Which one is currently (Oct-2018) the best XT907 Custom ROM to use? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good afternoon!
Well, after being loyal to this Motorola for a couple years, I finally got on my hands a XT907 with Android 4.1 (that means I can unlock bootloader for free! YAY!)
Since something like January 2017, I want to have a higher Android version on a Motorola RAZR M. Back then, I had a couple ROMs on a list what I wanted to test. However, I got a XT907 capable of this 22 months later
So, now what we are on 2018 and things evolved a lot, I want to hear suggestions: Which one is, for you, right now, the best Custom ROM to use for a daily use? That means this XT907 will be my principal phone, so I'll use from Office Suite to Hotspot (Short words: I need a ROM fully functional).
Thanks in advance :highfive:

I have recently flashed CRDroid Android 7.1.2 shared by DiamondJohn, it looks great with Overclocking and extra customization, so far there is no bug apparently, and being on unlocked bootloader means you can switch to any rom after testing, i had cm 12.1 before this which restart it self randomly after somedays, so def Android 7.1.2 is so faar good one.

I see. I just installed to my mother XT912 LineageOS 14.1, and that is my first experience seeing a non-stock ROM on a Motorola hahaha
Just wondering: You need to overclock CRDroid Android 7.1.2 for it to run smoothly? Or I can just install it to run it well?
I don't have much experience going deeper on customization. The farthest I have went is Xposed Framework in Motorola, and Custom ROM/Kernel in Samsung

crDroid is the best android experience, but for the fastest and smoothest non android experience Sailfish OS 2.1 is the way to go.

Thank you! For now, I'm using CrDroid and my phone has been a bit laggy sometimes. However, nothing to worry about (for now).
Thanks for both answers!

Hows your battery so far ?
i was using CrDroid 7.1.2 , but as everyone know Lineage OS 14.1 and all other Nougat Rom have problems with battery calibration on our devices so i reverted back to Marshmallow Lineage OS 13, so far battery is working alright but not as good as Lollipop, so i might revert back to Kitkat Bootloader and then CM 12.1 after somedays.

My battery is running out faster than usual, but that isn't a problem for me (for now). I overclocked it with Kernel Adiutor (yeah, 'Adiutor') and it's working fine!

UK GT-I9505: Is there a Cyanogenmod 12 or 12.1 nightly?

I'll admit I get completely baffled with all the S4 variants.
1. Put simply is there a UK GT-I9505 Cyanogenmod 12 or 12.1 nightly?
2. What's device name to Cyanogenmod call it?
My GT-I9505 is from Everything Everywhere in the UK (who still haven't released lollipop).
Thanks
1. Yes.
2. jfltexx.
Perfect. Thanks.
jfltexx Snapshots stopped in February 2014 with M3. Which is weird as my LG G Pad last got a stable build in November 2014 with M12. That's a bit worrying if I want a stable/reliable CM build.
p.s. Stable being used generally. I'm aware CM used to use Stable as a specific naming convention.

Nightlies are more stable then the snapshots. So don't let naming misguide you. Just go for either the nightlies or the one in my signature. Ps go for the 12.1 branch, more stable then the 12 branch.
Really?
I thought the whole point was Stables were signed off?
Nightlies also updated daily which is bewildering. I just want a stable Android 5.1 release really. I'm not especially interested in the "cutting edge".
Thanks

The thing is: a rom may work perfectly for me and for you it gives various problems.
Bugs vary from device to device.
For instance, most roms I have tried on my device have worked perfectly (Thankfully).
But I saw other people who reported various issues with the same rom.
You will have to try for yourself.
the GPE rom by Danvdh is one of the most stable roms I have tried. It's still 5.0.1 though.
Resurrection Remix with Alucard kernel also works fine for me.
You might also try FlexOS. People say it has nice battery life.
AICP was also stable for me.
SaberMod CM12.1 stable too. But haven't tried it for some time.
They are all based on CM12.1.
You might also try the official CM12.1 Optimized build.

I'd rather stick with a stable ROM that's been signed off and had some quality control applied to it for that very reason. I prefer to just install a ROM and be done with it (maybe upgrading every now and again OTA) .
Like you say otherwise you could be fine (probably) or maybe not.

Interesting idea. Is this much more optimised for the S4 than the regular CM12.1 nightlies?
Being a fork isn't there a chance it'll get out of sync with the CM12.1 nightlies?
Thanks for the info on the other ROMs.

The optimized builds are developed by the same developer as the nightlies for the s4. So they pretty much go head to head.
Oh nice thanks.
Do the latest CM12.1 nightlies have the ability to turn the S4 legacy Menu button into an App-Switcher button? It's irritating having to hold down the Home button to switch between apps.
Lastly, is there anything major left in CM11 not in CM12.1 now? Is there a list somewhere?
I understand missing features is one of the reasons a CM12.1 Snapshot hasn't been released.

+1 for the CM12.1 Optimized build. I had low mobile signal which resulting in big battery drain in the otherwise awesome Danvdh 5.0.1 GPE rom. Had to ditch it.

