Tinkering with Xperia Arc S in November 2018 - Xperia Arc General

I decided to revive my old Sony Xperia Arc S using new ROMs and wanted to find out what all is working at present. (my phone was already running CM 11 for a long time). the camera was dead and the keys were a bit wonky but the phone was functional. I decided to try CM13 from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...dev-2011-unofficial-cyanogenmod-13-0-t3323975
after tinkering for sometime in my Windows 10 64bit it seems that the fastboot drivers don't work in windows 10 (also 8.1) as they are not signed and I didn't want to mess with my main windows install.
So I installed a windows 7 32 bit in a virtual machine (virtualbox), then installed flashtool drivers (selected options for xperia arc, flashtool drivers and fastboot drivers).
then downloaded the latest build of CM13. as the phone already had CM11 I booted into recovery and went into fastboot mode but for some reason I got an error saying 'not able to attach sony device to the virtual machine' or something like that. luckily opening virtualbox as administrator solved the problem and the phone was detected. followed the instructions in the CM13 thread - formatted a 32gb class 10 card (kingston) as ext4 for data partition using minitool partition wizard, then sideloaded the CM13 zip and HDPI gapps. rebooted to system but only CM logo was looping. tried different things but nothing worked. after I removed the card and used a different one (sandisk 32gb class 4 ) and repeated the install, it booted and worked.
as the phone was very slow with CM13 (mainly due to my slow card) I wanted to try if it can be flashed to the original gingerbread ROM. it was very difficult to search for the ROM as almost all links were just dead. my old backups came to the rescue. also for some reason the latest flashtool version in its homepage doesn't install a 32-bit version and also doesn't recognise the ICS firmware ftf file. so installed flashtool v0.9 that I found from my old backups. booted the phone in flash mode and flashed the gingerbread ROM. though it is outdated and not much features the phone was fast. after using it for sometime, flashed the ICS ROM. it also worked as expected. then rooted the phone using eroot (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219711). it also worked and SuperSU was installed in the ICS ROM.
now I came across the lineage 14.1 ROM in the CM13 thread and decided to give it a try. then found out that my option key is not working properly and was not able to enter fastboot mode. fortunately 'adb reboot bootloader' worked and the phone booted into fastboot. flashed the LOS14.1 boot.img and used the same microsd card that I used for CM13. followed similar instruction for the CM13 now using the TWRP recovery for LOS14.1. everything went well and phone booted up. the setup closed a couple of times but then eventually worked. calling, 3g data, wifi working in LOS14.1. as said above due to my slow card the phone is very very slow. I have ordered a sandisk class 10 32gb card. will test with that to see if it is better.
if anyone is looking for India ROM or the old flashtool, ask me I will attach/upload here.

I'm Waiting For Your Phone Speed Test After Hi Speed SD Card

I use Sa**disk class 10 8GB. The rom goes well, didn't good when running many apps in background like instagram or Facebook. Use lite version.
I try run Whatsapp and Spotify, they run well.
I switched to CM 11 since I bought Xperia z3 compact

just slightly better. not much speed improvement. I guess the limited RAM and outdated CPU are real bottlenecks here.

heyif youve rooted this I was wondering if you could send me whatever is in the /sys/kernel file my phone wont initialize hdmi it keeps saying
error: cannot open /sys/kernel/hdmi_sii_kset/hdmi_sii_state_kobj/hdmi_sii_state_obj
so im thinking if I get that file my hdmi will work im on a stock rom , maybe cwm flashing doesnt keep this file however i cannot just repair the firmare as this is a debug phone with debug software according to this site : https://tthtlc.wordpress.com/2011/12/29/playing-with-ftrace-option-on-my-xperia-arc-s/ i should have the file in my sys/kernel so if you could send it to me id love you forever lol this has been driving me nuts

