haven't received the android 9 pie update yet.. - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Had anyone else not received it yet? I know I can flash via fastboot, but I'd rather not.. I thought all phones would have received the update already. I just purchased the phone yesterday..

What cell service are you on?

I bought got mine a week ago Friday. Minute I connected to wifi, it went from 7.1 to 9 (usa, using straight talk, at&t sim)

Crazy. I'm on Koodo in Canada. They're a sub brand of Telus..

So an update on the update! I swapped the Koodo SIM out for a Rogers SIM, and BAMMM! Update arrived. All is good in update land now ?

Yea you can always just take out your SIM, reboot the phone and connect to wifi. It will then pull the update. Then just put the SIM back in...

I did that with the Koodo SIM, however didn't use the Rogers SIM until today..
Anywho, all good now!

I still haven't received the March update. The people at the AT&T Corporate store and AT&T customer service didn't even know there was an update that should have been available until I showed them. And then they just scratched their heads and gave the old can response of, "maybe it's being rolled out in stages?" I then asked, "Who can I talk to to find out when I will receive it?" and either they didn't know or they claimed to know...but people were not allowed to talk to them.
So, I'm guessing this update might come out around this time next year from AT&T.
I KNEW I should have bought a T-mobile device and just unlocked to use on AT&T since that's the carrier my family is on.....and yes, i'm still waiting on the March security update. Maybe i'll get that one in June and the April one in Dec. :/
There is no march patch.. there was an update released on march 18 but it still had february patches...

Regardless, the update changed the Baseband Version from APB5 to APC2. The MYAT&T app clearly shows that it should be available. My phone is still on the APB5 baseband and I can not get the update from any method. I have not received an OTA notification, manually checking for it shows me up to date, and Samsung switch tells me no update is available. So an update was released in March but me (and apparently others) can't get it. The only thing I haven't tried in the Samsung Experience at BestBuy.
This is the reason, I am thinking that (at least some people) probably won't see an update from AT&T like the one Tmobile just got for a long time.

AT&T Sim. Everything checks out with the phone and sim. I've talked to AT&T customer service on the phone and brought the phone into a local AT&T corporate retail store and both times they said the phone and account were fine. They also both claimed to not know about any updates until I showed / told them about it. Then, they just scratched their heads and gave me the old, "well...maybe it's just being rolled out in stages?" But neither could tell me who to contact to confirm if that was the case or not. Basically, they are clueless about their own products.

Nope... when you check for software updates.. the server checks for the sim before it issues the ota.. if we dont have the carrier sim it simply says your phone doesnt have any updates

I purchased my S7 at BestBuy about 2 weeks ago and the next day came back to Uruguay(South America). Then I saw online the March 18th update which also updated the baseband.
I tried to update it mannually but as it was mentioned it didn't work because the SIM is not from AT&T.
I have an AT&T SIM card that came with the phone but is not activated, do you think that placing that SIM card in the phone and trying the update will work?
Plane mode also?
I'm starting to get desperate on this phone because when I bought it I didn't know about this AT&T stupid policy about the updates.
Thanks.

Im in the same boat as you are.. i dont think we ll get any updates without at&t activated sim to receive the otas..
The only thing we can do is sideload the ota update from people who have already received the update..
But that means people with s7 edge on at&t should share the ota as soon as they download it without updating it... if they update the phone the phone deletes the update..

if you wanna sideload you'll need to unlock the bootloader. as far as I can tell, the galaxy s7 is locked tight!

correct me if i'm wrong, but I always thought ODIN was for flashing full rom images, not updates. At least when I used it was mostly factory default images that Samsung/ATT already released.

Why is the sammobile site not listing at&t version whereas even the tmobile recent firmware is also listed...
AT&T is one of the carriers notorious for not releasing firmware for developers to tinker with.

(Q) remove sim lock?

Has anyone been able to remove the sim lock on thier 6P? Ordered a code (which I'm getting my money back for) but it didn't work.
Any help? Based in the UK. Locked to EE have to wait for 6 months before EE would unlock it. Anyone know any other way?
Cheers

nexus is sim unlocked
EE ones are locked, mine was when I first got it. @OP, I looked into it for a couple of weeks then stumped up for a code, tried to do it through EE first and they said it wasn't one of their phones despite me having bought it from an EE shop, so I used the first one that came up on a Google search. Took a couple of days longer than expected, but worked perfectly.

Cheers mate, I've been down the same route. They said the same to me, reason being is that you have to have the phone for more than 6 months before they'll give you a code, in the meantime it'll simply fail.
That's why they say that it's not from them, because on searching for a code it appears that way.
Nice one though, I'll go back to EE and see what they say then I'll start on the net.

Figured out how to update (AT&T)-Cricket Users

I just successfully updated. Activate the att card that came with phone as go phone(dont add money just activate it.) Reboot, set date 2 days later, connect wifi and software update I am pretty sure the phone has to be registered on AT&T at least once. Its the same if you ever wanna network unlock it, you cant do that without activating it on ATT at least once. Even just a gophone card.

