Is there a way to make the v20 5G compatible? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Didn't know if it had the necessary Hardware and might be possible with a new SIM card.

No.

Lol

Thought I read somewhere that the V20 won't be exactly compatible with 5G, but will get a slight speed boost when in 5G markets. Thoughts?

The only way if you are still using v20 when 5g fully rolls out is when majority of lte users move onto 5g. Thereby freeing up bandwidth space for the now legacy lte for you to use so it will be faster.

Most insightful comment I have read in a while.
That is exactly what happened when they rolled out LTE. I stayed on HSPA+ and got great speeds because everyone else was jumping on the LTE bandwagon.
Once LTE was fully deployed, and you couldn't buy a phone anymore without LTE support, things were much better -- 120mbits average for the area I am in.
Once T-Mobile fully deploys band 71 (600Mhz) with 5g, then I will bite the bullet and buy the least sucky flagship phone that is available and supports it (I think I will have my V20s for many years yet )

This is mainly what I'm waiting on for a new phone. My next phone I would definitely want that band to have as future proofing but since I'm in a rather low populated part, I don't think I will be seeing this band on a tower in my area for quite a few years at least.

Thanks for the replies and information everybody. Hope you're all having an awesome weekend. Or soon-to-be weekend that is

It is not possible as the radio inside the phone would need to be changed. So 5g compatibility is something on the hardware level that needs to be available not something able to be turned on with software.
Unfortunately the v20 seems as if it will be the last phone to have removable battery everyone has since moved to the glass laminate design apple uses.

I am hoping that when 5G fully rolls out that a manufacturer releases one more smartphone with a removable battery. As long as the specs are ok, and by ok I mean a minimum of 4 GB of RAM and a 4K (or greater) display resolution and of course Micro SD card support then it would be up for my consideration.
I recently purchased a brand new LG V20 H918 (the Unlocked T-Mobile variant) phone. The very first purchase that I did was getting the PowerBear extended battery on Amazon, with the 2 day prime shipping that's what I got much sooner than the actual phone since the phone I also got it brand new but on Ebay since there it was significantly cheaper ($150) compared to any price I was seeing for a new phone for any variant on Amazon, you could only get a "renewed" (another way of Amazon saying "refurbished" I guess) for the same price I got my new phone on Ebay. (I guess the price inflation could be another way of Amazon getting back their 5% cash back they pay their Amazon Chase Visa card holders).
The V20 replaces my Samsung Galaxy S5 that also had an extended battery (the iPossible battery) and then it dropped onto a hard porcelain floor facing down, and while the screen didn't crack, it started zooming and unzooming erratically at random times and it would only reset back to normal if I power off the screen and turn it back on. Faced with having to purchase a new LCD screen and having to do the repair something that I know how to do since I have done it many times to other users I took the opportunity to search for a newer phone with a removable battery since I didn't have the time to dedicate to perform this repair with my super busy schedule, replacing an LCD screen off any smartphone is a tedious task, I just didn't wanted to bother this time. So after 3 days of hard research I finally discovered that the LG V20 is the latest smartphone to actually support a removable battery and then my next research turned on to determine what variant should I exactly go for: I had many options, I could have gone with Sprint's variant (the LS995) the Verizon's variant (VS995) or the T-Mobile's variant (H918). The Sprint's unlocked variant seemed very promising, being compatible with most networks here in the USA, except that it didn't support one of T-Mobile newer LTE Band 66 but other than that it supported every LTE band the Galaxy S5 supported and I guess it could have been a great compromise giving me the future option to go with Sprint or any of their MVNO's, except that when I checked if that phone was rootable I was dissapointed to hear that if my phone came with a certain firmware version or greater then it was unrootable and there has been more than 1 year without a method being discovered yet, um I need to be able to root, certain producttivity apps that I use depends on rooting, including the use of Titanium backup that allows me to import all of my Google Authenticator keys that aren't backed up in any other ways. Next to my list: the verizon's variant: it was a good choice except it didn't support all of Sprint's LTE bands which would mean a spotty Sprint coverage shall I go with Sprint in the future, and no Band 12 support for T-mobile either, that automatically was a no-go. At the end, I just went with the T-Mobile's unlocked variant and T-Mobile is my actual carrier too. In my area I used to get 25 Mbps speed test on my old Galaxy S5 phone that lacked Band 66 support, on this new phone with B66 support I got 100 Mbps. I got surprised when I saw that speed and I was only able to get that speed after I changed the Access Point Name from the default IPv6 only configuration into IPv4 only, under IPv6 I only got 35 Mbps don't exactly know why IPv4 outperformed IPv6 by a factor greater than 3 but those were my results here in the city of New York.
Overall, I am very happy with this phone. Its a super fast performing phone for a phone that was introduced in 2016 and by the looks of it, this phone can continue being relevant for many years to come.
Once again, I really hope to see another phone with removable battery being introduced somewhere in the future that actually supports 5G.

