OPPS28.85.16-2 October Security Patch [OTA + TWRP] - Moto G5 Guides, News, & Discussion

The October Security Patch for those on OPP28.85-16 has come out.
You can sideload the OTA if you're on untouched OPP28.85-16 or flash the TWRP zip if you've have TWRP.
Edit:
For the TWRP flashable zip, check this thread .
I removed it from this thread after I realized it's not OPPS28.85-16-2 but OPPS28.85-13-2
Notice that if you're on retca or reteu channel, or any other channel where you've got an Oreo version other than OPP28.85-16, then you should either wait for the OTA notification to pop up on your phone or flash the TWRP flashablr zip.
THIS OTA ZIP IS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH OPP28.85-16. FLASHING IT OVER OPP28.85-13 OR ANY OTHER VERSION WILL HARD BRICK YOUR DEVICE
That is because this OTA patches the device's gpt table. So if you're not on OPP28.85-16 and sideload this= :crying::crying: goodbye Cedric
Downloads:
OTA : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PHJqkdFgS-erSJ0jc54cTWvUrNRQWfZJ/view?usp=drivesdk
PS I removed the TWRP link, it's actually for OPPS28.85-13-2
Sorry for the bad edition, I'm sleepy and don't have a computer around.

Flashed the twrp ota by Nzedpred yesterday and it's working like a charm. Previously I was on OPP28.85-16

Hi, i'm having some troubles to make my moto g5 identified when i'm gonna sideload the ota. how can I solve it?

Twrp Dirty flash works or i should do clean install?

the TWRP-Link shows a ...13-2, not a ...16-2, is this correct?

can not update from ota package.
every time I check for updates, Moto Update doesn't recognize local packages. Had to apply patch via Recovery

Have you installed the usb drivers from Motorola's website?
If you didnt, then do it, but if you've already done so and still the phone is not detected, type %tmp% on your file explorers address bar (assuming you're on windows) and and then search for .msi fules. Find the .msi correspondent to your Motorola drivers and install it mannualy.

No, that's not the way you do it. You have to install Motorola usb drivers, then install ADB/platform-tools, then enable usb debugging and connect the to the pc using the usb cable.
After you've done that you'll type adb devices and you should see your phone's serial number. If that shows up, type adb sideload ota-filename.zip

you dont have any problems with gmail sync?

OTA Side load not working for me. Get Error 7.
Downloaded earlier that day the twrp File and installed, but then I saw that this was -13-2. Completely delete my G5 again and installed 85-16 again.
Now downloaded the OTA File, in TWRP used ADB Sideload (adb devices showed my G5) but ended with Error 7.

I haven't heard of that being available out there, but u can relock using the firmware provided in this thread and apply this OTA afterwards, that way you'll have a relocked bootloader and will be in the latest security patch, although if you're not on retus/retbr/retin I recommend you to find a firmware specific to your channel (even if it's an old one) and relock your bootloader using it, and then apply the OTA's that pop up on your notifications, so as not to relock the bootloader with a firmware from another channel, which will prevent you from receiving future otas.
But if you're on one of the three quoted channels you should be fine when fastbooting this firmware.

this update fix the wifi tethering of third-party applications?

Actually since SuperSU 2.60 you don't need to worry about boot.img. Depends on your config though. Check out the thread below.

Got the OTA just now. Any chance it might fix the wifi problems I started getting with last month's update? Or does it strictly contain only boring security fixes?
Can you post a link to OTA

I did see that after. However, I prefer system root still at this time. But I did see where you can run some commands to make the systemless to be system root.
So I'm on the elementalX kernel, TWRP recovery, and rooted (stock) rom. Can i take the OTA that's prompting my phone without it overwriting any of that? I see that the OTA is only 11.4MB so I would assume that at most it would break ROOT.
Thanks in advance!

I have the latest TWRP recovery and I'm rooted and running ElementalX kernel. I updated yesterday successfully.
Download the factory image and extract boot.img, system.img, and vendor.img. Nothing changed in the bootloader or radio with this update, so you do not need those.
Then, run the following:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
Then reboot into TWRP and flash SuperSu again.
Then wipe cache/dalvik and reboot into system.

