[Q] This device - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I currently using Le Max 2 4gb/64gb device as my daily driver and gaming. But i want to change to another device because of several issues.
1. I play pubg alot and my device is ok i guess to play pubg. I can run at hd and high without lag (only render/hiccup lag) but the problem is the thermal throttling, my device get hot pretty fast (sd820). So i have to play behind a fan Everytime my device gets hot.
2. Small battery. I need bigger battery.
3. No headphone jack. Tired of using Bluetooth headphone because i still need to charge the headphone.
So im thinking switching to asus zenfone max pro ml (budget phone price), i know that sd636 can run pubg pretty good. But after searching online reviews i found out most of users complaint about mobile data speed is slow. Asus zenfone max pro m1 have all solution to my above problems but if the mobile data speed is slow it's not good. So i have questions.
1. Is this true?
2. Is there any fix for this?
3. Does custom rom fix this problem?
4. All version of asus zenfone max pro m1 have this problem?
5. High ping all the time while playing pubg?
Thanks!!
Sorry for my bad english..

1. yes it's true
2. It seems to be fixed with last few updates
3. No problem in custom roms(currently on Aex pie)...performance and lte speed is good
4. Dont know about that
5. I got high ping on stock so switched to custom rom but now this problem has been fixed...
Asus max pro M2 launch is around the corner...wait for it...?

[Q] Note 4 SD 805 gaming issues

Hi all,
I just bought a note 4 sd 805 (the UK version). I expected this to be a very powerful phone, but instead I am kind of disappointed .
After playing Asphalt 8 for just 15min, the game starts to lag considerably and suffer from some serious frame rate drop.
The phone itself heats up a bit, but not a lot.
I also noticed that, if I run antutu for say 5 times in a row (with no pause), the score will drop from about 48000 to about 38000.
I still keep my note 3, which is rock solid and did not have the above behaviour (i.e. no heat at all, I can play asphalt 8 for hours with perfect quality and consistent antutu scores of about 43000).
Also my pvs is 13, which seems to be quite a good one (as per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/info-check-share-cpu-binning-t2950180)
Do you guys think I have a faulty note 4? Should I return it?
Thanks
I dont think that you has a faulty note. Same here with s5 and sd 801 runing gta vc. In about 20 mins of gaming fps drops horrible

Thanks,
but if the latest generation of phones cannot handle tasks (i.e. games) which the previous generation (note 3 in my case) handled with easy,
doesn't that mean the the phone is not fit for purpose?
In my case I paid £580 and expected to see some improvements. The only true improvement (compare with note 3) is the camera.
The game performance is awful.
The display seems to be brighter (on auto and against direct sun light), but if I actually want to use it like that, it starts heating up and throttle after 15min.
In normal tasks (browsing and light apps) note 3 and note 4 perform on par, with sometimes note 3 being faster.
I also ran the stress test app, and it seems that the note 4 does not stay on 2.7 at all. it starts with 2.4 then quickly goes to 2.2 and 1.9 and after a few minutes it goes down to 1.1 and it stays there. My note 3 on the other hand starts with 2.27 and stays there for few minutes then goes down to 1.9 and 1.7 and then it stays between 1.5 and 1.7.
So, under heavy load snapdragon 805 perform worst than 800. Please note that the SD in my unit has the perfect binning of pvs13. The SD 800 in my note 3 is pvs 2 and it is still way more stable.
I just want to know if you guys have similar experience with the phone?

You right bro.
You can manage your thermals with custom kernel. Its a know problem, even in the lg g3 forum theres a mod to raise the values of throttle.

Disable DVFS (just for the laggy games if your phone doesn't freeze and restart) and asphalt will be perfect. You can also run games in 1080 which helps and be grateful as there are kernels supported by your phone's version that you can mess with the thermal throttle and gpu clocks. Just don't let it get too hot
I agree with you, there should be no tweaks needed to run any game, but that's unfortunately not the case, but with some work you can get it to perfect performance! Good luck!
How's the gameplay on the Exynos variant? I never had gaming issues on the Note 2
@arjun90
exynos is way better at gaming
its not laggy in asphalt 8 even after 15 minutes
On sd805 asphalt 8 is just unplayable.. it does not work well from the first minute (I mean as good as my sd800 note 3)
and after about 15min it becomes even worst.
and that is with sd805 binned 13.. My first note 4 (which I returned) was getting hot just from web browsing. I am sure the cpu was with low quality bin.
Samsung should get rid of this low quality cpus.. We pay some serious money and at the end it is just a lottery...
I am also seriously disappointed with the awful deteriorating game performance. For a phone of this price and calibre I was expecting so much more. I hope it is software related and can be fixed, but I don't want to melt my phone!
I have Canadian SM-N910W8 with SD805 and 420 Adreno just tried asphalt 8 its running fast at high setting even with power saving on. Also scored Atutu 47923.
Anyone tried Wolf among us? Game won't start after title screen?

