Will there be official tools to unlock bootloader to restore the Tmo back to Stock - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

I hate the Tmobile Boot screen honestly, and I would rather unlock the one, believe it or not I'm trading in my one plus one and finally upgrading to a new phone. Its a great deal, but I need that unadulterated android experience to set it back to the international software. Is it likely that we will get official tools to help us get back the international software straight from OnePlus?

I seriously doubt oneplus would jeopardize their relationship with tmobile by officially handing you a tool to let you de-tmobilize their phone.

Wait for credits to kick in, pay off the balance and after day 40, request a SIM unlock, followed by bootloader unlock.
That's my plan.

Don't the credits only pay off the rest of phone over 24 months meaning you need to wait 2 years before you can request an unlock?

You're right! That was a mistake on my part. You pay in full and wait for the credit to come in over 2 years.

I was told I was free to pay it off early and get the unlock code, and the credits would still continue to apply.

I was told the same. The best way is to wait till credit start kicking in first and then pay it off.

AT&T Flat out refusing to Unlock my phone

I paid full price for my phone, I have called and spoken to 5 different AT&T Reps and every single one of them either tells me "we cant do it" or that the "code isnt available" . With the new law thing i though if you paid full non contract price for a phone they were obligated to unlock for you?

I would speak to a manager. Did you buy the phone directly from them? Most unlocking services have the codes in their systems now so there is no way AT&T doesn't have the code.

I would try an online chat with technical support. That is how I got my code for my Galaxy S3.
Funny thing is, I remember AT&T stating that they unlocked phones anyway and the new law was unnecessary.

Apparently you cant gain access to online support unless you have an Att account... which i do not as i am not an ATT customer.
i finally found a way to get a hold of someone via live chat and this is what i was told
"Tana Kimble: I do apologize Teddy, your device has to be at least 30 days old before the unlock codes are released to us."

I work for AT&T, and we usually don't unlock new phones for the first 6 months a phone is out. Especially with a flagship phone.
Your best bet is to go through a 3rd party and just suck it up and pay for the unlock.
AT&T is under no obligation to give you an unlock code. They do it strictly as a courtesy.
I dont know if this helps, but when i bought my note 2 last november after it came out... i did so off contract and i ran into the same issue. AT&T reps typically seem like they get the codes 30-90 days after a product comes out and then theyll happily unlock it for you.. it seems like they aren't going to or arent able to unlock a brand new phone that just released.
Search is your friend. There are several unlock methods ive seen posted on xda.
delete
Ran into this today, CS rep flat out told me that it was impossible to unlock the AT&T version of the Galaxy S IV.
I was giving serious thought to returning my ATT S4 and buying a TMOBILE S4 (which doesn't have a locked boot loader) and then using it on ATT. TMOBILE Is heavily promoting that they don't lock you into contracts and will unlock your phone if you leave. When I contacted TMOBILE and asked if I could buy an S4 outright and then get it unlocked so I could use it on ATT they said they could do it - but that I had to wait 60 days after buying the phone to get it unlocked. Seemed kind of heavy handed to me - if I paid full price for the phone why would they make me wait 60 days?
@ att. Rep... I got my sgs3 un-locked when I got it in July/ Aug. No way after 6 months. And it was no problem

Thats so weird. I just bought mine and its unlocked after talking to a rep. I think you just need to get lucky and speak to thr right person. I didn't use my upgrade I just purchased it straight out. Oh I did mention I was going overseas and that this is the only phone I have.

Courtesy?
My question is this and as you say you work for AT&T so you might be able to give me a straight answer... If I DON'T get the phone at a contract price and pay the $639.99 why should AT&T care what I do with the phone then? I can understand them not wanting to share codes for a subsidized phone but full retail? What do they loose by not sharing the code? With the prevalence of services like cellunlocker.net they don't have the ability to keep the device on lock down.
I just don't get the big deal assuming one opts to pay full non-contract price.

