Hey all!
I have been having a huge issue with my SM-G935A for a few weeks now, and I would really love you guys' help finally resolving this!
There are 2 main issues:
When plugged into my PC via (any) micro USB cable, Windows displays "The last USB Device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
And when I am charging the device via (any) micro USB cable, it does NOT fast charge. HOWEVER, if that same adapter and cable are connected to my QC2 Wireless Charger, it DOES fast charge.
The troubleshooting steps I have taken already:
Made sure the charging port was clear of any dust or debris.
Inspected for any sign of damage to port. None found.
Reboot into Safe Mode.
Used rubbing alchohol and a tiny brush to clean port. Dried in front of fan for a day and rebooted.
Tried multiple combinations of chargers/cords. It should also be noted that I only have 1 PC to test device with, but drivers were uninstalled/reinstalled via google, and then again with smartswitch. My older Galaxy S6 is recognized with no porblems.
From recovery, wiped cache
The only thing left that I can think to do software related is a FDR -_- , and I have already purchased a replacement USB port for it if it is needed.

Anyone have any other troubleshooting steps before I have to FDR/Replace USB port?

Your micro-usb port has failed. most likely one or both of the data pins have broken.
Mine did the same thing after about a year of ownership. unfortunately you can't really replace the part either (I tried) without replacing the screen because the capacitive buttons are attached to the same board that the micro-usb port is on.
Just charge via wireless charging and hope you don't ever need to use ODIN... maybe it's time to upgrade to a new phone.

That's what I was afraid of! But I was really hoping to be able to hold off on upgrading until 5g.
I forgot to mention, I have dropped it in the pool before too... Do you think over time this might have caused corrosion?
And is there any way to actually check the pins for damage?

I can't imagine being dropped in the pool would cause this, just poor craftsmanship from samsung. I don't think you'd actually be able to see any damage on the pins. Like I said your phone is still perfectly usable, you just can't really use the USB port anymore. Just buy a couple extra wireless chargers to keep around and transfer anything you need to your phone wirelessly.
I was actually only concerned about being able to specifically flash with Odin >.<

ODIN really should be a last resort. If your phone still boots, there is no reason you couldn't just apply OTA patches to it for the rest of it's life. ODIN is really only necessary if you need to fix a corrupted firmware issue (which shouldn't happen ever if you're not rooted) or if you want to flash firmware for a different variant, which is sometimes handy but never completely necessary.
Factory resets can be done from within android or from the recovery menu, and OS Upgrade ZIPs can be sideloaded on the SD Card then flashed through the recovery menu. What do you need ODIN for? Honestly i think most people overuse it, it's risky flashing a phone like that. If it gets interrupted you could hard brick your phone.

I fix phones all the time so I figured I could do it, ended up completely destroying my LCD in the process and had to purchase an entire new mid-frame assembly with LCD and charging board already installed to the tune of $225, and that was still a used part.
Let me ask you this, do you have AT&T as your carrier? And are you on a modern unlimited plan (AKA not "grandfathered"), with a paid-off device (not making payments)? If so, just call 611 and ask for the Loyalty department. They are known to provide very good deals, especially if you hint that you may switch carriers. Most people can pick up a Samsung S9 for $325 or S9+ for $425. They will make you sign a 2-year commitment but your plan's price won't change at all if you have an unlimited plan.

Has this happened to anyone else? The phone works fine. But last night I went to plug in the charger and the Mini-USB port PUSHED IN. I didn't insert it forcefully either. So I look closer and see that it's *rattling* around in the bottom.

The phone still works but with no way to charge it and no way to connect it for data, this really sucks! Can this be fixed? I don't even know what size torx bit to buy, much less if I should even bother
Broken Mini-USB connector
The same thing happen with my 8125. I called Cingular and they eventually replaced my unit. I spoke with tech support and they agreed. During the next billing cycle, they incorrectly charged me almost $350.00, so I called customer service and they reversed the charge. My unit was less than a year old.
Be alert to possible being billed for the repair. Based upon my research into this problem, it is a known design flaw and should be replaced under warranty.

I called that company up above, Pocket PC Techs. The lady was very nice, and she's discounting me on a shell change since they will have the current shell off anyways to repair the unit.
She said yes, the USB port issue is indeed common. I asked her what they do to avoid further repeated breaks. She said they use a USB socket that has a sturdier contact surface to solder to, and they warranty for 90 days. I suspect after they're done it won't break again with normal use.
They're in Fountain Valley, California... about a 45 min drive from me. She said if I bring it in the morning (their hours are 11am - 4pm M-F), they can fix the port and have it back to me with new housings in about an hour or so.
I'll report more if need be, but I strongly urge anyone with this issue to call or email this company, their act together. They do screen replacements and touch sensor as well. Also check out their accessories. Top notch stuff.