Hey folks,
Has the OTA URL been made intentionally harder to capture? I got the OTA noon Jan 6th and immediately dumped logcat, but despite the log covering the entire morning there was no URL in there. The log seemed to reflect that the OTA has already been downloaded over WiFi previously, and the phone's UI simply gave the option to install, not to download.
Am I missing something here, or is the only way to capture now to be intercepting traffic and manually running an update check regularly in hopes you get lucky?
I feel like the Android update model is getting even worse, not better. Now not only do Google not publish the OTA links, enthusiasts have a hard time supporting the community too.

No problem! Also, when I rebooted into system, my phone bootlooped once but didn't again after that. And you will also have to reflash the EX kernel.
Just FYI, I got all of this information from flar2 over in the EX kernel thread from this post.

I didn't know there was a URL for the OTA and that it might show up in the logcat. Otherwise I would've checked for it. And doesn't logcat clear after each reboot? It would mean you would need to have adb ready and dump the log right after you start the download, but before the reboot which might be automatic. I know I've seen some logcat related stuff under dev options - at least for a longer buffer, not sure if you can make it persist across reboots.
I had not rebooted yet, the log covered from before 2AM that morning until noon when I received the notification. Unless the download occurred over ten hours before I was notified I would have expected to see the URL in the log.
Wow I have an update popped up!
Normally I have to manually do it!

Which SuperSu are you using?
The one in this post works for Quark Motorola Marshmallow. SuperSu beta 2.62. After you flash it for initial root, then you can update to newer version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69722490&postcount=17
INITIAL ROOT ON QUARK MOTOROLA MARSHMALLOW 6.0.1
This same version of Marshmallow was released back in July for sibling Quark Moto XT1225. We found out then newer versions of SuperSu don't work for initial root. You need this older version first. No need to re-invent the wheel. It's the same device, same software.
_______________
Go ahead and download SuperSU from the attached file at bottom of this post. It's an older version of SuperSu but works well on the Quark Motorola Marshmallow ROM. You can always update to newer version later.
BETA-SuperSU-v2.62-3-20151211162651
Attached to this bottom of this post or download from here:
https://download.chainfire.eu/751/SuperSU/
Flash this version initially. You can update to newer version later. (People had problems flashing the very newest SuperSu for initial root, but this version works good. Again, you can update to newer version later, after you gain root.)
_______
BONUS TIP - SuperSu Setting
After you reboot, go into SuperSu settings and UNcheck this box. Mount namespace separation.
Uncheck that. Disable that. Then, reboot.
If it's enabled it will conflict with Titanium Backup which you will use at some point, or should. And you will have no idea why Titanium Backup is saying you are out of space, when you are not -- but it's due to this setting in SuperSu!

No. You can just reflash your choice of boot logo to replace the unlocked warning screen. It's just a static image Motorola insists on showing you that your bootloader is unlocked. I know, I UNLOCKED it on purpose!
Here's boot logos (not to be confused with boot animation -- the boot logo is what you see before the boot animation starts) you can flash with ADB. Various colors of the Motorola M logo.
Remove annoying bootloader unlocked warning
ADB FLASHABLE BOOT LOGOS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68538894&postcount=2
And here's the same boot logos you can flash with TWRP:
TWRP FLASHABLE BOOT LOGOS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68579272&postcount=5
Works for all Quarks (XT1254/XT1250/XT1225).
It worked! Thanks man.

Of course, I delayed it a couple days, and now it doesn't show the update available anymore. Still get the "you're up to date" even though it shows a failed download in the status.
Guess it's for the best, I'll wait for a 7 rom that's stable enough to be a DD.

I unlocked the bootlader and rooted the phone before giving it to my wife. During that whole process, fastboot had no problems recognizing the phone (obviously). Then my wife tried to update via the OTA which got her stuck in TWRP. I'd like to reflash the stock ROM, but the problem I have is I can't use fastboot to do commands line by line (as shown in the link above) since "fastboot devices" doesn't show my phone anymore. I was able to get her going on a custom ROM for now, but I'd like to put her back on the stock ROM so we won't encounter this problem again. I've reinstalled the Motorola driver several times, but no luck. ADB has no problems recognizing the phone when in recovery. One thing that happened recently was a big update to Windows 10, but I'm not sure if that is the reason for my fastboot issues.
I intend to give it a go on another computer once I get the phone again from the wife, but any advice until then would be appreciated.
Thanks. I've installed a custom ROM but im not happy with the results (specially the poor camera performace). Will this "undo" everything? I mean, stock apps, stock widgets, etc etc? (don't care if the bootloader stays unlocked and the warning moto message while booting). I know this may be a stupid question, but like Homer would say: "it's my first day"

