Galaxy S8 ATT Stock SM-G950U wont update. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

Question I have Galaxy s8(SM-G950U) w/ G950USQS5CRF5 and Galaxy s8 (SMG-955U) G955USQS5CRF5 Plus both stock ATT.
both phones will not update ota. always says software is up to date.
Checked AT&T site and new firmware G950USQS5CRH1 is available. Also when searching for firmware can never find ATT Version firmware why is that? thanks

This is exactly the problem I was having but maybe for a different reason. I switched to Verizon as a carrier and some of the BYOD updates would no longer allow FW updates.
I solved by pulling the OTA updates directly from this site https://samsung.firmware.science just pick your model and the current FW version you are on and it will show you what is available. I was out of date 2 versions so I did them both although I might have been able to skip. It really does not take long though.
I updated by putting the update.zip on my SD card and power down then booting into download mode Up Volume + Bixby + Power and applied the updated. Note for some reason the process never found my update.zip in the root of the SD card but it times out after a little while from the Blue screen into the bootloader menu and from there I just chose update and navigated to where I put the file. I have applied 2 updates this way with no issues. I am currently up to version G950USQUCRI3 which is not even listed on the ATT site yet.
I hope this helps.

My problem with your method is that it formats data after you update with the zip from firmware science. Is there a way to skip format

I am not sure what you mean by format data. The method I used updated my phone exactly the way that it when I used to get the updates OTA. Nothing was formatted at all.
The recovery loaded the update.zip and is showed the progress in the screen and when it completed reboot, and the apps were optimized. I loaded 2 versions like this back to back and I have been using the phone for a week now with no issues.
---------- Post added at 08:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:13 PM ----------
I used the method I a typically do for updates from the SD card is essentially what is documented on their site. I pasted below and added a couple of notes.
Step 1.
Download the desired update file.
Step 2.
If you have an SD card in your phone, put the "update.zip" file on the root of it.
Step 3.
Boot the phone into recovery mode by turning the phone off.
Once it's off, press and hold the Bixby, Volume Up, and Power buttons.
When it turns back on, let go of the Power button but keep the others held down.
Once a blue screen appears, let go of all the buttons.
At this point on my phone I waited until the blue screen timed out (about a minute) and dropped to the recovery menu.
Step 4.
Using the volume keys, navigate to:
"Apply update from SD card" if you have an SD card in your phone.
Step 5.
If you have an SD card, press the Power button and wait for it to finish, then you're done

Thanks VideoRoy I will give that a try.

Sorry in Step 5 I should have said navigate to file and then hit the power button but it is pretty straight forward when you get to that point.
Good luck, I hope it works for you.

Dear VideoRoy, I have same problem with my SM-G950U (S8), in some reson i can never find ATT Version firmware over OTT, and use your methotd and see thet is available 5 updates on firmware.science for my phone. But after instal first update my phone is factory reset like use option wipe data factory reset on recovery mode, phone dont apps optimized when totaly reset phone… Thet its afer first update, i have more 4 updates. If is posible to instal only last updates or you must to install each one in a order?

Hola, buenos dias.
Alguien me puede ayudar a actualizar samsung s8 G950U ATT (EL CELULAR LO USO EN MEXICO CON LA COMPAÑÍA MOVISTAR)
PDA: G950USQS5CRH1
PHONE: G950USQU5CRK1
CSC : G950UOYN5CRH1
Quiero actulizarlo pero tengo miedo a que algo salga mal planeo instalarle el firmware G950USQU5DSC1 "VERSION SPRINT O T MOBIL"
Alguien tiene otra forma mas segura de actualizarlo ?

To my knowledge, if you install a custom ROM, this will void your warranty by setting the knox counter to (0x1). Others have said they were able to install custom ROMS and the only time the knox counter would trip is when they proceeded to install TWRP. If this is the case, I would recommend installing your carrier ROM for Orange (French) and then changing your CSC settings to the original carrier so it will reset your phone and reboot recognizing the proper ROM. At this point, your Device Status will show "Original".
Hope this helps!
Thanks, I'm downloading it right now, I know my warranty is avoid, how do I know if I have the right CSC?

