Unable to get voice in LTE, but voice works in 3G - StraightTalk & Lineage 14.1 - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear All,
I have been having this issue since last Monday (June 25).
I use Lineage OS 14.1 and G900V on StraightTalk (Verizon network).
It has been working fine in the last 12 months.
All of sudden, I can only get 3G + voice/text.
If I switched the preferred network type to LTE, I got LTE, but voice/text is dead (emergency call only).
I play around with Preferred Network Type settings via *#*#4636#*#*, also tried it with many possible combination of network type on Settings-->Cellular Networks-->Preferred network type.
Here are the settings that I found work:
CDMA auto (PRL) --> 3G + voice/text
LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) --> 3G + voice/text
LTE only --> LTE + NO voice/text (emergency call only)
LTE/UMTS auto (PRL) --> LTE + NO voice/text (emergency call only)
I want to know, does anybody else experience this issue? Is this StraightTalk issue, Verizon issue, G900V, or settings in Lineage?
Thank you so much for your help.
P.S.: If this is StraightTalk issue, please let me know what's the best BYOP carrier for LTE with StraightTalk. Or what's the best MVNO for LTE with Lineage.

I've got the G900V device with LineageOS using the Net10 with the Verizon Towers and I've got no issues with the 4G LTE Voice.
Which is weird because Straight Talk and Net10 are both sister companies owned by TracFone.
Maybe you need to update your Baseband Modem?
Mine is the QL1 Baseband Version.

Hi Ibuprophen,
Thank you for the suggestion. My baseband has been QL1, and I never touched it.
What I have been doing is updating Lineage OS (nightly build).
Did it get updated when I update LineageOS?
Do you think I need to downgrade my baseband?
Thanks a lot.

I don't believe that it's the baseband if your up to date.
When it comes to updating the LineageOS, my personal preference is that I update it around a Quarterly basis. I've never felt that it needs updates very frequently. The only caveat would be if an issue arose specific to the Firmware but, I don't currently see any issues myself.
What you may need to do is contact Straight Talk Support to get them to refresh your device in the system for the Verizon Towers.
I used to have to do this with Net10 (using the Chat session with their Support) every few months when I used to loose data and MMS suddenly.

I am on chat with StraightTalk right now. When I asked her to refresh my device in the system for the Verizon Towers, she said "That's not the process". After asking for my IMEI and SIM, she's doing something now.

Ok, so here is what she said.
Since I am not in my original activation zipcode area, I am out of luck, because all of Verizon tower is full.
She quoted the term about roaming. I told her that I'm not in Sprint network, but she insisted "roaming" simply means I am outside of my original activation code.
So, the interesting part is, she said that I need to change my area code (change my phone number literally) in order to update to the matching zipcode. I first became ST customer 5 years ago, with zipcode AAAAA, and then I moved to zipcode BBBBB and switched to CDMA (ST with Verizon network). I thought they updated my zipcode to BBBBB. Apparently, my activation zipcode forever is going to be AAAAA, unless I'm willing to change my phone number to match.
Aside from all of that, if I am not mistaken, the general rule is that MVNO users will always have lower priority. So, I think what she said is contradicting that fact, because she said if I'm in the activation zipcode then I will be guaranteed to get LTE.
I am really confused now...any idea? Is it time to switch to Net10 perhaps?
Thanks a lot.

OH MY WORD... LMAO!
Honestly, you were given a bunch of hot air based upon the fact that she really did not know what to do or what happened.
My mother moved from New Hampshire to Florida and has been in Florida for 3 years with the same New Hampshire number, a Version Samsung J3 device and Straight Talk without any issues with her 4G LTE voice at all.
A few years ago I had Net10 and gave Straight Talk a try and then a few months later, after dealing with support who gave me this type of Malachi for something else, i went right back to Net10.
Net10 isn't perfect but, I know how to talk to them and easily get things figured out.
I'll give you a hint when dealing with Net10 Support... Always use the Chat Session support. It sometimes takes a touch longer but, I always can get things done quicker and easier than through the voice call option.
If you do decide to go to Net10, be sure you that Straight Talk releases your IMEI/ESN/Serial Number (all 3 are the same but, uses different names). There's a difference between them removing the device from the your Straight Talk account and releasing the device from the system.
I do wish you the best of luck!

Yep... exactly, this is not the first time ST gave me this kind of nonsense.
I contacted them again, the rep was going to forward the case to their network specialist, unfortunately the dept. closed already. I will try again tomorrow.
Btw, I saw this forum. Any experience with this? Do you think the rep here are knowledgeable?

