OnePlus 6T pre applied protector thin film interference (rainbow effect)? - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hi all,

Is anyone else seeing some rainbow color shifting on their pre applied plastic screen protector? Here's a picture of mine
https://imgur.com/a/uLGH6m3
It's beginning to bother me a bit. I only see it at certain angles and lighting and mostly when the screen is dark, but since I usually try to black everything out, I often see it. I'm afraid to peel off the protector with nothing else really reviewed on the market. Do we have an idea when an official OnePlus tempered glass protector will come out? Also, does anyone have any experience using the wet-apply protectors on OnePlus devices?
Finally, for those who have gone naked, how have your OnePlus screens held up in the past to scratches?

I do not have this problem - protector is fine

I noticed this same thing on mine, I thought it may be attributed to the in display fingerprint reader.

I may be saying BS, because I don't have the phone (yet): are you sure it is a real screen protector and not just packaging? I have seen that on other phones I had in past.

It's a real screen protector. It comes pre-applied from the factory.
Personally, I took it off after half a day. I've never had a screen protector on a single phone, and I didn't like how the plastic felt vs the actual glass of the screen.
For the OP, I know what you're talking about. I saw a similar rainbow effect with the screen off while I had the protector on it. It didn't bother me, and I didn't think about it again. Now that I've removed the protector, I haven't noticed it. This is more of an anecdotal example, though, as I didn't do any real tests.
On a related note, it's good that OP polarized the screen (and at a 45 degree angle). I hate the rainbow effect that you get on non-polarized screens when looking at them through polarized lenses.

I've gone naked on all phones I've had in the past, from the original Galaxy S to now the 6T. I've never had a scratch on any phone, and the screens have only gotten better over time. Each phone I've had has been dropped every now and then but always without a scratch. The only thing you really need is a case.

I noticed mine doing this right after I bought the phone, the rainbow effect seems to be a slightly different pattern than the OP's. I don't notice it while the phone is on, so it doesn't bother me. It is more noticeable than it appears in this picture though:

Oleophobic Coating

Just got the Hero. Great phone. Exceeds expectations, but I can't understand the reason for HTC to put the oleophobic coating on the screen. Don't get me wrong it works just as stated. I barely have to clean/wipe the screen clean of fingerprints. It's actually pretty amazing. What I don't understand is as far as I know, most smartphone users use a screen protector. I for one use one on all my phones, but doesnt that kind of cancel out the screen coating? Now I have a wonderful technology put to the wrong use. Wouldnt it be more useful coating the screen protector with the oleophobic coating?

You shalt do something not because is smart but because the iPhone already did it.
i understand where you're coming from, but i work with guys that between us have over 30 windows mobile phones and about half a dozen of using android. Not one of them bothers with the screen protectors.
strange really, I've never used on myself, but i do know people who religiously put it on their phones straight out of the box, before they've even put the battery in!
i suppose that there will be plenty of people who get this phone just cos it's a touch screen, and don't even know about screen protectors, cos they've come over from dumb phones.
I used to use screen protectors, but never bothered with my G1 and haven't had an issue despite not keeping the phone in any sort of case. I think modern screens are probably that much better now at resisting scratches.
Regards,
Dave
The coating on the phone makes it almost impossable to have a screen protector. Keeps coming off too easy because the coating is rejecting it. I wonder if the hero is a glass screen or not?? Sure does feel like glass and as far as I know, the only other phone with the coating in the iphone and that screen is glass.
screen protector
i have ordered a real one from htc....hope to get it monday
and yes the screen looks and feels like glass to me
No problem so far with the original screen protector which I received with my Hero from Handtec. Goes on easy and so far so good
I've always used a screen protector on all my previous devices as I don't really like cases. I would definitely recommend using one.
Screen protectors

Was thinking of ordering this when it comes back in stock. I used to use protectors on previous winmo phones, normally stock ones that came with the phones, but this screen looks more resistive to scratches than previous flexi screens. Might think about a case instead but this just adds bulk to the phone.....
As always too many decisions !!!

I am seriously considering using my s7 edge without Screen Protector, What's opinion?

