Note 3 can't get SIM to detect unless flashing stock ROM (various bootloader/modems) - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I've been struggling with an Note 3 that for some unknown reason doesn't detected the SIM card unless it's flashed with the stock ROM. The stock ROM doesn't include the bootloader/modem and contains only the OS. I've been asking around on the baseband thread[0] about this but I think this is a broader issue as I can get the phone to work (including SIM detection) with custom bootloader/modem.
Below the steps I've taken so far:
Step 01: Recently I acquired a Note 3 and installed LineageOS 14.1 on it.
Step 02: I noticed that the SIM was not detected by LineageOS and read up on this topic via the usual channels (e.g. reddit, xda forums, LineageOS JIRA). Based on the information I gathered I tested various bootloader/modem settings, especially those other reported as working, but couldn't get LineageOS to detect the SIM with any of these. This is where I signed up to this forum and created my first post describing the situation thus far. [1]
Step 03: After the feedback on this thread I confirmed that the bootloader/modem were flashed correctly. To eliminate any other causes of the firmware being broken by redoing most of the tests with Odin (I've mainly used Heimdall up till that point). Still LineageOS didn't detect my SIM even with combinations that worked for others. [2]
Step 04: To exclude it was an issue specific to LineageOS I installed ~10 other custom ROMS from different groups and using different versions of Android. In all of these the SIM was still not detected. [3]
Step 05: After installing the stock ROM (without the matching bootloader/modem) the Note 3 was suddenly detecting the SIM and I was able to make phone calls. [4]
Step 06: I expressed my confusion about the earlier not working bootloader/modem not working with the other ROMs but that those did work with the stock ROM. [5]
This is where we are now. I don't fully grasp why the stock ROM (which doesn't include bootloader/modem) does detect my SIM whilst all the other custom ROMs don't although they're having the same bootloader/modem binaries that should make it work.
Anyone has experienced this before as well or know what might be the issue?
Thanks!
.san

Where are your getting the stock ROM? As far as I know, roms on sammobile.com, updato.com, and samsung-firmware.org all contain a bootloader and modem with the exception of some 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 ROMs.

Direct ROM download link: https://mega.nz/#!VU13SY5J!GrYB2Wqbo7DNs_Bbg8trkUcftaeES8jfgWMqXepv2cw
[EDIT] Perhaps I'm wrong and this ROM does include the modem and bootloader. In that can I can perhaps (don't know how) extract the modem/bootloader from that and combine it with a custom ROM. But if it doesn't contain these binaries than I'm clueless on what makes the stock ROM detect the SIM where other ROMs don't.

Och that is sloppy... not sure why I found that in the Note 3 ROMs section but I should have double checked. Its still weird that that specific ROM does work with the pre-flashed modem/bootloader whist other ROMs don't, right?
I think I have a complete firmware package (that requires Odin/Heimdall) from sammobile somewhere. I'll double check that one.

you can use BL and CP files form here. and flash them separately via odin and check if it works.

That is what I tried to explain in the OP. These bootloader/modem combinations ONLY work with the stock ROM I linked to.

As I said its not a Note 3 stock rom.
Its a custom /ported rom.
Stock sammobile. Updato.com etc

That is not a stock ROM, it is custom ROM that doesn't contain a bootloader or modem. You need to flash the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com or updato.com.

I did a quick test with a full stock firmware package from sammobile. Also with this package I get the SIM card detected. The moment I flash, using TWRP, another ROM (just tested a recent LineageOS 14.1 nighty) the SIM card is no longer detected. As far as I'm concerned this excludes the stock firmware from the pile of options and re-affirms my suspicion that it is something related to the ROMs themselves. The Samsung ROMs (either official or ported) do something different than any of the other ROMs... at least on this device.

Its your phone then thats the problem.

Which stock ROM are you flashing?

N9005XXSGBPL4_N9005PHNGBOJ1_PHN which I got from this sammobile page.