So, if I want to switch to Net10, should I call ST first to release the device, or Net10 first?
Thanks a lot!

I don't know about that specific forum but, those types of forums typically end up with robo type of copy and paste responses (like Google, Microsoft, Verizon and others) that ultimately ask you to contact their support team.
First, have the phone released from their system before contacting Net10. Net10 will let you know if you're still in tied to the Straight Talk system.

The new SIM card being sent (from Straight Talk I presume) is typically for the reasons including what you were told and also (of course without admitting it) if they just can't figure out what's wrong and are hoping that a new SIM will rectify the issue.
There's nothing wrong with waiting to see if this will work out for you. Basically giving them the benefit of doubt.
I'm curious to see how this works out for you. Please let me know after you get the new SIM going from them.

Yep... that's what I am afraid, they couldn't figure out how to set my SIM properly on their end, and decided to just change the SIM. I am afraid how many "zombies SIMs" in their SIM registry if this is how they handle stuff. But for sure it makes the SIM manufacturer happy, but frustrated the software developer ("Dude, you blew up my linked list!! I used 256 bit integer already!!")
Yes, I will keep you updated, thank you so much. :fingers-crossed:
Possibly my update would be "Indeed, the lawn is greener in Net10 camp!!" :victory:

Greetings Ibuprophen
So... after another chat with ST, I came to conclusion that they didn't provide any sort of training to their Customer Service team. And of course, even though they know the SIM is defective, they still cannot expedite shipping the new SIM replacement, and also it's not available in local Walmart.
I switched to Net10 today!
Porting process is not smooth, there are 2 problems, but the chat rep seemed more knowledgeable and also very courteous on the phone.
Problem #1: Their system cannot take my phone (cryptic error). They said they have to register it to Net10 system first (which means removing it from ST). Surprisingly I don't need to contact ST, they can do everything from their side (presumably because they are sister companies). So, I contacted the chat rep. Continue to problem #2...
Problem #2: After she removed my phone from ST, registered it to Net10, she still needs to create an account. Then afterward I need to go through activation process online as she cannot process credit card (I haven't purchased refill/service plan/airtime card). At the last step (placing the order, processing the payment), it failed. Three times. Continue to problem #3...
Problem #3: I need to call the rep to figure out what's wrong. At the final step when I supposedly provide the credit card to purchase the airtime card, he mentioned the price, and I asked him to enable auto-refill to get $5 off. He told me first time purchase aren't allow to enable auto-refill, even though on the activation website there is no indication of this restriction. Anyway, so I told him I will use the website without checking auto-refill... and voila... it works!
So, it's not smooth, but they're very helpful. Yep, took me 1 hour to chat and talked on the phone.
But the amazing thing is, it worked almost instantaneously!! Literally, 30 seconds after I completed online activation and number porting, while I was wrapping up the conversation with the rep (he asked if I'm willing to fill up survey), he asked me to reboot my phone and plug in the SIM card (because he saw porting is complete). To my surprise, it works! Yep.. 30 seconds to port the number is pretty cool.
And... I got everything works fine again. LTE data, voice and text work, including MMS, without changing anything (not even the APN). I know, they use the same APN anyway.
Oh.. one surprising thing is, she told me that I can use my Straight Talk SIM for Net10 service (of course, she needs to add my SIM # to Net10 account). Of course I refuse because my "fellow" in ST told me that my ST SIM card is defective
So, my conclusion is:
1. If their online activation system failed to take your device, contact the chat rep. Or phone rep.
2. Make sure you don't check auto-refill for the first time (when purchasing airtime during activation).
3. Use Net10 as it's easier to find the SIM card locally, so that if something like this happens and you need to activate new SIM, you don't have to wait 1 week for the new SIM card to arrive.
Ok, that's all. Let me know if you want me to share more details or if you have further questions.
P.S.: So... I still don't know what's the real cause why my ST behaved that way. I believe what you said is right, something wrong with Verizon tower registration. But too bad... ST reps and network specialist are not knowledgeable enough to solve it. And there goes the 512-bit integer in the making...

I wasn't aware that Net10 was now able to release a devices ESN from a sister carrier.
This worked out for you very well!
I don't use the Auto Refill myself because I sometimes don't have the funds available when it's due for a refill. I just purchase a $35 card with Unlimited everything with up to 3GB Data at 4G LTE speeds then the lower speeds afterwards (only because I use WiFi approx 90% +/- of the time).
As long as your good to go now and I'm happy that I was able to help make you happy too.