this is a fuzzy answer and not one many would tackle due to the efforts gained. the V20 series can NOT handle the data (think volume) rates of 5G , BUT...
i have no doubts the physical device would work on a 5G network. 5G is a VERY short wave, but the V20 is unique because the antennas are easy access with room to spare. ( top/bottom cases)
so with time , a 30,000.00$ -S2-test set- network analyzer, YES its quite simple. but no matter what is done, the core of the device is only capable of the original design for MAX 4G speeds (100-300megs/sec?) PLUS i cant say how the device would hold up to the MAX rates 100% of the time. would be a cool experiment, but this is far out for a 2016 spec phone. T-mobile network would be the best bet for easy tune, but again, how will hardware handle
i wouldn't know where to start for the software side, but tuning an antenna isn't too bad.

Speeds are often be more down to what your network provider is capable of giving you rather than your fones capability.
3G working at full speed as advertised can be absolutely fine for streaming video.
4G+ is more than good enough for me, not all the time but most of the time. Don't care less I don't have 5g on my V20, my fave fone ever.

No, as that would require changes on the SoC level and I don't think any of us have the hardware or qualifications to do stuff like that.

Hey US users: Who's thinking of switching to a carrier version?

I'm looking at going with the larger screen T-Mobile mo to mo. First device on their high speed network. We'll have to look closely at the action of Qualcomm during the first 30 days.
Never. I've tasted freedom and won't go back. Not having to live with carrier hardware and software changes and being dependent on them for updates is a joy. For $10 a month I have unlimited fake-4G data and free tethering. When it's time to replace the SGS2 it will be with another carrier-unmolested phone. I just bought a 10.1 Tab and got if from the UK so I don't have to deal with all of the U.S. "customization." And T-Mobile sucks - I dumped them when I dumped my piece of crap G2X. Good luck if you have a problem with your phone. Their idea of overnight replacement takes 3-5 days. And every agent tells you something different - some are extremely competent the majority are idiots reading from a script. AT&T will have to dispose of some assets but there's no doubt the merger will go through. T-Mobile's lost 1MM post-paid subscribers so for this year. Then you're shiny new AWS banded phone will make a great paperweight once AT&T starts using the bands for LTE.

I'm in complete agreement with you about the 'carrier' freedom. The only thing that really perturbs me is the reports of phone tweaking (example: how the ATT infuse 4g will get higher data speeds than the sgs ii with them sitting side by side) and if that pattern holds true I'd suspect that the American bastard step-child SGS II will out perform its untainted euro cousin.
I'm rather forced to use the upcoming T-mobile USA release due the band frequencies as the current International model is not compatible with 1700 / 2100

Agreed. I'm even running on the "4g" phone apn. On AT&T OLAM, its recognized as Medianet.
I will get the version att has if it's the sgs2 internals with the physical keyboard.

