[Request] KitKat GSI - Treble-Enabled Device Guides, News, & Discussion

Android KitKat was a pretty hecking good android version and it's such a distant memory. Someone should make a GSI of android KitKat to get nostalgia on times when we weren't depressed bois looking at memes. Tell me you didn't like the little house in the navigation bar and the light grey tone of the settings menu.

Run it in a VM

Treble is supported since Android 8.0. We cant make a GSI of android versions lower than 8.0

Useless thread.

Maybe, but a KitKat theme and icon set would be eminently do-able.

I actually did some testing of Trying to boot an android image in a VM, Ive tried an x86 cm14 image in limbo_x86, got to the bootloader then nothing, I've got limbo (non x86) installed, but just need to find an arm android image to see if it will boot, if anyone has a link to one, it can't be a GSI though, needs to be a bootable iso

You cant run an android version which is older as the android version as the device was released.

You actually can. I managed to successfully boot 7.0 on a phone that was running 7.1 out of the box ?. Or even lollipop on MM device although everything was constantly crashing.
But booting KitKat on Oreo device etc. Not gonna happen. We would need probably a lot of kernel changes and new vendor made specifically for KitKat.
And don't forget that only Oreo has GSI support. Adding it to KitKat would require millions of lines of code changes. And even if some Dev wanted to do that.. he wouldn't be able to do it by himself.
There are more reasons why it won't happen but yeah.
I'd love to see it too and sometimes I work on porting some older apps to newest Android versions. If You PM me on Telegram, I can send You Android Donut (I think) Settings app that works (60-70%) even on Android P
I could even probably release a hybrid rom that would contain most Android 1.x apps and it would be based on Phh rom so that it would work on most devices. But there would be things that would most likely never work.
Those are:
System UI
Settings would be kinda broken.
And lots of other bugs that would annoy an average user.
What should work:
Settings(basic functionality + UI)
1.x Apps like camera, calendar, calculator, browser etc
Ringtones
Wallpaper
Maybe launcher
Themed Status bar and navigation bar with some old icons
Maybe system in general could be themed slightly to look more old.
Old Android Market and old YouTube etc but they could be buggy because of server changes etc.
I think I'll try it tomorrow just for fun and will post screens to my group.

Hybrid 1.x GSI.
But hey! Every Dev project is a fun project!
Edit: 1.6 was kinda buggy and boring so I decided to make a "Hybrid KitKat GSI" If anyone's interested, check my group for screenshots .
Edit2: Posted an early alpha in my group. (Not going to post it on XDA just to avoid breaking rules, if there are any)

XDA doesn't allow posting Telegram links anymore. So just find one of my rom threads and it hopefully still contains a link to my group. But I think that we can get best kitkat experience by buying some older phone for cheap. KitKat launcher doesn't even support 19:9 aspect ratio so it looks kinda ugly on some devices. I know it would be cool to run KitKat on latest smartphones but Android has changed so much that even theming it to look like KitKat is pretty difficult. And some images need resizing cause they were designed to work on let's say 720p screens and lower. So when You use them on 1080p or 1440p device, icons look tiny.
You could probably create AVD with KitKat, install VNC on it and stream it to Your smartphone.