CMod 4.1.999 has slowed my phone to a halt

I was running a G1 with Cyanogen Mod 4.04, Cyanogen Recovery 1.2. I updated to Recovery 1.4, installed the 1.6 .img, installed Cyanogen Mod 4.1.999, ran the fix permissions command in console, and rebooted. It is SOOO slow. Takes between 15 seconds and 1 minute for any button press or screen touch to be recognized. It is completely unusable. I have found a few posts about this, but nothing offered a concrete solution.
I have since done a wipe in console, and reflashed Cyan 4.1.999. It didn't fix anything.
My SD card is properly formatted for apps2sd, as it worked fine in Cyan 4.04.
Any ideas?
try a task manager and see what is running in the background
try ending programs that may be chewing up memory
set up a swap
What do you mean by set up a swap? My SD card already has a main partition, an ext3 partition and a linux swap partition.
you made no mention of your sd partitions
something is most likely hanging up your memory which is why i said check with a task manager
you can always try flashing the adp again and then cyan
when i first went to cy's i had to do that
I'll try the task manager. Based on how slow it is, it may take me a few hours to get it installed.
i got a quick idea, try shutting off your phone, pull out your sd and try rebooting without it and see what happens without apps2sd going
update to ext3 if you are not already
delete your dalvik-cache if you are upgrading from a previous rom and didn't wipe
huh, did you not read his posts, he has ext3 and he has wiped
Don't know if it would make any difference, but maybe try to install HTC and 4.1.99 and then just flash .999 over the top of that.

so just aplogizing before hand
The fact of the matter is that it simply is DEAD SLOW.
His development process is taken from the MS-developers-handbook.... just keep on shovelling on the bloat, and every once in a while release a new version and CLAIM that it is faster than the last, even when it is slower.
Then you get all the little kiddies, who update with every new version, each of which makes no appreciable difference, BUT because the release notes SAY it is faster, and the fact that they can't really tell, the placebo effect tells them that it IS faster. They keep doing this... several times, so the cumulative placebo effect tells them that it *must be WAY faster*, except that with every new version it actually becomes slightly SLOWER, so after MANY MANY "upgrades", what you turn out to have is something FAR FAR slower than the original.
Just to get a feeling for the differences, try out a stock cupcake build, then try FOUR CM cupcake builds that are evenly spaced out (in order), then again try the stock cupcake build. Then try the stock donut build.
If you want a fast donut that supports apps2sd, etc., and doesn't have the insane bloat, take a look at this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456
This ROM is a simple rooted ADP1 donut base, with an "expansion pack" -- from which you can pick and choose the extra features you need/want so as to end up with a system that is optimized to YOUR needs, rather than just packing in everything including the kitchen sink and claiming it is the best thing ever.

I took the time to write this up because i know how frustrating it can be to brick your phone it has happened to me before trying to update it but I've learned how to flash my phone & done it successfully more then 5 times so far so read this careful before trying it out.
you can install this update with Rom Manager worked perfect for me I've installed 3 of Eugene's Froyo updates with this method just make sure you are rooted first & running kernel 2.6.32.9
or use this kernel here below
Vibrant Kernel Back Support for new Builds
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796425
Download Eugene's Froyo 2.2 Macnut update from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820414
here's a step by step on how i did it
1. make sure to back up all your applications first! I used App Saver FREE application from the market. Open App Saver run it & save your applications this app will save them to the internal SD card so look for the folder called app saver copy & paste it to your External SD card using Astro File Manager FREE application on the market.
2. download macnutR5 update to your phone
3. remove external sd card once you back up your applications
4. install paid version of rom manager
5. open rom manager click on the first option flash clockworkMod Recovery choose Galaxy S Vibrant hit allow on super permissions then click ok.
6. click on install ROM from SD card
7. go to your download folder & point it to the MacnutR4 zip folder hit install
8. optional choose back up current Rom & clear date & cache but no necessary
then let it do its thing it might take 3-5 minutes to finish the update i noticed the update went faster when i plugged the phone to a power outlet.
note 1: this update will delete your apps and you will have to start from scratch but if you back up your apps with App Saver you will be fine read step 1.
note 2: once your done make sure to go into settings mobile networks then network mode and choose WCDMA ONLY! if not you will have 3G problems.
enjoy FROYO!
I'm loving froyo running flash 10.1 watching my NFL games from my phone!
is jit working on the newer froyo roms?
If you click on the link to the ROM you would have read:
~ Working jit ( 14 MFLOPS is about all we get.. 16 ish if overclocked to 1.2Ghz)
GPS still not working in Froyo ROMs for vibrant.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I've NEVER removed a memory card to flash, any real reason for adding that step in your guide?
GPS issues should be stated, agreed ^
You should remove your SD card because some ROMs have bugs and have the tendency of wiping it clean.
So what's the purpose of the Kernal? You didn't mention what to do with it.

I've had my SD card wiped before. But it wipes the internal card, not the external so removing that wouldn't do much good.
I'm more intrigued at how you are watching NFL games on your phone!? Link?
^ froyo = flash - sites like atdhe.net work... the nfl app is pretty sweet too.
^^ right, that was my whole point... removing the external sd card seems pointless, hence why I spoke up.

