instead of having to bring it all the way down to Sony only to leave with a bad experience because they'll probably insist it was my fault instead of acknowledging a factory defect or flaw in their design, are there any possible solutions to rid of the water? I just tried the 4K video recording while opening the flaps and letting the phone heat up. While the phone does get extremely hot the water underneath doesnt seem to get any lesser the least bit.
Tonight I'm gonna try leaving all flaps open overnight in my air conditioned room where its dry and hopefully see improvements. If not, for all your victims out there, how long does it take for the water under the lens to completely dry up? And what the odds of it happening again?

I talked to guys in my region that sent their Z2 for warranty repair with similar problems and Sony replaced (or repaired) their devices under warranty without any problems.

Lucky them. Perhaps it even depends on the specific store/service center you go to. I've heard countless people saying how Sony kept insisting they never ensured the flaps were closed, or how such "water damage" is not covered by warranty and therefore will not be entertained unless they are willing to pay for repairs. This usually results in frustration of the customers because there's really no way to prove to Sony that the flaps were closed in the first place. Bottomline: Sony's customer service sucks.
I'll wait for their reply and see how it all plays out. To be honest I'll be quite surprised if they agree to repair or replace my device just like that without much trouble.

Yes, I totally agree. But I'd insist Sony repair my device for free, you're legit after all. You could try to send the device for a water leakage test, Sony claimed to do it for free per users request.

Thats good, so my only worrying part is will they find anything wrong during the leakage test. If they dont, then im screwed. Because for the most part, the entire phone including the camera is working perfectly normal, in fact I didnt even know I had water under the lens until i happened to look at it. Thats why my guesses are the leakage came from the lens not being a perfect seal on the body, and that has nothing to do with the flaps. If sony's leakage test also includes the sealant of the lens and flash then I should be safe.

Yes, I'm sure they test the whole device under water.
Theres a small colored paper inside our Z2 that determines if the phone came from water damage. That small sheet changes color if its really a water damage.
Sent from my D6503 via Tapatalk Pro
Day 2 and im happy to report the LED flash water has dried up overnight, but the lens has quite a lot more by the time I woke up this morning. Its now night and about half of the droplets behind the lens has already disappeared. I just left my flaps open and elevated the phone in such a way where by the camera portion has enough breathing room. Looks like I wont have to go back to Sony.
Anyway, this was the reply I got from them this morning in case anyone was wondering. Kind of expected this sort of response.

had the same Problem with my Xperia Z! it went away after a while.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/help/camera-waterdamaged-t2598648
Water damage due to user error is not covered under warranty, however water leakage with flaps closed is. They will test the device in lab and it will be replaced under warranty if it's not sealed properly.
I've repaired my Xperia Z in Bishan before for same problem. Go over and talk to them. They will do a test and determine the cause of it.
Its dried up completely, pictures all came out ok. No need to go down to Sony anymore, phew!
told ya
glad it worked out!
I have experienced the same problem and my Z2 is not fully dry yet! I'm sure I've closed everything before putting it in cold water while it was so hot outside, at first when I saw the water drops inside camera I thought it was a problem! I left it open overnight too and I've got the same result! The water was still there! In fact, this is caused by the air inside the phone as Air contains water. When air or water around the phone containing cold substance, comes in contact with the phone, it gets condense and this is forming water droplets on it.
Yeah... it takes 1-3 days to fully dry.
Putting it in a bowle of dry rice might help.

You know that girls use hair dryer to dry their hairs. You can also use hair dryer. Just blow hair dryer on the camera and in moments moisture inside camera will disappear. You must take care not to blow dryer for too long. I hope this will solve your problem, as it solves mine.
Don't use hairdryer and stuff.. It will only affect more to your device. Put it in a bag of rice, submerge the phone with all your flaps open. Don't put it too under, just the surface. Do this for atleast 2-3 days. Or just in the night when you sleep. It will suck all the moisture and your camera will be fine. Foggy lens is an issue of water entering the phone's camera through a hole either from headphone jack or microphone hole in the top. Your phone might not be waterproof anymore. So be careful about that. Better give it to Service center and get it fixed if your phone is under warranty..
I have experienced the same issue. I believe that it's simple physics - when you submerge humid air trapped in the case suddenly into cool water, vapor condensates on cool surface - in this case camera lens. It might take a while to disappear again. My solution was to put phone on something warm (tv set-top-box) with camera facing down and flaps open to vaporize the condensation, then left phone in room temperature with flaps open for few hours. Users with hot and humid air might be more prone to this issue than those in cold and dry environment.

Z2 camera scratches easily

I have my Z2 so 2months and I'm beggining to see some scratches on the rear camera in direct light. There are no problems in making pictures tho. I'm really careful with my device too.

PS: Don't rub hard or you break the lens glass.