M&M's MIUI 2.3.30 ML (Gingerbread) ROM Review

Hello all!
This is my very first post on this forum... I wanted to post it in the official developer's thread, but I have no permissions to do so and I have no other choice than write it right here.... So I hope you enjoy it and so the developers. Ah, I'm from Brazil... so sorry about my poor English.
A week ago, I downloaded the latest M&M's MIUI rom (V.6) and installed in my Xperia X10. "But fallenearth, have you, in one week, experienced enough to write a review?" Yes, I did.
First of all, I have the X10a. Might be that some issues I had is because the Rom was made for X10i.. I don't know...
The good things about this ROM:
First one, is the speed. Wow! They've capped out the frameskip, and the animations and transitions flow very well. Everything runs fast. You flip the page, and there it is... doesn't choke like basically all the other roms.
The interface is very clean, so you don't need to worry about all the crappy widgets the CM roms have. By the way, this rom is based on FXP CM7.2, but much, much better. I know how people love CM, but for xperia.... hmmm...
The theme that comes with the rom is superb. There are a lot of graphics controls and options... you can even choose the color of the led for any instance of callings.
There are specific options for the launcher... witch is common, but nicely arranged.
The installation is very easy, specially because the Aroma installer. It's like installing a default program in your pc, with the touchscreen working. Really well done (even the screen keeps sliding to the right... but it's ok, much better than just in the recovery boot program)
Now, the bad things
I've experienced a lot of flaws in this rom.
The first I detected was the difficulty to connect to some WiFi devices, like the CM roms. Depending on the device, it takes an eternity to connect. Yes, I've installed the wifi modules correctly (if you don't, in attempt to switch the wifi on, you'll receive an error message).
Some apps crashes. All the entertaining "booth" apps from Pivi & Co. stop to work. The latest Root Explorer release doesn't work either. A bunch of backed up apps failed to start, so you have to download it again, losing all the backed up data...
There is no App Launcher button. In the beginning, you get lost, and then you find out that all the apps you download and install get loose in the main screen. Well, there is a magic the scroll down the full program list, but I confess... with the status bar activated, you'll rarely will be able to do so. Then, if you want to uninstall some app, you'll have to do by App Manager. It's not a real complaint, but you have to get used with it, and it might take some time.
They messed up the proximity sensor. It just doesn't work, even it turned on in settings.
The camera... oh god the camera... It comes with 2 main camera apps - the MIUI's and the Cm7. No FC and Flashlight works in CM7 Camera App, so I'll not even consider this one.
The MIUI camera, they said they'd improved it. But maybe for worse. There is no zoom, even if you choose to use the volume buttons to turn it on or off. The camera image in display lags a lot, and it's common the app crash. So, I'm sorry, but the camera sucks hard. Two camera apps and none works.
A lot of itens, shortcuts and buttons and some apps are in chinese. So, if youre not a china guy or a Jedi, you'll have to do a "Russian roulette" to choose between Task Manager or App kill, for instance.
The MIUI Music App might be the second worst thing about the rom (losing only for the camera). It's beautiful, have a lots of settings, easy to use, have a EQ, a Fade setting... It would be one of the best music app for android.... but it crashes, and crashes a lot, crashes really hard and you have to pull out the batteries and reboot the phone. It conflicts with the Activity Launcher and... dead end, reboot your phone. In a lot of times it shutted down alone, by itself, and if I pulled out the batteries it won't restart. In the main thread, they say:
Have you Problems with Freeze/FC`S etc..please do one of the following or both:
Disable the EQ (Press the menu button from within the MIUI MUSIC APP and press "Disable EQ"), or..
Turn OFF fade settings in the settings of the MIUI MUSIC APP (press the menu button,
go into settings and scroll to the bottom, its there!)
if you try one or the other and still have the issue then try both.
Click to collapse
Damn! If you have related bugs in your App and you know it before it's release, you just don't release it with the bugged issues. You try to fix, and then when you can't detect anymore bugs, you release it.
They haven't added the setting "hold volume button to change the song while locked". This is outrageous. Now they have "Shake your phone to change song"... Well, if you're going to jog, make a cooper or something... well, you're screwed.
The "Updating" app (to update the rom) doesn't work at all. If you click "search for updates, a dialog box flashes into the screen and disappears. Than, you think that it might be a "sign up" issue. So, you try to sign up. It requires your cell number to send a activation SMS. If you're in Brazil like me, for example, there's no way you number can be accepted. Always "invalid" number. So, you go to the "e-mail registration", which, I think, should be to instead a SMS, it sends you an activation e-mail. So, you click there, and you're sent to a web page of registration... all in chinese.... so...
This is not a official complaint... I mean, this is constructive information about issues I've found... I know how hard people work onto this, by themselves... But, issue detected, more chances to fix it and build a flawless rom.
So, final conclusion:
If you seek for a good, clean and fast rom, this is, from far, the best of the customs.
If you seek stability and performance, all working apps etc, I suggest the ol' good original Sony Ericsons' stock rom.
Hope you like it.
Hugs for all!
Not fully Translated to ENGLISH... Many Places Only Chinese
This ROM still not fully translated to English..
I found Chinese in many places... RESULT UNINSTALL....
Please make a full English ROM...
ROM seems very good but cannot understand few Chinese characters.
...
then flash v4 and be happy (but without better speed, smoother, miui transition, beats, xloud, bravia engine, aroma installer and and and..)

