Razer Phone 2 root? - Razer Phone 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi, I'm Roland, long time lurker, first time poster. I really want to buy a Razer Phone 2 but I need root. There seems to be a lack of support and /or interest here at xda so I looked around and found this guide. Hoping someone can verify that it works before I buy. Thanks in advance for your time.

Root is not available yet. Razer needs to release the factory images first. That guide will soft brick the device (no doubt just getting views for ads).
Razer has said nothing that indicates they won't release them, so they'll be around soon but you may want to hold off on buying it until they do if root is important to you.

Thank you for your expertise. Looks like it's the ASUS ROG for me then.
Maybe someone should delete this before anyone tries that method?

HP ZEEN 7"ANDROID TAB comes with printer c510a

Good day
Let me start with a little background info. I had an eris and now Dx since well before they were rooted. I follow the forums here daily as I am an admitted gadget junkie;-) Well anyway I thought I kept up with most of the upcoming tech news but this slipped right by me. Happened to see it while wondering aimlessly in bestbuy yesterday. Of course I bought it. You all prolly already know about this product but just in case you didn't I just wanted to let my favorite devs on the best forums in on it. Hopefully you're all due for a printer upgrade. In case you don't figure it out the 7" detachable touchscreen printer interface has android 2.1 on it already. I've already figured out how to put alot of my own apks on it but maybe you guys will have ideas I could try on it Really need some market action on this thing. So check it out and have a good day.
http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/printer/Photosmart/1/storefronts/CQ140A%23B1H
I agree with you on the fact that it needs the market on there, but this was released well over 2-3 months ago. A lot has been written about it that it MIGHT get 2.2 and/or more upgrades come 2011, but that was also right before HP bought Palm and committed to WebOS.
I haven't found much information at all on it? Mine is offering to update rite now but I'm holding off until I learn more about it. I want to root it of course. I've already tried androot Z4root and dmupdater with no luck. If anyone could guide me through dumping the right info off it maybe we could get a recovery. I have learned that it's manufactured by foxconn, same company that has manufactured every "i" device apple has ever put out. Anyway hope there's enough interest in the device for some development
Amen brother... I can't wait for someone to sink their teeth into this thing and open up the potential...
Partial Root
I managed to load z4 root successfully, and could then load on various other .apk's. No market though. Once all of the HP junk was removed, it performed quite well.
Debug?
What did this do to your printer? Were you able to develop/debug to the zeen? I can't get the ADB to recognize it.
hey guys im a new user to this damn zeen i have an evo, so i was trying to get the market on this thing but no luck, have you been able to pull it off yet??
Anyone know a good alternative market to use on this, or how to get the official?
try app brain and let me know how it goes!!
I've added a Dev Thread for this at http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi since barak now has this device....
you wont get adb due to it being turned off in the kernel.

Android 3.1 Port

Has anyone tried porting the Android 3.1 system.img from the SDK to the A500 yet?
I want to say it was sp3dev that tried flashing the xoom 3.1 images and ended up bricking his tablet, so note sure if anyone has tried it again.
I'm thinking of having a gom but I only just got this tablet today. Is there a recovery ROM image that I can use to reflash the tablet in case of brickage?

No recovery yet as the bootloader is still locked.
Acer will issue an official update in the next couple of weeks, so why risk it? There's no rush.
Bragging rights......jk
I actually would like a clean system.img without the Acer bloatware too.
You can use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14076075&postcount=2
to fully restore to stock US.
I recommend that 'how to' for recovering the tablet be placed in the HOW TO thread, and that thread be stickied.

Me? No, it was not me. Meh, i don't care for ****roid and the only thing i want to flash is a proper distro like ubuntu or fedora.
Would be interesting to see what the logcat dump produced to try and work out the incompatibilities.

+1 on that...if acer sticks to a June time frame of getting 3.1 to us then it would be a better deal...thats just around the corner and there will be less bugs getting an update (at least i hope so) from the maufacturer then trying to port it from a different device. compared to the g-tab that i had...this thing runs pretty dam good with stock rooted Rom and bloatwate removed...once we get official 3.1 update with mouse and additional peripheral support...then thats gonna make that much sweeter.