Reboot Android Problem
Hi,
I get the same problem. Havn't quite sussed completely but I do know that when Android loads it creates many new folders on the card. I have found that deleting the one named Android and the one named Android_Secure enables me to then boot.
However the one named Android_Secure is the one I believve contains your downloaded files (I think).
At the moment It is trial and error but at least I do not have to start all over again as you say.....which is what I used to do.
Maybe with this info you can suss out the problem.....for me I am not that savvy...as I say just trial and error.
Good Luck.
Freeze HTC logo at second reboot
Same problem. I can only reboot only one time...at the second reboot it freeze at green htc logo!
I'm going crazy....
I've updete the radio, reformatted sd card and changed vary windows mobile rom's!
Only a doubt...what's the difference from 1Gb and 512 mb data file? I always wait the device to create it....and i alway have a 1gb data file. it's ok?
Tnx and sorry for the poor english!
same prob here but i get the blue screen my solution when runing android ,and you want shut down your phone and get it on again then take out the batery for 4-5 secunds then put it on and boot android
up, just up
Your MicroSD Card may have corrupted flash memory (Bad blocks). Try another MicroSD Card in the device.
got the solution....
i've been having this same problem but managed to find a suitable solution for now.
After the battery has died and you want to re-boot Android again....
Get the battery charged to 10% at least and plug it in to your computer. It will connect via active sync.
Once this is done....
Use the handset to navigate your storage card and delete the folder "Android"
Next, run Haret.
This should work. Once it loads up all of your apps / settings / contacts etc should still work.
Hope that helps?
I just made a new folder on the sd card and moved all the files int o that, then just run haret in the new folder and it started up again.
Try it it worked for me.
I am also having this same problem. I've been running android for about 3 weeks now no problem, bluetopia build v.5. Last night my phone ran completely out of battery so when i finally got back and turned it back on and tried booting up android it shows a few lines, then goes to the image posted above (black screen with green HTC logo). when it ran fine, i was running the latest WM elegancia ROM with radio 2.10.50.xx. Now I flashed to the ENERGY ROM with the latest radio 2.15.50.xx and it still has the same issue. I formatted my SD card and i put the latest 1.05 bluetopia build on it..still no success..PLEASE HELP I HATE WINDOWS MOBILE IT SUCKS SO BAD COMPARED TO ANDROID
Hi guys,
the SAME problem! but, I've realised that - it takes over 20min to boot up to yours previous AnDroid_OS. Before that I was thinking that it will never showes up.
I'm using 1GB data file, so it takes a bit longer than expected.
Hope you'l try to be more patient
Good luck

Are you sure about this cause the android folder contains haret.exe and i think other system files necessary to run android. Correct me if i am wrong. tried this myself but got an error "haret.exe was not found..."
I have currently 2 HD2´s here,
i tested it many times and it looks like
the device is killing sometimes files on SD Card if it ist turning off.
Device 1 have a 16GB C6 card
Device 2 have a 8GB C2 card
Both devices atm with MDJ Revolution 1.7 S6.1
I format both cards and make a clean install
both devices start up (at same speed) and working finde
i power off both devices , and start again ..
Device 1 now is starting 20 secounds faster than device 2
i power off both devices , and start again ..
Device 1 is starting, but i get multiple errors (app crashes)
Device 2 is not longer starting ( HTC Logo )
i put out both sd card and try 2 copy files 2 PC
it issnt possible , on both cards some files are corrupt (diffrent files)