You will download your original carrier ROM and install through ODIN. Once installed and the phone has rebooted, you want to change the Device Status from "Custom" to "Original". To do this, enter *#272*(IMEI#)# where (IMEI#) is your 15 digit IMEI number found on your box or by dialing *#06# from your dialer. Once in this menu, select the 3 letter CSC which refers to the carrier ROM you just downloaded.
Hope this helps!

You are getting this code I assume when trying to enter the CSC menu through the dialer (*#272*)?? If so, follow this excerpt from my other thread:
There's essentially 3 parts to your Samsung Galaxy Note 3:
PDA, PHONE and CSC. The PDA is the firmware (software) in your device, the phone is the modem (2G/3G/4G/LTE) etc... and the CSC is the Consumer Software Customization.
The PDA is your software the phone is running and your GUI if I can put it that way. The key components of the device are the Phone and CSC. The phone is the modem of the device which communicates with the network for wireless voice and data connectivity. The CSC is the software that configures the communication between your device and carrier specific network when it comes to data speeds and network connectivity.
You should be able to use the method I suggested to change your consumer software customization (CSC). If this does not work, try this:
Boot into TWRP by powering off your device and once off, power on using Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button (all at once). When you see the Galaxy Note 3 logo, let go and it will boot into TWRP. Once in TWRP, press the corresponding buttons to data wipe/factory reset and wipe cache. Once done, press the button to reboot and try the *#272* method. If this does not work, try the following:
This software application will manually force your CSC since you've rooted your device:
Download and install the busy box application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ricson.busybox
The above is needed for the CSC Changer App to work
Once installed, download and install CSC Changer App: http://d-h.st/IpA
Open the CSC Changer app and select “Change CSC”
This will take you directly to the available CSC codes list on your device. Please note that you will be able to see many codes only if your device’s firmware has multi-CSC
Select your desired CSC and tap on “Install” option
You device will now reboot and when it wakes up, it’ll have the new CSC
Hope this helps!

Do you have an external SD card installed? If so, try unmounting it, taking it out and rebooting.
Hi ggblake, tried that too.
I think the only solution I have is to wait for our great devs at XDA to find à fix.

Cellrama your solution is for the rooted devices. Is there a solution without root and keeping the binary counter and knox?

Once done it downloads my original stock Orange rom and push it to the phone after two or three coffes ( about 20 minutes) my phone restarts as it Was before ( no wipe) and status is back to normal.....

for me a Kies 3 solution worked. i had already latest rom with 'modified' status, funny enough Kies automatically updated it to the latest (same) version after which 'Official' status was restored. did you try that? not flashing with odin or anything like that...
Hi I get it to work another way, kind of weird way but it's done thanks

C'd u pls clarify this point ?
some point (ext4. Img) the flash get stuck
BR
The Kies method is only good IF you haven't flashed the new bootloaders or your latest stock rom for your region has the new bootloaders...
Doing emergency recovery through kies with the new bootloaders and stock rom for your region having old bootloaders = lots of bootlooping and no recovering to stock firmware. You then need to flash the firmware with the new bootloader via ODIN to get out of the bootloops...

"Network unavailable" on manual System update attempt

Just got my Axon 7, shipped from DE to UK, thought I'd try manual software update.
Current version listed as ZTE A2017GV1.0.0B06
It times out with Network Unavailable despite the fact it is connected to WiFi and Chrome works fine as well as everything else needing internet connections.
I am on Three UK, haven't tried updating without a SIM ... is that worth trying? I did see at initial setup I was prompted to accept some sort of 3UK profile though I assumed this is just APN/MMS stuff.
Anyone else having similar problem trying to update?
I see talk of updating to B08 etc, from 2017G --- is 2017G same as 2017GV1... wouldn't want to assume anything this early on in my game
TIA for any tips/advice.
Am really liking this phone though, might be nice to get latest update for security mainly, not sure if many features are added?
Same issue here as it happens, though I'm currently trying to update WITHOUT a sim (didn't appreciate it was nano so new one on order!).
I was thinking it maybe needed one to be present to update, but clearly that's not the case.

