Screen on time - LG V40 Real Life Review

Anyone noticed any improvement in screen on time since the Pie update?

Thought I'd see how much battery I get on Pie. Charged phone to 96% and it's now down to 15%. This gets me 4h23m on screen time, 1d1h38m standby. Strangely Nova launcher showing 44% app usage (Screen usage 15m). Used phone for web browsing on WiFi & maybe 30 minutes 4G, 1 hour Tidal Hifi using Quad DAC, screen on 50-60% brightness, location on all the time, NFC off, Bluetooth off.
Anyone else wishing to post up some stats?

This is the screen on time I've been getting. Pretty good in my opinion
Using the Sprint model
Still on oreo....

The battery last 4 hours of screen on time with around 25-20% battery left and can last until 5 hours if I use it until it dies.

I get around 5:30 hours screen on time with 15-20% remaining battery if I charge the phone 100%. I noticed that screen resolution does not affect the battery as much as the dark theme which has helped alot. I use oxygen os dark theme.
I never use bluetooth and location services very rarely, most of the day I am using wifi and mobile data is off. The signal is also pretty strong here which makes the phone use less battery for it.

I get a little bit over 6h of screen time and 7% left after one day of use. Black/night themes help a lot apparently.
I am mostly browsing, watching YouTube, netflix, listening to music. WiFi on NFC on data on, BT off.

Good stats!. What dark themes are you using?

I'm waiting for a V40 to replace my defunct S7 Edge that stopped fast charging and refused to be recognized on 2 computers with the proper drivers on them. I spent hours trying to do everything I read that can cause this. Apparently this afflicts later Samsung models as well..
Research led me to the V40. The biggest knock I read in reviews was battery life, but if I can get 4+ hrs of screen time, that'll be fine. The Edge wasn't very good on battery, either..

Battery life

I got a refurb Note 10.1 2014 from Groupon about a month ago. The battery life has been poor but I didn't use it enough to quantify it. I got home form work today and it was at 65%. After exactly an hour of use, it told me it was about to die at 5%. I can literally watch the battery percentage tick down while writing an email or browsing the web. Is this normal? I've had 11 android phones but this is my first tablet, I've never seen performance this poor.
This is my issue with android devices. If you are not an above average user and know how to trouble shoot to find what app or apps is causing your battery drain you will be left thinking the device itself is not good, when it's probably a wakelock or some background app killing your battery.
My device has good battery life. I wish it would do better with simple Internet browsing, but watching videos and other tasks are great in my opinion.
My advice, try to find if your issue is software related. After ruling that out, the only option is that out must be hardware related.

I found the battery poor for the first couple of weeks. I gave it a full charge, took it off a couple of mins after 100% each time, only letting it drain down to about 15%. I was getting about 6 hours on screen time without power hungry games.
Then a few days ago drained it full, and charged it over night, now getting 9-10hours on screen time - mainly web surfing, watching full hd film streamed off home servers and low power games (5's.....far too addictive and simple). This also includes some use streaming bluetooth to wireless speaker with screen off, so at least another hour use on top of the 10 but with the screen off.
I'm about like redsurf. 6-10 hours of screen-on depending what you are doing with it. If you are only getting 2-3 hours there is something wrong. You can check under power in the tools/settings menu to see what is eating your power. If it is a program, kill the task. If it is the screen (more than 50% any time I have checked) and you are only getting 2-3 hours, definitely something wrong.
Oh, also try turning down brightness.

Funny enough, I probably have my screen brightness set to between 10% and 25% and rarely ever need it to be turned up any higher than that.
By rooting and disabling alot of bloat stuff I get an additional 1-2 hours out of my note 10.1. Just saying
I'm sure there could be a software issue, but even if i was gaming at full brightness with 40 background apps (I don't), 2 hours is unacceptable and probably defective.

Battery life struggles

Is anyone else struggling to get more than 3hrs screen on time in a 12 hour day. I don't game or watch a lot of videos. It seems like the phone isn't going to sleep when I'm not using it. Just testing the waters if my unit is defective. I mostly web browse and read stuff on g+. My screen brightness is a little less than half with adaptive brightness on and enhanced voice over lte is disabled on Verizon. Thanks for the help.