I bought s7 edge new...a few days ago...
I bought him a Screen Protector puregear, simple a bad screen protector.
And I can not find a good screen protector, In the meantime, I'm not using my s7 edge, because it.
I anyway not love screen protector, so I thought maybe... I will use my s7 edge without a screen protector
Would be very happy to hear your opinions, worthwhile or not ?
If you can elaborate This will help me, thus I will learn more.
Thanks!!!
I'm using it without one too, but I use the leather cover from Samsung(not the flip cover). Just as drop protection and because the phone is very slippery without one
I've spent more than 50$ on screen protectors still haven't find anything that last longer than a week. Somes peeled off, somes have touch issues so i decided to just use my phone naked. The phone hold up surprisingly well for the past 2 months, not any scratches even when i did drop it twice and there were some dents on the benzel.
---------- Post added at 06:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:25 PM ----------
My advice is u should definitely buy a case since the phone is pretty slippery and the benzels are so thin that u might find ur fingers resting on the screen causing touch issues.
Screen protectors are all personal preferences. From what i know, it limit the beauty of the screen, harder to see in direct sunlight, and u cant use it underwater.
Why not using it with a flip cover (but w/o screen protector)?
Best of both worlds, you can show the phone off yet it is protected all-round.

I have both. The leather one is sheer class (and better protection), the slim line one is form fitting with less protection (but still a helluvamore than not using anything).
Both make the phone look superb.
I have my s7e from since it came out, i found that my diamond bling scratches the screen when i put it on my ear so bought a screen protector but lasted 4 hours, im not fund of screen protectors i like my screen naked. Have hundreds of scratches now.
who needs a screen protector? I've never used one since like 4 years and all my phones are exposed at least to dog bites (I'm a vet and the phone is always a curious thing for them), and never broke anyone
With the s7 edge I'm using it for three months and never used one, both crystals are like new, but I'm using a spigen case because samsung's sucks
I don't use a screen protector or any protection at all, and my device (which I bought in March, shortly after its release) looks just fine. No scratches on the body, and I only have a teenie tiny scratch on the screen, which isn't bothering me. If you're the type of person who throws his stuff around, then I'd get some protection. If you're like me and you love using your devices naked, then go ahead and do that. Just DO NOT keep your phone in the same pocket with your keys etc. That will 100% scratch up your phone. Keep it generally far away from metal parts, including metallic zippers on jackets/hoodies/jeans!
I've had mine since before the official release (Tmo FTW) and I've never had a screen protector on it. I do use a Spigen black TPU case, but my screen has 0 noticeable scratches on it. You can find one or two if the screen is off and you're looking for them, but if the screen is on, you couldn't see them if you tried.
i havent had a screen protector since day one and have to scratches on mine. still looks brand new
I got a WriteRight flex screen protector (film style) from Staples in Ontario, Canada. Came with 2. First one is still on and doing well to stop simple scratches from car keys and such. It seems like there are no good options for glass protectors due to the edge. I usually would always use a glass protector + skin on body. This time i have a case that is banana-shaped to protector the screen if it falls face down and the film protector for minor scratch protection. Decent combo.
I tried multiple screen protectors and all of them were actual garbage because of the edge screen. I've been using mine without a screen protector for the last few months. It's just not worth it to me to Cripple the device and stop the enjoyment of using it because of a bad screen protector or because I'm worried about a small scratch. I've had good luck I've got a slight scratch that cannot be seen unless you're really looking for it hard after 2 months. Biggest thing is keep your keys and pens out of your pocket that your phone is in

No screen protector here. No problems ;]
Just like @ flyinj54 said, I keep my phone in my left pocket by itself. Keys and whatever else I put in my right pocket. As long as you do that and don't drop your phone you'll be good.
I tried going protector-less for a while and discovered a small scratch from somewhere. I'm very careful with my phone and hate scratches. After trying a vinyl skinomi wet install which kept on denting/imprinting, a few cheap glass ones, i've settled on the spigen plastic protector, which has been working great!
I too have spend nearly £50 on screen protectors, haven't found a good one yet, and so I now use my S7E without screen protector.
I have spend some fair amount of money on case though, I have a Noreve case, and a Piel Frama's SlimFrama case.

I did that for a while with only the Samsung Flip Wallet cover. It was fine. found Skinomi matteskin screen protector that wraps around the edges, I love it! it reduces glare and also keeps grease and fingerprints off the screen. It has almost a rubbery vinyl feel to it.

