Reboot Into TWRP Recovery Fail - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I've got an Asus Zenfone Pro Max M1 (6/64). And of course I would like to install custom recovery and flash magisk on it.
The thing is after I unlocked the bootloader, and installed the twrp recovery, my device won't reboot into twrp recovery. It goes blank every time and when i reboot normally, it boots up fine. And when I try getting into recovery from there, the stock recovery comes out. Also the same thing happens when I tried to install redwolf recovery.
I tried finding the solution here and everywhere else, but none helped. If anyone could help me, that would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

There's no solution to this but i also faced same.
Only Trial and Error will work.
Here's what worked for me if i remember correct
Boot to fastboot
flash twrp again (have to do this every time after booting to stock recovery )
Keep holding vol down first
Then press and hold power
It should work now
Its tricky and no one seems have written a guide on why this happens on how to solve this but don't give up, its doable! Best of Luck

Yes, the issue is there. Try the above method or you can also flash a different version of recovery which if i remember correctly was shared in another forum (I am not sure if XDA rules allow me to say it). It was for those whose TWRP froze, search on forum.

Hi, thanks for your suggestion.
I've been trying your suggested method since morning and unfortunately, no joy.
Any other way you might have known?

This is the one mate. After booted into system, I updated the twrp using the official twrp app. But it works just fine without the latest updated version too.

The solution to your problem is somewhere in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfone-max-pro-m1/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-1-x-t3787134
I noticed someone (user: Jide1 if I'm not mistaken) posted the twrp version that's compatible with pie rom which has problem loading into twrp. Look it up.

[Q] Unusual bootloop won't quit

So, I was running stock kitkat on a refurbished Nexus 7. After some months it just suddenly restarted and entered a bootloop. I can turn the device off and enter fastboot mode, but the recovery just seems to be broken. I've tried using the Nexus root kit utility, and "successfully" flashed 5.0.2. It said I should wait even more than 10 minutes, and that the device would seem to be on a boot loop (again), I let it do its magic all night but nothing happened. I unlocked the device and flashed 4.4.4 and I'm having the same problem, after "succesfully" flashing, the device enters the bootloop. Any ideas are much appreciated Thanks!
Please try to reflash the bootloader manually using fastboot

On later attempts, it gave me this one:

I'm still on a bootloop, recovery gives me a bootloop as well :/

Don't really know, I downloaded it more than 6 months ago... I think I'll re-download it and give it a try, if it doesn't, I'll try the recovery you told me. Sorry for the late reply, I don't get much free time nowadays :/ And thanks for all your support, if this gets me to a fully operable Nexus 7, I'll definitely make sure to get you a coffee! Cheers!
---[EDIT]---
I tried twrp recovery, it installs successfully but it keeps getting in a bootloop :/ I'll re-download ADB, hopefully this will help 'cause I'm running out of solutions

What are you trying to flash? Custom kernel? Stock boot.img?
Either the .img is corrupt/incompletely downloaded OR you have unlocked boot loader using unofficial method.
1. Download the boot.img and try again
2. If it still gives error, you do not have a proper bootloader unlock. Try flashing twrp that is confirmed working by you, to verify if bootloader is properly unlocked or not.

If you had spent enough time searching on xda, you would have got the solution. I posted a solution to this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-2-laser/help/unable-update-to-marshmallow-via-ota-t3389876 And the thread is marked "solved" which means it worked.
sziraqui said:
Apparently, your current recovery version does not match with your current firmware version. There are two possible workarounds-
1. Wipe system by executing "fastboot erase system" in fastboot mode. Then reflash latest official asus lollipop ROM. This will fix the recovery and firmware mismatch and you will then be able to flash MM via stock recovery.
2. If you are experienced with edit8ng updater-script, Extract all contents of MM ota. Open updater-script and remove all asserts and lines that say "abort". Then compress the contents again. (You can't edit without extracting coz zip is signed). Flash this modified ota zip via TWRP.
If you still can't flash it or you are unable to edit updater-script, pm me, I have downloaded the MM ROM, I will send you modified updater-script.
I can even convert this ota into .imgs so that you can flash directly via fastboot

sziraqui said:
alright, download the updater-script from attachment. Flash via TWRP.
Detailed instructions-
First extract entire ota zip. Delete the original updater-script.
Then extract "updater-script_modified.zip"
Copy the extracted "updater-script" to extracted ota at the right location. (META-INF/com/google/android)
Compress the ota files as a zip using 7zip or winrar. Compression level "normal" . DONT USE ANY ANDROID APP FOR COMPRESSING, USE WINDOWS/LINUX APP ONLY.
Flash the modified zip via TWRP recovery