M&M Team MIUI is Best
HI,
M&M MIUI is one of the best Custom ROM based on MIUI.
I love to use MIUI but I am not able to find the best one (based on 2.3.7) similar to Cyanogenmod.
I will wait for your perfect ROM soon... Probably V7 or V8.
tried this rom today... it's ok, but oodie's prime x miui rom is far better... much smoother animations, more stable, camera works better, music app doesn't crash...
try it, it has all the good things from m&m's miui, plus some things work better
Guys, please do not compare our rom with Oodies (Great ROM) because its total other ROM.
Our ROM based on FXP and is faster because we have new driver/new Kernel etc..
Yes its right, Camcorder is laggy in High resolution but we wait for fix from FXP Team BUT Camera works FULL!! (Zoom is not surpported in Custom ROMS)
About other Issues..V4 is the stablest ROM the actually, V6 is smoother faster and has many Features but little Problems with chinese Words and 2 apps gives FC but is fixed from Team Member Mao!!
BTW: About Animation we delete ICS Transition because it seems that the ROM is more faster like our old Version with ICS Transition!
Have a nice Weekend!

Our ROM would be much better if the people using it (1) Read install guides and FAQ's and (2) Learned how to use logcat to report bugs.... I am a little insulted by this review, because you are criticizing our work and many of your complains are to do with FXP and MiUI creators themselves. It's not our fault
Good rom camera video lag?
What the change to v7.1?
I had Oodie's MIUI and M&M's MIUI and they were great...Excellent speed and functionality but sometimes very unstable, i dont like MIUI interface so i deleted them.
Im trying FeraLab Roms and they are great! Best choice and that would be my recommendation
Smoot, lots of tweak, customization 100%, Xperia S Software based, Undervolt feature that provides more battery life...
Recommending a Rom should be made on that roms thread.... Do not discourage people from trying this Rom. ...let them try n see....
No hard feelings pls

LiquidSmooth is now on the obake!!!

here is the link to the downloads. i did not create it but found out when i was downloading repo for it.
http://liquidsmooth.net/?page_id=211
i'm sure they will be adding a main thread but until then here is a gateway. have at it. it is in NIGHTLY folder.
Liquid Smooth 3-9-15 Nightly Build
Once I saw that there are official LS build for obake I had to give it a try. So far it seems to be working well, I haven't dug into it and tried everything yet but the basics are working. They do have their own performance / kernel tweaker built in and many of the usual LS options are making their way back.
One interesting thing is they do not use the CM12 theme engine, they are using 'Layers' for theming. I remember reading something about this a while back but don't know much about it. I have tried it out, there are some themes available that work with it but not as many as there are for the CM theme engine. When you download a layers theme either from Google play, XDA or the theme forum, they are 'usually' saved to a folder called 'overlays' that you access and install from the layers option in the system menu.
From what I have read about layers so far, it is supposed to be based on native android code rather than what CM did when they built their theme engine.
I played with it for a while and the themes I tried were not quite as 'polished' as the ones for the CM theme engine. But, one thing I did like was that, if you like the theme but say just one or two apps did not look right like the play store or keyboard, you could delete just the overlay for those apps and keep the rest of the theme.
***Edit*** It is not quite ready to use. The phone was not working, calls would come in and go out but there was no audio. There were a few other bugs but that was the big one.
Liquid Smooth 2-22-15 Nightly Build
I thought I would try the 2-22-25 build and I'm glad I did, it works. I could make and receive calls and the audio worked. Also, this version has the CM12 theme engine. I also noticed that LS includes the normal 'SU' for super user / root access.
I will be keeping this one and backing it up.

Rooting should not be that hard to do, the method here has been greatly improved recently (1 or 2 weeks ago)
The actual flashing takes only about 30 minutes now.
However it does not unlock the bootloader which i assume is needed for this LS rom.

