Poor ram management - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Guides, News, & Discussion

Why mi a2 only has only 700 mb ram free out of 4 gb
Having serious issues as it affects multitasking on the device
Only minimizing pubg kills the app
Why ram management is so aggressive nd no free available ram for most of the time

Bad RAM Management would be if there is a lot of unused ram. Why are people believing more free ram is better. It's worse actually as RAM is there to be used. Are you experiencing apps closing unexpectedly?

[Q] how much RAM left after froyo install??

very important for me.i will buy wildfire but when i read that android usues 210 ram and left only 160 ram(is low for web pages)..i sold my ipod touch 4.gen because of this(low ram only 130 usable.) owners please say the exact ram amount left. thanks.
i have from 100MB to 220MB it depends;p if you want to have clean memory just delete some widgets and kill all aps by any task killer.
thanks for quick reply.if when i bought a wildfire and look ram amount how much i will see.?220 ram?? if yes enough for me thanks.

sorry but what you going to do with 220mb ram? You gonna eat it or what? Or do you think it is good because you will have a fast phone? (more free ram = faster? not!)

Using full ram with root

I've read that 1 of the 2gb of RAM is used for the touchwiz so you effectively only have 1gb. If you install a custom rom, ie. cyanogenmod, do you get to use the full 2gb then?

Pretty sure its ICS that takes up the space and its not a full GB. I don't have the phone but a friend has around 1.6 - 1.7 Gigs free at max.
I don't think that would work out, considering the international GS3 has 1GB of RAM and runs TouchWiz.
So much confusion, let's spell this out. First of all our phones have 2gb ram, period. The GPU requires about 0.38gb of the system's 2gb because it doesn't have its own onboard memory. So no matter what software you run, you'll be starting out around 1.62 available.
Different operating systems, frameworks, skins, and applications will have different memory footprints. Touchwiz is probably a bit heavier than AOSP (CM/AOKP), so after a clean boot you'll probably have more free ram running an AOSP variant.
Honestly its all kind of moot at this point however, because I doubt in either situation most people get anywhere near using the all remaining RAM with current ROM offerings. Key lime pie may be another story.
Yeah to his point about not using the RAM is just stupid, unused ram is wasted ram meaning you have it for nothing, for example on stock cm9 you got 1.2 gb free most of the time, 500-600mb free, touchwiz manage ram better but still leaves a lot behind, look up what ram does and you will understand why unused ram is useless

Isn't it ideal to have unused RAM so that when you open apps and multitask, you the memory to keep them alive? Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but if we never had unused Ram then we would never be able to multitask, right?

To a certain extent, I for one think there's no reason to try and utilize all of it for nothing. And it's pointless to complain about having extra

This is quote from something I read in pc mag
" This has to do with extremes. Remember that every so many cycles (don't remember on current ram), your memory has to completely refresh its contents. If you have an extra 16GB that you never use, then you waste time refreshing all of that ram. Also on this note, higher densities, and larger quantities are harder on your controller. For maximum speed and stability, use ram appropriate for your usage pattern"

While that is true, ram come in discrete chunks and 2 gb is noticeably better than 1. At a certain threshold the memory manager kills off old apps to free up ram. More ram means more recently used apps remain loaded and available sooner plus i have no issues with many pages open in a browser. I typically run with around 600 mb free. Only my dell streak i would often be under 100 and unless i manually closed apps it really bogged down.

1gb of ram is not for TW and the rest for apps....its 2gb total...in reality like 15mb total

[Q] How can free more memory g pad 500v

Hello ,i have g pad v500 ..I want ask about ram. Factory give this tablet 2mb ram. When i go settings i see free memory about 950mb ram..How can free some memory? Sorry for my english is not good..
thanks
I don't understand your question.
Using ram is good, because it's used, and free ram is doing nothing.
If you go to the task manager settings you can set "auto clear Ram" to every hour.
Manually closing apps clears ram too.
But the whole point of having 2 Gb of ram is hat you can have more apps running at the same time.

I think he's wondering why despite having 2gb of RAM, even if you have just turned on your tablet you find just 950 mb of free ram instead of 1,5 / 2 Gb.
I'm surprised too seeing a huge ram necessity just for the os..