6 months old and did not have a single scratch. That is anti ultraviolet coating. Wipe it out and everything is fine.

Havent noticed difference in the pictures in daylight tho.

Some people use toothpaste and it works good but..
Like someone said earlier it's there for a purpose. It's the anti-reflective coating and when you will rub it off the quality of photos will deteriorate in direct light, no question about that. It won't be that much visible but you should know about that before you do it, not after.
Any way sony could fix that for us? Or someone tried to give his Z2 to sony centre and get an replacement camera glass? (btw the picture u gave is zoomed only not taken with/without ar coating. And about cleaning it..im too afraid that i could scratch the glass itself.
Just read abit for that problem. It occurs to every phone with AR coating camera glass and the problem is that the lens is exposed to excessive amount of sun light of heat, the AR coating will start cracking itself cos of the hight temperature.Lots of users reproted that the AR coating started to flake off and their pictures began to get blurry.Cleaning the lense glass with alcohol will do the job and bring the sharpness to your pictures, but will affect the light influence in the pics. I will personaly try giving my phone for repair/replacement.

Sony doesn't want to repair this (they say it's a user fault - bad usage of phone) just like HTC (One M8 have a much bigger issue with this coating on One M8).
To repair this you need to replace back panel, lens cover is integrated.

That's not entirely true. Every good camera lenses have this coating. After long usage it may start to flake if it's poor quality. Another reason may be bad treating with chemicals.
In smartphone department quality of this coating is not as good (in most cases whole smartphone is cheaper than proper camera lenses). When there is some problem at manufacturing stage (like in One M8) or just very poor quality control (Z, Z1, Z2, compacts all have this problem) we see that this coating starts to flake very early. Sony and HTC should repair this, but they can say that you used chemicals cleaning your phone and destroyed it yourself and you can't do much about it.
Heat from excessive amount of sun light can be a reason too, but mostly in sunglasses left in direct sunlight for too long. In camera lenses (standalone or smartphone) destroyed coating is a result of bad manufacturing and bad usage, MOSTLY - not always of course.

I guess the only thing i can do is to wipe it off and deal with it than.No guarantee that if i get an replacement (which wont happen) the ar coaing wont flake off again. :silly: Strange is that i have an ZR as well - dived in salt water and stuff with it and the coating its perfectly fine..

I had the exact issue on my Z tho.
Ok.Just to share with you guys.Ive removed the AR coating (or what was left of it) and the glass is crystal clear now , as the pictures i made from now on.They are sharp without distorsion and noise or blury. It helped me alot. The only disatvantage is that if direct sunlight fell on an object that you want to snap.It will get abit blurry, shiny. But there is a fix for that too.If you want to focus that object, just zoom abit, step closer to it,or fix the exposure of the picture before taking it.These things will do the job perfectly.Cheers.
I used a dab of toothpaste and a cotton swab. Took the scratched and blurry coating off without damaging the camera lens. Rinse afterward. I would advise against using any harsh chemicals.

Sony does repair it! Got my back panel replaced with a new one, got my phone today only, it's as good as new!
I had the same problem, took it to the service centre, they submitted it and gave back an almost new (with back panel replaced) phone in just 6 days. So please don't reach any conclusion before you try the proper way.
Thanks.

In Poland Sony doesn't repair it and it didn't repair in Z or Z1 as well. In most cases at forums people have problems with warranty repair this too so maybe you are the chosen one?
Had the same thing & had some kind of stains that i think were caused by water, even ruined the quality in daylight :\ fixed it by rubbing shampoo on the lens "sounds silly but it actually worked "
The same for me and maybe worse.. BUT THEY DISAPPEARED AFTER FEW MONTHS LATER!!