Just a follow up to my previous post, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Motorola driver and ADB on the original computer, but for some reason it still won't "see" the phone in fastboot. I was able to install ADB/Fastboot and the Motorola driver on a separate computer (also Windows 10) to get fastboot to recognize the phone so I could issue commands to reinstall the stock firmware. I noticed, though, that the following commands FAILED when I entered them:
fastboot erase customize
fastboot erase clogo
I'm not sure what those were for, but the phone seems to be working fine on the stock firmware now.
I flashed the one in the retail folder and it says ret-EU in the settings so flash that one

Mina kernel does not work as it is built for 6.0.1. But the same TWRP works, and you can still root the phone. You have to systemless root though.
Hoping to build a nougat kernel that has root restrictions removed and such. I just have to wait for Samsung to release the kernel source, but that could take months, and I don't even know if they are going to release source or not.

OK good. This will save time from uploading it. I'm waiting for a stable root method.
Ever since I've installed custom ROM, I don't receive any OTA.
Has anyone tried updating via smart switch? If so , does MM Roms still work?

Correct, once u flash a kernel, rom, or twrp, u are not able to receive ota cuz u have a device status of custom vs official. U can get ota s again if u flash the last stock firmware via odin first. Then go to check for updates. Voila. Nougat 7.1.1.
Btw smart switch and any other samsung firmware app/program suck. Use updato.on play store
And if u do update, yes u can go back and forth between android versions
Isn't it possible to root OTA w/ supers kitchen ? By adding unsecure kernel ? Someone should post one! My WiFi is out

There are restrictions on the stock nougat kernel and we are working on it now, once those restrictions are gone, i dont know possibly. We almost have a working base rom, its stock and then some, but its not ready yet...
Awesome, is it on git hub?
I've been brushing up on my cross compiling . I don't have the bandwidth for A ROM right now, I'd like to try and compile the kernel.
I was able to add governors long ago on my Droid incredible, like to give it a shot.

Go to play store, download updato, aka "updates for android." Search go SM-J700T. Download the most recent dated firmware. Copy to PC, unzip, load into ap slot Odin. It will fail unless u either wipe EVERYTHING in twrp beforehand, or while in Odin, tick the nanderase all option as well. After successful flash, and setup shows on the screen.don't set it up.pull battery, go to download mode, vol down home, power. Flash the latest twrp by ashyx. He has a new version from a couple months ago. Then let twrp boot up, go to format data type yes. If u want root, flash SuperSU 2.82 or magisk 15.3, then the encryption break zip, reboot. Now setup your phone.

[RESOLVED]December patch update failed.

I am using magisk systemless and I followed the guide carefully to make it survive the OTA. Unfortunately, it doesn't pass step 1 when installing. I did not touch the system the entire time I was using magisk. What other options do I have for me to have the december patch? Thanks.
Follow my guide, might able to help you

after flashing full november rom, you should do normal OTA update . do that before installing magisk again to avoid complications

I'm not sure why it doesn't work on your PC, but maybe you could place the tissot_images folder on drive C root directory.
December updates ruined my google apps , playstore shows the error {rh-01}, play services cannot be accessed by most of the games, and i cannot backup my data any more..

Just wondering, did you clear the google framework services data to force the OTA update arrival?

So it's not the update which caused the problem, but it was you Clear data of play store, play store services and all apps which are broken and set them from scratch. If it won't help, remove and add your google account again. With bit of luck you'll get it working again.

MiFlash is basically a GUI for the batch scripts that come with the ROM when downloaded from MIUI.
You can download the ROM from here and follow the flashing guide linked there or you can do all that work manually.
However, that requires being familiar with command line, fastboot, Windows batch scripts, etc. Here is how to do it, in short:
Install Android's platform tools;
Install the USB drivers required for fastboot;
Download the ROM archive and extract it, and its content;
Inspect and run flash_all_except_storage.bat from the extracted ROM.
I get this error with the same setup (from November update). Does bootloader need to be locked for otas to work? I've tried uninstalling magisk and rebooting to no avail.