One thing to think before
Same for me once I removed those crap apps from Acer.I guess Acer will never learn about putting their own apps to blingbling the whole tablet. I don't need slow beautiful tablet I need an overboosted one They build slow PCs, they build slow laptops, slow tablets and I guess slow mobiles phones too and once you make a clean instal on it, oooohhhhh wonder its works like a rocket ------->>>>>>>>>
I guess it s marketing ... selling slow things so that people buy a new one earlier.
And then the other trouble that I m expecting to come......
I m not sure about it but in some threads they telling that if some apps are missing on
our tablet update won't work.
Ok, we know how to revert back to original Acer tablet and do the update to remove again those crap apps again wth....????
Atleast it s not nessecary to hack Acer laptop and PC to instal windows again.
What we need is bootloader from Acer or from a Dev if Acer won't, updates are secondary.
I don t trust them since they could make updates to prevent installing custom roms like
Apple with their never ending we need to block jailbreaking attempts
So be careful about those updates........
3.1 original
I would wait for 3.1, the problems of getting it from another tab would not be worth it.
It should be here hopefully this week sometime!!!
It has been reported that if your device was EVER rooted you wont have access to Google movies on market...even after factory reset/flashing stock rom...fyi this was on xoom. Not sure how much truth there is to this, but I'm not chancing it.

Being fearful is the safer option... but you really should think this through clearly. How would they know if your tablet has EVER been rooted? Do they store the information on their servers? If so, what about when someone buys your tablet second hand? Are they denied from the movie market forever? Is the tablet forever "poisoned"?
The above scenario is the only way they could know as all traces of being rooted can easily be removed from the tablet itself... that is the nature of having root after all; total control.
Again, if you are fearful or uncertain, do not do anything to your tablet. Please do not spread your fear amongst others though because someone will soon be quoting you and claiming that "they" can tell if your tablet has ever been rooted. As you have already said, " It has been reported that...". Reported by whom? There is no answer. Did they verify the mechanism that testifies that the tablet has EVER been rooted? There is no answer.
It is fine to ask a question but as soon as you say, "it has been reported", then you are spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Bad newbie. No cookie for you.

Post is on Droid Life...what I consider a reputable source. I cant post links yet. Go to site and search for "xoom google movies" Its second post down. I'm no noob...rooted many phones and tabs...just new too posting here. Sorry I did not provide link initially
Since Google Movies is about the most expensive way of watching video currently available, I'm not at all concerned over their decision to block rooted devices.
I've wondered this before about cell phones and tablets. I figured it would be more of a carrier thing, wanting to keep everyone in check on device warranties. The capability is certainly there on a carrier based device to simply track the sw version (mods) and root status. I figured it would come up at some point when there was a compelling enough reason for someone to make decisions based on that info. Hopefully it will be limited to content providers, such as in this case. I don't know that there is a need for fear and panic, just more for us all to think about before rooting. I thought about this before rooting my first phone, but also decided that rooting was a better way to avoid bloatware, etc. Until they cut my service for rooting, I'll always seek a better experience on my phone or tablet. Apparently there has been no compelling business reason for them to do that as of yet. Movie licensing is understandable, I'm 100% behind copyright protections. Just one more consideration before rooting a tablet.