Btw, I just want to give another update.
The replacement SIM card from Straight Talk arrived, and guess what... it is the exact same SIM card as the one I got from Net10!
Inside there is a piece of paper with universal instruction to activate the SIM card for Tracfone, Net10, ST, SafeLink, Telcel, Total Wireless, and Walmart Family Mobile.
Conclusion: They (Tracfone and all of its sister companies) use universal SIM card now. No wonder the Net10 rep told me that she can activate my Net10 service on ST SIM card.
So, if that's the case, I would have used Net10 SIM and stayed with ST as it's a bit cheaper.
Update: Please see later post below.
Cheers!

Well...
TracFone is actually owned by a Mexican Telecom Company called "América Móvil" but, TracFone (HQ in Florida) is the "Parent" company of 10 major providers in the USA. They're TracFone Wireless, NET10 Wireless, Total Wireless, Safelink Wireless, Straight Talk, Telcel América, SIMPLE Mobile, Page Plus Cellular, GoSmart Mobile, and Walmart Family Mobile.
The BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) SIM Cards have always looked the same that all state TracFone on them. There's a certain set of numbers within the SIM Card Number that determines various things like the Company listed above, the carrier it's for (AT&T, Verizon, etc...) and more.
Universal SIM cards... I had chatted with a Net10 supervisor about this and I was told that this was something that has been talked about and wasn't sure exactly where this is at this point of time but, told me that this hasn't been done yet because the supervisors would have been made aware of this.
In addition, I was told that the Porting of a Cell Phone from one Sister Carrier to another has recently been established but, not for all of them yet. At this time, the only carrier that Net10 can Port a phone from is Straight Talk and more are being implemented slowly within their system over time.
Anyways, I'm happy to see that your happy now and thank you very much for letting me know know how things were going.
I, ultimately, believe that we both have learned something from each other that's a great thing!
I do wish you the best of luck my friend!

[Q] AT&T over Verizon

So my question is quite simple, and before I get flamed, yes I have tried searching. I don't think I'm typing the correct sequence of words if there is already something on this. I never post obviously, I normally creep and derive my answers that way. Obvious again that I've been here since 2012
My question is if there is a way / guide to overwrite/reprogram the phone with the AT&T firmware and software and replace the Verizon that is currently on the device. I brought the phone over from Verizon to AT&T and there are just a couple complications that are just a bother and Just over it.
I would appreciate any guidance and information any of you could provide on the subject.

I don't know if you can from a user stand point but when I was shopping around t-mobile store told me they would copy their firmware onto the phone so I could try their network. You may need to go to a store and talk to someone.
Since Verizon is CDMA and AT&T is GSM, I am not sure a simple firmware update is all that is needed to switch.

That's what I thought but they insisted they could do it. Maybe since there is a Sim slot it's easier on the the 3's.
Years ago you could almost swap sim cards and be good. Idk about it anymore. I think you would have to take all the system files/partitions and the radio and swap them for the carriers. Im sure someone else whos more, but i think it would be unreasonably hard to do.

i believe that some services would work as the phone has some radios in it for the att bands, but you would be better off trading for an att version. swappa has stuff like that all the time to straight trade
Getting service to work and getting 4Glte was no issue. That just required me to manually input APNs that were AT&T specific and presto I have service and all that jazz. My issue is a couple of other small things that really aren't big hut just thst, annoying. That's why I was seeing about the software and firmware being flashed into the device.

1+5 on sprint?

Is anyone going to try and see how the new phone works on sprint? I'm thinking about it.
I saw it has all the bands compatible. Curious if anyone is going to try this.
i have sprint, and want it... waiting for the 128gb to be available again...
edit: chatted with oneplus about sprint compatibility, got this answer : As for that concern, we still don't have official information though you may just wait for further updates from OnePlus or you can refer to our Official website.
idk about 600 for a phone that might work, stuck with about a year left on a 2 year contract...
still waiting to get the sprint chat to show on the site lol.

My concern would be that by all bands, they are talking about GSM. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. I would hold off if I was on either of those carriers.