Yes i can confirm this. Even at screen off the scratches are barely visible, you can notice only if you look close to the screen. For me it really makes difference, i mean the screen is much clearer without protector because most protectors tend to absorb dirt being plastic(with all of my devices i used before never had protectors), much crispier and brighter. I dont know its just my opinion.
It's really quite simple. Unless you want hairline scratches (or worse) within a couple of weeks you use a screen protector. No matter how careful you are, this is unavoidable simply from everyday use.
Personally, I use a Zagg HD Dry. I've had the same protector on my phone since the middle of March and it still looks virtually new (bar a few inevitable marks). And with my Spigen crystal cover, it's never curled up at the edges like a lot of people have complained about.
Bottom line for me (although I accept opinions vary), buying a phone worth over £600 then not protecting it with a cover and screen protector is madness.

LeEco Pro 3, anyone using it withou ANY screen protector?

The stock screen protector is rubbing off so I replaced it with a new one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N3ZTMLG/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Unlike the stock one, this one is the hard glass. (the stock one is a film).
The problem with this screen protector is that it is a grease/finger print magnet. Ususally I can remove the grease/finger print from the screen by rubbing it on my shirt. With this one, it just moves the finger print grease around. No my shirt is not greasy because I tried it on another phone and it didn't smear the grease around. The only way to get a clean screen is if I use a micro fiber clothe with some water. Also I noticed that my screen is not as bright as before with the new screen protector, especially when using it outdoors.
I was thinking about remove the screen protector all together. Since our phone has Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3, it "should" be fine. But before I remove the new screen protector, just wondering if anyone is going bare on the screen and if they have any issues with scratched screen.
Thanks
I haven't had any screen protector on my phone since october. Screen is fine, although I haven't dropped my phone.
I have been using the same screen protector which i bought from aliexpress and i can feel the brightness problem but i am fine with it since this tmp glass removes entirely the ugly black borders from the phone.
I dont know if there is a good color tempered glass which does both.
Just removed the aftermarket screen protector today and going bare. So far it seems fine and resistant to scratches as well. It feels a lot better than the stock screen protector or the aftermarket one. It is a lot brighter and really smooth. Another thing that I noticed is that it is a lot more sensitive to the touch.
Never used any sort of screen protector on my phones. Never a single scratch.
As long as you do not put any other items in a pocket with a phone, it should be fine.
I have tried 3-4 different screen protectors and none of them seem to stick properly. They never want to stick on either (or both) the left and right sides of the screen. idk what the issue is but I've never had that problem on other phones
I'm too afraid to not use any screen protector. The camera lens scratches so easily that I don't trust the glass at all.

I Have the same problem. While the screen protector is ok and protects the phone, it catches fingerprints and the most anoying thing, outside it reflects everything and I can't see very well. I didn't find any matte or anti-glare tempered glass screen for le pro 3. Only iphone and something else. If anyone finds something good post a link please.

It has been a week now since I removed all screen protector and I am happy that I did it. It feels so much better and I can say that the gorilla glass on this is legit. I work in a warehouse and I have my keys and a box cutter in my pockets. I try to keep them away from my phone but when you are moving fast, sometimes the box cutter ends up in the same packet as my phone. So far still no scratch on the screen.
I'm still keeping mine, even if reflects everything because on my old phone covered with full cover, front and back, dropped on a corner of the screen, the screen protector took the fall and broke instead of the actual screen. So better to be cautios.
Mine came with a screen protector (X727), but I ripped it off very quickly. I haven't broken a single smartphone yet.
No screen protector since day one. No case either. Dropped it few times and cosmetic glass around camera cracked. Front screen is pristine, which is surprising since I am not careful with it.

Found these cases on Amazon that provide screen protection. I have used similar cases on other devices and have had good luck in preserving the screen without the use of a screen protector:
kw mobile canvas case
kw mobile cover shell case
Never used any screen protector on my smartphones, since my first Sony Ericson P800 years before the first iPhone were released...
Never broke the screen, had a few small scratches on some of them (not all though), and I usually keep my devices for 3 to 4 years. My previous phone was a Samsung Note 2, the screen is still perfect.
I will not put any screen protector on my Le Pro 3 either...
I was using the stock screen protector which was preinstalled until today. Sand scratched it so I removed it.

Is anyone having issues with corners of your tempered glass protectors not adhering properly? I'm getting white ghosting all around the protector. Replacement ones had the same effect...

Same problem for me.I think its because of the curve of the screen
I got the full coverage one from aliex, no problems with adhesion, but it's an awfull magnet for smudges and fingerprints, and dulls the colors of the screen, gonna run it a few days just for kicks, but I'll remove it for sure.
And oh, havent had a screen protector, not since day one, and no problems, not a scratch on my phone (I do take care of my gadgets though)

mine doesn't even cover the screen fully...baffled by this, honestly.
I removed screen protector today. Got sick of dust and other sht all around due to corners of glass not adhering properly. The phone looks much better, so far so good.
Just in case try to avoid keeping it with keys etc. Also check this .