The problem there is that if the reports about the hardware specs are true, it won't really be a true sgs2.
Qualcomm instead of exynos? that would make it a pos disguised as an sgs2.

Wait, when did TMO get a high speed network I've realized the best devices I've owned have all been unmolested by any US carrier. Last device I really loved before the SGS2 was the Nexus One. So I really can't see myself giving up my unbranded international version. Case in point is the transition to the Qualcomm processor. If it's anything like the performance I get with my Sensation, that's a big step down from the exynos. I'll be more than happy holding on to my SGS2 until something like the Nexus 3 or SGS3 drops

CAn you say how is the battery life??...is it really 2500 mah or some fake??
And how is the camera? Is it really 8mp or 5mp one?
the battery is soso, some times it can last one and half day, but you must charge it every day, when i play games or watch video from youtube, cant last one day, maybe 7-8 hours.
the camera is good as geekbuying shows, it is clear and sensitive.
Just wondering has anyone tried this phone in North America? It says it supports WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz so technically 3G should work in North America. Just want to confirm before ordering.

Mini-Review from an AT&T user in the US:
I bought one of these for my wife (I figured it was a good trade --- Just kidding.) I don't feel like committing to AT&T for another 2 years.
I bought it from Geekbuying.com. It arrived in only a few days.
It seemed to have the best specs, and the correct frequencies for AT&T in the US. For these types of phones, the dual core MTK6577 SoC is actually not a bad chip.
I can confirm that it does report an "H" connection (HSDPA) almost everyplace an AT&T signal is available.
My Acer Iconia Smart (HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100 non-US version) Rarely connects as 3G since it does not have 850 HSDPA.
She only uses the 1 SIM. I have a T-Mobile SIM/Account I use for testing, but since it is her phone, I have not tested it on T-Mobile. T-Mobile 3G may actually work, at least in some areas, since as part of the failed takeover of T-Mobile by AT&T, they have a 7 year frequency-sharing agreement. With Quad Band GSM/GPRS, Calls, and 2G data will work fine on T-Mobile.
Performance is also good. Switching Apps, scrolling on the browser, returning to home screen all happen without any irritating delays.
It is a very clean and stable version of Android 4.1.1. Google Play is present, but see below for a problem. Force closes are rare to never.
The screen is beautiful for a Chinese phone. Overall the phone also looks very nice for the price (I bought her the white one.)
Call quality, Mobile signal, and WiFi are also all excellent. -- No compromise as compared with a name-brand phone.
Battery life is also good. Runs fine for a whole day, and with some effort to do battery management, (WiFi on only when needed, BT off, Conservative Brightness and Screen time-out settings) it will go a second day if she forgets to charge it.
But I do have some complaints:
The back, and the way it attaches to the phone is very cheap. I am not sure how many times you can take the back off without it breaking.
It's not bad to hold and use, but I'm pretty sure one good drop will kill it. Of course, 1 drop can kill even a name-brand phone.
It seems to only have one microphone. Most newer "real" phones have 2 or even 3 mics for noise cancelling or for use in different orientations (like using Voice search, or using it in speaker phone mode). This would only be a problem in noisy environments.
Edit: I had previously written something about filesystem corruption. That gave an incorrect perception of a minor problem.
My wife had a problem installing a paid app from Google Play. I believe I could fix the problem, but that would require a factory reset or user data wipe, or rooting. The problem seems limited to the installation of that one app. Other apps install fine.

This phone will not work on T-Mobile it only has 3G 850/2100 like all the other China mtk6577 devices do not buy if you're expecting it to work on T-Mobile 3G! The specs are false saying it supports 3G bands 850/1900/2100!
That's what I'd say too. The specs are good and price is ok for the specs but not exactly a deal.

N7100 or &105 or T-889?

