Hello guys, I would like to know from you if its worth it to flash a customrom on my mia1. I've been using it since one year now , and i have keept it stock, just the camera2api for gc.
And over all i've been happy with it.
And have 0 experience with A/B partition phones ,my previews phone was nexus 6.
Is it easy to flash twrp and than a custom rom ?
Any suggestions would be apreciated :victory:

Thats what i've been thinking too , its not that i need any more features , im used to stock android.
In my opinion, nowadays smartphones already have many cool features and don't really require custom mods, like root or custom roms, however there are still a few but pretty strong reasons why you would like to flash a custom ROM:
- You'll always have the latest Android OS and security patches without having to wait like on stock ROM
- You'll have a wide range of customization possibilities so you can set your Mi A1 just on the style you want
- You'll also have the possibility of using custom Kernels which can give you better performance, specially in gaming or if you're more of a battery guy, they'll focus more into battery, depending on what you're looking for
- You'll be able to root your device which also opens many possibilities (mainly using root apps) but it's also pretty useful specially with that magisk modules thing which allow you to install things like the stock Mi A1 camera on custom ROMs, apps like Viper4Android (which is an equalizer with premium sound quality), etc.
Last but not least, keep in mind that the stock ROM already is very smooth and has a great battery life, so don't expect custom ROMs to be better than that, from my experience I can tell that custom ROMs are pretty close or equal, but I haven't found a ROM that gives better battery life than stock (maybe there are some or maybe it just needs some kernel tweaking, however I'm not really into kernel tweaking lol)
My advice: If you're looking for latest updates or customization, go ahead and flash a custom ROM, every other thing can be done on stock, keep in mind that the stock ROM can also be rooted or flashed with a custom kernel
I'm actually using NitrogenOS with Moun kernel and I couldn't be more satisfied, ROM feels stable, smooth and has a fairly decent amount of customization along with latest Android 9.0 and latest security patches without having to wait for them like on stock ROM.

Xiaomi seem to not be that good with speed & quality of updates. I haven't experienced many bugs myself but just the fact how slow updates are compared to custom ROMs and the fact that Magisk doesn't work properly on Stock made me just forget about it and flash a Custom ROM.
The question has to be asked.... What do you want you don't already have?
If a custom rom offers a feature you need then yes do it otherwise I have to ask why would you want to?

I ve been using custom rom since my firet android phone the s3 and still have it , i have 4 phones now i9300, i9505, nexus 6 all are on custom rom, and mia1, i ve been afraid to tweak mia1 becouse of a/b partition , but also havent felt the need yet, becouse till now xioami has released the updates in time (even though at the end of the month, on nexus 6 it was the same)

Mostly i would like on screen buttons , and the headphone volume got lower on oreo, in nougat it was great , this are the only reason i would like to try a custom rom

I guess rooting would be enough then. You can change both with magisk (or build prop settings afaik).
I liked LOS to try out something new but came back to stock. Now I am thinking of rooting again for bt volume.
Another great reason is camera2 for google camera. Way better than stock IMO
Better flash custom roms after xiaomi drops the updates. Like after a year Pie updates.

I've yet to set-up my new OP5, as i'm still undecided whether to stick with the stock 4.5.4 ROM, or try 1 of the custom ROMs that are currently available.

As off now I am on stock but will surely be going over custom ROM and custom kernel. Custom ROM and Kernel surely gives some extra benefits over stock(battery backup and many other features.)
So just test the phone for any HW defects or any for a week or so and you are good to root.
As far as I'm concerned, stock is a custom ROM. Not sure which option on the poll to pick...

By custom, i'm refering to custom ROMs that XDA users have shared on the forum.
Stock ROM = ROM that was supplied with the OP5
Custom ROM = ROM that has been shared on forums by developers. etc.
Most of what I needed custom ROMs for in the past can be accomplished with oxygen OS now so I probably wont be installing anything aside from OEM updates until they stop supporting this device, if I still have it at that time. And when I do, it's just to try out whatever the latest OS is so I'm familiar with the new features when I do upgrade.
I think the most I will do for now is root, and TWRP but I'm still up in the air about that.
I think Oxygen OS works really nice at the moment, i will stay stock for now.
Updates will come rapidly from Oneplus thus the custom ROMS are not worth it for me at the moment.
Once Lineage or RR Remix arrives i will switch to custom ROMS
I'm on FreedomOS and it's very faster then original OxygenOS... I like this for now better than the original one
I've had my OP5 since yesterday and it's been fantastic and I haven't felt a need to use a custom ROM at all. I also usually add a custom kernel to I can change sounds and increase vibration sensitivity (may still do a kernel). I'm getting just over 9 hours of SOT with everything stock. I mean hell I used Google Maps today for 1 hour straight and it only used 6% battery!? My Nexus would have lost at least 18-20%.
When it's all said and done, I'm sure I'll get the itch to ROM and kernel this phone, but this is truly the first phone I don't feel a need to right now. Of course I rooted the phone and applied TRWP the first 5 min I had the phone haha. That goes without saying for my root apps like TB, Accubattery and Nova Launcher.
Can anyone check if the jelly effect is still there after they flashed the custom roms?