3 hours of screen on time seems pretty good for a phone with a screen this big and with brightness around half way up. Is 3 hours SOT bringing you down to like 0 battery?
What do your battery stats say that make you think your phone isn't sleeping?
I only really tested the battery and checked the stats twice and I think the second time I had 2.5 hours of SOT over the course of 13 hours and my battery was at about 38% (also on Verizon).
I think that is pretty reasonable. If I could get 4 hours of SOT from full battery until dead I would be fine with it. Others have been posting much longer battery lives though.
I have read on this forum that one person tested the phone with the screen looping a video at full brightness and it lasted over 5 hours. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63642067&postcount=391
Some people are showing screen shots of over 5 hours of SOT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63690175&postcount=462
Off charge 23 hrs ,been using mix if WiFi and 4G all day and some poor signal areas
Do you have your bluetooth always on?
No never on unless I need it ,have WiFi on all the time and toggle mobile data on and off as I need it
Yeah my mobile network signal is mostly orange and red. I keep Bluetooth on all day for my smart watch
See it is awake all the time I made a long phone call today so I can't judge the battery today.

I found my moto 360 was keeping my phone awake (possible bug?). so I disconnected my watch and the phone actually slept when the screen was off! Give it a try!
I just have a pebble but I'll give it a try.
At 2 hours in 13 mins screen on time. Phone seems to be sleeping now but there is a bug in my battery stats. Any clue?
Here are the screen shots
Still not impressed. The phone isn't staying awake now that I disabled Bluetooth but isn't going to doze. I have purposely tried not to use my phone today.
Battery is terrible. I'm hoping once some new kernals hit it gets better... Because right now I'm thinking of returning this thing.

I used the phone heavily at work my first day with it and from 7am to 10pm I still had 40% battery left. I'm impressed with this phone.
This post will be taken down soon as there is already a dedicated post available but I get amazing battery life like 6 hours easy. I would suggest an RMA. Plenty of individuals/reviewers have commented on the performance of this phone's battery.

I am not sure why people keep complaining about BT on. I leave mine on all the time. Although i don't use my smart watch any more, so it is only connected in my car and my BT speakers at home when I want to listen to music in bedroom or so. I don't have any drains. I get 4-5 hours SOT in 24 hours. This is a first for me always owning nexus in the past. I am very happy. I also started testing the force doze mode on screen off setting with greenify today. It is making standby noticeably even better.
First day with pretty heavy use. The best battery I've had in a phone.

Install gsm battery and find what is sucking it down.
I bet anything those having battery trouble have apps syncing in the background like facebook, email, etc. My phone has been of the charger since 9am it's now 1am I have 2:20 sot with 58% battery left

I'm getting 6+ hours and true all day use, easily.
Easily the best SOT of any device I have owned... Over 6 hours yesterday and was at 45% when I plugged in for the night. I don't believe I will need to charge this thing at all other than overnight. Amazing!
Crap I'm getting 4 hours at a stretch.

The X4 has a bad cell reception. On wifi i get 7-8 hours but in mobile data only 4h maximum
I was off WiFi yesterday traveling and still had nearly 7 hours SOT by 10pm and 12% battery left. I live in rural Wyoming.
I'm at 3.5 hours SOT, and I'm still at 43%. A good bit of that was relatively intensive. I had GMaps download 3 offline maps covering 5 states, Play Music downloaded ~3GB of music for offline. I logged in and set up a bunch of apps (social media, etc), and played Clash Royale for ~1.5 hours.
AccuBattery says I'm averaging 11.2%/hour Screen On, and 0.7%/hour Screen Off.
Clash Royale is ~13-14%/hour, where both my old Nesux 5x and Nexus 7 (2013) were ~25-30%/hour.
I am extremely impressed with the battery life on this. I can't wait to get a kernel with hotplug and root with Greenify to see if I can't get it down even more.
Update: Over a 36 hour period, I got 5.5 hours SOT, and plugged it in with 12% left. That includes running benchmarks, playing games, and all the stuff I mentioned in the previous post. I'm guessing I could get 7-8hours in a day of continuous light usage, and probably an average of 6 hours SOT with a generous mix of gaming and youtube thrown in.
Overall, I'm VERY happy with the battery life.
Had 4:40hr sot at 51% battery