This isn't quite correct. Verizon uses primarily Band 0 CDMA which the OnePlus 5 (And 3/3T) have included. They all lack Band 1 CDMA which is what Sprint primarily uses and Verizon uses in some major markets. Sprint also uses Band 10 CDMA. For Verizon, you can simply pop the SIM in and get service, but Sprint activation is always tied to the device and not the SIM. Sprint only allows approved devices on their network which is the biggest obstacle.
So your service would not be optimal for 1X/3G even if it were activated on Sprint. You'd most likely get no signal at all. The device does support all the LTE Bands, but while there's CDMA Support the OP5 doesn't have any of the CDMA Bands that Sprint utilizes. If you were ever able to get the device manually added in the system or Sprint approved the device on the network, then it would be essentially an LTE-Only device. Note that this might be handy or interesting in a Dual SIM set-up but probably not very optimal for an ordinary Sprint user.

It does work on Verizon as did the 3/3T. Verizon uses Band 0 in most of the country, but they do use Band 1 in some major cities, so it's not optimal. The OP3/3T/5 supports Band 2/4 but not Band 13 which is the primary LTE Band for Verizon. People have gotten 1X/3G/LTE working on Verizon, but it's not optimal due to the band support. There also may have been issues switching between CDMA and LTE but haven't checked recently for updates. If going for Dual SIM then it may work well for some people's needs.
According to this site the phone is fully compatible with Sprint then Verizon, I saw some post where people put Verizon sims and they're not able to get LTE but according to this site it should with Sprint.
Now like the comment above, Sprint will have to approve the phone in their system since they have to activate the phone, yeah it sucks but it's how evil Sprint works, Sometimes they have to add the IMEI number of the phone to put it in their system to activate.
Try and see what they said. When Google released phones that were compatible with Sprint, they did activate the phone you bought through google so this can be the same

It has zero support for CDMA (1X/3G) on Sprint since Sprint uses Band 1 and Band 10 CDMA. It would be unlikely that Sprint would whitelist the OP5 or manually add them to the database, especially considering they never added the ZTE Axon 7 which had full support for Sprint. Would certainly be pretty awesome if they did so and would benefit anyone intending to use the OP5 as an LTE-Only device.
I got the OP5 today and poped my sim in and got LTE and the carrier ID on the sim carrier information. But i have to wait and see if i can get them to add the device into the system. Which i will be on the phone with them all day I'm sure. But I'm going to give it a shot at the least. So far the phone seems awesome.

So far no. But today brings a new day. lol not giving up just yet. The guys I have talked to last night with Sprint tech support, told me to go into the store and get a new sim and that should fix my problem. They are saying that because I'm coming from a IPhone a new sim card is required. I will update tonight when I get done.

Any luck with new sprint sim card? I was not able to activate OnePlus 5 on Sprint Service. Here is comments from Sprint customer care:-
Laine P. : I totally understand how much you wanted to activate your phone. However, to activate it here in our network, I would suggest to contact back oneplus company to let the device be activated so that it will be loaded here in our system.
When I contact OnePlus they said "We are not supporting Sprint and Verizon"
I will be watching this very closely.

Well I will have my final answer today. I go back into the store and get my sim card and pop it in and see what happens if this doesn't work. Bye OP5 :crying:

G935T unlocked-running at&t firmware on att network. Can't get wi-fi calling working!

G935T unlocked-running at&t firmware on att network. Can't get wi-fi calling working!
I posted this over the Tmobile section, but realized it might be a better topic here in the AT&T section...
Sure would like some help from the brilliant minds on this board....
I bought an unlocked G935T a few months ago and have been using it on At&t (with the G935T firmware) for the last few months.
Recently, I needed to use wi-fi calling. Couldn't get it to work on TMo firmware so last night I flashed G935A firmware one it (QF3)
Firmware is working fine - everything seems to be working EXCEPT wi-fi calling. Damn you, AT&T!
I can use one of the free VOIP apps like Google Voice, of course, but when I call out I need to be able to use my cell phone number and really don't want to have to forward calls to GV every time I go into this particular building that doesn't have any cell reception.
Chatting with support this morning, they said it can't be done. I don't understand - if the hardware is the same across all US Variants, then why can't At&t firmware enable this feature? What am I missing??? GRRRRR
You have to run the AT&T firmware to get that feature.

Sorry, I missed that. The next step is to call an actual AT&T rep (at a corporate store) and make sure your SIM is provisioned correctly.

No worries. I actually went into a store yesterday. He pulled up a few threads on his tablet and basically told me it cannot be done. I have used the "please make sure my sim is provisioned correctly" in my conversations with support online and they always say that you can't provision a sim.
Should I just go in and ask for another sim?

