bootloop after flashing stock ROM - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Got stuck somewhere while installing TWRP on my Moto G5 plus, but I couldn't. So tried to flash the Stock rom for Moto G5 plus-XT 1686 NPN25.137-35.
I had installed the NPN25.137-35_recovery.img Android recovery.
Tried using fastboot for installing stock rom:
1st - POTTER_AMZ_NPN25.137-35_cid18_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
2nd - POTTER_NPN25.137-35_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
In both cases, after the last step of reboot, the bootloader warning screen appears for about 10-15 seconds, then again the same, and then Erasing and the circle appears and this cycle goes on repeat.
Please suggest me how do I install the ROM and get my phone alive again.
P.S. Please be kind enough and explain in easy terms because this is the first time I tried to do all these things.

Some information would be helpful. Have you been on any custom ROM and if yes which one?
Are you sure the mentioned firmware is the correct one?
Is your bootloader unlocked?
Is or was your device rooted with magisk or SuperSU?

Followed instructions and now phone will not boot

Hello everyone,
As my heard all sort of good things about using a custom ROM for my S5, i decided to give it a try.
I initially rooted my phone and was using supersu and debloater to fiddle with stuff but think its different from using a custom rom
so i went and followed the instructions on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52210611&postcount=4
my phone when i checked was a G900F international qualcomm model but after following the instructions precisely, my phone when it reached this stage "Your phone reboots automatically after flashing." does not boot up and hangs and the boot screen.
What should i do?

Wi-Fi mac address error after unlocking boot loader + root

I followed some tutorial in this site https://goo.gl/fz0bIx and now i can't fix the wi-fi mac address (appears as 02:00:00:00:00) and it can't find the wifi networks
Can anyone help me?
Please tell what you have flashed

I followed the tutorial and flashed this: https://dl.twrp.me/athene
followed the next steps on the tutorial and flashed this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3TKzy1UugHNT1RvNURsWmRoMVk/view
and then installed the supersu as described there: https://download.chainfire.eu/751/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.62-3-20151211162651.zip
The wifi does not work (gives me the strange address) and i don't know if this is related to a corrupted /persist partition. The wifi folder inside it has no files.
----
I think the issue may be related to this (not sure tho): the ROOT files are for "athena 1641/1643" model. I have "athene 1626" model.
If it is related to the files i pointed above, how do i fix it? Is Returning to stock rom the right way?
----
DTV module is faulty too. Probably the thing i flashed corrupted it too.
I have the same problem!
May I make the claim that there's no working root available for Moto G4? I had this problem as well.
I jumped from Moto G1 to Moto G4 a couple of weeks ago. I tried to root it immediately after I received my device. I came across with several posts talking about the rooting process. By following those instructions, I got a clean backup after installing TWRP and before doing anything else. Then I tried to install SuperSU for a couple of times with different versions from 2.36 to the latest one 2.74 - NONE of them worked. It left you a non-bootable Moto G4. it stopped at the Moto logo - no animation of changing to Lenovo logo. I have to restore my phone over and over again.
Suddenly, I found the one posted above and flashed the modified boot.img. It can boot the device. However, before I tried to check if the root was successful or not, I noticed the wifi problem. Then I realised that the modified boot.img might be ONLY suitable for Moto G4 Plus (I don't know if it really works, I have not G4 Plus to test - it's just a guess!). So I make a full restore and get the wifi working now.
That's my attempts on rooting Moto G4 till now. If anyone has a working root, please tell us the process.

I did not make a backup (stupid, i know). I'm trying to find a rom that works but had no success. The one i've found is giving me an error in twrp. I just want to get it back to original :/

Try to search in this page: wwwDOTfilefactoryDOTcom/folder/c6cdedc45a775d27/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100
Remember that our Moto g4 is XT1622. there're some on that page. I did download them in case something went wrong while rooting. but i never flash them - thanks to the backup. There's one said XT1622 specifically in the file name but it also said TESCO. I'm not sure if it's for TESCO network only or not - better to try. Someone mentioned that the file 'XT1621-XT1622-XT1642_ATHENE_MPJ24.139-23.4_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip' contains the XT1622 image and thought to be correct as it appears in the file name. I also tried 'mfastboot.exe getvar all' before the modification. The saved txt file from that command has the same version information: Athene 6.0.1, MPJ24.139-23.4.
Anyway, try to get the stock rom and flash it. Reboot to see if the wifi worked. If so, fastboot and flash TWRP and that's it - do not proceed any further. For the time being, we have to be patient for a working root method on Moto G4. I just cannot understand why people are writing some 'INSTRUCTION' they don't know if it worked or not.