Have you lost any functionality when switching to a custom ROM? (i.e. Lineage)

Hello,
I want to start by excusing myself for asking such a question. Probably some will tell me to just start trying ROM's. To those I would say that I don't want to spend days trying different ROM's when others have the answers already.
I like to customize my phone and I was very happy with my setup (OxygenOS, Magisk, Xposed, GravityBox, Flat Style Bar Indicators) until my several apps (including banking) started disliking Xposed. So now I am only left with OxygenOS, Magisk and a very limited number of customizations. This made me think about the possibility of getting back in the game of using a custom ROM, most probably LineageOS, which I used and liked for many years on my previous phones.
As I was saying, I don't want to waste too much time blindly trying a custom ROM a day, but ask you guys:
Did you feel that when you've switched to a custom ROM you missed something from Oxygen OS? Did you find any functionality that was only working well or correctly in OxygenOS?
I am asking this knowing that for example with smartphones from other OEM's the camera might give worse shots with custom ROM's.
Thanks!
Just have a look at rom video review thread and the thread for similar questions I mentioned both here https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/rom-using-t3791697/post76543724
VoLTE and WiFi Calling support is probably better on OOS right now. Custom ROMs on some devices are behind the curve on this.
you'll loose oos camera .. not a big deal specially if u use gcam but still i feel like stock cam is more reliable
Yes, 3gb of ram seems to be the limit on any lineage or aosp rom. Even with a build prop edit of more background tasks and light oom killing or none and keeping ram management light my phone would refuse to hold background apps past about 8-10 no matter how many fresh installs or updates the rom went through.

****ty OneUI or Android 9 (or both) ?

I didn't see reports on ergonomics, possibility of this new device.
I previously had a S6 edge+ with android 6 or 7 I think that offers much more options it seems to me..
For example, I could select the general background for the messages... gone here. I don't see neither the option of selecting different sound call for a particular contact. Idem for the general notifications, one sound and that's all.
What did you notice on your end ?
Just for the fun, I'll be compiling the list of bugs/inconsistencies of this new mobile.
- Apply a dark theme or use the stock one + night mode
- open Duo (google/android (apple) facetime)
Baam... the UI is white.
So is the whole point of this thread to complain about the phone? I have a suggestion, return it for another and shutup.

If this is your idea of fun you need an actual hobby or a different phone.
Are you actually complaining about OneUI and Pie?
Saying Android 6 or 7 was better?
You're obviously not aware of the fact that messaging apps have absolutely nothing to do with your Android version, you're free to extract and install apps from your S6 edge.
Android Pie is the first version or Android that attempted to implement a system-wide dark mode, there's no contest and I assume you're not very familiar with tech if you are creating an argument between old and new.
If you want to report bugs about anything to it through the Samsung members app, they're paid to check them, we are not and nothing will solve your problems here.

Request for Samsung Nougat ROM port for P905

Request one of our many gracious and wonderful developers to port a Samsung Nougat ROM for our beloved P905. I understand that porting a One UI based ROM would be very tough because of the deep changes. I hope porting a Nougat ROM from one of the many Samsung Nougat tablets would be a tad more do-able.
I once again acknowledge that our developers have their own lives to lead and priorities in life and are doing us a favor by spending their valuable time to develop ports and Lineage OS based latest android builds for our aging dinosaur.
A Samsung Nougat based ROM would be wonderful for the P905.

Hi Chudu.
What are the Samsung specific features that you're looking for when it comes to One UI or Touchwiz?
Hi shardsx,
By Samsung specific features, I mean mainly the Samsung Touchwiz/Grace UI and the myriad of settings and customization features unique to Samsung firmware.
And as a possible bonus, if the ported ROM is from another S-pen supported tablet/phone, then the included S-pen features would be the icing on the cake.
Developers like Valeria1978 have developed Lineage0S for this aging tablet based on Android 10 and it feels so much lighter on the resources. But inevitably, I find myself going back to the Note 7 ported ROM because I miss the stock Samsung firmware look and features.

