Anyone seen MKBHD's recent pixel 2 xl video? ?? - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

So when i seen the thumbnail and title i had to watch it and jeez at least from my point of view dude was right! I was running completely stock no Root no kernel just stock at the time and i didn't realize my phone had slowed down at a noticeable rate from when i first bought the phone Back in December until i watched that video! Obviously the simple solution was to scale down animations right? So i did that and bam phone was running at full speed again BUT my issue was that for a phone this expensive, timely updates and patches, made by Google, and a stock Android experience one shouldn't have to go through anything like that to keep their phone running at full speed right? But anyway after watching that i decided to give the final beta a try and oh man I fell deeply in love with it especially the gestures. I do think the recent cards seriously need to be optimized much better because trying to swipe through them to get back to a specific app a few pages back can be really annoying. Then i got the notification for the official pie release so of course i upgraded. The battery life, speed, and fluidity is what stood out to me the most! It was perfect! Now I've been using only one custom kernel while on Oreo and that's Flash's so i decided to give that a try on Android pie and the speed and battery life still improved! From the day i got this phone I've never experienced this type of speed and battery life before. It's just freaking amazing and made me fall in love with my pixel again lol. Shout out to flash and the squad!
Any thoughts on your experiences?

I haven't run into any of the lag issues, but that's probably because I run a custom ROM/kernel. I did watch some videos of the lag and that would drive me insane!

Read an article yesterday that a few P2XL's out there are experiencing this and google is replacing the phones. Apparently it's related to a hardware issue.

I saw that too. From what I gleaned, the lag must make the phone practically unusable in order to qualify for a replacement.

[Q] Nexus 7 Swiping Touch Screen Issue

I bought a Nexus 7 today and have found that the touch screen is not very responsive with swiping. It seems to work fine pressing buttons (although maybe a little too sensitive as I found I would dbl type the odd letter) but doesn't want to swipe. If I view a webpage I can not scroll, it just Zooms. If it does scroll it goes to far etc...
Here is a short video showing the problem.
Argh.. being a noob it won't let me post a url directly. So if you go to youtube and append this to the url
Code:
watch?v=mBnvVBZqyGY&list=UUs3SFF_TLRY9u4YOAx1GEsg&index=1&feature=plcp
it should load the video.
Is this a hardware defect? If so I will take it back in the morning. What a pain though and not a good first step away from Apple products.
Any thoughts on this are appreciated.
Regards,
Luke
Well, I couldn't seem to find much about this problem so I'm going to take this back to the store today. Should I risk getting another one or try a different tab? Will the Nexus last or will I need to replace it within a year?
Thanks

Does the new 4.1.2 update improves the scrolling issue? Will the performance be smoother like the higher end phones or the ipod's U I?

Well I just received the update and I find the touch screen to be a bit smoother, but not what I was hoping for. But I still think this tablet and jelly bean is great!

Well I fixed my problem by buying the IPAD3. I had a hard time convincing myself to stray from Apple to begin with and although this may have been an "anomaly" my first impression of the Nexus 7 was extremely hindered. In comparison, my first impression with my first Apple devices were mind blowing and that sticks in my mind. In my opinion, Google Nexus 7 should have done a better job ensuring peoples first impressions were better met by spending more money on quality control.
I haven't seen any videos or complaints about the screen issue I suffered from so I wonder this will be a new breed of screen issues as mine was from a new batch.
Cheers,
L
I've never had any problems with swiping on my nexus until the 4.1.2 update. Before the update everything was butter. After the update I found that swiping between screens sometimes didn't respond. I've also noticed this with the drop down menu and it's frustrating to get it to stay in place without automatically retracting. In Google's defense I did root my Nexus bf the update and maybe flashing the update from cwm instead of the stock recovery caused this issue.
Apparently its a bug in 4.2.X? Had the same issue in 4.2.1, went to CM10 (4.1.2) and everything is working fine... Please star this issue at android issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39892
With a 100% clean factory image flash of 4.2.1 this issue is constant and remains. Any very quick swipe oftentimes makes the screen not scroll at all, regardless of app, regardless of screen I'm on. Extremely irritating issue. Please do star that issue.

Has anyone had luck fixing this issue?