Can't speak to the EU version, but I was surprised when my A2017U would not complete initial setup (& update) without the SIM, although wifi was strong. All completed quickly as soon as I popped in the SIM.
Hi,
I have the same issue here.
I've just bought A2017G from Italy (Amazon) and I live in France. Can't have the upade to B08. There is always this message "No network" after a minute of searching. I tried with 4G and Wifi and there is the same issue!
Also can't connect
Same issue here. I am already on B.08 and have wifi/Sim in place.
Mysterious problem
I have tried many solutions but I wasn't able to update :
- used three different sim cards from 3 operators
- removed sim card and worked only on wifi
- used VPN
- tried to update via SD card form the update page and from recovery
... Unsuccessful !
Anyone have idea?
I'm also having the same problem. I live in Sweden and I just got the phone today. Would be nice if I could update sometime soon.
A2017g b06
Greenland here, I also have problems with the connectivity
Maybe ZTE is updating its servers so that the updates can finally deploy at the same time, the same version, for everyone.
Or, maybe... they are silently getting rid of Adups and moving to another kind of upload process, before **** hits the proverbial fan.
Also, Global Axon 7 here, brought via Amazon.es, sent from Germany and now used across Portugal/Spain. Running 0B08.

I can understand that, but even if we put the B08 update file downloaded from ZTE support in SD card, the update can't be processed.
Hello, I had the same problem, I reinitialized the Axon 7, and I copied the file update.zip B09 on the phone, it recognized and installed the file (I was on the b08 before)

Solution found!
I’ve already found the solution for the manual upadate from SD card and it’s easy to do.
Theses instructions are not mine and I’m not responsible of what you do with your phone. I found them inside the update file that I Downloaded then I unzipped.
You will find a PDF document called “ZTE A2017G Upgrade Guide (through an SD Card).pdf”. You can use it to do the upgrade step by step.
Till now, all was OKEY: backup is very quickly with Zte app. The update take about 5 minutes, than the phone restarts automatically.
If you cannot find the B08 update file, try to download it from here: http://www.ztedevice.com/support/detail?id=98CEB24F9FFD433EA99EC424163149A6
Here are the steps (exactly as mentioned in ZTE Upgrade Guide)
ZTE V7 Upgrade Guide (Through an SD Card)
1. Backing Up the Data
1) Download the upgrade package.
Open http://www.ztedevice.com.cn/support and download the upgrade package (update.zip) that matches your phone model. If the downloaded package is not update.zip, unzip the package to obtain update.zip.
Ensure that your micro SD card is at least 3GB.
2) Remove the SIM card before the upgrade. Back up the data and APPs in your phone by using the built-in Backup function. To enable the built-in Backup function of your phone (an SD card must be inserted), select
Backup and Restore from the main menu。
3) Perform data backup.
Note:
You should not remove the SD card during the backup process. To avoid data lost, it is not recommended to cancel the backup process.
4) Verify that the update.zip file in the root directory of the SD card
matches the model of the phone. Do not modify the file name and extension name of the files in the upgrade package.
5) Verify that your phone has enough (at least 30%) power. Charge the phone if required. To avoid data lost or upgrade failure, it is not recommended to upgrade your phone through an SD card when the phone is being charged.
Note:
You should not perform any other operation on the phone during the upgrade process. To avoid upgrade failure, do not forcibly remove the battery.
A normal upgrade should be completed in 2-3 minutes. If the phone does not reboot or show any response in three minutes, you should perform the upgrade process again. If the phone cannot be started, perform a forced upgrade. If the forced upgrade does not work, you should contact an after-sale service agent for support.
2. Upgrade Description
There are two upgrade methods: normal upgrade and forced upgrade.
If the phone cannot be started properly, for example, the phone cannot be started, or the phone does not enter stand-by state, perform a forced upgrade. If the phone can be started properly and the Settings menu can be selected, perform a normal upgrade.
3. Upgrade Steps
A. Normal upgrade (the primary upgrade method)
1) Download the upgrade package that matches the phone model from ZTE official website (http://www.ztedevice.com.cn/support/), extract update.zip from the package, and copy update.zip to the root directory of the SD card (the file name must be update.zip
2) Select System Manager > File Manager> SD Card from the main menu, and verify that the update.zip file in the root directory of the SD card is proper.
3) Tap the main screen is displayed. Tap and select SETTINGS >All setting > Updates>,
4) Click INSTALL, The phone automatically powers off and reboots. the SD
card upgrade screen is displayed,
After the phone is upgraded, it is rebooted again. After the phone starts properly, it is recommended to manually restore the phone to its original factory default settings. The phone is upgraded properly and can be used.
B. Forced upgrade (for the phones that cannot be started or the phones that cannot enter standby state)
1) For a powered-off phone, press and hold both the volume key + and power
key to enter into Recovery mode.
2) Press the volume key - to select apply update from sdcard, and press the power key to confirm it.
3) Press the volume key - to select the update.zip file, and press the power key to confirm it. The phone completes the upgrade process in about three minutes.
4) On the Upgrade Complete screen, select reboot system now and press the power key to confirm it.
4. (Optional) Restoring the Data
If you have backed up data before upgrading your phone, restore the data.
1) Backup and Restore important user information.
2) Perform data restoration.
Note:
Do not remove the SD card during the restoration process. To avoid data lost, it is not recommended to cancel the restoration process.