Unlock bootloader for Fire HD 8 6th Gen

I just got couple Fire HD 8 6th Gen tablets for my kids, and thought I'd flash them right away with a custom ROM. I was quite disappointed with the absence of development for this tablet.
Anyway, as far as I understood from reading the forum (and I just started, sorry if I missed something), the first problem is the factory locked bootloader. And it sounded from a post I read like it's something that cannot be solved: http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/help/rooted-boot-img-t3508316 (bootloader locked discussion starts at the bottom of the 1st page).
Well, I am definitely not a pro in mobile development (I work on server side software for living), so I beg your pardon if I'm wrong. But unlocking a locked bootloader is not something unheard of.
So, I was wondering, if it could be done for other device, then probably it can be done for this one too. And the fact that it has not been done yet could mean for example, that this device is somehow different. Or, it could mean that there was no one yet with enough expertise AND the device at hand to do it.
So if the latter is true, and it's just lack of attention from good developers. Then I guess it could be arranged to donate a device to a reputable XDA dev. A dev that would be interested in having a challenge. And a free device.
I would definitely pitch in, and if you would too, please tell. And if you know an XDA dev who has expertise to do it, please tell too, and give an example of their work.
All the above is open for discussion of course, constructive suggestions would be much appreciated.
The 7" is locked but got a lot of love and is now rootable. If the guys at Kingroot that interest, we might see something but otherwise not. Until rooted, not much point porting a ROM.
So I suppose the proposition is to send a device to KingRoot guys?
...in China.....
I was wondering how the issue of locked encrypted bootloader was solved for other Fire devices. Here's how it's been done for Fire HDX 8.9: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...bootloader-unlock-procedure-software-t3030281 . I suppose the bug used in this method has been fixed already, this is just a demonstration that it can be done.
That was cracked using a crypto bug. Basically exploiting a weakness in the RSA encryption of the bootloader's signature. It's incredibly rare for encryption to get totally broken like this, and easily patched with system updates. Kinda got lucky on that one. Best thing to hope for first is root, then try to find a way around the bootloader's protection. These keep getting exponentially harder, and there's a lot more money on developing protections than breaking them.
I received one as a gift. I will probably never use it unless its opened up.... i mean im appreciative that someone gifted me it. But I become really upset by the fact that samsung and amazon... all the big players really lock up their bootloader and force me onto some ecosystem when i know the tablet or device could work just so much better. Anyways, if there is anything i can contribute let me know...
Download the Kingroot App then run it. After running it once or twice it will ask you to send a device request. Root may eventually be achieved for the 6th Gen but that may be as far as it gets. Very unlikely that the bootloader will be unlocked. Amazon actively puts a lot of effort into keeping them locked. Its been a while since any newer version of these Fire bootloaders have been unlocked. The HD 8 5th Gen is about 2 years old and the only thing thats been achieved was root and that was done by Kingroot..... But hey nothings impossible....

Did anyone buy a Razer 2?

I think a few of us did, but I'm returning mine. The quality and community just isn't there.
I have it. I am digging it. Hoping the community gets a little stronger but if not, I am still happy. FTR, I am rocking a Pixel 3 XL and a One Plus 6T as well.
I got it, loving it so far.
I have one, and am loving it as well. But the accessory community is depressing, especially with what seems available for the 1. Still, holding out hope yet....
Few days ago I went to 3 shop in the UK with intention of choosing between Pixel 3 XL, Note 9 and Mate 20Pro. But just one look at this beauty changed my mind. It has been years since I have seen android phone design I really liked. I hope that accesories will become available but it is not a deal braker for me. I ordered green case from razer as for the rest I do not care that much. I use magnetic holder for a car so nothing changes here. Bluetooth headset you can choose whatever you like. Actualy only case is phone specific acessory for me nowadays...
Coming from razer 1
This phone is amazing
Since razer 1, the advances are:
* Vibration motor actually works as you'd expect
* Camera, specifically with GCam is outstanding compared to Razer 1 (same Sony lenses as Pixel 3 - we have big potential.)
* Waterproof, bonus
* Screen slightly but evidently brighter
* Loudspeaker incall volume is louder/clearer
* Speakers are just as loud and true as Razer 1
* The overall speed enhanced with 845cpu, not that the Razer 1 was a slug, it was actually the fastest user experience until this Razer 2.
Honestly, all that marketed placebo they place on us with the big shot companies doesn't phase me... This phone is unprecedented. If you know tech and don't buy a phone based on the quality of its camera facility like most folk, then this is the connoisseurs choice.
Forget the development community, it didn't exist on Razer 1, not do I expect it to here. However it's not needed. The phone is already 99% stock without bloat.
The phone is G.O.A.T

While I do not really expect huge custom ROM support, a reliable root method that doesn't trip safetynet (and thus still allows android pay) would be enough for me to buy it.

