Privacy respectful ROM : /e/ (also named eelo) - Xiaomi Mi 5s Guides, News, & Discussion

N.B : I'm not at all the creator/dev or related member of the /e/ foundation. I'm just here to share the project to discuss about it and I'm not responsible and can't help you if you encounter a problem by installing this ROM.
Hi Mi5S users
I've recently seen that a ROM named /e/ have been released in Bêta for our Capricorn device. The foundation (made by a french open-source dev) behind /e/ claims the ROM respects users's privacy and seems to let you use all of the Google Play Store apps without Google Services.
Because they speak about their project better than me, here is the link of their website : https://e.foundation/ (or if you prefer, search eelo on Qwant (or Google) and you may found it). :highfive:
Honestly, I didn't tried it actually but they push an update everyday. You can found download links on their website.
So, what do you think about this ROM ? Did you try it ?
Have a good day ! :victory:

Woah! It's a great a lot! Never saw a ROM like this... I think I'll try it out tomorrow!

Hey there! I'm trying this rom right now.
At the first look is a LOS 15.1 based ROM with some others features for google services. In settings I founded a MicroG voice that can change some security stuff for big G apps and frameworks. I don't even try to flash Gapps, cuz I don't know if OpenGapps are ok for that ROM or not.
The Launcher is a customized one, with "miui/iOS" icons and no drawler: like on MIUI 10 we have a "main desktop" with all the apps and swiping on the right we have the search bar, wheather and other stuff.
As you can see, there are few apps installed (I never see before Telegam that comes out with the others system apps). Btw there is also a Torch app, and that is really stupid because I can already turn on the flashlight like others roms by pulling down the notification bar and press the torch.
But this isn't a big deal, because the rom seems work well without problems.
After that, we have other common apps like OpenCamera, Music, Contacts, File, Mail, Web... But when I try to open SMS, it ask for my phone number: that's because it uses Signal, a strange app never saw before that "semplify to comunicate with the contacts" (no idea what it is, really).
it's a beta rom, and maybe in future it will get some really intresting features...
But for now, with 6/10/18 build I can only see a face lifted LOS 15.1 with the "microG" menu on settings. Nothing else.

Thank you for your interesting and complete reply ! Signal is a famous messenger app that encrypt messages if the contact has Signal too. Of course, this ROM needs some improvements but I'm impatient to see the version 1.0. Nevertheless, the version of LineageOS seems to be 14.1 and not 15.1. Hope they will update it.

It seems nobody understand so well, or they didn't read up on the /e/ (eelo) OS. On this ROM, GApps (GoogleApps), will never work. It is the whole idea behind eelo. It is to GET AWAY FROM GOOGLE TOTALLY. NO Google Play Store, NO Google Play Services, NO Google Maps, NOTHING Google related at all. This OS provides ALTERNATIVE (replacement) Apps and Services that gives the same or similar functionality and or results. To simplify... It is like a car. You want a Mercedes or you want a BMW? Mercedes parts don't fit or work on a BMW and vice-versa, BUT, both cars' parts, eg water pump, has the same function and produce the same results. So! SMS is a 'water pump' (Merc) and SIGNAL is a 'water pump' (BMW), both doing the same thing.
A little silly comparison, but i think it gets the idea across. So, in essence... Whenever you guys use any /e/ (or eelo) ROM... FORGET ABOUT ANYTHING GOOGLE RELATED.!!!
Thank you.

MoDaCo - Automatic Application Update Check (AppToDate?)

Paul over at MoDaCo is starting to get some interest in a new application he's developing - basically it involves developers providing some XML with their installer that ties in with some similar XML on the applications' download page on their web server.
When a new version is released, the XML on the download page is updated, "AppToDate" will check the download server and you'll be able to see that a new version is available.......
AstraWare, Developer One and SK-Tools have already expressed an interest in making their software work with "AppToDate".......what are you waiting for!?!?!
I'll stop babbling, this is what Paul posted over at MoDaCo "AppToDate"
I have a dream! OK, so it's not quite as ground breaking as some other dreams of our time, but it's a dream none the less. It goes something like this...
I have a whole bunch of software on my device. Probably 15 apps at least. I also write software, which is downloaded by a fair few people, both commercial and free. I like to ensure that my software on my device is up to date with the latest versions, and it's a right pain in the ****. Not only that, I'd like my end users to have the latest versions installed to get the best possible experience... and to facilitate that I have to write a custom update checker into each of my applications. Fine for big apps, not great for quickly rustled up apps or tweaks.
But there could be another way.