well I don't know what to say mate I have the same cpu and gpu, Antutu for me is even above 48000 regularly about 48700
still asphalt 8 is just pretty much unplayable.. Some other games however are ok. Hope it is a software issue and sammy/app developer(gameloft) fix it.
I am non rooted and fully stock..
Have you try to greenify everything then run the game? I think it probably software.
I'm rooted but using my original stock image as base with extras - fixed everything working. Took me a while but good trends here before had lots of issues.
Yes i agree with that games like asphalt should play smooth without installing custom rom.. It is really awful.. But now after flashing kernel and flashed rom it runs smoooottthh!..
it is the first android phone I am reluctant to root (at least for now). Lollipop is coming very soon and I prefer to see what it will bring to my note.
If if works for you guys (after rooting and possibly applying custom kernel and some modifications) it is sammy fault and not the game developer. It is really frustrating. Hope sammy fix this mess soon.
Yet again blaming the chip on what is clearly a not optimized game for the 805. Software is the problem. Ya know if the game isn't optimized for that chip it will run like ****, if they update for this phone and it still runs ****ty than they did a bad job.
Hi ive running the 1st version of asphalt 8 on my phone for about 20 min without any lags.Might be the games are not optimised yet
Edit:Just Noticed that the graphic settings to medium & high are not available which is very strange

I have noticed that any game with graphic options become unplayable after setting anything higher them low. ie. GTA SA.

bizarre.. for me the medium & high settings are available.. it just the game itself kind of unplayable.
the fact that some users report that the issue is fixable with root and custom kernel gives some hope.

FPS Drops in all games

I bought Nokia 6 yesterday and I was really satisfied with the phone but I faced 2 issues with this phone
1- Games runs too slow
2- NO NOTIFICATION LIGHT
I was wondering if the FPS drop can be fixed in Oreo..
From an SD 430 don't expect too much performance in intensive games, for me this is not an issue, because i didn't game on a phone, for gaming i have PC.
And about no notification light, im with you,why the hell they remove it from global version ? Its not a big deal anyway, you can check your phone at random intervals,so this dosen't get me mad overall,Nokia 6 its a good phone and its more than enough for me,i only use this smartphone for calls, messages, surfing the internet, social apps, some shots with camera, and listen to music, belive me it doing well,+ keep in mind that the nokia will offer us clean android + fast updates, and this is amazing.
Try vulkan based games like need for speed no limit and vulkan ppspp emulator for run Tekken 6 ....
In mine all games running smoothly ..

Please give me some ideas about my LeEco 3 pro's performance!

Hi all bro, first time sorry for my bad English, I really need your help!
I bought a new Leeco 3 pro last month.
It has :
-Snapdragon S821 2.35Ghz cpu, Adreno 530 652Mhz gpu with 524 GFLOPS.
-4Gb ram
-64Gb rom
-Full HD screen
-4070mAh battery
-159000 of antutu scores (62000 3D scores)
That's a hi-end performance smartphone but some thing not match its might. When play game, light to heavy graphic requires, the framerate often drop so bad.
Ex in Ace of arenas, Rules of survive, war song, desitive war, the fps can reach 4, 50 per second but sometimes they can drop to 17 18 not with a clearly reason although the Xiaomi Redmi note 3 pro with S650 cpu can run it with 40-45fps stability. Testing with Cpu metter, I see the max frequency of adreno 530 gpu is always change and gpu load only about 20-40% and in S650 is 50-70%.
I rooted it and run some overclock app to turn both of gpu and cpu to the highest frequency but nothing happen, the fps still drop suddenly, i get a lot of lags when play game. Asking some le eco 3 pro users, they said they have the same problem. I tried to install some le 3 pro 's rom, the Miui rom but stil can't resolve this problem. Can anyone help me????
I don't know what i have to do now!?
More info, when open the antutu app, i see enable high performance mode notification, so it can reach 159000 antutu score easily. Le 3 pro don't have the high performance options, it's only working full power when antutu testting but when play game, it 's looked like a lazy device.
Maybe your phone is so hot that it starts to scale down frequencies. On AICP 8.1 I have no problems with fps I dont trust EUI in case of performance