Beware EBay and Swappa Resellers with S7 Active

All,
I've noticed a startling trend by the resellers of cell phones for the S7 Active.
The S7 Active has a two-layer screen - the top layer is supposed to be replaceable if it crackes, thereby saving you a expensive repair.
Unfortunately, these scrupulous resellers are removing this second layer, exposing the screen itself, which is much more fragile.
You can tell this in listings by looking to see if the earpiece speaker and buttons look "raised" in the pictures provided. They should be nearly flush if the second layer piece is in place.
For example, Swappa has a seller in NY right now that is selling "mint" S7 Actives, and all of his phones have the second layer of the screen removed. Samsung no longer sells this second layer, so you would have to put down a tempered layer to help protect the screen, and even then there are no guarantees it will provide the proper protection.
Buyer beware, just a FYI.
Chris
I just bought one of these and I can confirm that the outer screen is removed. I'm returning it now and will update with what the seller has to say. I wish I had your sharp eye and noticed this in the pictures, looking back it is noticeable.
I bought it 8 days ago. Didn't even notice it. I'm. Just going to buy a tempered glass above it. Too lazy to deal with it now, I'm overall satisfied with the phone.
That's good to be aware of, but not really a deal breaker, or wouldn't be for me. I leveraged the tendency of the factory screen protector to scratch to purchase a cheap phone off e-bay. I'd find the one with the worst looking screen with okay looking everything else then when I got the phone, removed the plastic layer and replaced it with glass. That was a year ago and I've been happy ever since.
My point is that those thick plastic protectors would look like crap not long after purchase so you are better without them. The glass is still gorilla, the edges of the screen are raised into a lip to protect it and you can add a sacrificial glass protector yourself. If the price is cheap, I'd buy one.
I think it all comes down to what your expectations are of "like new" or "mint". Personally, I would want the factory second layer that has the proper material for protection. I returned a phone on eBay as it was listed as brand new - literally "new in box". Lots of resellers out there taking advantage.
missing layer
Thanks for the heads up. I wouldn't have known any better if I hadn't come across this post. I bought one off ebay from the seller emb-phones which shipped out of Brooklyn, New York. I can also confirm the phone is missing the second layer mentioned in this first post of this forum. I would like you share pics but i guess i haven't hit the 10 post requirement yet :/. I'll come back and figure out a way to post pics some other time.
Qualitycells on Swappa is selling their Mint condition S7 Actives without the factory protector. I've contacted them about my device, not really hopeful that they will do anything though.

I returned the phone I received without the outer screen. My concern is it may affect the water-proofing and it is against Swappa rules to sell a modified phone. They should at least admit it and let the buyer make an informed decision. I asked "QualityCells" if they could provide an unmodified phone and they could/would not. They did give me a full refund and paid return shipping. Unfortunately Swappa did not seem interested that one of their sellers is doing this. It wasted a lot of my time.
Here's an example.

Discussion with ebay seller about this issue...
Thanks for bringing this to light; I recently bought an S7 Active from an eBay seller much like emb-phones (in this case syncelectronic), and found that the screen layer had indeed been removed. At least the glass underneath was in perfect condition! I brought this to their attention and they claimed to not realize this as they buy them at auction in quantity; they asked what they can do and I said I wanted them to refund me $11.99 so I can get a tempered glass protector to install in place of the polycarbonate that was removed, and that they change their ad to reflect that this protective layer has been removed.
Other than that, the phone was indeed in the condition described, and I would have put a screen protector on anyway, but I DO wish the ad reflected that actual situation, so we will see what they come back with.
I got one also from eBay, i paid $110 for it with NEW screen thats missing the second layer but hey, it works fine, i've added the tempered glass on top and a discrete cover and its a great phone.. Sure u have to be careful about dropping it but isnt that with 99% of phones these days? I tried finding a OEM replacement screen for this phone but no luck and the screen is the phone so if you get a pink line or 'store display model' shadow burn in then the phone is garbage. I really liked my S5 Active, its smaller and screen size is the same as S7 but unfortunately, it stops on 6.0.
To sum this up, its a hit or miss with these, if the seller is honest and the LCD is clean, then you get a great phone for a tenth of its original price. My S7 Active works well so far, i work outside and sweat a lot here in Florida and the phone is exposed to sand and lots of moist sweat and no issues for the past 4 months, even with the 1/2 screen on it.
can we see pictures of what you mean?
no ****... look at what I found...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4LUgs5jYkI
I believe when I bought mine, it was in mine shame... but had a layer missing. No worries- tampered glass protector solves the problem.
Interesting... Just bought an S7 Active on eBay for $60, let's see if it has the layer...
LCD + Digitizer (Gorilla Glass 4) + Protective Polycarbonate Layer!
Buy a phone with a scratched poly layer, remove it, add a 9H screen protector.
This isn't rocket science.
Geeesh ... Panic and mayhem over a stupid poly layer ..... S8 Active has the same treatment, and Gorilla Glass 5.
https://www.cio.com/article/3079219/hardware/samsungs-new-water-resistant-galaxy-s7-active-survives-severe-crash-tests.html
https://www.slashgear.com/galaxy-s8-active-has-a-plastic-screen-protector-on-top-of-gorilla-glass-25516999/
You don't get it. It isn't "panic" about missing a screen protector, it's misleading the buyer. That is why I posted this months ago.
If a screen layer was originally removed, it was either cracked or scratched beyond belief. To me, that means the phone had a rough life.
If you spend $50 on a S7 active and the layer is missing, I wouldn't care. But if a seller advertises "NEW" (unused) old stock, and that layer is missing, that is a problem. THAT is why I posted this.
Have a great day, UnableToResetOldProfile.

Thank you for your insight!
I recently bought a refurbished device that was advertised as having a perfect 10/10 screen, but is clearly missing the outer layer, and the screen is showing random pink line as well that comes and go. Without your post, I would have I never understood how the LCD could have been damaged while the screen doesn't shows any scratches at all. Contacting them now for a replacement now!