What if you could have an application that lived on the device, that wasn't tied to any one application or vendor, that could check for updates for everything installed on your device? IMHO, that would be awesome. A dream. For such an approach to work, you'd need a few things...
Someone to write the update application, and to develop it. A community project perhaps?
The update application MUST be FREE for end users and developers
The update application MUST be easy for developers to plug in to
The application needs to be used by end users!
Freeware developers need to use the application!
Commercial developers need to use the application!
Now here comes the audience participation part - if you are a user, would you like to see such an application? If you are a developer - either freeware or commercial - would you like - and would you use - such an application? Make your voice heard here, and if there's an appetite for this, let's make it happen! I'll be updating this topic to list developers who would like to be involved.
Oh, I forgot to mention... I've basically written the update application! It's simple, has plenty of scope for future development, can update itself (of course) and in order to be used by a 3rd party, just needs an XML file dropped into the updater directory from your install CAB, and a current version XML on your server!
Beautiful! The response to this topic will determine how much time I spend on getting it production ready

Lend your support to this - with all the updates for various applications flying around, it's an almost impossible task to know if you're running the latest and greatest version - hopefully it will grow into a REALLY useful tool.
Thanks for listening

[app] [Aug 26] Google Maps Mobile v3.2.1

How's it hanging xda? So every now and then I check to see if a new version of GMM is available so I can try to post it here first for those of you who gotta have the highest version number or cook it in roms. Not much of a hacking development, just posting for your convenience; so here's a fresh one, version 3.2.1.
Here's a vague changelog of 3.2.* but I think the only noticeable difference between this and 3.2.0 is a better layering manager. And of course the version number, they improved that a notch.

Yeah, if you're referring to Latitude.
Another thing it does that I don't remember 3.2.0 doing (but I could be wrong, maybe it had this) is give traffic for major avenues and cross streets in my city at least. Before it just gave the FDR, the West Side Highway and the bridges and tunnels whereas now you can see what's doing on Broadway, Park Avenue, 57th Street, Malcolm X Boulevard -- not all but most major arteries (I'm in NYC, btw). Very nice. Here, look:

It might do that in other cities too, fiddle with it.
I just flashed TPC which, though otherwise badass, included some Bing application. I begrudgingly tested its maps thing. It's sad and irritating that Microsoft is trying really hard to play copycat (but sucking at it) with Google. Man I hate that company but I've got to admit some of those Bing ads are witty.
Which reminds me, my mom's Linux laptop just arrived, gotta head over and install KDE for her. She's 65, she can barely use the television remote but loves Linux and I love that I don't get nearly as many calls for help as I did when she was using MS. I'll use GMM to see how much crosstown traffic I'm looking at.
Just put all my IRA money into Google, parenthetically.
Doug
i don't remember it giving me street traffic in nyc, but it does now
Is there a package of this? I know Google maps is a hard one to convert because there are extra settings that change after it is installed. I don't know if this version is like that or not. I think it requires B-Compare to see all the changes before and after install.
Just wondering.
Google Maps 3.2.1(#17) Update!
Google Maps 3.2.1(#17) Update! (06/10/2009)
Why no update notification
And now v3.3.1.0 is out... Every time I go searching for a new version, I can't help but wonder why Microsoft has a way to check for updates within their Bing mobile app but Google doesn't?

y'all should go to the new thread for 3.3.1 and other fun.

Hello everyone, I'm pleased to present my new app (available for free on Google Play Store): Open That URL!
OTU is a client-alike application to speed up file shared with the great app Fast File Transfer but in what way? Actually by downloading the file for you! In this first release, it opens the browser, but I plan on just launching download intent (I'm working on it right while I'm writing) so that, together with the above mentioned software, you can share your files easily and really fast.
This software is intended for those devices that are not equipped with NFC Chips, but it's compatible with every Android from FroYo 2.2 and above.
On the next post you'll find changelog and features, while here below you can find the download link.
Please, tell me what you think about it and what feature you would like to see in future releases.