It's definitely a SIM or account thing. With the A firmware, it is identical to the phones AT&T sells, so this is a bit of AT&T dickery. Keep escalating it with support until you either get it resolved, or give up all hope.
I forgot to mention that they told me it has to do with IMEI. If it's not an AT&T phone, the IMEI isn't in their database, and won't work. I agree- total dickery.
Yeah, unfortunately it's ultimately a carrier feature, and AT&T has chosen to be jerks about it. I can't imagine they really make that much selling handsets, but this isn't the first time they have pulled this sort of stunt. It's almost as if they are jealous of people calling Verizon the evil empire and decided to strike back.

You have to call ATT and give them the IMEI from any ATT device and that will unlock the wifi calling. Has to be an official ATT device.

S8 transition from Sprint to Verizion

Ok I have been reading about this from multiple resources and haven't seen a direct answer to my issue so I wanted to ask the community here. I want to thank everyone In advanced for taking time to read this and help me out.
I purchased a US Sprint S8 from a friend. He's called them and they unlocked the phone for us. I am attempting to add it to my Verizon plan. They are giving me the run around stating the IMEI isn't compatible. I am not seeing how this is possible as the S8 is showing it's both CDMA & GSM compatible. One rep in their tech support stated they could add the IMEI into their database and that will help resolve this, which was two days ago when they submitted that request (48 hour turnaround). I follow up with them and they are telling me it's not CDMA compatible blah blah blah. Now, the other thing worth mentioning is that when I take my Verizon SIM and insert into the sprint S8, it states that it's not a valid SIM.
Anyone recommend what's the best course of action here? I'm not the most savvy person when it comes to dealing with Odin and rooting the phone. Worse case scenario I am going to drop this thing on ebay and try to recover my expense.
Have a great day!

The it's not CDMA is bull, Sprint is a CDMA carrier. The Sprint S8 also Supports Band 13.

what model do you have?
My understanding is only 1 model is sold in the US, the SM-G950U. Has CDMA and all the LTE bands used in the US. Carriers just add their own bloatware.
Maybe you need a specific verizon sim. I know sprint needs specific sims for certain phones.

I am thinking that you may need to flash the unlocked firmware(G950U1) to your phone, which is XAA. Unlocked firmware includes many US CSC codes that should be compatible with most US carriers. Your Sprint phone may only have its own CSC which could be SPR, but Verizon's CSC is VZW.
Check out this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/snap-guide-flashing-standard-fw-carrier-t3625817 Ask your question on that thread as well.

Based off reading that thread you mentioned that would make sense hypothetically. Would you or anyone be aware if I flash this and it still doesn't work, can I flash back to sprint and sell it as a standard sprint phone? Don't want it bricked or be out the $$ by my half ass attempt of acting like I know what I'm doing.

It is always a risk, but first I flashed my unlocked model to T-Mobile firmware(using regular Odin app), used it for 2 months and recently flashed back(using custom Odin app) to unlocked firmware before putting my phone for sale of eBay. I personally take the risk especially if it doesn't work for you with Verizon and don't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to flash back in case you need it. In other words if you phone enters download mode, then it should be able to flash.

If nothing else,it's a good read,as making sure the OP6T is a good choice & all the AT&T functions you want/need will work (WI-FI Calling/VoLTE/VVM,etc....).
Typically, you shouldn't have to do a thing as far as setting the APN.
However,I'm not sure about VoLTE/VVM/WI-FI Calling working,or,if it does, requires any account adjustments/account settings changes/etc..... by AT&T Customer Care.
I have cricket (owned and operated by at&t) and as far as I know service is basically the same. All I had to do was insert the Sim from my old phone and after about a minute everything was working.
I have AT&T and when my 6T arrived I inserted my sim and received service with no issues. For lack of a better phrase it should be plug and play. I did not have AT&T for anything.

That's what I figured, judging by the short time I used AT&T Prepaid a few years back.
What sux is, at least browsing their site as a non-customer, they (AT&T) aren't exactly clear on that.
They try to make it sound as if you need to order (buy) a new SIM Card to use in a different phone, whether it's one of theirs or, a BYOD.
Is Wi-Fi Calling/VoLTE/VVM working on your OP6T w/AT&T?

Nope. They don't allow it on unlocked devices except iPhones and a small selection of Android devices. I have tried a few of the suggestions in various forum posts but none work. It's not a big deal to me because I've always had unlocked devices since I switched to AT&T and I live in an area with for reception so I'm not really missing anything that I rely on.