The usb port went a bit dodgy and the usb plug had to be rested on something so it would charge but it wouldnt sync
This morning i plugged it in to charge it and heard a click inside and my phone wasnt charging so i unplugged it and the port came half way out and now i cant get it to charge and im on 18% battery :S

I had the same problem. I contacted T-Mobile & they told me I would have to pay the $100+ (dont remember the exact figure) insurance deductable for a new MDA.
So I did some googling & found a place called Chicago Phone Repair (CPR). I took it to them & the problem was fixed in about an hour for $80 (with a 90 day warranty). Then I went on vacation to Texas & the USB port broke again! Took it back & they repaired it for free, but this time they used a different part (its black) & its a lot more sturdy. That was about 6 month's ago, I've had no problems since.
I had 3 MDA's all returned for usb problems. I think this is actually pretty common, I'm sorry to say. I had to get mine replaced through T-Mo.

They have had it for around a month now and not done anything apart from pushing the port right in and making the problem worse !
Im gonna fix it myself later.
That's very delicate work you're about to attempt -- if you're not an experienced electronics tech, I wouldn't chance it. Try PocketPCTechs -- they do repairs on most HTC devices.
Had the same problem. Just soldered myself, Take your time and a fine solderpoint and you will be ok.

mine didn't push in but it did stop charging. I live in the Chicagoarea so I took it to CPR. they replaced the USB port but it still is not taking a charge. very happy to say they didn't charge me anything even though they replaced the port. I am hopeing that the battery is just too drained to take a USB charge.
so I just bought a battery charger and an extra battery. I figure I can change the battery once a day and synce via bluetooth. I am just sad that I wil not be able to try different ROMs anymore unless by some fluke the usb port starts working again.

Tilt or TYTN II Mini USB repair on my own
Dear All,
I bought a used Tilt, works like a dream. Apart from the mini USB. The cable is loose in the slot, so charging and data transfer can only be done, then the phone lays on the table. If the phone is on charger and I want to answer a call, the cable falls off.
I already ordered a mini USB port and I want to do it myself. (I have no problems with soldering).
I was wondering if anyone already done something like this before. Could you give me some advices, photos, manual etc, which would help and which could help me to avoid irrevessible or expensive mistakes?

not easy to solder at all, had me struggling for hours, when i finally got it right, well, seems that it wasnt right, at least my phone charges, but there's no way it'll sync, and i did a pretty strong soldering so this would't happen again, so i don't think ill take it appart again..
btw, my wifi doesnt work, cant turn it on, and since my device wont sync, is there any way that i could fix this w/o using the cable?

Problem
My Galaxy S think it is connected to a charger all the time, and as a result of this I cannot see how much battery i have left. Neither can I boot the phone without having it in a charger, and sometimes when I connect to a wall-charger it opens kies on the phone.
While the phone is turned on it does not detect either the USB to PC cable nor the wall charger. I am still able to flash, and I have tried some different roms, but the result is the same so far.
How may i fix this?

SOLUTION
Step 1.
You need a few items to clean the usb port on your Galaxy S devise:
-A needle wich is small enough to fit in the usb port on your device (you need it for wrapping paper around it, so it has to be a thin needle)
-Methylated spirits/denatured alcohol, if you don't know what it is, use google to find a translation (this is needed to remove fat which is stuck in the usb port)
-A tiny brush of some sort, and this is the brush I used (this seemed to remove the dirt, while the other things just loosened it)
-Toilet paper, or some other kind of paper which you can wrap around the needle
if you don't have these items, you may find improvise and find something similar

Step 2
###Turn of the phone and remove the battery!###
Step 3
Tear a small piece of paper wrap it around the tip of the needle, and then dip it in the denatured alcohol. Now use carefully clean inside the usb port with the soaked paper and use the needle to move it around. Clean it for a bit, and when you're finished make sure there is no paper left in the usb port.
Step 4
Now clean the usb port with the brush, and be careful. Make sure you don't leave anything (hair, dust etc.) in there.
Step 5
Repeat step 3 and 4 at least one time.
Step 6
Put the battery back in and try to turn on your phone. If the problem is fixed, then congratulations to you If you still have this problem try repeating the process again, as you may not have cleaned the usb port proberly.
If this solution does not work for you after several tries, you're terrible at cleaning! ...or you may have another problem than a dirty usb port.

