What essential did i just buy?!?! - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I ordered an essential phone on eBay, which came in today. It functions. However it's stuck on 7.1.1. I contacted Essential and they told me what I have is a Sprint demo model. I run a few errands hardware tests and it seems it does have the sd835 (it says msm8998?) and correct ram and memory, supposedly. It said something like only 407dpi and a slightly lower resolution display. I contacted the seller and he told me that Essential says this to like 20 of his customers and that I can manually download and install the update. I'm hesitant to try that in case of hardware discrepancies. The bootloader says "Mata" for codename etc. Any thoughts on this???

I have the chance to return it. Is it worth it to return it and get another one? I want the correct specs as a normal ph1.

Mata is the codename for this phone. If you goto about phone and it is hardware revision 1.8 then you have the same hardware as the rest of us and should just download one of the "back to stock" fastboot packages on this forum and call it a day.

Thank you for the info I do have 1.8. What is the significants of that? Will I get OTA's now that I manually was able to update to 9.0?

I fastboot installed 9.0. rebooted and had no touch screen. So I installed through adb sideline the same version and it seems to be working now.

If Sprint is anything like Telus (my carrier) you will get ota updates but it could be days or weeks after essential releases them. I do all my updates manually.

I don't know if it's Sprint or not but it was stuck at 7.1.1 and I had to do it all manually. I have MetroPCS.

What is the variant in the bootloader? It must be unlocked, so in that case, you should get OTA updates as they are released.

It does say unlocked but it would not receive OTAs, I spent a good couple hours trying and troubleshooting. I contacted Essential and that's when they told me it's probably a Sprint demo. I just unlocked the bootloader and updated everything manually then relocked the bootloader.

You could flash last months 9.0 release, use it like that for a bit and see what happens. Would be the fastest way to determine whether it will update now or not. Also you should leave the bootloader unlocked, from what I've seen on this forum relocking the bootloader has been the cause of 99% of bricking for this phone.

Thanks for the info. I may try the recent prior update thing, if not I guess I can always manually flash.

Anyone else end up with a "demo" model (according to Essential)? What's your experience with it?

I don't have one, but they are in the wild.
You get no support and they will not take it for out of warranty repair.

They said I could still update manually, which is ok. With my luck I'd get no warranty support anyway lol.

Bumping this because I booted into my bootloader and it says "Variant - ". It's blank.

Personally as soon as Essential told you it's likely to be a Demo model I would have returned it to the seller immediately. That's just a recipe for disaster/headaches.

I can, but it's only $209 I don't think I'll find a better deal for that price. Everything still functions the same just no warranty support, and no ota's. I can update manually still.

the wifi model isn't out yet... how do you have it!
I went to Best buy today and asked for a unlocked xoom for wy Fy use only and they sold it to me. I didnt sign up for any service at all. They took it off the shelf and took my cash.
Apparantly the official files to unroot and lock again are posted to the motodev site but noone on the moto forums will tell me where. I am not seeing them anywhere.

Matt, the Moto forum mod, is working to fix the link for the official software. As soon as the files are accessible I will post them in a new post.
Motorola official relock Files are posted here
http://bit.ly/dX9few
How do you know this is the update? There is no date/info on the page.
This is not the update these are the files for those that are rooted to get back to Official software so they can fastboot oem lock
And by doing this, the device will go back to stock/out of the box status?
Do you know if this will wipe the 32gb partition (sdcard)?
Yes it does wipe the device. It is back to stock status but you will not have to reactivate the device. If Moto or VZ can tell its been unlocked I dont know.

Wifi causing crashes?

So, I just got myself a brand new Nexus 6P today, and I'm in love. However, after unlocking the bootloader, connecting to my Wifi network (haven't gotten to test others yet) seems to cause my device to slow down and lock up. This happens on both the stock rom and on cyanogenmod. Has anybody else experienced this, or know how to fix it without RMAing my phone?

I never faced any such problem, ever. Which Android version and build number are you currently running on your 6P?
Also did you try re-locking and then checking if it works fine?

I'm on Android 6.0.1 and my build number is rather large because I'm on cyanogenmod right now, you can see a screenshot of my about page if you go to imgur slash 1b8VtH7 and yes, it did persist when I re-locked it
EDIT: If you want, I can make a video of the behavior so you can see it for yourself.

I could see in the screenshot that your radio version is latest, so my doubts are clear, and everything is fine there. To rule out the software aspect completely, you could give a try to a factory reset by flashing the factory image.
If that doesn't work, I would advise you to re-lock bootloader, and take your phone to the service centre.
Yeah, I was gonna give re-flashing stock a try in the morning. As far as bringing it to a service center, I've got no idea what to do, since I bought the phone through Amazon. Hopefully there should be some sort of RMA procedure available through them

Good luck. :good:
Even I brought my Nexus 6P through Amazon India. I had an issue with a misplaced volume key, so what I did was, I restored stock, relocked and took the phone to the nearest Huawei service centre. Took the phone, box, and all accessories, and also a copy of invoice from Amazon itself.