What I learned about upgrading to a 16GB SD Card

What To Know When Getting a Bigger SD Card I found out the hard way after getting a 16GB PNY Class 10 card for my x10. I had my backups and all that. I copied from the old card to the new one. Then things began acting odd. process.android.media error was really bothering me on startup. So I looked around and found a few suggestions, like clear data drom download manager and media storage. These didnt help at all. I got to looking around under the app management, because I noticed a few app shortcuts were gone. So it was a step in the right direction. I clicked the on SD card tab, started scrolling and said well the last app I moved was this... so I clicked it and went to move it back to the internal memory. It errored out and said something to the effect it was not installed. I went on a witch hunt from that point forward. Apparently Gingerbread will let you know something is amiss. It will have a generic icon and or a checkmark next to the app. I figured thus far the ones with a checkmark could be moved, the ones with a generic icon, were missing and therefore I had to click on each one and uninstall. After doing this all was well. As I really didnt want to move every app back to the internal storage, besides I would have ran out of room too.
The first mistake I realized I made was that, I should have busted out the sd card reader. I was doing this at my mothers and said well its easier. No... Because of the swapping and therefore powercycling the x10. The os scanned or tried to load some apps. There is where it all started going downhill. I thought well I am staying on the same rom, whats the harm.
Important steps / tips I learned.
1. Use a card reader, to transfer all files from old to new card. This also helps with making sure you have a backup too.
2. Consider uninstalling all apps from sdcard, or move them. Depending on situation. I use Titanium Backup & My BackUp Root, so I opt for uninstalling them.
3. Restore your uninstalled apps, or move them back afterwards.
4. Find an app or script to verify all apps are installed correctly? (Dont know if it exists) Otherwise launch each one or verify there are no missing icons or checkmarks present.
Now on to the new adventure of partitioning. I have came across some tips here and there. None really all that dramatic. I am still looking for a guide/line for setting up more than 2 partitions. This is how I have my desktop, but android is a little different. So far I have learned that if you use a Mac, you should bootcamp, dualboot, VM, or boot a linux cd for partitioning. I have not found the right app or terminal commands to make it easier to do. Perhaps I need a better rom. I am fairly happy with zmodv3 hotfix 3. I also think the unlocked bootloader is a blessing and a curse (kernel hell). I still like the CM based ROMS, but am thoroughly turned off by all this MIUI stuff. I may own a Mac, but think iphones are shaat.

Suggestions and links are welcome. Please no flaming or bashing about what I have wrote. We all know about opinions.... Besides I have to sart posting sooner or later.
After some more tinkering 11/11/11- I have discovered that there is an issue with xrec 0.3gb ready, on zmod hotfix3. If you use xrec to make a full backup after reboot there is that error again. This can be resolved by clearing market and storage data. It works fine via CWM 4or5 recovery.

There are a few guides on that. Use windows or a linux based boot cd. Make 2 partitions and they must be primary fat32 (safest). It depends on the phone really. Have not used a 32GB, allot say it works fine and some out there say no. If you need exact walkthru just google it.

I am not very happy with my rom right now, will be changing. But that is a good Idea to reinstall the rom. I just didnt want to wipe everything for a rom Im not real happy with. I had to get a bigger card to make a backup with. The shuffling from x10 to desktop was really bothersome.

Windows 11 on windows yogabook

Does anyone here have made the update to windows 11 on a windows yogabook ?
I've try this and with help of MediaCreationTool.bat i was able to overpass the processor compatibility.
It donwload the update, run all the install but at the end of this process i Come with an error and the update process colse to delete all this work, coming with just a windows 10 after all.
When the update finish i have 2 type of error
attempted write to readonly memory
Or
Error in safe_os with an error on Boot operator
Don't know why i have this error and how to fix it.
I try on a fresh install with my old files and already try to à New clean install, but all this try i already have an error....
Does anybody here have this error and can clear it to made the update or run the windows 11 update without problems on a yogabook ?
Nope, I was not facing any issues with the Install. (sorry, don't ask for a guide as there already are hundreds of it. Google it)
Furthermore, I am already testing WSA and it's surprisingly working fluid. You obviously get the 4GB warning but once WSA is fully loaded it's "bingo". (check OneDrive & Adobe Draw running side by side). I had 5 Apps running at the same time but the process usage in the Taskmanager was not freaking out (if you compare it to Bluestacks etc) !
And yes, pen works perfectly in the Android Apps...

Did you try to start in safe mode and run "mdsched.exe" ? (Usually pressing F8 right after the lenovo bios logo appears, but you will probably need and external usb keyboard for this)
@jamespmi
Thanks for your time and your help.
For the BIOS update Yes it directly come from the lenovo site (the only update aviable so i can't make mistake).
I just try to make a full run of mdsched.exe in safe mode (really hard to keep a usb keyboard cause my 2 wireless keyboard wasn't reconnised in safe mode) and no error after the check...
I really don't understand what can block the W11 update on my yogabook.
Also try to install with desableing all non essentiel app and service at startup..... No more result.....
The only option i do not try is to make the update in safe mode (don't know if it's possible...)

typing this from my W11 yoga book... i used the reg tweak as described in this article and just started upgrading by opening the ISO in W10 https://pureinfotech.com/install-windows-11-unsupported-pc/
Needed to install some drivers again, but overall it works okay. Just disable all animations. Because our old tablet just can't handle those any more.
is there any benefit in using vw11 instead of w10 in performance terms? I would go for w11 but only performance driven as WSL is running fine ;-)