So does this bad performance only occur in 3D and real time games or all games? If you're on stock eUI, or an eUI ROM then you should uninstall literally every LeEco app and piece of bloatware you can find. LeEco's apps slow everything down. Have you tried LineageOS?
Hmm. I should try some of these myself. I'm curious about my Elite's performance. It handles 2D online games very well.
Set the 2 big cores to ondemand governor. If that doesn't improve it, try setting the 2 small cores to ondemand as well. You could also play with gpu governor.

VERY serious issues with CPU & Battery life - and horrible Xiaomi solution to it

Xiaomi decided to make a trick on us, and I think that might be even called a sort of scam - yet, my accusations may seem without proper argumentation quite invalid, so let's begin.
I bought this phone in a 6/128 version a month ago, as a successor to my previous experience with Xiaomi devices - The Redmi note 4(Mido). Immediately after unpacking it and installing latest OTA updates I ran AnTuTu benchmark in order to ensure myself whether it's a good upgrade or not(deciding factor was processor - whopping 2.35 GHz and GPU should be at least 1.5x as good as Snapdragon 625 had to offer). Average scores varied around 160k, while my device was... 95k. I didn't believe it's this bad, so I ran a few highly demanding titles(such as PUBG) and my fears rendered to be true. Everything was worse than my old Mido, with price tag twice as high! Not to even mention that battery life was sensibly worse, though capacity is almost identical.
This triggered the first red flag.
I made hard reset, and AnTuTu rose to 130k. I still didn't accept that state of matter, so I basically unlocked it, flashed TWRP and LineageOS. Results were... Non-existent. Yet, I decided to use it for some time because of just my pure love to LOS.
Things started getting... BAD. My phone started to literally bake itself(80°C avg) when screen was unlocked, causing thermal throttling which only made performance worse.
As soon as MIUI 10 came up I decided to say "f*** it" and return the phone to original state. I flashed the stock ROM, overwrote TWRP and started using it again.
I thought this update is a solution to all of my problems, but general ****ty performance seemed to happen each time the charger was connected instead. Google Pay didn't work as well because by device was "rooted", so I installed TWRP with Magisk just to make it work and terrible truth came to my eyes.
This update basically CLOCKED DOWN THE CPU.
On battery, all cores were underclocked to Snapdragon 820 clocks(2.35->2.15;2.1->1.6GHz) while connecting to charge makes all cores go at 1132 MHz, and GPU to 132 MHz - that's slower than Snapdragon 400!
Luckily, the performance on battery can be changed with root, but on charger - it's stuck on 1.1GHz.
Why do I write it all here?
I want to ask you guys if my data is the same as yours, and to ask bigger brains for a possible way to take control over clock when charging. This is frustrating to face performance throttling in such way - Is Xiaomi copying from Apple even their battery policy? I bought this phone only because of the CPU.
Thanks for any advice
You can always try a custom kernel that has all the tools to tweak your phone's performance.
I found that for my own use MIUI 10 is better than any other custom rom at the moment, including Oreo based examples, but that's just me and how I use the phone. I have it for a year now (4/64 international version) and still happy with it. Couldn't care less about the benchmark scores as long as my experience is lag free without overheating and enough battery life to get me through a day and a bit.
I found that occasionally I need to reboot it just to "reset" the OS and get battery performance where it should be.
Thanks for any advice

I'm running Xiaomi.eu weekly 8.9.20 MIUI 10 Android 8.0 with no problems on the international version 6/128.
Looking at the cpu cores in AIDA64 there seems to be no problems, last I checked with antutu (several versions back) it was fine.
You should be thankfull for thermal throttelling, when charging for example.
I do not recommend quickcharging on any phone.
The Mi Note 2 does not have well implemented cooling apparently, you can damage the motherboard if running too hot for too long.
There is a quite detailed informative thread on the MIUI forum about this:
http://en.miui.com/thread-2541123-1-1.html
So perhaps not the best choice for extreme gaming, otherwise fine.