First of all THANKS for working to add features for FFT, And no offending.
The main success of FFT is other end device does not need to install FFT to download files, just opening browser and entering IP address every time is a little headache, present the FFT developer is working on those to make it easy for transfer.
So if you could also think regarding that, it would be nice.
What I say is to think on how to assist FFT to easily receive files on other end device without installing the app.
My opinion is just other end device just need a password to receive file that show in sending device, just like bluetooth pairing
Thanks..
Looks cool, I'll keep an eye on this!
Sent from my very expensive paperweight!

Hello mate,
no offense at all What I thought when developing this little help is the fact that I wanted something to launch directly from my lockscreen and that's all I too think FFT is a great app, and I'm pretty convinced that if my application is useless for most of people (those with NFC for instance), they will at least know FFT and keep it, so I think it's not that bad to have some more visiblity
Anyway, my app does not add any feature to Fast File Transfer, I'm just downloading from a fixed location, no less and no more
I hope nobody gets disappointed by my answer, and if, in any way I offended you, I apologize, since I wasn't meant to be rude
Thanks for commenting, if you all think my app needs any other feature, let me know
Tip: I'm thinking bout a widget (for those who use WidgetLocker) and a Tablet layout
Thanks,
Tiwiz

[APP] [Solved] My 5.0.1 watch face doesn't install on some devices

I've been developing a sample analog watch face that uses 24 hours scale, on request of a friend. It works well for me, as well as for some other people. The problem is that on the friends Samsung device it doesn't install: he clicks install button, and nothing happens. Also another Samsung user reported a similar issue: the app installs, but stays invisible on the apps list, and no new watch face appears. I can not reproduce the situation in any way. It works well for me every time, as well from the apk file, as from the alpha channel on the Play Store. Could you guys give it a try?
EDIT: the problem seems to be solved, at least partially: when installed from the Play store, the app behaves well. I suppose it might've been related to this certain user and his environment. Anyway, if someone wants to test the app, I'll be grateful for feedback. The beta version on the Play Store is available for members of the Android Wear Developers G+ community, or you may join this one.

Same problem with my watchface on my LG G3 / Sony Smartwatch 3 ... WF is running in the emulator, but nothing to see in Android Wear App.
I've installed your app on SGS2 CM11 recent nighlty build.
App is in apps list but just like it was a process or service.
App is not visible in apps drawer.
But the new watch face appeared in the list. Watch is S Gear Live.
Screenshots attached.

It is the service indeed. That's the way watch faces based on Google api work. Configuration, if available, should be done in the companion app.
The most recent version there is on the beta channel at the play store - see the OP. Improved layout, two faces to choose from. Thank you for the feedback.

[Renovate EDGE 1.0] Google Play Services/Google+ Locations error

Hey guys,
i have a question regarding to an error with the Locations/People in Google Plus and Google Play Services. I'm using the custom ROM "Renovate EDGE 1.0".
If I could, I would post this question as a reply in the Development Thread, but I have to few posts for doing this.
First of all, I never thought, that such an early ROM could be a so perfect daily driver. Except this issue, I have had realy no problems until now, not even a small one.
Now to my problem. Some of my friends and I share our locations via Google+ to each other.
When I now open the Locations in Google+, I get an empty "map".. Or it's not even an map.
There, where the map should be, I only get an empty grey area and an error comes up in the notification bar.
Error:
Google Play services error - Google+ is having trouble with Google Play services. If the problem persists, please contact the developer for assistance.

I installed the ROM twice with an clean install, I made Google+ an system app and user app and again and cleared any types of cache I know for Google+ and Play Services.
I realy don't know further.
Here are some screenshots:
Thank you so much for reading and perhaps for help.
Maybe mwilky can fix that issue in his next update, but, as I sad, I can't reply on his thread. I hope, he will read this thread .
I you need more information or some logfiles, please ask me.