This is caused mainly by the useless bloatware that manufacturers have preinstalled. Use an app like titanium backup or greenify to freeze/hibernate the apps that you dont need or install a custom rom which comes debloated to free up your device's ram.

My samsung galaxy tab 2 had almost full ram when i bought it because of the ridiculous touchwiz and so many useless programs that i never had intended to use. As a result when i was trying to play a game the tablet was lagging as hell. I searched a bit and found about rooting and installing custom roms, i installed then cyanogen mod and i had like 250mb occupied out of 900mb. Needless to say that the tablet was like 100 times faster than its stock firmware. So the moto unused ram is wasted ram isnt quite true because you might need that extra memory (for example if you play heavy games like modern combat 4 or gta). If you dont have enough free memory the system will try to disable other applications and android isnt known for its task management capabilities in contrary to ios which is supposed to handle applications and memory better(i dont have a personal experience about this though as i dont own an apple device). Lg g pad has a lot of memory and i ve never reached its memory to its full limit even on stock fw.

Disable other application. You'll want to slip a microSD card into a slot on the side that's covered by a little door. The G Pad supports cards up to 64GB.

TouchWiz eats too much RAM requiring each apps to reload. Check out the Free RAM available on the S6 threads and you'll see that it barely has free RAM.
according to this, i should have gotten a iphone 6 (something that falls in between). Guess I'll have to chunk this M9 DevEd in the garbage and learn to like IOS ?

Free ram is wasted ram. I highly doubt touchwiz is using so much memory it's causing other apps to be killed. It's more likely that Samsung got a little happy with killing apps in the background trying to save battery.
Probably will be fixed in a update...
Hoping HTC is able to optimize for the s810 as well, as it seems very poorly optimized atm

Well, if the RAM is taken over by just the UI and System, it's a wasted RAM. How come M9 usually has over 1 GB of Free RAM yet it can load all of the apps that are cached in RAM while S6 has about 200 MB Free yet it reloads apps EVEN IF those are supposed to be CACHED. I suspect a memory bloat where there's little RAM available for APPS to cache properly.
all that this video show is the following:
- persistent software issues on the Samsungs like hangs and needless killing apps out of RAM
- the s810 / DDR4 / 3GB combo on the M9 quality software really shines when it comes to multitasking
- Apple's high IPC from just two cores should be a big a lesson to anyone building Android SoCs

How much is the total ram in your Nexus 6P?

I just noticed that on my 6P the total ram the os reporting is 2.6Gb. Is that normal? I can't remember but I am pretty sure on my nexus 6 was more. Anyone else noticed this?

No, but is very small amount over... In the picture you see 700mb free.. Isnt that low?
It's like the base 640k from old days, or even better, that space between 640k and 1meg that was mostly reserved and a pain to use.
yeah my operating ram is low as well its always around 700 mb o soI dont see if why if they knew they were gonna use so much why not make it 4GB instead of 3?
Total: 2.6GB
Average used: 66%
Free 0.88GB
Thanks, I was wondering if it's just mine...

I'm curious why phone, while not running much, reports RAM usage over 50%.
Is this normal or do I need to troubleshoot?

The free ram thread for every phone. Android is based on Linux. Linux runs best when it uses as much ram as possible and frees ram as it sees fit.

No problem. We all get used to Windows which works better with free ram.

But in the G4 you have more Ram to use. Just like about 1GB. And here on the 6P less then 1GB
The stock Google bloat system & apps will use more memory. It always seems to improve free memory with custom roms and their optimization tweak's!

You are missing the point. You do not want free ram. In Linux based operating systems free memory is wasted memory. It optimizes the ram for the apps you use most frequently and helps them to load faster. The 6P has 3gb of ram.
Thank you sane people. I was getting tired of telling people this fact about Linux ram management.

I know my nexus is sitting around 60% usage from just the OS / UI but my MotoX 2013 only used maybe 20-30%.
My moto also claimed 2GB RAM and it showed all 2GB, same with my Shield tablet, on any app that shows total RAM yet the nexus only shows 2.64GB.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