And TWRP and Xposed of course
As for custom ROM stuff, it seems to be off to a good start. No need to be plugged in to get into fastboot anymore. It's actually surprisingly easy to get the button combo right (Vol- and Pwr). The bootloader even has an unlock menu option so the bootloader can even be unlocked without a PC involved! I've never seen that before lol. It bodes well. I did kernel dev for some of my previous devices so I'm really eager for those sources. Hopefully they keep up that end of the bargain.
I think I'm getting one, just want to see it and the OnePlus 6T in person before I decide. Any thoughts on how long it will take to get root? That's pretty important to me, but not having it right away isn't a problem.

It becomes possible but difficult when kernel sources drop, and pretty much guaranteed when factory images become available, provided Razer didn't make any significant security enhancements to stock Android (unlikely though). Razer released the sources fairly soon after the first one released, but that's not a guarantee.
EDIT: come to think it's possible earlier if someone manages to capture an OTA with a kernel image. I didn't think of that while unboxing and just let it update
EDIT2: Managed to coax bootloader to switch back to old slot so I can take the OTA again. Or brick it. Will see I guess
One point against Razer for the bootloader still being a finicky, terrifying mess. At least it's easier to get into now...
EDIT3: OK capturing the OTA not going so well before the device is set up cause ADB is not available and its downloaded through a verified SSL connection. Will have to wait for the next one

Unfortunately not much can be done while setting it up since the wizard's response to trying to get past the update screen is a firm "YOU SHALL NOT PASS". The ota link can potentially be captured only on a fully set up phone through ADB or a bug report. So we have to wait for the next OTA or a source/image drop from Razer if we want to root safely.

I was just commenting on the ease of unlocking which is usually a prerequisite. I'm not saying there's already dev going on, just that the device seems like a good candidate
I've got one. I think it's great! Haven't unlocked the bootloader or anything yet. For me, the battery life has been very impressive. I don't have a ton of apps, nor do I game really, but I can easily get it to last 2 days with 4 hours of Screen On Time and several hours of phone calls with 20% battery left.

No, I did not. I originally tried using an older SIM that I had in my previous phone & the phone worked... but txts would not come through. When I finally relented and tried to use the BYOD wizard on verizonwireless.com--the website said I needed a new SIM for my phone.
So, I brought my Razer Phone 2 to the Verizon Store (this is a day or two after Verizon had certified the phone). The Verizon Rep, who was assisting me, brought out a handful of sim cards and tried scanning each one with a handheld scanner. It took several tries, but she found one that I'm assuming their system would accept and then I was good to go. Based on my observations, it looks like the phone requires a pretty-specific SIM card for Verizon's system to activate it.
Doubt this helps you though.

Razer Phone 2 Audio Source Now Available + Developer Feedback Request

Hello developers of XDA!
I'm Rox, a Razer Vanguard and i'm here to let you know that the Audio Source is now available for the Razer Phone 2! You can now find the complete source code on the Razer Developers website here
I'm glad you all now have access to the full open source material and we can finally see some movement on the custom development we all know from Android
I would also like to take this opportunity to ask the developers of XDA for some feedback. Is there anything stopping people in particular supporting the device in the community with custom ROM's and Kernels? And is there anything that Razer could do to help?
This is by no means any assurance but I will gather all your feedback and pass it on.
The community is the most important thing to a product and I will continue to raise the communities voice as much as possible.
Thank you so much for the time!

What's a Razer Vanguard?
It's like their tech support reps, except they're a little more involved. Already dealt with one on their site, and he was very helpful and responsive. Most replies were within just a couple hours. Seems like these guys actually use the hardware they support, and don't treat the users like idiots. Nice to see this, especially since they just laid off most of their phone division. Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come. This phone is a beast.