That did look like the latest ROM.
Just to confirm but flashing stock ROM, flashing twrp, and flashing a custom ROM gives you the sim problem?

yes. this is weird.
but on the other hand just to know.
did you try different sim's ? may be the issue is related to that particular sim card.
i too have note 3 N-9005. but i never faced this type of situation ever.
my current Bootloader (BL) is N9005XXUGBPH2
Baseband (CP) is N9005DXUGBOK3
Current Rom is AryaMod Note 7 Port 2.1
i have used Ressurection remix, C9 pro upto version 4, magma Nx, Los 14, Arya mod v.9 on this same BL and CP. and NO issues so far.
may be you can try once more with these same settings/files as mine.
1st Flash Stock Rom
2nd Check from Phone Info your current settings in the Firmware tab (backup it's apk now, so that you can install it later without logging in G-services.) screenshot attached. Download the SAME BL & CP and flash it via ODIN.
3rd if it's the same, then go ahead and use TWRP 2.8.7.0 (this version is what i use).
4th now flash any of these roms written above. start with RR as the Rom is lesser in size.
5th (optional) if you want to flash a different kernel too, but flash after rom if the kernel included does not work.
now tell us the results, if the issue is resolved or not.
ONE MORE THING.
this model N9005 does not have LTE Band 40 support so if your network only provide LTE on band 40 like mine does. LTE wont work. Only 2g or 3g will work. and stock rom's 1st option of network is 2g or 3g i think.

HI,
think I'm having the same problem here. Except for me the official 14.1 version is detecting my sim card. All other "unofficial versions" 15.1 &16 are not detecting my SIM card. Any workarounds ?

Ive had the issue to with even the touch wiz variants of arya mod and others I'm in the united states though and I have to do tmo variants of aosp. Im using a emmc brick bug unlocked note 3. I'm on vzw btw. Im worried to do a full flash because ive seen mixed things on doing a full Odin update on the emmc brick bug phones saying it reverses the unlock

Help : Sim Card not available anymore ...

Ever since I've flashed a new CM rom today for my I9500 device, I always see that the sim card cannot be found. I see the icon on the notifications bar that shows that I don't have a sim card.
It could also be that I've flashed a bad modem, as I tried to find out how to overcome an issue that I kept having on roms, that the other person kept hearing himself twice.
I've tried flashing other roms (with wiping of everything except internal&external storage, of course), but it didn't help.
I've tried putting the sim card on another device (Nexus 5) and it worked fine, and I also tried to put a different sim card, and it didn't work on I9500...
Can anyone please help?
What happens when you install a stock ROM using Odin?
ok, I flashed an old modem, and it worked:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58658207&postcount=2729
Sadly, the calls still have issues, but at least the sim card identification is ok.

I actually started to download it, and then decided to try an old modem first. it works. Sadly, I still have calls issues.
If you know which modem I should use (I live in Israel), please let me know.
I didn't have this issue on my previous device (I9300), and I really like AOSP roms. I hope I won't need to come back to TouchWiz just because of this...

How did you find this information?
Also, isn't what you wrote the roms, and not the modems?
Sammobile.com. A complete firmware package will consist of two strings of letters and numbers, PDA and CSC. The PDA string is also used to identify the bootloader and baseband, thus what I'm providing is just the modem.

A total newbie flasher needs help

Hi.. I'm in way over my head trying to install a more debloated Rom than the original stock. Unfortunately I didn't succeed very well.
I tried two different ROMS and both of them turned the Sim off and on every second or so. Lots of *pling* noises followed by a message that the Sim card was or wasn't present. It changed so much back and forth that I didn't even get a chance to enter the pin. I belive it is because of some combabillity issues between the rom and baseband/radio version
This lead me to the question: How do I know what rom and baseband would be the most suited for me? I'm living in Denmark (nordic country), but I simply can't figure what rom that is compatible with what baseband.
Boot into Odin mode and verify the model number. Then go to Sammobile.com, download a rom for your country, and install it with Odin.
Did you buy the phone in the country where it is being used?