Hi,
Had bought a T-mobile Note 2 that I got unlocked and was using on AT&T. That was all of 3 weeks ago, and over thanksgiving, dropped the damn phone and shattered the screen - the damaged phone is on Craiglist btw, goto Houston craigs and search "Broken Screen, otherwise working Galaxy Note".
In the market for a new one now - pending the sale of the damaged one obviously.
There are 2 many versions out there and ALL the searching I've done has left me even more confused.
There are 2 international versions - 7100 and 7105. In the US, there are carrier specific versions.
If you don't care about LTE, then apparently, the T-Mobile version was better even for use on AT&T - which is what I did, and was quite happy with the internet speeds on wap.cingular APN.
The one downside of the US specific versions is that they appear to lack the Wireless Charging pins (atleast the T-Mobile version doesn't seem to allow wireless charging).
If I were to go for an international unlocked version, would it be restricted to 2g speeds (like Iphone 4s would be limited to EDGE on T-Mobile) on AT&T?.. or, would it get decent HSPA+ atleast?.
Not too fussed about LTE - I use the phone for... emails...web surfing, occasional YouTube for the kids, so blazing fast internet is not a must, reasonable speeds are all I ask for.
So, simple questions really...1) US AT&T or US T-Mobile... or N7100 or N7105
2) Would either of the international versions get atleast HSPA+?
Again, I did read all the threads and left confused - hence this post.
Thanks for any help.

I have the international GT-N7100 version and am using it on AT&T until my contract expires in February 2013. You get with them the HSPA+ speed, not the LTE of course. I am going to eventually drop them just like they drop my call now...
In March 2013 my plan is to go with a prepaid service which uses T-Mobile network. By than T-Mobile will (hopefully) their 1900 spectrum active everywhere, which means that I should be getting a very good HSPA+ speed.
P.S. - That phone is available now from newegg.com for $600 till 11/27, but there are ongoing sales in that price range.
Thanks Reuven.
I managed to get rid of the broken Note 2 on craigs for 380$ within an hour or posting the ad... I'm wondering if maybe there is a very easy way to replace the screen... I got about 5 calls in the hour...
Went ahead and ordered the white one from NewEgg... 599 delivered is a pretty good deal.... (the 599 deal on the white ones is available till 11/27).

If you don't mind, you can "thank" me by clicking on the "Thanks" button.
The 7100 will get HSPA+ on AT&T (3G) because they operate HSPA+ on 1900 MHz.
You will only get 2G on TMO, because their HSPA+ is on 1700 MHz, which is not supported by the note 2.
TMO is slowly moving their HSPA+ service to 1900 MHz, which IS supported by the note 2, but the move will take until middle of 2013. (This is the reason why AT&T iPhones going to TMO network never got 3G, it was on the wrong band for those phones. One day those apple folks will be really happy when the switch is made, because they will suddenly get 3G service.)
You won't get TMO's "4G" 42mbit service even when the 1900 MHz switch is complete because the radio in the note 2 doesn't support it. 21 is as fast as it goes.
Overseas, the most popular bands for 3G are 900 MHz and 2100 MHz, both of which the 7100 supports.
I wouldn't waste time with the 7105. LTE is not widely used in europe, and when it is, it is very expensive.
Hope this helps! I just bought a 7100 in preparation for travel/relocation to London, so I did a fair bit of research.

Thanks Reuven.
I managed to get rid of the broken Note 2 on craigs for 380$ within an hour or posting the ad... I'm wondering if maybe there is a very easy way to replace the screen... I got about 5 calls in the hour...

I think i read somewhere that if your LCD is broken the whole part needs replacing costing $200 ish
But if just the front glass then its very cheap at about $20 although skill/familiarity is needed to make a successful repair.

The skill thats needed is beyond most of us - I asked one of these kiosk phone fix-it guys in a mall and he said the LCD and the external glass are glued together and even to replace just the glass he would replace the whole assembly as the use of a heat gun etc isn't that easy.
His estimate was: 250 or so for the LCD+Glass assembly, 30-40 bucks for his fixing charges.
I thought it better to recoup some money by selling the broken phone and getting a new one.