That is essentially it! Thank you for the kind words, I'll be sure to pass it on to the team. We definitely do use the hardware we help with and for me personally the Razer Phone is my specialty but we all have experience with most Razer products.
I think there are two main things I would like to see:
1. Earlier factory images and the release of ota updates. It would be nice for those who have yet to get pie, for example.
2. Though I realize it's unlikely, the release of the device tree would really be a big boost to rom and kennel development
I second earlier factory image and source releases.
On another note. The sources we have currently had a lot of header/build issues. As other Devs have pointed out(elsewhere) this was probably due to the sources being built out of the device tree but they still seemed weird as I've never seen that before and can't make out how a device tree would have changed that. Would it be too much to ask that some time be taken to scrub the sources better and maybe even have some basic build scripts or instructions? I realize this is contrary to my first point but it's the next best thing to a device tree.
It would be nice to get full android 9 images the same as android 8.1
I still do not understand - why there is no support for aptx, aptx hd, ldac?!!!
And you can't even install it like on most other phones, maby razer developers know how fix it?
Also, due to a strange signature system, most gsi roms do not work.
How about Razer Phone 1?
Now I'm not a gamer, just got a used RP1 from a moderator on the Swedroid forum quite by accident, as it were.
I really quite like it, the Sharp IGZO screen especially, same as on my Xiaomi Mi Mix1, which was the main reason I got it.
I have had zero problems with it so far.

I was informed this is how all new MSM kernels are - they don't build properly out of the AOSP tree (it looks like Android's build system supplies some additional flags to the kernel make system to make it use some prebuilts and AOSP headers over the kernel-provided ones). I don't think this is unique to Razer, since it's a Qualcomm thing.
I've got build instructions for the kernel in my thread too if you need them.
Of course, I could be relaying incorrect information but this does seem like it's typical of Google/Qualcomm to be changing Open Source projects to fit their internal needs...

Can you guys get in contact with CurtisMJ on this forum and see about implementing his amazing Chroma logo alternative app, integrating features of it with the current Chroma logo app, or otherwise allowing us non-root users to systemize it?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/razer-phone-2/themes/beta-logo-oss-implementation-lighting-t3893981
It has a lot of features I want from the Chroma app, but I'm weary of rooting, especially now that Android 9 Pie has come out and no factory images for 9 Pie are on the Razer dev site. If you even wanted to put it in the next update and give users the option of which Chroma app they wanted to use, I'm sure CurtisMJ would think that was pretty neat, though you'd have to ask him. I mean, I'd personally pay to use it if it meant I didn't have to root. Maybe integrate it with the stock Chroma app, and charge $5 to upgrade to CurtisMJ's features, and then split the cash with him. Idk.

I wonder lol.
Interestingly I did see some code in the Chroma app which can grant use of the service to unprivileged apps. I think it was used to whitelist some other Razer component. Just opening up that functionality to users so they can "grant" Chroma access to apps of their choosing might be enough. Otherwise, if I could get a signed stub in the next OTA that'd be cool (and ridiculously unlikely, just to be clear)
Great comments everyone keep them coming!

Yeah, coming from my Samsung S8+, LDAC is the thing I'm missing the most.
I would just like to say thanks to Razer for listening to their customers and trying to be helpful, so: Thank you! :good: :victory:
I'm not a developer, but whatever these other guys need to get TWRP working, I'm all for

That's my goal atm to get the developers points of view and requests I'm proud of the community helping each other out so this is my next focus.
So far my feedback list has faster Factory images, and source code, device tree, more Audio Codec (APT-X AND LDAC) and a couple of other things I can't get into.
If anyone else thinks of anything lmk and I'll add it to my list to send on. I hope the right person sees it but again there is zero assurances that any of it will happen but this is where the voices matter.
Thanks again everyone!
Might be a little off topic, but since this is a gaming phone, why can't I pair my old ps3 controller? I even tried an old usb Xbox 360 controller, which a usb host test app successfully found the device. I would have hoped this would have been built in, being a gaming phone and all. I'm on pie and rooted, even when trying multiple previous methods of trying to get something the work, all the phone wants to do is charge the connected device.

Unfortunately the PS3 controller doesn't connect and act like a good Bluetooth or USB device. There is an app called sixaxis controller on the play store that allows you to connect a PS3 controller via Bluetooth, but it needs root and I don't believe it works anymore. There's also an app for wired PS3. It's not a Razer issue, it's a controller issue.

Right, I tested it all. That app gets to the part where it tries to pull the Mac of the phone's Bluetooth adapter and simply can't. I'm leaning more towards the an Oreo/Pie issue. Seems to be driver related.