Sorry if what I'm asking is obvious, but when I install a custom rom, I also need to make sure I install a compatible radio for my area, right?
Sammobile is only stock ROMS, right? And I'm trying to debloat her phone. So when installing a custom rom from this forum and either the reception is bad, it doesn't register Sim card properly or the like.. It might be because I need another baseband than the one that came with the rom right? And what do I need to look for in that regard?
Sorry, but I find it pretty complicated.
I recommend flashing a completely stock ROM, set it up, and make sure everything is working properly. If it doesn't work properly on a stock ROM, it is unlikely it will work properly on a custom ROM.
I find it best to run the latest bootloader and modem regardless of which ROM will be used with the phone.
Problems can sometimes occur when flashing current ROMs over old bootloaders and modems.

Thank you for the already helpful reply.
The thing you say about always flashing newest modem regardless of rom, is very helpful. I didnt even know you could do that. But my problem persist:
I already flashed back to stock, and it runs fine. SO far so good. The problem is that out of 16 GB, the bloatware is justing taking up to much space. But the last two rom I tried both had problems recognising the SIM card (toggled present/not present all the time).
Thats not the case on stock.. So how do I find the proper modem for my phone to use with a custom rom?
I keep seeing a link to sammobile, but all I can find is the bloated stock rom (or I dont know what to look for). Can I grab just the modem somewhere?
When installing a custom rom, it changes the current modem right? AFAIK I have to flash the proper modem afterwards, right?
And therein lies my problem: I dont know how to find the most suited one for my country (which is denmark). And the one that comes with the roms seems to be the wrong ones.
PS: A follow up question: Kernel and baseband/radio/modem is not the same, right? The kernel is not region specific, as the baseband/radio/modem, right?

Custom ROMs can't change your modem, they can't write to those partitions.
In other words, your modem will be the same no matter what. The only way to change it is to flash the appropriate modem files or an actual stock ROM.
SO with the stock rom working now, the modem/rom combination would not be the culprit if something doesnt work afterwards?
What could have been the issue with the sim card connecting and disconnecting every second on the other rom I tried? (Iperium/Imperial something)

What I said is that a custom ROM can't change your modem. But that doesn't mean it can't be affected by your modem.
You may want to read Imperium ROM's install instructions very carefully, cuz I'm pretty sure you missed something important.
Doh.. You might be right.. Ill try flashing the tar files in Odin.
But I just recently got my phone to behave when connecting on Odin.. It also connected back and forth all the time. Putting a USB hub in the middle solved it though (and made it possible to revert to stock). Any idea wht that was about? I reckon either some driver or USB power problem? But Im really fumbling understanding it all, and when it acts up at the same time, even the most simple problems can be hard to see through (because there is always the uncertainty that I misunderstood something basic)..
Just having this conversation helped me understand a lot better how the ROMs and modem is connected (or more precise: How they are not).
And I actually may have had the right baseband all along (Nordic Countries). I will know when I tried flashing the rom again.
Thank you very much
It doesn't matter where you are from, the phone should work with any baseband in any country.
The thing is that some ROMs (like Imperium here) may require a different modem to function properly. In this case, it may require the PG1 modem (listed in the Imperium thread) to solve your problems.
Before flashing a stock ROM, confirm the model # in download mode.
If you want a debloated stock ROM, you could flash a stock ROM, flash TWRP recopvery, flash supersu for root, and use Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall apps.
So right now I tried flashing the Resurrection Remix ROM, but it wont make any calls (a voice just says that the number cant be reached, even though I know the numbers exist). What could be the case there?
The modem and bootloader may be too old.
can it also be to new?
I have consulted the below site several times, but the link is dead to the page where I can look up what modem to use.
Can someone please point me in the right direction of which to use?
This site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
What modem should I choose for my phone? Living in Denamrk and trying with the ressurection remix rom? I tried 3 different of the modems starting with XX but all have the same problem: I cant make any calls. It just says that "there isnt any members on the selected number".
Making calls works fine on stock rom

The ones linked in the Imperium ROM thread are the newest.
And no, it can't be too new.
It's probably something related to your phone model not being fully supported by the ROM.
JDCTeam ROMs should work, because they support a wide range of S4 models.
I got stock rom to work (again again)
And now I managed to flash the JDC Team you recommended and still having the baseband from the stock rom (Which were able to make calls)
But whatyaknow.. I STILL cant make outgoing calls on the custom roms! What in the world can be the problem? I spent the whole day on this.
.. I should be able to make outgoing calls without flashing Gapps, right?
Yes, you should be able to make calls without gapps.
You flashed the latest stock rom and confirmed everything works?
You confirmed the model number in download mode?