LG G4 performance

So I bought my G4 from T-mobile yesterday as I did the initial install it feels choppy and laggy. After all the google play updates and restart the phone was still laggy when I move from app to app, home screen to setting and back. What I found out that help was changing the layout in Setting from Tab View to List View as you navigate around the phone like what I did previously everything became smooth and no longer laggy. Havent run into any issue with battery drain, wifi, touch screen, heat as most users describe yet will update if I find alternative solution.
After a fresh start (after factory reset, ROM flash, OS upgrade), the system does lots of indexing and set up, leading to a laggy phone and high battery drain. Give it a couple of days to settle down.
Yeah mine was same first startup is slow feels so laggy. But now feels great and battery life is also improved. I disabled most of google apps only have gmail.

Ahhh indexing that sounds quite about right for a moment I thought because UI itself throttle down the cpu of the phone so it seems laggy. Thanks for info hope it gets better in a couple of days as for apps that are not needed which bloatware apps do u guys disable so it doesnt run in the background and such?
Mine almost seems as if the phone doesn't have the resources to handle high usage. I'm waiting patiently for root so we can slim it down and better utilize cpu scaling (on demand, performance, etc)

The G4s (And I guess along with other phones) do have a sizable amount of bloatware installed as well. Just looking at the apps pre-installed from out of the box, there's quite a bit for a brand new phone.
Even though my G4 is broken in now, I found that after I disabled a buttload of these apps, it felt a bit snappier.
And I guess as a recommendation since you just got the phone. Replace the text messaging app ASAP! Stock is garbage, after I imported about 10'000 messages from my old phone, it slowed down as if I had it for a while. After replacing it with Textra. It's smooth as butter. Best decision I've ever made, and I generally hate leaving stock app for another one because I prefer less clutter.
Another one is to replace the stock keyboard with something like SwiftKey. This is a no brainer after using the stock keyboard for a while.
Some choose to replace Chrome as well with Firefox, or nochromo.
Just my top 3 recommendations for our G4s. After doing these 3, everything felt a lot better.

My G4 works just amazing and it is very smooth and snappy. My version is H815L.
Exactly one must wait about two days so it all settled down. A factory reset helps if your phone didn't come with the newest update 5.1 or what not. But yeah
Mine didn't come with too much bloat if at all so I never had any lag issues, but using Textra and SwiftKey helped a with speeding it up. The stock messaging app wasn't cutting it

It is getting smoother and snappier but still see that animation lag when you're at home screen and press app drawer..do that multiple time and you will see the jitter. BTW I also disable alot of unnecessary app dont know if this come into play and also an option in Battery Setting where it say to reduce game graphic I turn that off:good:. Hopefully it is running at higher cpu/graphic frequency. Question does anyone know what OEM UNLOCK is in Developer menu?
I can play godfire without any issues
Oh look, it's you!!

Not Impressed...

From the 2 hours so far with my S8+ (Had to get it for temp until my UK variant comes in).
I am using the ATT variant and am hoping my Exynos version will not lag as bad as this damn thing. My Axon 7 with stock rom just rooted ran circles around this thing.
Pull the notification menu down = dropped frames
Scroll apps drawer = dropped frames
Animation and Transition effects at 1x = Choppy dropped frames
Everyone keeps saying it's a myth that Samsung's software is not bloated and slow anymore like TW days but I am not impressed this far.
I'm torn because this phone is really beautiful hardware with just slow software.
*Edit* looks like this almost non existent on the Exynos variant so I'm pleased now.

The fact it's been present on Best Buy display models, T-Mobiles display and this phone I doubt that. It seems to happen more when running in WQHD for what it's worth. I have disabled a **** ton of bloat with package disabler and it's still not as smooth as the Axon 7 was not my 6s+.

The phone is not a *lag fest* it just drops frames and it's noticeable to the naked eye. For instance pull the notifications menu down to your quick shortcuts and collapse the entire menu back to the home screen, you can notice frame drops for that 1 sec function. It's not as fluid as the expansion itself.
Screen transitions such as the fade out to home I see it ever so slightly. It's not laggy as in the cpu/ram is over worked it's just a bloated launcher and possibly ****ty/suboptimal cpu/gpu scheduler.
The only reason I notice this specifically as it's what originally drove me from Samsung years ago. Well that and the locked bootloaders.
We shall see if it's as noticeable with the Exynos variant when it ships out this week.
Lag? My rippin lightening fast! Had all the other tech guys at my job also blown away with its speed and fluidity. Blows away Apple too.