I really like the stock ROM. Coming from Samsung and LG phones, the OP5 is already running the type of ROM I'd likely flash to those phones if I could. I did root it though, and I'll likely stay this way unless something really compelling comes up, or OP stops updating it.
Using stock for now. I personally see no point in switching to custom until AOSP/LOS based ROMs begin appearing. It's still going to be Oxygen OS with basically the same features if I'd switch now.
As of now i'm sticking with stock. The phone is still young and i expect software updates to happen more frequently. As soon as the ROM's have more time to be developed and mature and OnePlus slows down the updates I will probably switch. As of now all the ROM's and recovery's are still in development and I am choosing to wait till it smooths out a little.
I have tried AICP, Tipsy OS, Mokee, Lineage, Hydrogen os. I would say Stock is the best. My present setup.

May I ask, how is your idle drain on H2OS? What did you tweak to improve battery life?
I'm on H2OS too (so far unrooted), and idle drain is crazy... I even uninstalled Google Play Services (using Yalp Store to get Google Play Apps). Now Android System and Android OS kill my battery haha.

1. Will I be able to use apps that requires a non rooted phone? (I've installed a custom rom on my old phone, and it fails to pass safety net)
2. Will there be OTA updates? (I.e. security patches, bud fixes for that rom)
3. Will it be stable? (I've watched some videos and they say custom ROMs slows down the phone, and have random crashes)
4. Can custom ROMs enable project treble? (Not that it matters, just curious)
5. Are there any compromises with custom ROMs over stock rom? (Just any down sides of custom ROMs)
As a traveller, compatibility is very important, so will custom ROMs have any affect? I.e. booking flights, hotels, transfering stuff.
1) I tried Resurrection Remix, AOSPExtended and now I'm on ArrowOS, no problems with SafetyNet and I've been able to use my banking and payment apps
2) Depends on the ROM, but mostly yes, every ROM is regularly updated
3) I have never experienced a significant crash on a custom ROM, Even 9.0 ROMs are pretty stable as of now, ArrowOS feels much snappier than stock imho
4) Yup, some ROMs here have treble support. There's a guide by CosmicDan that explains how to enable Treble on our device

I have a modding addiction and always want to try something new but with this phone I have to resist.
I ask myself when do I actually want, for me, I flashed my Samsung to get a pure android experience without bloatware, then I have to remind myself, I bought this phone because it is AndroidOne and the little bloatware is easily disabled, I'm actually very happy with the experience.
Next I have to ask myself, what will I gain from modding, and the truth is the only thing I really want is Gcam and honestly I don't really need it.
Sometimes it's hard to resist but I just keep reminding myself I already have all I want, for me I will stay 100% stock until after P when the device becomes unsupported.

I have the exact same "addiction" and i came to the same conclusion: I've bought this phone because its "pure" android so i wont mess with it! Flash a custom of 9.0 just to tell my friends that i got it first? Stock will always be stock, and until the device become unsupported i will stick to it. Then, flashing custom roms will be a addiction again :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Sorry to be kinda off-topic on this but I'd like to ask a question regarding custom ROMs (Treble or not) regarding the Mi A1.
I've tried some of them, and usually what makes me get back to stock is the unlocking delay. There's always a delay when pressing the button and the screen turning on.
Have tried LOS15.1, 2-3 Treble ROMs (I think it's normal that it's like that on every one of the Treble ones if it's a vendor issue) and I think one of the Pie ones.
Am I doing something wrong or is this how it is supposed to be? Is there any Pie ROM that doesn't have that issue?
If there isn't, I don't think it's worth flashing a custom ROM. Untouched Stock with Gcam is pretty neat.

Yeah, I've tried liquid remix 10.0.1, and I must say, sticking to stock is the best. Don't get me wrong, I really like custom roms, but after installing it, I realised that it's not even worth it. Plus, I don't really like to much customisation. You could say I'm more of an apple sheep. I'll probably switch to custom roms once this phone gets outdated. All the custom mods I need is root. For me, the best solution is to stock to the stock rom with root access.