I'll search this site. My phone box says XT1626 (Brasil version with DTV)
Update:
Flashed the 1626 version from the site using mfastboot and this sequence: This Post
Now it seems to be working fine (gotta test DTV. It found the channels but my signal is bad so...)
WIFI is alive and well ^^

Just flashed the entire XT1626 firmware using the sequence i posted above. No issues at all. Phone working completely fine
Help!
I have the same Issue, my MAC-Adress shows some bull***t and my WiFi wont show anything. I already tried to flash two different XT-1622 ROM's but it did NOT help me at all. I now will also try to flash the XT-1626 ROM, hoping that it will somehow fix my device. If anyone who sees this has an idea how to fix this or encountered the same problem and already fixed it, please notify me.
Thank you.
EDIT:
Turns out, that I am the biggest retard and not worth living on this world anymore.
I always executed the different ROM-Flashes by using the default batch-file given by the "how to reset" post creater... But instead of putting it in the core directory of the extracted zip i just put it in the mfastboot folder. Ofcourse, it executed very fast, i couldnt read the error codes, but my device always just resetted itself, and restarted. I thought it already was a new rom flashed, but it actually was the same over and over again. Now i found out, flashed one xt-1622 rom and its back up, working
God I feel stupid now.

I cant actually look at the box, because I dont know where it is right now. I am actually pretty sure it was an XT-1622.
There is a tag on the phone's battery. Model is in there too. What country are you?
or you can use the command I posted above: mfastboot.exe getvar all
there's a line said something like: (bootloader) sku: XT1622
that's the model. it's better to make backup and record as many information as possible before doing any modifications.
Hi, i have same problem. Please, can you tell me any way around not installing stock rom again or another custom rom to see if it has wifi fixed or if all fails, install stock rom
Please any way to fix the wifi problem?

Where do you see this bogus address?
I;ve unlocked and rooted 2 Moto G4 XT1625 phones that show this bogus address in a wifi widget I use on my home screen. I don;t seem to have a problem connecting to wifi. When I go to Settings about phone status I see the correct address
I used to see it on the advance settings in wifi.. however, I like Android so I play alot with it if you ever get any problem make sure you have a stock mpj or npj Rom with fastboot flash compatibility. And flash all the. Image sparse chunk :good:
After updating to Nougat, the bogus 02:00:00:00:00:00 address still displays on my wifi widget but displayed correctly in settings. No problem getting connected to wifi networks.

SOS - OneClick Brick

Greetings,
I need some help. I purchased OneClickRoot for my Verizon S5. Everything went swimmingly right up until it didn't. I got root after several hours with the oneclick tech team. he gave me instructions on how to flash a ROM, but left out the apparently important step where I should have skipped the signature verification. So I had SafeStrap, wiped everything and tried to flash an unsigned ROM. now the phone is dead wit no OS and seemingly no ability to get back to safestrap. Should I just toss this phone in the rubbish and buy a new one or can it be saved? When I boot to recovery, it is Android recovery and it keeps failing on the verification.
All advice is welcome.