Faulty Screen

I know this has been discussed in the past in other threads and I thought firmware updates fixed it, but is anyone experiencing faulty screen at the top corners? I'm also experiencing phantom clicks in the middle of the screen while scrolling with my finger.
I have 21s firmware on a X727. I have the stock screen protector on it. Any help is appreciated.
Its the screen protector. Remove it. I think they fixed the screen touches with 20s so not so sure about firmware.

Thanks. I'll remove it. I was hesitant to do so because I always use one with my phones. Do you know if all screen protectors cause this issue with these phones?
Dont worry glass is very hard and it doesnt scratch unless you drop it really hard as most of the phones. Tbh i havent found any good glass, but i think nillkin products are very good. But i could care less since they ddegrade the phone aesthetically.
Never used a screen protector with my Gorilla Glass either. It's scratch resistant enough, the screen is harder than metal (keys, coins...) but softer than sand. So beware of sand... Otherwise almost nothing will scratch it.
I always was careful to never drop my phones, ever.
I removed mine and wow what difference it made. Screen looks better and way more responsive. I'm running it naked without a screen protector and so far so good

I ran mine naked for 6 months, not a scratch, so no worries. I put a full screen protector just to make a change for a bit, but am taking it off soon.

screen scratches

Is it just me or is the screen on this phone really easily scratched. I got my op6t shortly after launch before there were any screen protectors that worked on the market and have been using it without one and the screen is extremely scratched. Far worse than many older phones I've also used without a protector. Definitely seems like this "gorilla glass" isn't what it used to be.
Would always use a screen protector on any phone,Still have factory applied one on my 6T,won't be taking it off unless it gets scratched.Dont think gorilla glass gives much protection

I've never had a screen scratch like this. I've never had a phone get anything but barely noticeable scratches. This thing is covered with deep gouges. Either gorilla glass quality has gone in the dumpster or this phone doesn't actually have it. But one this is for certain and this screen is very easily scratched like no other phone I have ever used.

I got rid of that after a week. It was a sticky fingerprint magnet. Just terrible.
I share the same experience (not with the 6T though as it still has its original screen protector but) because my previous phones S8 and S9 seemed to scratch easier than my older phones. So I was afraid the same would happen to my 6T.
I did some research and this might have something to do with that more recent tempered glass generations have become 'more tempered' which may lead to scratches more easily. ''More tempering “makes the whole screen more tolerant to overall bending, as in dropping the phone,”. “But it does not necessarily improve the hardness of the glass [and] might actually make it slightly worse. It’s the hardness that enables scratch resistance.” - The Verge
This might be true or false, however, also don't forget that phones have become bigger and especially their screen to body ratio which perhaps makes scratches more prominent, as a scratch on the screen is more noticeable than one on the bezel.
You must be exposing it to some serious hard dust or setting it face down on hard surfaces. I had no screen protector on mine for almost a month and it was still flawless when I applied a glass protector about a week ago. With no changes in usage, there are several noticable deep scratches on my screen protector after just over a week using it. Something else must be at play with your situation

It never lays face down it's always in my pocket or face up sitting somewhere. My older phones were even subjected to much harsher environments do to previous occupation. This thing should not even have minor scratches with how I treat it but instead it's covered top to bottom in scratches many of them very deep and noticable. My old phone would sit on a welding bench half the day with grinding Sparks flown at it regularly and it's in much better condition than the 6t that's been babied since opening.
Well I'm sorry to hear that I can only assume that you got a bunk unit because that's insane and I would be pissed!

I'm having the same issue. I've never used a screen protector since I got my Nexus 1 way back in the day. I've never had an issue with screens scratching until now. I finally broke down and bought a tempered glass screen protector. Anyone know if OP or T-Mobile will warranty this? (bought from T-Mobile)
I also had this phone like three days ago... I took the screen protector off just the day after and the scratches the screen is recieving is really serious... Have been wondering where the scratches is coming from. I hardly put in my pocket and the screen is always up. Just can't understand. I regret taking the protector of tho. From the reviews I thought it was hard to scratch, guess I'm wrong.

Typically the more resistant to cracking and breakage the glass seems to get the more it scratches.. But that could just be me