I face the same questions as WhatzIt2Ya, the brand new A1 is in front of me, currently empty and up to date with latest October update, and I ask myself what to do.
The phone will be my daily driver, so the encryption is mandatory. That's why I'm sad to see LineageOS Pie has some problems with it as of today. I run LineageOS on my parents' Nexus 5 and it rocks.
We have basically five possibilities:
1. Don't touch anything, keep the original ROM, the locked bootloader, OTA and so on. As long as the security patches arrive, why not. However, no TWRP and no root = no nandroid backups and no Titanium Backup, i.e. I'll lose lots of time in one year to backup the phone and configure it again when I'll take the custom ROM route, and I of course will to keep the phone updated.
2. Just unlock the bootloader. The phone will wipe itself, but that's not a problem, it's empty anyway. TWRP can be installed later to perform the nandroid backup.
3. Install TWRP and keep the stock ROM with root eventually. A fellow developer has figured out how to convert OTA to images installable with TWRP, so basically it's one OTA per month vs one TWRP install per month.
4. Install some custom ROM. Which one?
5. Treblize the phone. That's the future, but are the ROMs ready?
In 2018 Android is still behind Apple regarding backups. I have a work provided iPhone and all I need to do before getting mad is a simple iTunes backup. The phone can be restored in exactly the same state later, without my intervention. On Android I need to figure out how to backup things one by one (icons in folders, call history, SMS, all chats, etc., etc...) and to configure the new phone again.
And with root one loses the possibility to use some banking apps, so we add yet another trick to hide we are rooted. It's fun and rewarding, but takes too much time.

Generally well regarded roms like Lineageos which are developed by 'good' developers will be more stable. Some volunteers who develop lineageos builds have a better track record than others. "Official" lineageos requires volunteers to pledge to follow a set of rules which include things like timely updates on major security patches, release updates for x number of months etc. Lineage is generally quite stable because volunteers are working off from a good platform. If you are extra worried about security, you might want to stick with stock because who really has the time to keep reading through the commits even if the code is open sourced?
Lineage has a built in root which will not pass safetynet so don't use it if you want to pass. Or use Magisk to root instead. But Magisk will need regular updates to pass safetynet and its a continuing cat and mouse game where google will fix safetynet and magisk will fail safetynet until the next update.....
Edit- I forgot to add that just unlocking the bootloader will cause safetynet to fail so every Lineageos phone would fail safetynet even if root was not enabled.
If you have to ask about treble, don't do it. Noobs have bricked their phones and there are threads that they have started crying for help.
Custom roms are all developed by volunteers and the level of testing is dodgy - who has time for that when they are working on it in their spare time? Occasionally there might be mistakes and phones will get bricked or lose wifi/BT functionality like one early version of a custom rom which wrote to parts of the firmware which should have been normally left untouched.

It worth it, at least you get the notifications work correctly and shows at the top of the status bar unlike the stock rom..
My advice to you is to istall lineage only, it's the most stable rom so far.
It depends on your priorities, if you want more choice, more control on what apps are pre installed, no bloatware, and more customization options, then that's what custom roms are for. But mind that it comes with lower security, at least as long as the manufacturer updates the device. Because custom roms usually run with looser security settings and features.

Not worth it yet. Wait till official lineage and official trwp are released. More risky to use custom roms whose source codes are not released.

as i've seen and read in the forums, the unoffical lineage rom seems to be very stable already. Which problem do you see in flashing this version now?
My bootloader is unlocked in 3 hours and i want to get rid of this EMUI crap and bloatware

You don't get updates on unofficial versions and it's not as well maintained/supported as name implies. I rather keep bootloader locked and secured, and get almost monthly updates from xiaomi. Until official TWRP and LOS are released, as stated earlier. No need to rush and deal with instability or unexpected problems. I debloat unnecessary apps using SAKI program on stock room without root. I honestly think this is the best path to go for now.
I won't install any custom roms before official TWRP support and official LineageOS ROM support comes. I'd not also unlock my phone's bootloader untill those two thing comes.

I switched to Pixel Exirience rom from the global 10.3.5 and touch latency on the edges still the same.
I don't know what custom rom users priorities are, mine definitely having a smooth and proper working device. Most roms I tested in the past simple but most used features, like the camera, were always a headache. It might make sense for a techie or geek, but for daily use I'd rather debloat MIUI for mind peace...

The Evira Kernel is built into the PE, so i just updated it to the last 1.9 version and did not feel any difference.