Yes, i would've done the same as you, people will pay as much sometimes for things needing repair because they are either stupid or want a challenge.
But you expressed surprise at the speed your phone sold & for the sake of others reading this i felt it may be worth pointing out the huge price difference between the two scenarios.
Glass like ebay item 170939616778 & others with a little device for getting it Unglued are on eBay & instructions for fitting are plentiful on You Tube.
Yes, all Repairers tend to advise a complete assembly simply because its really quick & easy to get right & most importantly some charge the $250 & then just fit a new glass

Some of the ebay listings for the outer glass came with big bold warnings stating chaging the glass is not a simple job etc etc, I don't mind getting my hands dirty to do a bit of tinkering, but, with the warnings, I thought best not to bother. About a year ago, I was in Pakistan, and there, ANYTHING can be fixed - these guys in the small shops in the electic market are magicians, I had a Galaxy S2 at that time and the screen was a bit scratched - I inquired at quite a few shops, and they all said, they can do it, but its fraught, and if its only some scratches, then I should just live with it.
Nevertheless, the speed with which the damaged phone sold makes me wonder maybe the Note ii isn't THAT difficult to repair.

I'm actually not at all bothered with LTE - decent 3G speeds are more than enough for what I use the phone for. I'm not going to be using it for dowmloading ISOs etc, so, yeah, even if its restricted to 21mbps HSPA, that theoretical rate is still 4 times the DSL rate I used to get in Scotland and was enough for me. My stay in the US is limited anyway; so, a US specific LTE device would be kind of lost on me anyway.
If you're in London, see if you can get Virgin cable broadband - UK DSL, even with ADSL2+ is mostly sucky.
Riz,
I agree, 21mbps is going to be plenty fast enough for me. Thanks for the heads up on Virgin cable! I'll have to see what availibility is in the area that I'm going to be.

Feeling about the 6t on Verizon?

Can someone clarify is there is 3G coverage on Verizon? Also, what do people think about the much slower 19Mb vs normal 55Mb speeds the pixel gets? Do you think whatever may be causing the slower speed could also impact coverage area? I went from pretty hyped to pretty skeptical after reading the xda article covering Verizon use. If this worked flawlessy on Verizon it'd be a no brainier purchase but it seems like it won't.
The version Oneplus is offering directly has every band capable of covering each carrier.

The 6T will cover all LTE bands needed to work on Verizon and it has been certified by Verizon to work as a bring your own device.. It does not have the CDMA bands for Verizon 3g service. A few reviews mention no issues with Verizon service.

According to the Oneplus 6T spec page on the Oneplus website it does indeed have CDMA bands 0 and 1. It should work with legacy 3G Verizon coverage. This doesn't mean it does, but it should be able to...

Thanks for all of the replies but nobody has touched on xda's report of it getting 19Mb down on Verizon when the pixel got 55Mb down and the same op6t got 78down on T-Mobile. Is that not a cause for concern? Maybe I should wait for more in depth reviews?
I guess I'll find out next week when mine arrives! Been waiting for these phones to be compatible with Verizon so jumped right on ordering one.

I believe that list only shows the LTE bands supported. Maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't it also list out the regular GSM bands supported for AT&T/T-Mobile if it included legacy connections (3G, etc)? I guess once more Verizon people have the phone and test we'll find out.
I ordered one this morning at 9 am to try. They have a 15 day return policy so if it only gets one band or signal sucks or something I will just return and call it a wash!

I am in to see reviews for this phone through Verizon as well.. I am either going to get the OnePlus 6T or the Google Pixel 3. I was really excited that the OnePlus 6T would work on Verizon. But, as the OP mentioned. My excitement got dampened by the confusion if 3G will work on the OnePlus (as also mentioned OnePlus website shows bands 0 and 1 are on the phone but people are mentioning that 3G will not work) and the XDA article about much slower download speeds on Verizon with the OnePlus.
Very interested to hear hand on reviews with this phone through the Verizon network.
Ordered for Verizon so we'll see. No need for CDMA here.