The file is on ztedevice (link in thread) but i think (as some of other users) that this patch is only for Spain - don't know that for 100% but most ppl that can upadate it with OTA are located in Spain. Also I still get "network unavailable" when I trying to check update (location Poland, phone from UK). But you should can update from B06 to B08 as I can without any doubts via OTA.

I downloaded B09 en wanted to go install it and than the give me the original B08 update in the screen, let see how it works.
As for 1.01.2017 update check start working for me - no more "network unavailable" just "up to date" at B08 a2017g.

Recovery Mode error and does not install TWRP

Hi!
I'm 3 days trying to solve a problem in my J5 and I can not get anything.
About a year ago I bought this device and did the ROOT process of it, I installed TWRP and SuperUser.
I needed to remove the SuperUser and unfollow the root procedure, so I went back to the official Stock Rom.
After about 2 weeks of this procedure the device was no longer starting the bot, tried to enter by the TWRP and simply did not enter as well.
I obtained at the time a bootloader (it was said to be official) and installed via odin.
The Apparatus has come back to life!
Now I'm trying to install TWRP and it just does not install!
When I try to enter recovery mode it displays the following messages in sequence "installing software update", "no command found" and after a minute it goes into a simple recovery.
I tried to change the TWRP odin several times, not the error, appears "pass" and reboots the device, when I try to access the recovery appears always the message above and back to simple recovery.
What could be happening?
Do you know any solution?
Model: SM-J500M
Android: 6.01
Kernel: 3.10.49-99447777 dpi @ SWDD3016 # 1
STOCK ROM: J500MUBU1BPH1_J500MZTO1BPH1_J500MUBU1BPH1_HOME.tar
Complementing:
I was able to solve some of the problem.
As a last attempt I decided to change the USB cables, I used 5 different cables until a good old one of the motorola worked and I was able to complete the process by odin.
Of these cables 4 are original, one being that of the apparatus itself.
Now another problem I noticed is not being able to root in the device.
I can install the TWRP after uploading the rom stock, however when installing the super user via TWRP the device will no longer start and it will be locked in the samsung logo.
I was thinking of installing some CFW, but the ones I find are for another version or have bugs that affect my use, for example the camera does not save photos, can only use a SIM card and not listen to the audio in the voice calls.

Hello thank you so much for taking the time to help me wherever you are.
The problem is that the phone is broken.
The fault started when I wanted to update it and it went out, after a long wait I finally finished updating YouTub and it worked for a day after that the sim 1 did not recognize the card to turn it off to change sim and stayed in an infinite loop .
I want to clarify that my knowledge on phones is to see YouTube and do what they say :silly:
The first thing I did was install the TPWR 3.0.0 but it was not quite right because the touch did not recognize it well so I had to install version 3.1.0-0 which is the one that is currently installed. Then install sideload and microsd almost all the ROMs on this page and only managed to boot (after 1000 reboots) the optupus and another that I do not remember but both after starting did not recognize the sim or wifi or bluetooth and the camera The quality of the image was very poor. I did the wipe of all the ways that could be wipe format data, then each one separately and sometimes I did before and after and nothing works me still with the problem of constant reboots.
I clarify that I do not speak English and that I am using the Google translator.
Thank you very much forum friends for your help.