I've been pulling down notification all day because messages are coming in and don't see frame drops....do I need glasses?...im trying to replicate your problem but I cant....
The only lag I see is when exiting apps , The animation pauses for a split 2nd and then goes away . I think it's a touch wiz launcher thing because when I use Nova launcher I get no lag at all
One thing I wish touch wiz would stop doing when opening a folder on your home page don't take up the entire screen To access the apps inside the folder .
Fastest phone I've had, no lag here or anything like that here

Did you even check the video posted....clearly not.

Not as fast/snappy as I was expecting ?... Any one else agree? TMO 950U

Hi guys, so I pre-order the S8 and am very happy with the design of the phone but performance has left much to be desired. It just doesn't feel as snappy as lets say my OP3. Granted, OP3 has 6gb of ram but still, the S8 considerably feels sluggish. Chrome browser stutters all the time, even with only a few tabs open for example.
I have tried decreasing the animation/transition speed under devl options (which I know is subjective) but still the same...
Anyone else in the same boat? Anything to remedy this? I am really hoping for Root to be available.
I guess I'm just venting a little lol.
Yeah, I have the exynos version and it feels slow... Making all the animations 0.5x kinda helps but I'm still disappointed.
Let the phone get "broken in". Use it for a few days, things get a lot snappier after the system learns your usage patterns. I'm also getting better and better battery life (first day I barely had 1.5hrs SOT with my regular usage, a week later I was getting 4-5hrs easily, even though my usage pattern did not change).
However wiping the phone will reset this. I experienced this a few times in the past 3 weeks I had the phone.
Totally incorrect, this is the fastest smoothest Android I've ever used. I've been in the iPhone camp since the 6s and had the 7 as well. We all know how fast and smooth the new iPhones are, well this phone is as fast and smooth. I've had it running 7 days straight while opening and running dozens of apps, this is a beast. No lag and smooth af scrolling and navigation. Snapdragon here
To sum it up, this device is a pleasure to use. And no fkin way will I use a stock Android. The Galaxy user experience adds so much added value to the phone.

Me too and I've had three. A AT&T S-835 version and two UK Exynos versions. One of the Exynos had a pink screen and got returned. In the context of this thread I'm assuming "fast" means page opens, scrolling, and transitions. All three of my phones performed impressively in those areas. To the point as a long time Android user it makes you go "wow."
There are a bunch of threads here where people are complaining about a variety of performance issues. 99% of the time those problems are user induced. We all love Android's flexibility but it means no two phones are alike. Based on age, quality, and design of the apps people use one or two "bad" apps can create issues across your phone. Then there's the "freezing" crowd who take out an app that another app that's still alive is dependent on and they have issues. Look at the Bixby remapper and the performance problems it created. One thing I've noticed on my Exynos phones is that the Samsung Device Maintenance app does a terrific job of proactively managing power hungry apps and those that remain alive unnecessarily in the background.
As for 4GB vs. 6GB of RAM that doesn't really fly unless you always and intentionally keep a slew of apps running in the background. Every time I've checked I've had plenty of free RAM available and no app I've gone back to in recent apps hasn't been alive when I've needed it. If there's a single app that itself needs more than 4GB of RAM than it's a developer fail because the average Android phone has far less than 4GB of installed RAM.

New firmware update released today/yesterday.
Bluetooth and app installs are the two things that show performance issues best. When I connected to my truck's Bluetooth, every phone before it took around 20 seconds to connect, but the S8 connected immediately.
App installs are also seemingly immediate as well. I never get any lag or stuttering when installing apps, even while playing games.
That's my benchmark for how fast a phone is. Oh, and cold booting is 30 seconds, S7e on U FW is 38 seconds.
Yeah definetly noticed this too. I still blame Samsung's touchwiz. The S8 took a huge hit last night when I tried video calling on Whatsapp and send a few texts and the same time and damn the phone heated up and lagged hard on me. Hoping the update containing daydream will fix a few of these issues and give us that damn button remapping back.
Smart switch restore and the shortcutter app made my phone sluggish. Factory reset and avoid both made my phone silky smooth with over 100 apps installed.

