how to ignore the notch??? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Is there anyway to let the app ignore the notch
I know there is an option call essential notch settings in Oreo
xD

close your eyes and repeat after me:
"there is no notch"
"there is no notch"
"there is no notch"

What notch?
After no more than a few weeks I'd completely forgotten it existed.

You know what, the Chinese video app ignore the notch and create a black bar that have the same size as the notification bar....
So... There's two black bar on the left side of the screen
XD
(Long time haven't open XDA)
(It's so hard to speak English!(`Δ´)!)

There was an option in Oreo but it seems to be gone in Pie.
But yeah, for now keep chanting "there is no notch"...

Just look away...

Notch settings came a few updates into 8.1 so I expect the same with 9.

I was expecting the same until Essential responded...
"Thanks for reaching out! Android Pie changed the way all apps interact with the space around the notch, and introduced standardized methods for app developers to support full screen mode. This should drive app developers to update their apps with native full screen options, without the need for custom notch settings.
For our first Android Pie release, we are using Google's standard implementation of the notch space. We will continue to monitor adoption of Pie's full-screen capabilities and evaluate whether it makes sense to customize and re-develop our own notch settings.
Hope that helps answer your question. Have a great day!"

Dear Mr.Rubin
Please bring back Essential Notch Setting.

This will remover the notification bar. If you can get xposed working on pie or have a great gestures module you can loose the nav bar as well.
Adb shell wm overscan 0,-143,0,-150
Its a thing of beauty.
Ps I wrote this before I realized the only app that seems to he able to use this space is youtube..

Pie sucks nuts without it.

Agreed. I'm seriously considering rolling back to Oreo. What is the point of having screen real estate you can fully use.

Here is hope. Just realized youtube vanced has full working immersion. Shouldn't be long before a magisk module shows up to the rescue.

Essential stated today in their Reddit AMA that notch support will be back however, it'll take a little while due to some code rewrite thus it won't make it into the next security update.

Full screen Apps - Thought this might be a worthwhile thread

Hey,
So Hope everyone is enjoying their new Z3C, I know I am.
As a first time on-screen key user, the one thing that slightly grates on me is the way the nav bar takes up screen real estate in certain apps. So thought maybe (I'm going out on a limb here and assuming Im not the only one with that mentality) would be useful to compile a list of apps (whether they're games, or simply alternative versions of sms, browser apps) that are full screen. I.e. they support and use the 'Immersive mode' without the need for root.
Browser wise, my contribution is Javelin, which is ALMOST as fast as Chrome, but is extremely elegant and offers full screen, (via transparent nav buttons) which just looks SO much better.
Anyone else? I appreciate you can get any app to be full screen with root tactics..........but still.
Only app I've noticed so far is Reddit Sync with ads removed uses the transparent nav bar and it is beautiful.
Agreed, full immersive mode is the way to go. The on-screen nav buttons are an eyesore, IMO. I can't wait to achieve root (without unlocking the bootloader) so I can apply it to all my most used apps which look far nicer in full immersive mode.

THANKS for mentioning Javelin! I've searched for a good fullscreen browser and it seems this is just what I was looking for.
Regarding the topic - for those of you who don't know it already I can recommend Talon. It's a gorgeous twitter client that can be tweaked in every possible way.
Guys,
I expect you guys know but there is an immersive mode app that i have been using, it doesnt require root and you can even toggle it on and off from the notification bar (there is a setting to enable this).
The only issue is that for apps where you want or need to use a keyboard it doesnt work when active, though you can disable, enter text and re-enable afterwards. You can even toggle it on for the home screen.
Worked well when I was experimenting with it.

That should be this one?

I'm using All in One Gestures: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures to achieve full immersive mode right now and it's working pretty good, in addition to having a host of other useful shortcuts as well.

Just got mine too. Look at the update size!
I'm also upgrading, guess if they have resolved the battery drain issue
Anyone root it yet? Does the usual method per senor Heisenberg's directions work?
Post what's different guys.
7.1.1. Got a support tab in settings. Nothing but help guides. No support staff. New 'Moves' sub setting, which is where Gesture settings now live basically. Still looking for more...
Android Pay now pre-installed.
New Camera app? There's the grid options now.
New 'Restart' option when long pressing power button.
Keyboard has Gif support under emoji menu.
Not seeing anything more right now. Can't be bothered to check stock launcher as I use Apex. Sure there may be circular icons etc but I just don't care!
Seems like the battery Life improved, anyone?
I don't have the battery drain issue like 7.0

There are dozens of articles out there on what's new in 7.1.
I totally hate the support tab. It's completely useless for me, any other XDA member or even any non member with half a brain. In fact the whole settings page has gotten nasty post Marshmallow.
Otherwise things seem to be improving slightly with almost every iteration.

has any one been able to get the new nav bar working?
just installed the update
question
1. not the pixel launcher at default?
2. no Google Assistant
3. the navigation bar still is old design

That's the only thing I haven't been able to get it to do so far. That and I don't have as many round icons as the pictures of pixel scenes show even though I have the pixel icons all installed and the pixel launcher
Probably a silly question, but I got the OTA when rooted. Is it safe to install it from there, or should I flash it manually (I've only modified build.prop for the Assistant and have the Pixel NavBar as a substratum theme).