Thanks for this.
Why are the optimized builds so far behind? The latest CM12.1 optimized build for the S4 looks to be 2015-06-16 but there's a regular CM12.1 nightly dated 2015-06-25.

As of now, What is the best ROM for Mxpe?

Dirty Unicorn has been rock solid and I suggest staying away from CM based roms as they tend to have issues. Staying with AOSP based roms will give you better stability and Dirty offers a lot of options and features that limits your need for Xposed.
You can see the Dirty Unicorn XDA thread, but that is limited as it is just a dropping off point. you are better using their Google+ community.

Daam. So what are my other options lol.. Guess I have to go back to factory stock
I prefer CM 13 ROM above all other ROMs.
Try them all and decide for yourself. DU is by far more reliable and feature filled than cm. I ran cm for a few days but in the end pound for pound DU for me outperforms cm.

However there is any information about how well the hal3 enable mod works on that ROM...how manual can we get with the cameras nor if the ROM comes with some ported camera app
Two ROMs that I've had the best luck with are DU and Orion.
Orion has issues with the microphone. It seems to have low sensitivity so I have to talk really loud in call and even when using google speech to text I have to speak up. Others have had issues with MMS but it seemed fine to me.
DU seemed to have significant battery drain and random reboots on 10.6. Using 10.5 seems to solve both of these issues so for now DU 10.5 has been my daily driver.
Both are great ROMs and are both AOSP based. Resurrection Remix I've also used for a while but also had microphone issues which was a dealbreaker for me.
Best ROM for me. I'm on the February update.

Since I'm running Stock ( MPHS24.49-18-4 (May 1, 16) Security Patch) with Chainfire's SystemLess Root http://www.xda-developers.com/chainfire-releases-root-for-android-6-0-without-modifying-system/, I have absolutely NO PROBLEMS with anything ( a bit bumpy in the beginning but working great ). I have been running flawlessly since I got my MOTO X Pure (2015) from SWAPPA https://swappa.com/. I LOVE THIS PHONE!!! and now will be even better https://motorola-blog.blogspot.com/2016/10/n-is-for-nougat-android-70-is-coming-to.html?m=1, I just can't wait until June of 2017, or whenever MOTO/Lenovo pushes it out..
I have tried most of them (with TruePure being the best "custom" rom) and found that stock with root,xposed/gravitybox, and substratum is the best hands down. I mean honestly, with stock and gravitybox and using substratum in legacy RRO mode really does everything a custom rom does cleanly and bug free. I just recently fastboot flashed the current Sept factory image from Moto coming from TruPure, flashed TWRP, rooted, and set up exposed. The latest radio is already performing better than on TruPure, and the performance/battery is identical. I'd highly recommend this to anyone that's been running custom for a while. A nice factory image flash updates ALL of your partitions to the current build and I am truly seeing better signal performance (I am on verizon) from the "band 12 fix" radio that was really the only latest flashable radio for us.

I have tried various different custom ROMs such as DU, TruPure, Orion, AICP and found TruPure to be the most stable and Orion to be the fastest. However, TruPure started having very noticeable lag so I switched to Orion and the speed difference was night and day. However my one and only issue with Orion was that WIFI was incredibly slow. I constantly had to toggle wifi on off to get the speed back. I found this issue in DU and AICP also.
Now I am running the 6.0 Sabissimo V1 and Wifi is back to normal. Its sad becasue Orion was fantastic in its speed and customization! I really miss the little features such as adding date on status bar, % only battery sign, killall option when recents menu opened, and etc.
I just want stock rom stability with system customizations such as % only battery sign & the killall option when recents menu opened. I dont care for themes at all

If you're looking for a 7.1 ROM, try out dirty unicorns. They are not on XDA, but they have a Google+ page and a website with downloads for Clark. It is one of the most stable ROMS right know for this device. If you wanna stay on marshmallow I'm pretty sure Tru pure is still a great ROM, and you probably wouldn't wanna change.
I've gone back to stock with this device as every custom rom that I have tried has had some issue or another, making them unstable. The Brazilian stock nougat TWRP backup that is available on this forum is working surprisingly well on my device, an XT1572 being used in the UK.

None of the ROM'S do gestures as well as the stock gestures work, such as waving hand to wake the phone..etc..but they still work fairly well. Dirty unicorns also has the other moto gestures such as flip the phone to silence among others.
+1 for dirty unicorns. I'm running on their latest official release and its pretty good.
The latest build of stock 6.0.1 + Root + Xposed.
Stock... pure, untouched stock is the best for stability and speed, no doubt about it.
If you mean what CUSTOM rom is best, BrokenOS for MM or Dirty Unicorns for Nougat... Both are good, but neither one is as stable as stock.

OPwas looking for stability and speed, and DU and BrokenOS have been found to be most stable and smooth ROM's out there, if OP does not want stock. @Cowbell_Guy should mark this post as solved so far @acejavelin has hit the nail on the head for what the OP asked.

Ok, so far it's running great. I haven't gotten to really dig deep into it like I planned due to a busy day, but I did learn that YouTube still runs like trash. I honestly think it's the app, not the ROM, since it has been this way across several ROMs, and more than a couple devices. I found a little bit of screen flicker when plugged in and in landscape view. This cleared up immediately by disabling ambient display (which I don't think is even usable on the nooks anyway). Other than this, I have nothing to report, all is working as desired!