Maybe an updated version of software by Google will fix the BLOD

Hello guys.
I live in South Korea and just had contact with customer service.
They said once my warranty is now passed, they might not be able to provide me a free repair, but google will soon release an update that is supposed to fix the BLOD(Boot Loop Of Death), so I'd better wait for it.
I don't know if it will work, but for me, and people having a phone which can't even get to recovery but only bootloader, who seem to have nothing to lose, this update will worth the wait.
Let's hope that's true and we can get our 6P back to life.
Didnt Google mentioned BLOD is a hardware issue earlier?

Yeah. There's a news that Google said it's hardware problem, but Huawei did say the upcoming update will fix it.
IDK which one is truth.. just hoping simply updating software will fix it.

Oh it didn't occured to me..
I also have some doubt that it's a software-related problem, because downgrading to MM doesn't even work.
Well, maybe they are fixing bugs that they haven't found before, or also maybe, the defective OS has triggered something..
I'm not sure that update will fix my phone, but for now, this is my last hope.

Good luck but I honestly wouldn't get my hopes up too high. But you aren't the first person Huawei told this to. Hopefully there is something to it besides them trying to brush people off. I personally think people should file a class action suit against Huawai since the phone appears to be defective and it should last for more than a year given its premium price. I've never had a phone from HTC, LG or Samsung break, no matter how long I kept using them. I've never even heard of another phone that has all the issues the 6P does.

Yeah I'm suspecting if there's an inherent hardware defects, and if that's the case, I think they should provide us a proper support like LG providing refund of Nexus 5x in US.
But, I'm not an expert and don't know what caused boot loop.
As I saw another person who may live in another country of mine, heard from Huawei that update will fix the problem, there may be something google is preparing for.
For now, there best thing I can do, is wait android 7.1.2 beta image.
If it won't work, that's a problem of then.
p.s. luckily I have unlocked bootloader, but considering boot looping devices can update their software only through unlocked bootloader, what should normal people having locked bootloader should do?

Maybe you're right.
I'm not sure if the update will fix my phone, and whether they meant 7.1.2 beta or officially update.
I also have a bad feeling that my phone won't back, but if this phone doesn't return, I have no choice but keep using my old-fashioned Nexus 5.
If the beta update doesn't fix it, maybe I'll just give up or give it a second chance for official update.. but for now, I can see some hope because Huawei said it to me.
There's some news about what I tried, but there ain't good things.
First, I downloaded N4F26O update(https://developers.google.com/android/images), which was uploaded in 2 days ago(Yeah, I only thought about 7.1.2 beta, abd didn't think about this) and installed it.
It didn't work.
So I contacted with Huawei and Google's consumer care center.
Huawei said, to talk about softwares, I should contact with Google.
Google said, they didn't receive any plan of the update which is supposed to fix boot loop. I got confused, since a days ago, Huawei once did say there will be that update.
They also said, if I have a secondary phone, I'd better use that phone and see if the update will be released and fix my phone.
So... I didn't gain anything. Google and Huawei both said they can't assure the update will fix the bootloop, and the only clear solution is to change its motherboard.
Well, I won't give up, at least unti thel 7.1.2 beta's release, but I'm tired and for now, have nothing to do.
I'll just wait for the 7.1.2 beta.
I'll just keep waiting...
If you feel compelled to support, and bring attention to this issue.

But that's seems to be for devices that's stuck in EDL mode.
I still can access bootloader, so thank you for your advice, but that seems to not work.
I'm afraid that you'll have to let this go.. Huawei is know for telling customers BS on the phone. Even the warranty repair center sucks. They downgrade people their phones and say that the battery issue is now resolved. It really is a shame, but they don't give a rat's *ss about you or any other customer who has already paid for the product.

I definitely won't be the guinea pig lol. Just preordered my full price g5 plus 64gb today. Should be delivered on release day. My moto x 1st gen somehow had the pins bent on the usb port. Stuck using my work phone (iPhone 6s) as my main phone. Can't stand iPhones!
idk if i care bout bootloader or not, i have moto g 1st gen which sadly fell down -many times- but last time the LCD screen film got broken from inside -not the screen itself- , too bad i wanted to try new cooked OS on it but it's unusable now
so now i've to order new phone and based on moto policy of getting kinda cheap phone + 99% vanilla android+future upgrades ,then it's what i want except i'm appealing for amazon price than original overpriced one
Just received my G5+ Amazon version and the bootloader unlock is a no go from the Moto site. Assumed as much after the G4.
Assumed so, got my g5+ in today and unlocked and rooted already. Saving the money on the amazon version would have been nice but I wanted to unlock it.

I sure did. There's a youtube video link on that page if you want visual instructions. It's super easy, just make sure whenever you restart recovery/power off in recovery you choose "Do Not Install" every time otherwise you'll brick the phone and you'll have to reflash the stock rom.
Argh, this is unfortunate. I stumbled upon a G4 thread that was saying how to remove it. I was surprised how easy it was so I decided to go purchase a G5 Plus.
Little did I know later in the thread it was discovered an error in Motorola's unlock system that was giving out codes.
The only thing I really look for is the rooting so I can backup apps and what not... really don't mind the ads. Is there any hope for a work around to unlock the bootloader?