Why did this happen?
You may not have closed the lid on the usb port, and dirt and fat get stuck in there (you may not even see it). Especially fat or liquids may conduct electricity.
The Galaxy S constantly sends small electric charges to the usb, and if the electricity is conducted it will make the device think it is connected. As fat, liquids and other types of dirt may conduct electricity, the Galaxy S is "fooled" into behaving like it is connected.
This did not solve the problem. What to do?
Ask the forums of course! If they can't help you, than send your phone in for repairs. Depending on your country and the source of the problem this may or may not be done free of charge.
In Norway (where I am from) this should be free of charge according to the law, if the cause of the problem is not self inflicted.
Some people may have some kind om insurance which usually can be used in this situation as well.
Other possible problems you should check out
-Your usb port may be damaged and have loose connections (jiggle it a little to see if it works better)
-You may have a software problem with your current rom/kernel/mod (try re-flashing to solve the problem)

You should try this as well. Many phones connect to chargers or usb cables in the same way as the Galaxy S does.

You should consider buying these items anyway. You may need them for other uses Anyways, it is worth a try. It may save you time and/or money.
has the phone always been like this since you had it ?? if you have re flashed and tried various solutions, then it could be a hardware fault. possible with the usb/charging port on the phone.. you could try flashing back to stock with all 3 files and pit and re-partition, then if that doesnt work at least you can send it back to samsung with all original firmware on it... and cannot accuse you of doing it by modding the software.

it hasn't always been like that, but for the last week or so. the question is: what is the stock firmware??

so ur running the stock firmware now ?? that is strange.
why dont you try reflashing the firmware your currently running with the 3 files and pit.
i never heard such thing but il have a look about for some answers now.

oh, sorry! there was a typo, so you may have misunderstood. I have not been running the stock firmware.
I have now flashed with i9000xwjg3, which I think may have been the stock firmware (but I am not really sure). Still the same problem though...

thats really weird. normally after a reflash especially with stock and pit, it restores the phone to like new, so if the problem is still there i can only assume its a hardware fault, and its best to send back to samsung, or where ever u got it from.
Someone correct me if im wrong ???

How do you suggest I clean the USB port? it is so tiny
try scrape any dirt out with a sewing needle, a good lung full of air and a squashed up cotton wool ear bud.
This happened to my device. I eventually had to take it in to be repaired. I asked what they fixed and they told me that they replaced the mother board. Note. My phone may have been a phone with am internal sd problem.

Had this happened to me. It was the usb connection. I put in the plug and jiggle it a bit and eventually it was back to normal. I think one of the connections got loose or something.
Now I'm very careful when I have usb plugged in.
After cleaning the usb-port with alcohol, cotton whool, a special toothpick with a bruhs on it and a sewing needle i managed after several tries to get it working, and imidietly flashed back to darkys rom again without any usb issues....lovely
I can finally use my phone again

Just had the same problem, thought it was firmware related flashed a couple or roms unsuccessfully then i gave up and sent it to samsung for repair.. the service guy told me that my usb socket was rusted from water contact and they took the phone in for repair.. so i guess thats where the problem lies.. unfortunately just found out about this thread after i sent my phone.

I had a problem with my Nexus One's usb port, the pins got bent, and so I sent it into HTC for repair. Well they told me it would cost $250, and that it wouldn't be covered because they suspected user damage. (I never dropped it, my cables just stopped working and I noticed the pins were bent, so I don't think it's anything I did wrong).
Anyways, so I decided not to repair the phone, and I would just hook up a wireless charging system from the Palm Pre and transfer all my data using wifi.
Well, when I got my phone back, HTC was nice enough to relock the bootloader for me, so now I can't install cyanogen, and I can't unlock the bootloader because I can't get a USB cable to work.
Is there anyway to unlock the bootloader without a USB cable? Any help would be appreciated.
I would try adb wireless (on the market) or SSH into the phone
Edit: which, these only make sense (and I doubt either work) if you still have root, which is probably not the case
Yea you can connect ADB over WiFi - but you need the cable (or root privelges) to switch to wifi mode. You can try of them one-click root apps, then get the adb wifi widget.
I ended up getting a USB cable to work if I held it at the right angle, so I got the fastboot unlock, couldn't send a recovery firmware, but I was able to use ADB to send the files over and do a manual root, and then put a recovery on the phone. So I have resolved my problem. Next time I would be sure to not do any updates if they ship the phone with 2.2 on it.
I believe that they use a standard microUSB receptacle, which can be removed and a new one can be soldered, for a fraction of the repair price. Moreover, with tiny screwdrivers you might be able to actually correct the misaligned connector pieces.