Phone got sluggish over time

Hey guys!
Title says it all. Got brand a new device last month (build date 11/1/2017), which started to decrease in overall performance after some weeks, meaning snappiness is gone, ui experience doesnt feel as smooth as it used to.
Nothing helps, already full wiped. Clean flashed android 9.0. Apps arent the source, since it's right there after a full wipe with just the standard apps.
Only factor seems to be "time". Since I am not the only one with that problem (see marques here://youtu.be/5_5zZnuB71w), I wonder who can relate and found the culprit.
Thanks!
I will not say I did not notice performance issues. But clearing of apps definitely did help. Also with the latest Android pie update it is back to its original smooth performance.

already did that, before full wiping. since the latter didnt help, it didnt help either.
I can't say I've ever experienced lag on my pixel 2 xl. It's been going so strong since a few months ago when I got it. With pie it feels like it just got smoother and looks like it's actually holding animations at 60fps no frame drops it's very nice
I can count on one hand the number of times I've observed noticeable lag/jankiness on my P2XL, and it almost always happens when I try to do too much after rebooting, before the system has settled. On prior Android devices, I would routinely clear the background apps, but my P2XL doesn't seem to require that. It runs just fine without me micromanaging it. I *do* use SD Maid (in Google Play) about once a week, so that probably helps. I also use Nova Launcher because I can't get used to the stock launcher. And I reduce all animations to 0.5x (Settings > Dev options).
Mine is definitely not sluggish at all. Snappy as ever, and nicer now with Pie.
yea first pixel 2 xl i got (this one is a replacement) seemed to get a little less snappier from time to time, but always got back on track. so i know the real fluid and lagfree pixel experience.
but as this case (and the yt video) shows, it can go another route, too. question is, is it just a hardware thing?

Highly doubt it's a "hardware thing" Snapdragon 835 is s great SoC, your lag could be due to a few things, number of apps installed, modifications to the system (ie magisk, Xposed, kernel, etc) rogue apps. I've had no issues with slowdowns or lag, no sure if you're stock or not but I run AquriOS with Flash kernel and magisk root, and everything runs flawlessly.

Re reading your original post, it's either a hardware malfunction or you are getting used to the"snappiness" of the device and you are feeling it's not fast enough. TBH my device runs as nicely as it did they say I got it.

could it be a hardware malfunction if the benchmarks all perform as expected?
i sure didn't get used to it, since i had my original pixel 2 xl (this one is a replacement) for more like half a year without feeling less snappiness
Fast just like a day one. Ive judt realized even MKBHD the best tech youtuber cant be trusted anymore. Hes the camera guy. He keeps mentioning he cant go anywhere else because the pixel 2 xl camera is too good and i agreed but recently he jumped to oneplus 6 and it was a lie that it is his daily driver. There is no reasom to
The performance is not hat much different. Check xda analysis. Numbers cant lie. Pixel somehow is smoother. I own S9, OP6, and 2XL and i knew what is what. Stop watching too much youtube videos. They all are hired by oneplus

you mean i watched a yt video and then got the idea that my phone is slow? oh boi..
There's plenty of people complaining on the same issue in the comments. Makes me concerned. So far i didn't experience any sluggishness on my device. Today i feel very happy about my choice for phone, because i got an opportunity to spend minutes with Note 9 and oh boy, do i not miss Samsung... That's like getting back to Nexus 6... Crazy.
Official Pie has been running smoother than DP2 through DP5 for me. No complaints here. Still wish RAM management was better but that's been on the aggressive side since day 1.

MKBHD is not lying when he said the oneplus 6 is smoother. Anandtech which is a reputable source confirms that the OnePlus 6 is smoother and faster than any phone on the market. The 2nd fastest phone is not the pixel, it's the xiaomi mi mix 2s.
The issue I have is my phone works prefect and then will just stutter...like lag and almost freeze up for a moment. Resetting doesn't fix.
Been having issues as well last month. Started fresh and wiped with pie and still lags. Not sure what's happening. Cannot figure it out. No rogue apps. Haven't installed a new app in weeks.
The phone just hangs more often now. Never had this issue since I got the phone around December.