Need N900W8 Bootloader & Modem & ROOT?

There is no MM bootloader and modem because Samsung never released a MM build for the Note 3.
Yes, just flash twrp and Chainfire's supersu.
@audit13 do you know how to get the modem and bootloader from a stock firmware (tar.md5) ?
Not sure if you can extract it from a stock rom but it may be easier to just flash the entire rom in Odin.

There is a custom kernel for stock note3 lolipop firmware which is called lean kernel, idel kernel, ater97 kernel and shinto kernel.... Do ur research before saying thinks u don't knw about ok bro.
@jgun007, I said "AFAIK", I never said there wasn't a kernel for the Canadian note 3 sm-n900w8 which is the model referred to in the subject line of this thread and discussed in this thread.
I see that lean kernel is for the n900t (T-mobile note 3) which is not the same model as the Canadian note 3: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488233
I see idel kernel here but I don't see the Canadian note 3 model listed as being compatible: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt/kernel-idlekernel-leankernel-fork-t3241582

How can I flash a radio onto a different ROM?

I have used various ROMs on various phones over the years. Each ROM with its merits and demerits.
I have used many ROMs on my N900 (international version) and found the Dr Ketan L24 the most suitable for me while A-Basher has the best radio signal (my model of phone seems generally plagued by a weak signal reception or possible signal attenuation).
1. Can I flash the radio from A-Basher (latest version) on to Dr Ketan (latest version) without issue? I suspect the radios have different ROM bases.
2. If yes (my research shows it can be done albeit it with possible unwanted side effects from the modem flashing), what is the proper procedure in order to minimise unwanted glitches?

Can their modem be flashed interchangeably without my phone glitching. I tried something similar to that 3 years ago and was rewarded with no signal/invalid IMEI. I want to try it again but a little differently (and properly) this time. How can it be done (I have the install zip for both ROMs)?
Namely, how do I extract the modem from a custom ROM and flash it onto another one without compromising my WiFi, GSM and IMEI functionality?

N910U Sim Not Working On Custom Rom

I have a galaxy note 4 exynos n910u (treltexx) with stock rom (6.0) everything works fine so i decided to install custom rom. First it was hard to find the rom for it after i found few i flashed one.
RR with twrp 3.3 after flashing phone was working like usual but when i interted the sim card it did not detect it so i tought it might be the rom what causing it then i flashed the stock with odin and sim was working fine so i flashed lineage same issue again evwn then i tought it was rom but no matter rom i try sim was not getting detected (exept stock) .
Thing i notice was there was no imei number after dialing *#06#*
So i found the new rom Note 7FE edition android 7 i gave it a try same thing no sim detected but this time i was getting IMEI number
Also my phone is N910U and showed Spark nz logo at boot and i'm in india but sim works fine on stock get 4g and everything and also when i install any rom it say N910C ony Note 7FE edition one said N910U
Is there any way to fix this issue
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks in advance

I wrote to you on the telegram channel also - the 910U has a weird modem (Intel) which has issues with the RIL (radio layer interface).
Also the developer has no phone note 4 910U so that he can test it and get logs to see errors.
As for all the peeps with this model - "It is what it is" - deal with it.

I'm not sure if this will work but you have a backup of your stock roms modem partition you could yry dirty flashing it to your custom rom. You could also use a root file manager and copy your stock roms csc files and place the in a flashable .zip and dirty flash that to your custom rom.

Wrong. Only custom rom with root access.

Opps , I mean rooted stock roms. I've noticed conflicts with custom roms if the rom manager has the same settings as GRX.
n910u is trhplte

Your welcome, I was hoping it would have worked
Did you try creating a .zip with your working csc's and flash that in twrp as well?