Problem is that the leads that actually make the contact have probably popped off of the ceramic part that they are normally glued to.
This will make it very hard to actually use the cable without bending the contact leads backwards into the case.
That happened to me once with an older phone.
Well the microusb on my N7 has been half broken for almost a year now (worked only the first month before it was dropped with a cable in). Its always been able to charge and it must be a hardware issue, my other N7 connects fine to the same computer port and cable. I've also tried many other cables and computer.
Now normally this isn't a huge deal as I just transfer things I need over samba but I now have a new situation.
An OTA bootlooped it, its with stock recovery, factory reset still results in a bootloop, I can get to the bootloader fine but since my data connection never works fastboot is a no go, replacement microusb modules are $60+
I replaced the screen last month myself so my warranty is gone.
I'd like to make a temporary connection to the motherboard just to fastboot a factory image and twrp. There seem to be a few data points that could work, this thread shows one beside the battery connector http://rootzwiki.com There is also the one on the microusb module itself above the actual plug but that whole module could be messed up so I'd rather try another.
I'm not great with soldering and there is no way I could solder either of those spots on my own. Are there any other spots that would be easier? Would only the data +/- points be needed to the cable? Or is the 5v and ground needed to?

If I'm not mistaken if you buy a n7 official dock. It connects via the 4 round brass dots on the bottom of your n7 I forget what the proper term is lol. Anyways its the same as USB as far as I know. Or find the pinout of them and make something.

Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5 and I was hoping to find some help here.
When I got up this morning I unplugged my S5 from its charger. However, it was turned off which is usually not the case as I usually don't turn it off. After trying to switch it on for several times and failing with it, I asked Google for help.
What I found after some research was a hint that it might be a problem with either the battery, the charging cable or the mainboard that has been damaged/burned.
Long story short, after some testing (tried a new battery and charging cable) and going to two different repair shops, it turned out it probably is the mainboard. (I'm writing 'probably' because I don't trust those shops 100%. I left my phone at the second shop for about 2.5 hours though, for error diagnostics).
Nevertheless, what I want your help with are these three questions:
1. If there really is a problem with the mainboard, how can I find it all by myself? Is there a way to tell it apart? And is there a way of telling which (more or less) exact part/entity of the mainboard has been damaged?
2. Let's say the mainboard is damaged. Is it possible to fix it? And by fixing I don't mean to just replace the mainboard, but really fixing it. (Ofc I know it might depend on the part that has been damaged, this is why I asked Question #1).
3. Assuming there is no (feasible) way to repair that mainboard. How can I possibly save the data stored on the internal memory? Is there any Software available that can still read the storage? Or do I have to physically move the memory chip to a functioning mainboard, e.g. by soldering?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

My personal opinion would be that one or both of the following may have happened.
1) Bad Charger - Chargers can go bad without any warning that resulted in your battery going dead.
2) Bad Battery - Also can just go bad suddenly or over time.
The motherboard of your device has a type of regulator that will only allow a certain amount of voltage/amperage to pass on to the battery. It's extremely rare for a proper charger to kill a motherboard (unless jumper cables were involved LOL!).
Your best bet is to replace both the battery and the charger but, this is only a suggestion/recommendation.

Thank you very much. Unfortunately using a new battery and a new charger didn't solve the problem. And my charger is still in use for my backup phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy S2, and it's still working fine.
So it appears it really narrows down to some physical damage on the board.
After some more reading I found out that professional data recovery uses eMMC adapters for their SD card slot, as eMMC is downwards compatible to MMC. Unfortunately those adapters come at a cost of 85-230$, which of course is still cheaper than paying for professional data recovery, yet too expensive for having no actual clue how it even works. I still didn't figure out what the data will look like once I get access to the memory chip. Will I have to use an android emulator to get to the data? Will I have to use some special recovery tool to read the memory? Or is the eMMC already formatted in such a way that Windows can easily read it?
Anyway, what I'll try now is the cheapest method that came to my mind: mounting the eMMC on some sort of USB stick, that I found on aliexpress for 5$+shipping (it's called "USB3.0 eMMC 153 169 U disk PCB NS1081 main controller without flash memory for recycle emmc emcp chips").
I hope this will suffice to read the memory, somehow.
Any comments on this?

Thank you very much. Unfortunately using a new battery and a new charger didn't solve the problem. And my charger is still in use for my backup phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy S2, and it's still working fine.
So it appears it really narrows down to some physical damage on the board...

Unfortunately Motherboards can go bad suddenly too but, there's a few options.
Option 1) You can try buying a USB JIG from eBay for $3-5, it's a tool designed to force your device into download mode. It isn't guaranteed to work but if it does you can flash the firmware. If it doesn't then you only lose $5.
Option 2) You can see if there's a friendly and helpful individual at an official service center for your device for a JTAG service. Though it isn't guaranteed to work but, some may do it for nothing while others can charge up to $50 +/-. The fees are all individually determined by them. Some have the JTAG service there while others require it to be shipped to another shop to repair them and then ship it back to you.
Option 3) You can always purchase another compatible motherboard and put the new one in your device. This is an option you can do yourself if you're careful.
These options/suggestions are the best that I can think of at this time and I hope one of those will work out for you.