If you just want to get rid off the bloatware, just use adb commands. No unlocking and rooting needed
If you got the 3GB/32GB variant. then lineage OS or pixel experience should save you some extra GBs of storage and free you some extra ram (MiUI 10.3.5 uses 1.6GB or something IDLE and leaves you with 20GB storage with stock apps)
It is to early. You have latest version of Android OS on your phone, and Xaomi still give us updates with some new features.
Custom Roms are still developing and have some bugs,so .. I will no rush with installing custom rom yet. Thats my opinion.
When Xaomi stop supporting us and giving us updates,after one year that is sure that will happen,than will custom ROMs will be fully developed..and can install it..
I would like to have custom rom ,and Elvira kernel, I like tweaks and mods from Magisk. But also I want to see MIUI 11 and next Xaomi updates for RN7.
As soon as I could, I unlocked my bootloader and installed AOSP (GSI).
I don't really like MIUI, it has a lot of nice features but actually I don't use most of them.
For me, it's worth.
I am considering to root my phone and flash custom ROM which has gaming mode, good camera app? Any inputs about these two basic requirements.. about which ROM should I flash.. I went through XDA but could find many of the roms which are updated regularly.. so bit confused about where to start from because i usually have no time to jump from one rom to another..I would like the ROM which is stable for daily use..

I assume when you say Gaming Mode you mean the one similar to OxygenOS? Then I'm sorry but no ROM has that. Some have a Gaming Mode (Havoc , Syberia) but that's not OnePlus's Gaming Mode. It's a fairly simple one that just blocks Heads Up Notification. Same goes for Navigation Gestures.
Now the second point regarding Camera. Many ROMs have Stock OOS Camera built in. Others have Gcam and some have LineageOS / Snap Camera. You can install OnePlus Camera on all ROMs as well as Gcam. However their are issues such as broken 4K/60 FPS Recording, in some cases Broken Portrait Mode, etc. As far as Camera goes your best bet is to use Gcam. Or OOS Camera if you can live with a Few Bugs.
Now when it comes to recommendation, try any one you want. All of them are similar to each other in essence. Some have some more Customization than others. All are stable. If you want a good one, try OmniROM TreskMod. It's not available on XDA. Google it. The reason why I say this is :
It has Gapps Built-in. Makes flashing waaay easier. Also has Delta OTA Support so you don't have to download full ZIP Each time. Has Pixel look and feel and has some Customization. Good Luck.

It's the first time since I own Android phones that I don't flash a custom ROM.... If it's just to recreate the same features than oos why bothering flashing?
And most of all 'features' present in custom roms are unneeded and unused by 80% of people.
Apart from that most of remaining active roms seem good to use... It's up to you to try.

I would suggest you keep your stock ROM and flash a magisk rom on top of it, like xXX No Limits or RenovateICE. They work as mods, introducing some extra features.
I've explored ROMs and haven't found enough of a reason to keep one. I'm running rooted OOS. I've used Havoc, aosip, pixel experience, and in the end, they have bugs that are actively being worked out through weekly releases and I find myself having to restore back to OOS. I use Gcam on OOS after flashing the framework with Magisk. There's plenty you can do with the OOS and with Android Q coming, there will be a whole other bug repair sequence going on again, including adapting the custom roms to mimic or outdo the newest OOS with Q.
I root/mod (or flash an alternate firmware) on all my old phones and pads, but I don't normally do this to my phone (daily driver), and have always chosen phones with fairly basic android as standard (Like Motorola).
The Xiaomi 9t that I have now is the first MIUI based phone that I've had. It's great but MIUI is just OK... I use NOVA launcher and I disabled all the apps that I don't use via ADB.
It's worked well and the phone is still fast and is frankly the best phone I've had (obviously any newer phone is better than the last generation).
But after successive updates the disabled apps have slowly creeped back in and I just can't be bothered to ADB back and work out which apps to disable again (I remember disabling certain ones causes bootloops).
I just want to backup the phone, unlock the bootloader and flash a new (debloated) ROM.
I don't care what ROM it is, so long as it fulfills my needs... I have looked through the various ROMS available over the last few days and am just not sure which one is best suited...
If I had to make a choice of the various ROMS I would probably choose Lineage, however I think it needs Magisk and various modules to pass the safety checks.
In case I have missed a ROM or not fully read through all the various ROM threads properly... I'm asking for a recommendation... .
What I need is (in order of preference).
Stability - I want maximum stability with all features working.
Updated - Something with frequent security updates.
UnRooted (to pass SafetyNet) - I don't need Magisk and want use apps that require security).
Battery Life.
Debloated - I don't need mods or tweaks or extra apps over stock Android, unless they increase performance/stability.
Stock Android ( I guess I don't mind MIUI if it is fully debloated).
I really don't care about themes, UI mods/tweaks, sound enhancements, quick launchers, or any app other than the stock ones.
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Lineage and i m so happy. With Miui i had some errors but With this room 0 problems. With Miui i had 5 hours of battery and With lineage 8.
U have staibility, a rom update and a very good experience.