Too right mate.
After firmware update, this device became a ****ty one.
I've been using Lineage with 8.5.24 firmware and it was "OK". My old Zuk Z2 was still better (faster and better battery life).
Now, with 9.xx firmware, this Mi Note 2 is pure garbage.
I'm waiting for a stable Lineage 16 to decide if I keep this device or buy another one.
One thing is sure: I'll never buy any Xiaomi devices again.
Later my device very similiar problem with you, then i update to miui 10 global stable, with twrp and magisk applied and still have problem when intense playing game becoming hot above 60 degrees. I tweak with kernel aduitor try to lock each core big.LITTLE max at 1500 mhz and delete thermal throttling in system/vendor/etc then my device perform smooth and acceptable temp with longer battery.
Im not into benchmarking with antutu just play with PUBG mobile I get high and stable fps with no hot temperature which is actually good.

I am in agreement with you in everything, I also checked it. The solution for me, after trying roms based on Miui was to change a custom rom. And with Aosp Ext. I'm doing very well.
You don't need to try a custom ROM.
Just follow the steps mentioned in this video to activate the PERFORMANCE mode and you'll be fine:

Latest Gcam works great, also night photos.
But you have to tweak the settings to get it to work well and not FC.
Arnova's Advanced 1.5: GCam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.5.190418.1850.apk (Arnova8G2, 2019-04-18, configs, changelog)
What kind of "the settings"? Could you explain it please?

Should I buy Asus Zenfone Max pro M1(6gb) or Realme 2 pro (6gb)?

I'm having confusion between Realme 2 pro and Asus Zenfone, because Asus has got a massive battery (5000 mAh) and (Snapdragon 636), whereas Realme 2 pro has (Snapdragon 660), but a very low battery (3500 mAh) considering the processor. And I specifically want to buy a phone for gaming (PUBG, Asphalt 9 etc).
I will stick to ZMP M1
Serious Network bug in Max Pro M1.
Even with better reception.
Get poco, not much price difference and superior in every possible way.
If you are not fan of notch you can go with asus zenfone maxpro m1 but wait max pro m2 just got announced

I would suggest Zenfone, because:
1. Notch displays are not good for gaming & watching videos (for obvious reason - display cutout, so some contents won't be visible).
2. M1's 5000 mAh battery performs very well. You can play for much longer time.
3. SD636 is just Underclocked SD660. And there's Overclocked kernel available for M1 to match the performance. So there won't be, if not then slight performance difference.
Neither Asphalt 9, nor PUBG lags on M1. I personally play Asphalt 9 with High graphics, and PUBG with HD graphics + Extreme FPS. There's no lag or heating issue.
For gaming i recommend you real me 2 pro
For long term gaming asus m1
Build is plastic on real me while metal in asus
Stock android is in asus while buggy color os is in real me which is not properly optimised.
Rest is you choice. I would go for m1 pro its available for very cheap rate in sell
You want that color os for life???
The hardware of realme2pro is good...
SD660..
Faceunlock via IR
But you will never be able to flash any custom rom or even root any oppo device because they do not make the kernel sources publicly avaliable...i.e---No developer community/Roms/custom kernels/Root
And..... Color os is very heavy and performace will be compromised
Go for asus

If you are primarily into gaming, then Max Pro 6GB any-day. The ColorOS is bloated and not properly optimized.

If you consider yourself well versed with Android don't buy any device which has ColorOS or else you will regret.
Reasons:
It will give a constant flashing banner on your statusbar as soon as you enable Developers option, accessibility for any app, Mobile Hotspot, etc. and force you to shut them down.
You won't see any notification icons if the device has a notch (even realme 2 pro although it has very small notch).
Usb debugging will auto disable within 10 minutes of non-usage (it will anyway get disabled as the OS will keep on flashing banner until you disable Developers option).
No bootloader unlocking for any Realme device as of now.
These are few of the worst issues in ColorOS 5.2 right now.
Brother you should get realme 2 pro
If you can live with ColorOS and don't mind a smaller battery, go for Realme 2 Pro.
I used Asus Zenfone Max pro me 6gb after using OnePlus 5 8gb. Honestly saying Asus got good network reception than OnePlus 5 >> + asus has massive battery, pubg and asphalt 9 runs extremely well on balanced graphics and high fps. I don't know why people says that Asus Zenfone Max pro has bad network reception. I stay in a very off network place, but I still get good network reception.

It's happening for some people unfortunately.
For wifi I can wholeheartedly confirm.
Surprised that you have better reception on ZMPM1 than OP5. Good for you.

For people buying 15k phones, 7k would be regarded as much of a price difference.
Agree regarding the value part though.
Also superior in every possible way!?