Unfortunately it appears that the best path forward is to go with the Lineage OS builds from Valera1978. There hasn't been any other developers taking up the mantle with the P905, so we're only here at Android 10 by the good graces of Valera and his work. This is why I was curious to see if there was something specific to Touchwiz ROMs that appeal to you which could be mimicked in software but allow you to continue using the latest Lineage builds. For example, there's online praise of SPenCommand which is a 3rd party app (outside of Google Play) that recreates TouchWiz's S-Pen functionality for Lineage and AOSP ROMs, (note that I haven't personally purchased or used this software). LectureNotes, which I do use, is a very good note-taking alternative to S-Notes.
Since knowledge emerged on how to fix the S-Pen palm rejection that has been broken since Lineage 15.1, Lineage 17.1 has been my daily driver and working pretty well. I would have liked to stick to Lineage 16.1 as I find it more stable and polished than 17.1 but I cannot get a successful compile of Valera's 16.1 ROM to boot on my tablet.
If anyone can figure that out, I can probably provide a Lineage 16.1 build that:
- enables S-Pen palm rejection
- enables Bluetooth pairing of PS4 DualShock4 controller without the associated nasty input lag
I fully agree with you. I have not tried the Spencommand software, but now that you have mentioned it, I will try to find it and use it.
Apart from the comparative lack of customizability, there are 3 reasons which I find irksome about the 17.1 build.
First is the rotation bug. After a while, the tablet simply gets stuck in portrait mode and only a reboot gets the landscape mode working again.
Secondly, I need to swipe at least 3 or 4 times in order to pull down the quick settings and notification shade and it is extremely slow while it opens out.
Thirdly, I use my P905 a lot for making calls and in spite of trying everything, I'm unable to hear the voice of the person on the other line when on voice calls. I'm forced to use a Bluetooth speaker which is not always convenient.

The telephony aspect of this tablet is something that I am unable to provide any alternatives. My carrier appears to be incompatible with my tablet so I never looked into this at all.
In terms of the rotation bug, I use an app called Ultimate Rotation Control and manually rotate using its Notification widget. This bug exists with all versions of Lineage OS and this was the only workaround I've found which consistently works.
For the notification shade, this is one area that I think Lineage 16.1 offers a smoother experience. I found that certain apps like Youtube, TunedIn Radio, or any apps that utilizes a background image for its notification card will cause the notification shade to lag. Once an affecting app generates a notification card that causes the stuttering behavior, there's no way to recover other than to reboot. Even if the affecting app is closed, the notification shade continues to be slow and stuttery. The only workaround I've found is to disable all notifications for the affecting apps and then reboot.
In terms of quickly pulling down the notification shade with everything expanded in one go, there is an option in Lineage OS in the Settings app, under System > Status Bar -> Quick Pulldown. Enabling this option will allow a single swipe from the status bar to display a fully expanded notification shade with all the toggles and cards expanded.
I know the biggest problem for you is the telephony and call volume. Unfortunately nothing I have said is going to help with that. I hope perhaps Valera or a new developer may be able to help you. At least I hope my words would help anyone else with similar problems who happens to stumble upon this post.
Lastly, I'd like to share that to get the experience of a fullsize keyboard similar to Touchwiz, Hacker's Keyboard is probably as close as you can get with so little developers producing keyboards that are appropriate for tablets of this size.
Thank you so much for all this information. I will definitely try out the spencommand apk and hacker's keyboard.

Hi Chudu,
I'm afraid to report bad news. I tried SPenCommand downloaded from the developer's page but it doesn't seem to launch on my device using Lineage OS 17.1. If you are going to try and switch ROMs to try this software, please be aware of this potential snag.
Hi shardsx,
Can you provide me a link to the download page? I'll try it out on my weekly off and see if I'm able to launch it.

Can you provide me a link to the download page? I'll try it out on my weekly off and see if I'm able to launch it.

The developer of this app is called @emandt. He had a thread about this app here at XDA.
His website is http://www.emandt.net/Android/SPenCommand/Website/. On this page you can find the download links. This is a paid app hosted outside the Google Store and relies on an in-app purchase to unlock. As I mentioned, this app seems to instantaneously close on me so it seems to do nothing. The author seems to have last updated this app to support Android Oreo or Lineage 15.
