[GUIDE] Android 9 Pie AOSP phh-treble ROM - Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

The purpose of this thread is to describe treble ROM installation process for Mi Max 3 with specific detail for AOSP phh-treble, for a user to be able to get all required instructions in one place.
What does not work (everything else is supposed to be working):
VoLTE (did not have a chance to verify, reported for other GSI ROMs)
Stock camera does not auto-rotate photos (use third party camera)
Equalizer (MusicFX)
Disclaimer: Everything you do is your own risk. GSI is ARB-agnostic, since it does not contain firmware.
Prerequisites:
Bootloader unlocked
Data backed up (factory reset is required in the process). NB: if you had screen locked while backing up with recovery, this guide to reset the lock may be helpful some day in the future
TWRP 3.2.3 (other recoveries may work as well) installed
Xiaomi.eu Android Pie ROM installed
Note:Xiaomi.eu with Android Pie is required.
Skills required:
TWRP - flash zip files
Archive tool (like ZArchiver, to unpack XZ system image)
Steps:
Choose and download the "arm64-aonly" system image - with or without root and gapps. I used system-arm64-aonly-vanilla-nosu.img.xz from phh-treble releases page
Decompress system image using archiver tool, we need .img to flash
Download opengapps x64 nano or pico for Android Pie (this step is for vanilla system)
Download phh-treble-pie-fixes-minimal.zip for Bluetooth, camera2 and vendor fingerprint (the file is attached to FP)
Make sure your data is backed up
Make sure Xiaomi.eu ROM is already installed, or reinstall using respective instructions
Reboot to recovery
Install - select image type - select phh-treble .img file - select system partition - install
Install - select zip type - select opengapps archive - install (for vanilla image, this is not needed for image with pre-baked gapps)
Install - (make sure /vendor is mounted) select zip type - select phh-treble-pie-fixes-minimal.zip from this post below (to fix brightness, camera2 api and bluetooth)
Factory reset, note: google setup needs gapps-su build or you can dirty flash (restore /data from backup)
Reboot system, fingers crossed for several minutes. If the system does not boot for 2 minutes, you probably did not perform some step correctly
bonus material: one can re-arrange soft buttons following instructions from this post https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...icons-or-re-arrange-the-buttons-without-root/
bonus material: one can adjust auto brightness by issuing "settings put system screen_auto_brightness_adj 0.4" via ADB shell, where 0.4 is any value between -1 and 1
Note: to completely unroot, execute /system/bin/phh-securize.sh via adb root shell
Thank you!

So if I have Xiaomi.eu stable and go back to beta 8.10.25 (with ARB activated) I will be able to install this AOSP ROM ?
Before MI MAX 3 I got a OP3 so ARB is my nightmare.
I am dreaming of AOSP ROM installed. Is much better than that MIUI.

Yes, you can. Treble roms can be installed on ARB and NON-ARB roms.

Battery life looks decent so far

So is it safe to install 8.1 ROM on 9.0 too?

Tried both phh-treble 8.1 and 9.0. GSI roms can be flashed one over another (factory reset may still be required for downgrade 9->8.1)

Hi @galev_90, it's stable with known issues - bluetooth and brightness need a fix described in the first post. MTP (usb file transfer) does not work (the patch may exist, did not try any), volte - probably does not work.
To get more specific instructions, one needs to explain what is not clear from what is already described. It may be helpful to read phh-treble thread by phhusson as well.

Link pleased.

It is not in this forum.Maybe link will be problem..

Instruction updated for latest Xiaomiu.eu baseline. MTP is fixed in 8.11.29 vendor.
Patch prepared for direct flashing via TWRP.

What does the patch do?
Edit: nevermind - found it in the OP: phh-treble-pie-fixes.zip - fixes auto brightness and bluetooth

During testing when I flashed back to stock b164 I used unmodified Ssu beta 3 for rooting, there is one user in Ssu beta thread who has problems with latest beta on his p10. What kind of modification if I may ask?
A friend of mine made the modifications. (@tecolate) take a look here:

huawei should have a cross development forum thread like sony devices, it would be easier to find relevant information, I have to flash back to stock and root with beta 3, I don't remember any problems on my side, he has problems with security(pin code, fingerprint).
Hi There.
Succesfully installed. I have issues with the Gallery.. If I open it it says insufficient storage space....
Also MiXplorer shows what looks like encrypted folders in the Internal Storage section???
Any help would be appreciated.
Did you format your data partition before you flashed this?
Pretty nice
So it seems that installing and flashing Huawei devices is quite the hassle.
Issues I currently experience on this ROM:
Cannot open Gplay not opening.
Plugging in usb cable into windows or linux doesn't get recognised.
I will update with more details later today
update:
reformatted /data /system and reinstalled, no more issues!
Rom works fine, as fine as could be expected of a rooted stock rom.
Here is a script for L09 User.
Just install Rom and Data Files from start post and then this zip file.
Its untested because my tester have only L29 devices. But it should work.