Same as many others. Currently, waiting to see reviews on how the OP6T works on VZW.

I was extremely excited about the pixel 3 non-xl even though the bezels are larger than almost every $800+ phone released in 2018. I forgave that as stereo speakers can be nice. Then they put the nail in the coffin by only having 4GB of RAM. I have had app refresh issues on every 4GB phone I've owned (every Android phone actually and have been using them since the OG Droid). This year was looking promising with phones having 6 and 8GB. When I heard the pixel was only going to be 4 I seriously considered buying an iPhone. I'm honestly very upset. It should be pixel 3 non-xl: 128GB with 6GB for $800 and 256 with 8GB for $900. They could even have gone $900 & $1000 or $1000 & 1100 and I would've bought one. 4GB is a deal breaker unless it was more like $500 or 600. Then I could justify buying one and just upgrading the second something better comes out.
The size of the 6t is my only downside. Love the small bezels but wish is were a 5.8-6" screen with the same resolution and bezels. Have to shrink the battery a bit too obviously.
The 6T does have CDMA. Wheter or not it works with VZW is another question.
I will know how it works with Verizon on Monday. It Shipped today with delivery of 11/5.
Ordered for Verizon today.
We'll see how it works.
I'm not that worried it should work as good as the Essential that I'm going to replace.
Ordered mine on 11/1. Should be here Tuesday but I’m hoping Monday. I think I’m more concerned about the few things I’ve read about no VoWiFi which I use a good bit during holidays with my wife’s family in the sticks.
Real world users of the 6T on Verizon are getting network speeds in the 30s and 40s, which is fine for me.
I've never done better than that on Samsung nor LG phones.

What 5G carrier in the US

So doing a little digging in on the OnePlus website and noticed that the 5G bands of the OnePlus 8 series are
CarrierSupport Band (LTE)Support Band. (NR)
AT&T 2/4/66/5/12/17/29/30/46/48 n/a
Sprint 25/26/41 n/a
T-Mobile 2/4/66/5/12/46/48/71 N41/N71
VzW 2/4/66/5/13/46/48 n/a
U.S. Cellular 2/4/5/12/17/71 n/a
So does this mean OnePlus is only supporting T-Mobile 5G bands (NR) and if so this phone can barely be considered to be "all in on 5G"

I am hoping it works best on TMo, as I have one of theirs and I would think this one will be more flexible with updates and development.

They said the Verizon version supports Verizon 5G as well.
According to this article, https://www.androidcentral.com/oneplus-8-and-oneplus-8-pro-5g-carriers-explained, ONLY the OnePlus 8 purchased directly from Verizon will work on 5g. That was enough to sour me on buying this phone. First, I wanted the Pro. Second, I refuse to buy locked down crap directly from Verizon.
5G is a joke, especially the short wave, by the time 5G becomes relevant, 2020 phones will be obsolete and network speeds are overhyped to begin with. A desktop or a decent laptop on a 100 Mbps connection crushes tablets and smartphone on much faster connections. Even if one bends over backwards to make up legit reasons to download huge files onto smartphones, as soon as those large files have to be processed, laptops and desktops crush it again. Any technology that requires you to be outdoors and hold your phones in a specific way to improve your chance of approaching advertised network speeds should not be a factor in a purchasing decision.

Exactly. I want my phone to be able to do phone-level network business quickly. I don't expect it do to laptop/desktop things as quickly.

It is my understanding that the ones not bought from Verizon will work on 5g, but not theirs. Plus their version is a watered down 8.
I also don't really want their high frequency 5G unless it pairs out with slower frequencies, as it can be disconnected with your hand. Have you noticed all there 5G commercials are outside ?
