First question... When first installing TWRP, did you do a full backup? You should have backed up, then had to repeat specific steps to install TWRP to make it permanent.

Umm I wouldn't worry about updates they are not coming anymore. I'm not a 100% sure but I believe you can flash the stock recovery. img. and uninstall root. Worse case reflash nougat.

Rooted G2, still received OTA update

I have rooted my G2(D802) in stock rom.
Will I still receive Official OTA update?
1. you will, but the device will refuse to install it because it's rooted
2. you will, the device will install it and your phone will only root to recovery (if you have custom recovery)
those are the only scenarios I know of.

Yes the update can sill show up and after ignoring it a couple of times it will force itself to install and either a)if you have custom recovery you will bootloop and if you were using twrp there is a way to remove update or you will need to go Back to stock, b)if you have modified system, installed xposed or removed bloat it will refuse to install because those are things that can only be done with root and so will give message won't update because it's suspected of rooting and there are ways to make it so that it won't update but I don't remember

17S update - can't root phone anymore

Hi,
Can anyone help me, please?
I used to have the version 16s installed on my phone but after the forced update, got the official 17s version installed.
Lost root access and got a lot of chinese apps installed.
Now I can't root my phone anymore. I've tried a a lot of methods/twrps and can't get the phone to boot to twrp recovery.
After flashing the recovery.img, phone only reboot again to the chinese rom.
From what I'm reading on a xda topic, it seems the same as this guy:

Thanks for the reply. My phone used to be rooted, too (Lollipop), but became unrooted during an unwanted OTA update and can not be re-rooted ever since (Marshmallow). None of the King/o/root/etc. apps did the job over ADB from a pc or installed on my phone. Flashing supersu zip from TWRP got my phone into a bootloop last night from which I could only get out by re-locking the bootloader and installing a stock ROM. The bloody 17v update notice keep popping up and I have no choice but to let it install sooner or later. If I ever manage to re-root my device, I'll try your method.

Thank you for your reply, it is CN version.
I was able to root the phone again, by doing fastboot commands manually.
flash recovery, flash misc
After that, I was able to enter recovery mode.

Installing Official Nougat in an XT1621

Hello! Today I woke up with the notification of the new nougat update, Exciting! But I guess I have several problems: first of all, my phone is rooted, will I lose root acces? Also, I have TWRP installed. Yesterday I tried installing a security update on a device with TWRP and there was no way, will this happen to me? Another problem is my kernel, ElementalX. I've installed it since I had screen burn, but I don't really care about performing a fix everyday, but I know this kernel will prevent Nougat to install correctly. I do have a System Backup from when the kernel was not installed, and I read you can install 'just the boot.img' from TWRP restoring options but there's no "boot.img" file on my backup folder. I would like to add that I'm running on Marshmallow 6.0.1, rooted with SuperSU, using Xposed. The ElementalX kernel ver. is 3.10.84-ElementalX-G4-0.07 and the TWRP ver. is twrp-3.0.2-0-athene. Thank you all in advance!

You must return to stock recovery and stock kernel in order to flash the OTA. Yes you will lose root and will have to redo it once you are updated. The procedure for rooting in Nougat is different than on Marshmallow. There are numerous posts in this forum on the exact steps you need to take to accomplish all of this this safely. Take the time to read and research before you try anything. Don't just expect somebody to spoon feed you the info.

OTA updates after root?

Hi, I have a european S8+ fully rooted and with TWRP.
Everything's working great so far but I read somewhere that I won't receive further OTA updates.
Can I install them manually with TWRP?
If yes, 3 questions:
1. Where can I get them?
2. Do I need every single update or are the newest update always containing the older updates as well?
3. Do I lose root or TWRP after installing an update?
I've rooted with Magisk by the way.
Typically if you're rooted and modified the system partition (BusyBox or twrp or whatever) the update will not install in stock recovery. Usually you have to unroot reinstall stock recovery and flash ota. There's toolkits out that can do that. Or you can just find an awesome rom like a rooted debloated rom thats just recently updated and just flash that. Or you can what till somebody snags the ota update location then posts that.

How to get OTA updates after rooting my device?

I own the 6GB Ram version of the phone and wants to root it so as to use Titanium backup to restore all the contents of my previous phone.
But the Problem is that we are still going to get some big OTA updates regarding camera and maybe more bug fixes.
I know the general procedure for rooting the device i.e. first unlock the bootloader then install a custom recovery then root.
I just wanted to ask if I just install back the stock recovery after rooting the device then will I get the Ota updates?
And I am sorry if any similar question has already been asked, I searched but didn't find any. Thanks

im using twrp and magisk for root. i still get OTA updates. but only the full updates, the 1,5 gb size
after that i need to flash twrp again and then install magisk again too.
but no data lost or anything so if you can live with that, its no biggy.

i assume you know how to get root ? unlock bootloader, flash twrp, install magisk or supersu ?
well from there its just the same.
getting ota updates see attachment.
after the update you are back to stock recovery without data lost.
so just flash twrp again and install root again, thats all.

1. Unlock Bootloader and Flash TWRP
2. Flash and Download APK Magisk 13.3 (Root + Pass SafetyNet)
3. If there is a new update go to OnePlus 5 Downloads
4. Boot into TWRP and Flash the new update.
5. Everytime you flash a new update you must also flash Magisk Root.
6. Done
Should we flash twrp recovery and root zip right away after flashing full ota package??

You don't have to flash twrp recovery again.
You can flash a root zip right after flashing the full OTA package