Hello
How i can activate voLTE?
Added Magisk Version.

A very big thanks to @funiewski for a lot of testing
Have installed and all is working great. There's only 1 issue that I'm facing. The first time I change my wallpaper on the homescreen, there are many lines that will appear on the wallpaper. Anyone facing this? The lockscreen and app drawer area is fine. Anyone can advice? I would prefer my home screen wallpaper to be clean.

So far the Rom is running great!
When I open Magisk Manager and try to install Magisk, I get an error that the zip file could not be extracted.
Any ideas?
Check the MagiskManager Folder. Is there the zip?

Should I flash the zip via TWRP?

[GUIDE] How To Install Android Pie on Xiaomi Mi Note 3

Hello guys, after the release of the Android Oreo kernel sources for our Mi Note 3, amazing things are happened for our device. (you know also) One of them is Project Treble support. So this means we can install Android Pie to our device by using a GSI image :victory:
And I'll show you how to do this in this guide
Let's go :highfive:
1- Install a Treble supported ROM, but DO NOT boot the device yet!
I used @dianlujitao 's Lineage OS 15.1
Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-note-3/development/rom-lineageos-15-1-xiaomi-mi-note-3-t3839892
I won't show you how to install it, because I don't want to make the thread boring. You can learn how to install it from the thread of the ROM.
2- Download a Android Pie GSI ROM (ARM64 - A Only) from the Project Treble section which you like (and extract the .img file): https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble
I downloaded Pixel Experience by @EnesSastim
3- Download this modified TWRP: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-ERWkwCGm4cOIN6sYrpHgg332kjEz74f
4- Reboot to bootloader and install the TWRP.
5- Boot to recovery.
6- Go to "Install" and select "Install Image".
7- Select your Android Pie GSI ROM.
8- Select "System Image" only and start flashing.
9- Restart system when flashing process is completed.
10- TA DA! Enjoy Your Android Pie Custom ROM! :victory:
11- NECESSARY FOR USING LTE: For LTE, dial *#*#4636#*#* from dialer, go to phone info and select a network type that includes LTE
IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you select "LTE only" without VoLTE working, you can't make or receive any calls. I'm using "LTE/WCDMA" because of this.
12- Optional: Change the DPI from developer settings [Mi Note 3's default is 403 (according to AIDA64), but you can use a higher value if you want to see things smaller]

Bugs:
- MTP and PTP is not working, if you want to copy a file to your phone's storage, you need to boot to TWRP.
- NFC never works on all of the GSI ROM installed devices because every device that supports Treble doesn't have NFC (maybe there is a fix, you can tell me)
- Hotspot is not working, use USB Tethering
- VoLTE is not working on me. Maybe it can work on different operators. You can test it and let me know results :highfive:
- Screen mirroring is not working
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR GCAM:
Before using GCam, you need to flash this via TWRP: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262904000690
Working GCam APK: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/...leCamera-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V8_Aux-5beta.apk by @fu24 (Everything works well and also includes wide-angle lens feature :good: )
Benchmark tests :victory: :
AnTuTu Benchmark:
Our device takes its place at 49th :good:
Geekbench CPU Benchmark:
Geekbench Compute Benchmark:
Thanks to:
@dianlujitao (For bringing Treble for our cool device )
@EnesSastim (For developing Pixel Experience Android Pie GSI that I used in this guide)
@fu24 (For GCam :highfive: )
Have a nice day and enjoy your Android Pie!
Good
Thanks. It is perfect working.

Hi, can you tell me what are the steps to go back to miui eg. xiaomi.eu rom from Gsi rom?
Wipe system, data, cache, dalvik, vendor. Install MiuiEu.zip.
Or
Flash ChinaDev with MiFlash(without locking BL), install twrp, install MiuiEu. @zaqm

Thanks, can I also restore my backup? Is the gsi rom good for daily driver, any major bugs and should the Camera fix in first post be flashed no matter of gsi rom?
Thanks, zaqm
I don't use GSI, GCam on MiNote3 - I can't help with this. @zaqm
Restore Backup - after install MiuiEu - of course.
Without install - I'm not sure - wipe system, cache, dalvik, data, vendor and try restore your backup.