Ok, thanks for your feedback!
Did you know that the person that make marsh, lolli, n, etc for the nooks, is making aosp 8.0 for HD and HD+?
I found sources on his GitHub, https://github.com/airend/android/tree/tmp/oreo.

Ahh, good old amaces. He's been at it for a long time too! I bounce around ROMs from time to time depending on what I want to use my Ovation for. His ROMs are pretty solid and stable too, but I wanted to give old-school KK a try again. I've alwayse liked the split-screen menu layout it used over the newer versions too.

I used to have a working Hummingbird, but it's got a bad battery, and I haven't replaced it yet, so I'm not quite as versed on it as the Ovation anymore. I do know that he's got a following of people that test on the Hummingbird since he doesn't have one himself, and aside for trivial things like the boot screen's orientation being upside down, his' ROMs are known for being quite stable. I remember my Hummingbird feeling faster then my Ovation, but that's also due to the GPU not being taxed as hard as it is on that 1080p display. I remember I had MANY hours of use in on that Hummingbird with his ROMs at the hands of my kids. So much use the battery wore out. Never had any issues with it on the software side that I remember. Now you have me wondering if I can mod mine to fit an ovation-ish battery into it for longer life...

I haven't tried, or heard of before now, unlegacy on my ovation. So far, your ROM is a very well done re-release of CM11. As for the other, newer ROMs on Ovation, yes, they run quite well. I've only tried amaces' ROMs, and he put a lot of hours, and software tweaking magic into getting it to runt he way it does. I'm going to try this new stuff tonight I think. Just to see what it's about.
Update: I can't get Un-Legacy to boot, so I would say it's not as stable as hoped

Thanks.
Strange, I used it for the first time on hummingbird, and it boots.
Yea same, I only used CM and @amaces ROMs.
I can't wait to try Android Oreo on Nook HD, and if it ever comes out for the Galaxy Tab 2.

Sorry, did you flash the LineageOS 11 (4.4.4) ROM or the 7.1.2 one also mentioned in this post? My previous experience with anything newer than KitKat on this device was that performance was too slow. I'm back on CM 11 at the moment but would be tempted to flash a newer ROM.

I flashed the recommended 7.1.2 and seems to work great for my use. I use it mostly as a media player in my shop. for google music, tunein, iHeart, and HDHomeRun, but HD HOMErun stops streaming after 30 seconds, must be due to 512meg memory on the system. But Plex works with out an issue.
Its connected to a car radio in my shop and works great and responsive. I do leave it plugged in beacuse its always in the same spot.
Thanks again, if I start having any issue,' ill let you know.

I do have both a hummingbird and Ovation - both on the old 4.4.4 ROMs as anything newer had too much lag. Which ROM exactly are you trying to install and what recovery version are you on? I seem to remember that the 4.x ROMs needed the old recovery to install.

It gives me an error for all recoveries. Can you make a TWRP backup of hummingbird factory re-set LineageOS 11, and send me it? CM official givers errors and LineageOS 11.

I currently have Unlegacy Android 7.1.2 June 2020 build installed, but i'm planning to downgrade. Is omni roms a derivative of some other rom or is it independent? I don't like Lineage OS 13 and Slim 6 is a derivative of LOS. I have not tried omni 6 as of now.
I just got this tablet from a friend. I tried factory reset on the existing stock rom it had, I installed 4 different custom roms and I then went back to stock rom(4.2.2). This thing is so friggin laggy. Was there ever a time(rom) that this thing worked properly? I just want it for browsing, and it takes FOREVER to load a page(if it loads at all). As is, it is a useless piece of junk.
yeah I've just found it inside a closed. Flashed a few "newish roms" and it lags a lot even in the UI and random issues like Missing the top menu until I go into settings.
Will try to go back to 4.x and see if it lags there too. I remember it to be usable once booted.
It seems to heat a lot. Don't know if these things have a thermal paste.
edit cm11 2020 update works ok. but i need 5.0 up
try slim roms. i just flashed 6.0 and seems fine, 2020 security updates on andi's website

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. Out of those 4 custom roms you've tried, were any of them based off android 6? If all of them were android 7 based, then there's the problem. As of now, any custom rom based off android 7 are unstable. If you want stability, then go with Unlegacy Android 6, Lineage OS 13, Slim6 and Omni6(highly recommended).

Andi omni ROMs are quite good for performance and battery just don't install gapps. But I have not tried unlegacy yet but other than that I kind tried everything else

Slim 6 is like the worst for me
And the heating isn't exactly the rarest thing for this thing. If you want to sacrifice some of the apps you may use that require gapps then ditch google services entirely it improves performance and battery
Then for YouTube use vanced and for the app store use aurora

Download F Droid apk with another device such as a pc or another android. Send the apk to a micro sd card and put in your GT2.
If your GT2 have TWRP, use it to flash F Droid apk.
If successful, download Aurora Store via F Droid.
I always went with gapps, so these instructions are not 100% accurate, i hope i could help you out.