I'm unfamiliar with Verizon variants, but have you tried using Odin to flash the original stock?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
Sent from my Samsung SM-G900I using XDA Labs
Yea dude as long as you can get into download mode (or Odin mode whatever you feel like calling it) you're fine just flash whatever version you feel like being on and I would follow these instructions for root and ROMs and possible bootloader unlock since it's Verizon https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve.../testers-required-easier-root-method-t3561529
So Close!!
Thanks for the help. I followed this guide ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve.../testers-required-easier-root-method-t3561529) and got it back; ...sort-of.
In Step 13, I used the 6.0 firmware.
In Step 14 I used the "latest stock rooted Lollipop Rom" that was recommended.
I have what appears to be a rooted 5.0 factory rom installed. However, when booting, I get process stopped errors for the first 2 minutes. Maybe 15 or 20 of them. After that, they stop.
Current Problems:
1) the radios are dead. Wi-Fi will not turn on and it does not know that my SIM card is installed
2) when the screen times-out I have to pull the battery to get it back.
3) All the error messages (android.process.media)
4) It does not see the SD card
Questions:
A) Can you help me fix the radio problems?
B) Once I get the radios working again, can I flash any G900V ROM with safestrap and it will likely solve 2, 3 &4?
C) Are the custom roms on 6.0 and higher rooted? I was looking at this one (https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-cosmic-os-3-1-t3553838)
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Idk if i can help bt i can try haha Well first thing first it sounds like you used marshmallow firmware but then flashed a lollipop ROM which yes it will boot up bt stuff like your radio and GPS, etc won't work so first thing is first i would say is do a complete wipe and get your self back to stock through Odin and get everything working first before worrying about ROMs then I have to ask is what is what is your emmc are you 15 (bootloader unlock and can easily root 6.0.1 or higher) or emmc 11 (can only root 5.0)

OK, this is a loooong story. Can someone save my xperiac4?PLS...........

I have a xperia c4 e5303, is a awesome device and 5-6 days ago i wanted to use xposed firmware to enable a fake gyroscope.
AND THE HELL STARTED.
I had the device rooted with custom recovery twrp when i was in lollipop 5.1, i installed the firmware for xposed and the phone was stucked in "android optimization", for hours. I restarded it sometimes but nothing, so i formatted my device and when i rebooted it, i was stucked in "sony" logo screen, some minutes ago i founded that my phone was totally empty.
c: *internal screaming*
I waited the next day, i downloaded the ftf of original marshmallow 6.0 firmware for sony xperia c4 and i installed it on my device, then everything worked perfectly luckely.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy, or not?
Some hours after i founded that i couldn't use the recovery mode!
I searched and searched and i founded that the problem could be the bootloader,so i used a sony official guide to unlock that.
I couldn't finished that guide becouse with any connection, on any computer, android sdk can't install his components(such as google usb driver, that are required for that method), and the program just install everytime the same package in loop. I tried aaaallll the method in the universe for that, i tried also to install once per once the zip files of the downloaded package but it was totally useless.
So i founded another method after some days of searching (with flashtool) and now my bootloader is fully unlocked, if i use flashtool to unlock the bootloader, it says that is unlocked and ask me if i want to relock it so i think now the bootloader unlock is done. FINALLY.
Then, i turned off the phone and started it by pressing the volume down+power botton, and all the device did was reboot himself repitetly until i release hard keys and when i do it the phone start automatically.
I think my device now reboot himself instead of going in recovery mode.
What can i do i am totally frustrated about this and i really don't want to buy a new device becouse i don't have a gyroscope. I love my xperia c4, i just don't know why i can't get the recovery mode back to install twrp, for rooting the device, for retry to get xposed virtual sensor and then finally enjoy my vr experience...
In the end, i have a Xperia C4 5303 with original Marshmallow 6.0 firmware installed, that can't go in recovery mode in any ways.
Pls someone help me..
no one?..
No one here know hot to save my smartphone?
update: now i can use fasboot and adb commands becouse i installed the drivers properly.
but i still can't flash a custom recovery to get the root..

Digging through XDA (next time use the website's search bar, tee hee hee) I found this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp.../bootloader-unlocked-custom-recovery-t3285521
Edit: I know it says C5 Ultra whatever but the thread says it also works with your model (C4 E5303 no?)
Before trying anything, I'd seriously recommend reading all eleven pages so you don't miss anything and end killing your phone (or back at square 1).
I'm not an expert on Android or anything (I personally have only owned 1 device — a first gen Moto G), but the method presented in the thread is very odd. Are all Xperia phones this weird?
Read carefully — some steps might be unnecessary (after all, you already unlocked your bootloader [maybe?])
P.S. you lost the recovery because by installing the original firmware it basically got erased (original firmware didn't have TWRP after all!)
P.S.S. you should create a backup once you get TWRP up and running, just in case.
I can't help you more than this because I do not own the device, so I cannot share ~personal wisdom~ with you (beyond recommending the Moto G series).
Good luck!
( And search the forums and threads before posting — that's an XDA rule! )

Thanks a lot for your time, but i am using that thread to root this, and i am stucked at the last point becouse i don't know what he means with:
"THIS IS IMPORTANT
The rom has
Code:
recovery.from.boot.p"
I did all the steps except for that, and i get no errors but when i try to boot in recovery the phone just stay on the logo and then after some minutes reboot himself and starts normally.
i already ask what the last point is in that thread
p.s.: i know i will not have twrp if i reinstall stock fw, but the point is that i don't have also the normal recovery, i can't access to that via adb or via hard keys..