The Mi Note 10 Lite (toco) has been with us for not that long but has proved to be a pretty awesome device. There is also not much development on the device as at the time of writing this article but @mauronofrio has managed to build a Test-TWRP that you can learn more about HERE. Toco launched with Android 10 out of the box which brings about dynamic partitioning which TWRP has not yet supported. The good thing is that this has not prevented us from being able to tinker with the device once you have the bootloader unlocked. I have managed to set up a GSI on my unit and I will lay out the process I followed here for any other user who want to try.

This is the first, simple and MOST RECOMMEDED method to fix Audio Stutter is to navigate to Settings > Phh Treble Settings > Misc features > and tick the "Disable audio effects" option as shown with the attached image. This method will have all the audio working including the Bluetooth Audio. I fiddled with the various options and got to this fix and thank you to @alex.msk-dev for testing to confirm this fix. 09/07/2020

Seems you have a driver issue that is why you are stuck at that waiting message. I faced a similar issue and what I did was to disable driver signature enforcement on my Windows 10 and then installing the drivers. You can also substitute the fastboot -w command with going to the stock recovery and performing a factory reset.

twrp recovery for mi a2 always stuck logo, maybe only some unofficial twrp versions are working

To flash this ROM, you already know that you have to unlock the bootloader. I think it has been unlocked
the way to install this custom ROM is not difficult so it doesn't bootlop this way
What is certain is there must be a PC. Xiaomi mi a2 must be in fastboot mode, connect to PC, open the folder (mininal adb and fastboot) in C program copy twrp to the folder open cmd type command?
fastboot devices and enter (fastboot boot twrp.img)
and enter wait a moment. If you have entered TWRP, don't unplug the cable, copy the TWRP img file. to Mi A2 touch install select img, then there will be a menu option swipe down select (recovery ramdisk)
when it's finished, touch reboot, select reboot recovery, if it says the OS is not installed, just ignore it and start again to twrp recovery
tap wipe format data type (yes) and select advanced wipe dalvik / cache / data / system.
touch the reboot menu select the slot from B to A. repeat again (wipe)
When finished, touch the reboot menu, select the slot again, move to B and reboot recovery, if it says the OS is not installed, just ignore it.
If you have entered recovery again, copy the custom rom pixel experience file to mi a2 from the PC. well, we just installed it and swipe the rom, wait for it to be done and reboot the system, don't panic, when it reboots, it will return to recovery, touch reboot, select slot A, then select system
as usual just ignore it if it says OS is not installed , okay just slide it . wait if successful only 1 minute less boot flashes
Please share where you got those builds from. I hope people do not want to install random files on their phones...
Did you build the ROM yourself from sources? Did you leak some private test build? ... Give some info, so people can verify the source.
The same with the TWRP img. Where is it from? What version is it? Who built it? Is there some special reason to not just use the most actual, official one (yes it gets stuck)?
I installed mi rom for xiaomi mi A2 ( jasmine_sprout ) not for random device, . All sources are on YouTube and Google. .

That's like saying all sources are on the internet ._.
Basically the problem is, how does a person that install this know that there are no hidden viruses in those files?
Is there proof that a trusted developer created them? Did you create them? Did the person on the youtube video create them? ...?

Hey iusmac, thanks for getting back on this so fast. I tried flashing the rom too as well but it still says no network detected.
I have manually tried inputting APN as well doesnt work.
Any ideas to work around? Aside from this everything is perfect already

Reflash to Nougat, unlock bootloader again, Flash Orange Fox, and follow steps above to flash rom. So far this is breathing in new life into this phone. Thanks TS.
Added:
So far found 1 issue, I tried put in MicroSD can and once I select the 2nd option(use SD as app storage) it loads till 24% and stays in bootloop till I remove the MicroSD card.
Now whenever I try put in the microsd card it will bootloop

这是我用过最好用的rom
简直不要太爽
在中国大陆 没有推送服务 程序依然可以流畅运行
现在有个问题
汉化不完全
其他几乎完美
很难想象一部6年前的手机 可以完美运行android 13
谢谢你

Flash both, order doesn't matter. These need to be flashed once after leaving MIUI or custom ROMs based on Android 10 or lower.