I have no desire to unlock or root. But I'm in for $50 too. What does it mean.. Temp root?
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Wish I had a Verizon pixel. I upgraded to fi after being on Verizon since 2009. Never going back to those guys.
Count me for $50... Thought I could live without root, but life sucks without it.
There have been a few interesting Linux priv escalation vulnerabilities. I think temp root is definitely within the realm of possibility.
As for what is meant by temp root. I assume one that doesn't need to persist across reboots. As soon as root is achieved theoretically you can change the prop file that contains the ability to unlock the bootloader, flip it, reboot and you're in.
I've been meaning to do a bit of kernel probing, but working at a startup consumes a LOT of my time.

You linked to the bulletin, not a specific vuln.
But again, I'm not looking to write an root exploit for a vuln, I'm saying if someone provides an exploit we will do the unlock part.
The unlock part is the easy bit . Don't worry though, I wasn't suggesting you or anyone specific to write the exploit. To be honest I don't think anyone has written one for this particular vulnerability, nor do I think there is time to do it as it's already been patched I believe.
My point was it's not as hopeless as it's made out to be, and it definitely can be done. There are exploits that come up all the time, it's a matter of writing up the code for it, and testing it in time. Sadly, my skillset lies much more in the operations side of computing and I suck with code (been a sys admin in some form or another for years now).
I would love to pitch in $50, but I'm struggling a bit financially at the moment so I don't know if I can commit haha. Let me know when it gets done though and I'll see if I can swing it at that time!
I can't stand Verizon having so much control over my phone, and especially now that that law passed, and they're going to be force installing apps to track my every move so they can sell it to advertisers, I need root now more than ever.. Please please someone get this done!
Put me down for $50. I'll keep tabs on this thread.
@mrjaydee82,
Maybe we need a separate bounty for temproot first?

Do you know why some Pixels have the oem switch grayed out and some do not, even though they are on Verizon? I don't even care to unlock the bootloader I'm just curious. The only reason I'd like the switch to be active is to one day, when the phone is a secondary device, be able to do a full factory image flash after which I'd relock the bl in all likelihood. It's been suggested to reverse engineer the OS in order to find out but that is simply beyond my knowledge at this point.
Personally I do not need it as mine is already unlocked from the first exploit. But for those needing it, my question would be if this is done would the exploit be kept alive or would it be turned in to Google for them to just to patch it on the next update ? I know on exploits for the HTC flagships they keep the exploits going for s-off and do not turn them in hopefully any exploit found would be kept open for pixel and XL users the same and not get turned in to be taken away by Google.
+1 for $50 into the bounty

Sprint One Year Free - Essential Phone?

Hi,
has anyone used the BYOD one year of free service on sprint? I'm currently with USmobile, and apparently that makes me eligible for this plan. That'd basically pay for the phone in savings, which sounds great, but I'm wondering if anyone else has used it? Anything that one would have to take into account taking the unlocked Essential Phone to Sprint?
i have the bYOD free year using sprint and now with the essential phone. I switched over from my pixel.
I am however getting a terrible signal and non existent 4g speeds, currently researching to see if i can do anything about this! Right now, i wish i had my pixel still...
i did byod with an essential phone... and it must have relocked it. when going into settings to unlock (while on the free plan and after waiting the required time frame) it would not unlock. i tried contacting customer support and it said it could only be unlocked by the original owner. then after more back and forth said it was already unlocked. so what i determined was putting it back on sprint RE-locked it, but their system was so messy that it showed it as unlocked.

there was a sale, sprint was selling them for $150, and you could pay it off early, unlock them and leave sprint. a lot of people did that, and then later sprint changed the terms of having to wait x amount of days to unlock them. my first one was probably one of these (got it off ebay). It might only involve those that were sold at that greatly discounted price. easiest way to tell if it is still unlocked is to put a different carrier sim and see what happens, otherwise look for something called uicc unlock. i think if it is relocked you have to wait 45 days to unlock it. I eventually gave up asking sprint customer support, and just did this https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75994498&postcount=360 to unlock it

A few questions for the TMobile Variant

I'm pretty much sold on the thing, since I can unload my 3T at the same time--but a few questions first.
1: Can anyone test Samsung gear watches with the phone? I've read Samsung pay only works if you sideload the gear app, but would prefer it working 100% since I plan on staying unrooted.
2: VPNs have caused some issues on past carrier phones, basically using hotspot data rather than regular data. Can anyone just run a quick test to make sure this isn't the case? Mostly for use of Blokada.
3: Does RCS work? I know TMobile was rolling it out by device, but it seems this would be the perfect time to add it with the 6T.
Thanks!