Ah. You should've mentioned it (i.e. linked to the guide). Sorry sorry!
Read further down. The "recovery.from.boot.p" is this thing that overwrites TWRP with the stock recovery. Following the «THIS IS IMPORTANT» indication are instructions to get rid of the thing, and so being able to keep TWRP permanently.
You need that last step to succeed.

Is fine, i had to buy another phone that is why is tarted to root the xperia.
just..i'm out from the world of rooting i think. i broke 2 devices 1 by flashing a original rom with sony original flashtool and 1 by installing a root with kigroot, and now on that i can't read the sim.
i wait until the world of rooting will be more stable and with more official custom roms...

Lost Soft Nav Icon/Buttons after flashing

First thank you for reading. I'm a newbie and need help. I have a Moto G5 Plus XT1687. I lost the soft navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen after flashing Viper-cedric-20171018-Coral-v3.1.1-Final-N.zip. I had made a backup using TWRP and restored. However, the soft buttons are still missing. I've gone through all the settings and made sure the one button nav was turned off.
This is my first attempt at flashing. It's been quite a journey. I first DL adb fastboot and tried to flash TWRP. Kept getting fails. Then all of sudden it worked. I followed the directions to wipe the device and wound up resetting the phone. I finally got TWRP 3.2.2.3 to load and installed Magisk SuperSU and rooted (checked it with a root checker). I did a backup using TWRP and Titanium Bkup (of my apps). I then installed Viper-cedric-20171018-Coral-v3.1.1-Final-N.zip. That's when the soft buttons disappeared. Finally after many tries I was able to get the correct gapps installed thinking it might help. It didn't. So I did a restore back to the stock ROM. It didn't help. If anyone has any ideas I would surely appreciate the help. If anyone has any thoughts on another ROM I also appreciate your input. Thanks. BTW I forgot to say I did unlock the bootloader using the Moto web site.

First of all the ROM you mentioned is called Viper-cedric and your device is a Moto G5 Plus which is called potter. Cedric is as far as I know the name of the Moto G5 so you flashed the wrong ROM. This is a really bad fault and you can be thankful that you didn't hardbrick your device. First rule in flashing custom ROMs: Check if it's for your device.
About your problem with the missing soft keys: I think it's related to the Moto actions, in this case the one handed mode. Have you tried to toggle this feature on and off? Are you able to use the fingerprint sensor for home, back and recents?
Btw, the latest official TWRP is 3.2.2.0 so the you maybe used a unofficial recovery?

Hi Wolfcity. I apologize for the incorrect info. I installed Viper-potter-20171017-Coral-v3.1.1-Final-N.zip, not cedric. I wound up resetting the phone last night and reinstalled TWRP this morning. I installed the latest ver. 3.2.3.0. I then reinstalled Viper and gapps pico. This time it all went smoothly. I did find the navigation bar toggle. It is under settings>venom>system>navigation bar and hardware keys>enable navigation bar.
I do have one more question. I flashed viper on the Moto because I have VieperOne on my HTC One M9 and love it. Since I've now found out Viper OS is NOT ViperOne, is there any advantage to installing a different ROM? Or do I just play with various ROMs until I find something I like? Thanks for reply.

Ok, nice to hear it's working. And you're right, you have to find out if any custom ROM is fitting your needs and which one does.
Different devices have ROMs from different developers/maintainers and just because a ROM is running nice on a Sammy or LG it hasn't to be good on a Moto device for example.
Best thing is to check the threads in the ROM section, there are several custom ROMs for the Moto G5+. There is one thing to be careful with:
If you flash any 64bit Oreo ROM and try to return to stock there's a high risk to lose your IMEI and/or voLTE/4G. You'll have to make a backup of your stock persist file before to restore it afterwards.
That can be done with a unofficial TWRP or by terminal command. Further information:

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure what the phone had. I did look up the specs to learn it was an ARM not an ARM64