[Solved]P8lite L21, twrp won't run

I just bought the P8lite L21, immediately unlocked the bootloader, installed the B560 update + the following B574 update.
I tried on Linux and on Windows to install twrp via $ adb reboot-bootloader then fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
At the end I also get the "successful" notification. When I want to boot in recovery mode I just have a black screen while $ adb devices says I would be in recovery.
I tried installing twrp over B560 and over B574, both fails. Is there anyone who might know what the problem is or could give me maybe a link to a twrp that worked for him/her? I got all the twrp versions I tried from this forum though.
Thanks in advance for every helping hand,

I am supposed to hold vol+, vol- and the power button the whole time until twrp opens up correct?
Edit: On Marshmallow it seems like you can't root if you dont have twrp installed, that is the bothersome issue.

Why not trying to reflash the twrp(may try another one from official website or of silesh nair on his thread).
I think you might have turn on md5 checksum or another this which keeps verifying the zip and no signature is found.
Reflashing is a good course as it do not erase any data of yours.

Its power button followed by vol up, but hey that recovery ain't gonna help you. Im just saying you to reflash it as it will erase all the data of current twrp recovery which might interfere with another recovery(changes are negligible, but then too).
I gave you link to a 64-bit twrp made by dreamester and silesh nair. Try it and see if it works.
You can not flash stock ROM from TWRP or other custom recovery. You need a PC with Moto Drivers and fastboot tools installed. Then you have to flash the stock rom from fastboot (generally instructions are given inside rom zip in a file called 'flashfile.xml'). I can't say about flashing JX series ROM (maybe it needs you to be on stock first or something like that) but here are the files needed to install Motorola ADB and FASTBOOT drivers and ADB & FASTBOOT tools on windows pc:
https://firmware.center/software/Android/platform-tools/win/ and https://firmware.center/software/Motorola/

To get into stock recovery press VOLUME UP while pressing and holding POWER button but you can't flash custom ROM or wipe SYSTEM from there. For that purpose use Official latest TWRP recovery from their website.

I already have these installed! But when I run RDS and connect my phone in fastboot mode to the computer, RDS doesn't detect it in the program. I mean, the device doesn't show up in the boxes below. But when I run 'fastboot devices' in CMD I can see my device connected. And can you pleeease tell me how to flash ROMs through the stock recovery?

Stock recovery don't flash roms, thats why we use customs recovery. As he mentioned just flash the stock rom, enable usb debugging and oem unlocked. Just flash the files and again flash the recovery which ever suits you and thats it.
Note : take backup first as it wipes your internal storage.

I think reflashing the stock rom is the only thing to do. Read carefully whatever is written in that thread. And see if all the commands are properly exicuted.
I dont know any work around for sim as i have never had that issue. Tell me if its solved or not for just a bit of knowledge.
Edit : just for reference you are not using moto g4 play device, are you?
Standard ROM and recovery cannot be flashed by TWRP, only in fastboot mode.

I would try updating your fastboot. I don't know what "minimal adb and fastboot" is, im assuming some bundle you downloaded somewhere here on XDA. I would try downloading android-tools from the official Android SDK to ensure you have the latest version. Also, I would double check to make sure you have the latest version of TWRP

Hello there, well I have the exact same problem. I downloaded the latest platform-tools from developer.android.com but it didn't seem to help.
Code:
./fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-1-fajita.img
Sending 'boot.img' (31136 KB) OKAY [ 0.770s]
Booting FAILED (remote: 'unknown command')
fastboot: error: Command failed
I tried it on multiple OS, Windows and Mac but also nothing.
Also, here is a screenshot of the on information for my device.
The command does not work with Android 10. Read in TWRP Thread for the solution.

No, unfortunately, I had the same issue. Downgraded by fastbootfiles of Mauronofrio to 9.0.17. Even for Android9 I've the same issue, though latest drivers installed, latest fastboot files Android SDK and latest twrp (twrp-3.3.1-20-Pie-mauronofrio.img)
---------- Post added at 07:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:26 PM ----------
After reinstall 9.0.17 twrp could be installed by fastboot.

Sorry, can't help you. Though following oneplus forum on XDA for 5 yr, I'm still a big noob.
What I did was mentioned above. I was on Android10 OB1 . Downgraded by adb the latest fastbootfiles of Mauronofrio. Just after local update 9.0.17 I was able to fastboot twrp.
Good luck
ok thank's, hope a second trial will be ok. just have to wait a couple of days, need my phone too