1. Setup my gear s3 and it works perfectly. Everything is sideloaded as you install from the galaxy Wearable app.
2. This device already seems to have a private VPN set up as default, didn't touch it but it gives you the option to add.
3. RCS I'm assuming does not work and depends on tmobile actually activating them over an OTA update.

My TMobile version does not have the hold power button down to activate Google Assistant feature. Is everyone else missing this?
I got some tmobile variant questions aswell?
Im from México but my brother is on vacation in USS.. in thinking on buying the oneplus but im a little confused about unlocking the phone... Some people say i have to use it with tmobile for 40 days to be able to unlock it even if i make the full pay for it.. othe people say you can unlock it the same day you full pay for it with the tmobile app..
So, can someone confirm who is correct with this because i wont like my brother to buy me the phone and then cant use it because of locked sim..
Also another question.. do you know if later we could install the international firmware on the tmobile version and get the updates directly from oneplus??

1) SIM Unlocking:
YMMV,only way you'll know for certain is trying it yourself. My recent experiences w/Customer Care lead me to believe they'll accommodate you.
2) Int'l ROM flashing onto a T-Mobile variant.
No,that is not possible. Perhaps some aftermarket ROM will be available later, but,no ,not at this time, official,or,otherwise.
Updates will come from T-Mobile.
If you're gonna buy it outright, why bother w/T-Mobile anyway, just skip the hassles & go for the unlocked version.....................

Because TMobile will allow you to buy the phone for 280 out the door with an approved trade-in device.
This is my current situation....I like to tinker and flash ROMs/mods. Hopefully if I end up with the Tmo version, I'll still be able to flash custom ROMs once development gets going for the device.

Well it looks like I'll be ordering from OP directly. It seems if I pay 280 and get the device I'll still pay 12 dollars and change a month until I hit the 570 mark to have the device "paid in full." I guess the 300 dollars goes towards savings on the bill. I read comments on here saying even if you buy the phone from TMobile, in order to "buy it outright" you still have to pay the full price of the phone. I need an unlocked bootloader and root so I guess I'll just pay OP directly.

Yeah it's really only a good deal if you're already or going to stay a T-Mobile customer. You wait a couple of months for the billing discount to kick in and you pay off your device in full. After that you'll still get your discount every month and you'll be able to unlock your sim card and unlock your bootloader.

I am a TMobile customer and plan on staying with them. Flashing the latest updates is kind of a big deal to me....I've been a Nexus/pixel user for years and am not use to being locked down by carrier restrictions when it comes to unlocking devices. I just don't feel like dealing with the clutter and hassle of having sift through the carrier's rules before doing what I want with my phone.

I agree, and I'm the exact same way. I've been on T-Mobile forever and have had a Nexus device since the Nexus 4. I had a Galaxy 4 for work and hated it.
This is my first carrier device pretty much ever. Before the Nexus 4 I was using the HTC HD2 and before that I was using Palm Windows and Palm OS devices.
Pretty much the way I see it is if this is too much of a pain, I can always sell it and go with my original plan of getting a used Pixel 2 XL on swappa.
I'll give it a chance. The price was just too good to pass. And I'm fairly confident in OP's laziness on locking down this phone. I have a feeling it will be pretty simple to swap over to the international rom, and if not, at most we'll have to wait a day for someone to repack the official rom removing the modem and/or bootloader. And if not, on to swappa it goes.

Is this a rant? Carrier always push update slow. I don't mind at all. At least you don't have bloatware lol

Ahhh no no don't get me wrong. I love my 6T is just that I thought maybe it would be different with this device.
And yea, no bloatware at all. Battery life amazing, I can't wait to get the new update plus gestures

Depending on how bad you want the latest build....you could always unlock the Sim, apply for an unlock token and unlock the bootloader. From there you can fastboot flash the latest 9.0.5 images as many users have done already.