How to activate the sim?
I can confirm this works. Activate the SIM on ATT website. You do not need to enter any payment info. Thanks given @johnwayne27

ok i got it, i had to retry over and over again lol, i had to set the date to june. question can i use this same sim for the future? do i need to buy a new sim once it runs out?
I just went back to my cricket sim. If I need another I'll just hit up Walmart.
Thanks for this. My wife was lucky enough to get one of these free from Samsung for their insight program and we just moved to cricket.
I just borrowed a friend's SIM, updated and popped my cricket sim back in. Too much effort activating prepaid SIM just to update. Bought beer and wings to share while updating and called it a day
Can confirm updates ARE working with a Cricket sim installed. Just skip the date ahead manually a day or two if you you have checked recently and be connected to wifi.

Still on the April update here - checking always shows up to date
When registering your sim do you enter the IMEI of your s8 or can you use any unlocked phones IMEI?
I can't pull the update either. Registered the att sim, got a phone number and everything but nothing for the last few days. Still on April security

Put this in your phone: *#8736364#
Then go to Field Test mode.
Change Device Initiated date to one or a few minute ahead. wait until you see "SET" then press Home.
Wait until you see software update notification icon show up.

Invalid sim scam?

I purchased this phone through Craigslist. The guy stated it was unlocked so I thought great! Let's seal the deal. I popped my T-Mobile SIM in and like magic, it worked like a charm. Next day, invalid sim. I called Sprint, they said the phone is unlocked but no help. I called TMobile, they said it's not us it's Sprint. Popped the sim into my unlocked Pixel XL, boom! It worked. Popped it back into my Essential Phone and invalid sim, network locked. What gives? I call the guy back, straight to voicemail. I text him, it's been 10hrs nothing. Is it something going on with these phones that scammers are burning people with them?

I was on the same situation last week but mines network locked while I flashing firmwares to get T-Mobile wifi calling working the Sprint Essential Variant. I tried everything including flashing the Nougat builds and then Oreo builds and all kinds of combinations but no luck. I was lucky because the guy I bought it from was honest seller and called Sprint and Essential himself negate Sprint kept saying it was unlocked. He ended up giving me his old SIM card since he had called his service. I inserted into my phone and let it sit for an hour while connected to WiFi. I restarted my phone I was able to go to mobile settings and changed to Global and it's been unlocked since last Thursday.
If you go to the Sprint website and dig around you'll see the only way for Sprint to unlock an Android phone is to have a Sprint Sim in the phone. Maybe you can get a Sprint Sim card just so it can connect to the servers and get it unlocked.
Good Luck

It had his old number programmed into it but it didn't hey any service. Sprint's setup is different than T-Mobile because of the CDMA technology they use. It's not like T-Mobile that you just pop the Sim into another phone.
I honestly don't know if you can use any Sprint SIM card but you will definitely need one from my experience. The good news for you seems to be that it is most likely paid off if Sprint says it's unlocked.

After the first time it Sim locked the phone I was able to unlock it ONCE by fishing different builds but I was trying to get TMobile WiFi calling working so I kept flashing thinking it was going to stay unlocked after but sure enough it locked again and I after that I could not get it unlocked. I tried flashing so many firmwares and then updates through OTA download through the app and side loading. See if maybe you can order one online from Sprint or maybe on eBay.

I originally got it from eBay and just emailed the guy, hopefully he knows what to do. I was told by my carrier (Optus Australia) that they could do some shifty stuff with the OS to trick it to enable it then once an update happens it changes it back to locked. However don't think that is the case due to it being a wide spread case according to the people on twitter.

Gotcha!
Do you have a feeling that Sprint will fix this issue since it's widespread? I'm starting to think that Sprint was in on it. Or am I just an upset customer??? It's not happening to Sprint customers on there network, just people who are not on their network but have a Sprint variant. I have a strong feeling that Sprint locked us out of a unlocked phone intentionally. You?

I agree. This is crazy, months??? Still no software fix??? I'm starting to believe it's a network fix only. They need to officially make an open statement regarding the situation, on how to resolve the matter. I think it's time to beat down Sprints Twitter page for a resolution.

Victim of a Fraud from Ebay seller

I purchased Lg G6 unlocked t-mobile from ebay India on a half price of original "this is what I was patting my back with pride for" for a while though. Well, today I got a prompt on my phone screen that T-mobile temporary unlock period is expired, please reboot. I could smell the issue by now and as soon as I rebooted another message said "Network Lock". Now my sim does not have network signals. It is as good as a brick because I do not have t-mobile sim nor I think this phone was outright'ly purchased before it landed in my hands.
Looking for options:
1) does flashing custom rom (If available) release the network lock?
2) are there software available that can unlock without t-mobile sim?
3) are there paid unlock services available for foreign network?
4) any other that I am not aware of?
:crying::crying::crying:
For what price you purchased the mobile?

My friend has the same issue. Bought a second hand Tmobile G6 and the sim couldnt get any signal. After a while googling I found that IMEI of the device is blacklisted.
Now I wonder if rooting the device and changing the IMEI would help.
I can help you, text me on whatsapp @ +917022130177

No solution yet. Tried few options but all in vain. Now, what I have found out that, If I downgrade it to Nougat 11g, then I can get it unlocked. Though I am not able to find one post where there was a complete procedure looks like it was deleted by the OP.
are you in same situation as I am?