Not yet, from what I'm gathering it should be safe, but you lose root. I'll probably test it later today, I don't have the time to deal with it if it goes wrong right now.

This is only exclusive for Pixel Phones.
Installed it this morning. Result: No change. not a single round icon or any change!?? I am confused.
Overnight battery drain now negligible. Much better than before.

[TIP] Enable Hidden Reading Mode in OnePlus 3/3T

Hi everyone!
I've found that the OnePlus 5's "Reading Mode", which has been exclusive to the OP5 from the start, has been integrated in the latest OOS 5.0 Update for the OnePlus 3/3T but is still hidden, as expected so that this can remain an exclusive to the OP5/5T

Here's how to access the hidden settings:-
I used Nova Launcher Prime for doing this.
1. Add a Nova Launcher Activity by going into widgets.
2. Scroll down to Settings & then find "Reading Mode" & select that.
Now by clicking on that created Activity, you can access the hidden Reading Mode settings

This is great! And OnePlus said that this feature won't make it to OP3/3T via a SW update because of hardware shortcomings. I'm not sure why would they do this..

Yes they did I believe they added this mode by mistake in the OOS build for the 3/3T. I wish the new 5T's Face Unlock implementation also arrives for our 3/3T

Thanks!! Awesome work. :good::good:
This doesn't really work as it should.
We lack a hardware sensor, RGB ambient light sensor.
So what we get is basically Night mode with the Monochromatic profile.
The real deal should adapt the color of the display to the color temperature of the surroundings.
This was already possible to achieve without this entry, by enabling both the features I mentioned.
But congrats on the find. :good:
OOS ROMs are getting as stuffed as a turkey on Thanksgiving.
Thats a great find bro. Thanks for sharing
Didn't work for me.
Whenever I switch in reading mode. It goes grey for 1 second and then back to normal! Any solution?

[Q] [Oreo] Notification Bar WiFi/Mobile Data activity Icons?

Hi all,
Since updating to Oreo, data activity in the WiFi and Mobile Data icons have been moved to the left side of the icon, instead of showing inside. This causes all my icons on the left to shift every time there is data activity. Any way to turn mobile data activity off? Or at the very least revert the icon to the Nougat one?
Screenshot for explanation:

Edit: I have a Pixel 2 XL too. There's no icon blinking data activity on this phone.
I haven't found a way to access that yet, and it is a small annoyance for sure. I prefer it inside the icon, just like battery percentage.

Yeah, I prefer battery percentage to be inside too. Doesn't annoy me as much as this though.
This has come up on several threads already. Can we almagamte to raise the issue?
I have disabled the icon using UI tuner as it is constantly shifting the other icons to the left. Interesting that it's not present on Pixel.
It really seems like Xiaomi have rushed out this update to keep to their promised schedule. Hopefully we will receive a major patch soon to fix this and all the other bugs/rendering issues

The Pixel 2 XL just doesn't show when there's data activity. Battery % is also outside the icon on the Pixel 2 XL. There's no Nougat for the Pixel 2 XL so I don't have a basis for comparison on that phone. I assume the change of the icon functionality is from Nougat to Oreo, but A1 is the only phone on Oreo right now which shows data activity, hence this issue.
Bump
Anyone has any solution to this?

Immersive mode, hide status bar, ignore punch hole (without root)

I found a method for apps to ignore the punch hole to gain screen real estate (with some limitations). I hope some developer can use this to make a system-wide solution.
I did this on my s10e with One UI 3.0.
Inside MultiStar there’s a setting called “The app size stretch to camera hole”, there apps can be set to ignore the camera punch hole. By doing this you allow apps to stretch to the top of the display when hiding the status bar via adb, bx actions, etc. but elements at the top, although usable, will fall under a black or colored box and wont be visible.
Next step is to turn on “waterfall cutout” under settings/developer options/simulate display with cutout. This makes the status bar thinner on any app set to ignore the camera punch hole, and use the full screen when activating immersive modes but launchers, keyboards, edge panels, power menu, app switcher and other UI elements get black bars at both sides of the display.
It wou be amazing to see a workaround to the black bars.
I took some screenshots and edited in the camera hole for reference.

Thank you so much for this method! I have been looking for some way to utilize entire screen (instead of stuck with the default way Samsung hides their punch holes) since I purchased my Note 10. I was following someone else's advice to repack apps and set them to ignore the notch, but MultiStar is way easier to tweak and it works for all apps!

But I can't get this to work. I google multistar and saw it's an app in galaxy store, so I installed it. But I don't see any such app in the drawer. Searching settings shows nothing. It IS installed b/c I see package:com.samsung.android.multistar when I do adb shell pm list packages
Can you help? Thanks

Install "Nice Lock", it's the "launcher app" for these plugins.