Oh yeah, Believe me. If I had the money to completely pay the device I would.
Sadly I pay it monthly for now has I can't afford to pay it completely. I have the device thanks to a friend, if not I would be stuck on my Xperia XA2 lol
i cashed in with the 300$ off deal!! called and threated to disconnect my T-Mobile digits line. T-Mobile rep unlocked my 6t on the spot over the phone. sent my request for unlock token from oneplus on the 9th... Hopefully I get the email today so I can bump my 6t to 9.0.5.. T-Mobile is definitely taking long to release their version but at least they told us they were. maybe they will push it out today..... 9.0.5 runs better and has the November android security.
Mine is totally unlocked, haven't paid anything but the tax on launch day.. running 9.05 loving it..

I would love, but they deny my petition to unlock the phone. Does it even work with the Temporary Unlock? I have unlocked my phone till the 13th of December
Also, what maked you think that today they are going to update today? Did I miss something?

You might have to be a little more aggressive like threaten to cancel your service or something if they don't unlock the phone tell them you're leaving the country and you must have it unlocked immediately ??

Agreed with the other folks on here. Just gotta be straight honest or total bull to get it. I haven't made a single payment on my device, did the $300 trade-in deal and my second attempt was successful by going through their Facebook T-Force team. Told them I wanted to unlock bootloader but that required the phone to be fully unlocked. Also told them I have been a customer for 16+ years. Tenure is what got me what I wanted. That's also gotten me free SIM cards and free next day shipping on purchases. Just adapt your approach to whatever fits you best.

I'm right now with a T-Force employee on twitter. ( Fingers crossed)
Let's see if I can convince them thanks for the tips. I been with T-Mobile for 5+ years now. Never have an unlocked phone from them
Let's see how it goes.
I tried maybe 5 times now... Called in / Facebook / online chat..... They will not unlock without device paid off and more than 40days service
I'm on EIP customer 10yrs plus and no luck
Only reason I want root is viper anyway.....ugh

Ask to talk to a supervisor. I can't imagine you being with them for a decade that they won't do the same for you that they did for me.
Here is the gist copy of my convo on facebook messenger:
ME: Hello, was wondering if someone could help me with an unlock. I'm just looking to unlock bootloader but apparently you can't do that without a full unlock initiated by you guys. I've been a customer for over 16 years and have no plans to leave, just want an unlocked bootloader to play with some extra stuff I have used for years. My number is ###-###-####.
TMO:Hey there Andrew! Thanks for taking the time to reach out to us. My name is Chris, and I'll be your #MagentaExpert today, and I'm eager to help out anyway I can! Before we can unlock any phone it has to meet certain eligibility requirements, and I can definitely check on that for you. Can you follow our secure link, so I can pull up all the details. Also what's the IMEI number for the OnePlus 6T? Let me know once you've had a chance to follow the link. *ChrisScott
***sent my IMEI and accepted the invite link through facebook***
ME:I understand the requirements for unlock, which are likely there to make sure people don't get devices under a deal and cut/run, but I can assure you I am not going anywhere as my tenure with T-Mobile affords me a very pleasant experience with support or really any other requests I may have.
TMO:Thanks for following the link for me! I'm pulling up all the details right now, so bear with me for just one moment please. Thanks! *ChrisScott
TMO:Thanks for your patience! Normally a phone needs to be on the account for at least 40 days, but I'm going to make an exception this time around because you've been apart of our family for a very longtime! I did process the override, so you should be able to follow these steps https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-38913 to complete the unlock. Let me know if you run into any trouble. In regards to the 9.0.5 there's no date set for the release, but as soon as it is available you should receive a push notification to your phone so you can update it. *ChrisScott

I got a reply just now... Crossing my fingers...ugh
Yeah, just found them at default. They can be a little slow on the reply. https://www.facebook.com/TMobile/