Background color
Can anyone help me with this question? I read that an LED screen will consume slightly less power the "whiter" it is, unlike AMOLED. So I've been changing all of my wallpapers, backgrounds, etc. to white/light to help the battery life. Could someone add to this with some facts?

That is false. OLED or AMOLED screens are made up of thousands (millions) of tiny LEDs, so black backgrounds save power by simply turning off a portion of the screen when it wants to show black. This is why you get battery saving.
The screen on the Moto X4 is a LED-backlit LTPS IPS LCD. Because the backlight is separate from the LCD itself, and the IPS LCD is an active matrix, there's no way to reduce the power consumption simply by changing the color. The IPS LCD has to use power to change the color no matter what it is, so it's kind of irrelevant. The only change that can (and WILL) make a difference on your battery life is brightness of said backlight. This is why everyone knows to lower your brightness to save power.
If there was a way to segment out the LED backlight into a per-pixel basis, then you could obtain the same battery saving features as an AMOLED screen, but at that point you're basically building 1/3 of an AMOLED screen anyways, so why not just build the whole thing?
An interesting side note, because these phones are using LTPS technology, the LCD itself does use less power than older phones, even at the same resolution. It's still dwarfed by the consumption of the backlight, but power saving is power saving, amiright?
wow, this sd630 is awesome! getting 6+ hours with some heavy wifi downloading, installing apps, making a hotspot, streaming music, watching videos, etc.. why did i ever want a flagship?? my old op3 couldn't get close even underclocked and with a black substratum theme lol
battery life is crazy on this phone. what did lenovo/moto do?
i can use it for social media and some gaming and I'm always on 4g and theres days when I dont charge it at all. loving it.
I got 6+ hrs SOT on 1st day let's see how it's perform in next few days
I am getting 8 hours SOT with moderate usage. However I am using data over WiFi only and no gaming.
battery life is great here as well.
even with 2.4ghz wifi (being at reasonable distance from the router),
browsing on screen time with speakers playing music but not on loudest,
i seem to be able to hit 10hours easily.
best phone battery i've had. (compared with Samsung SII plus & Moto g3rd
(I don't play games on my phone tho so i can't comment on that)
i'm a heavy user but only play Marvel contest of champions on my phone sometimes. Mostly i play youtube videos on loudspeaker with maximum volume, check facebook, twitter, chat on whatsapp etc. And i'm still getting nearly 6 hours of screen on time!
I don't track my SOT but definitely impressed with the X4. I normally charge my phone (and remove the charger) before going to bed (12mn) and until now (it's 2pm here), I still have 60% battery left.
I don't play games but I frequently use my phone for social and media consumption.
I'm not worried that my phone won't last til I go home (~10pm).
With my previous phone (HTC 10/ Huawei P10), the battery percentage may be around 40% by now.

I charged to full after receiving the phone yesterday. Took it off the charger around 6:45p. It's now 1:15p the next day and I'm at 9% battery remaining. I had mixed use between social media, YouTube, Spotify and some light gaming with using the big screen 85% of the time. Screen brightness and display settings are all default.
Managed 7 hours SOT which should improve after a few days.

Yesterday, I got six and a half hours SOT with and hour and a half of phone calls. If the battery life continues, I'll be happy. Had the adaptive brightness on and the adaptive screen refresh rate on. Only social media was WhatsApp and Discord.
also am part of the 6-7h screen on time gang. not intensive usage though.
This is a SOLID TIME FOR ME JUST OVER 8 HOURS on screen and as you can see i was playing a game for a hot minute.
5.5 hours 4g full day. main usage on inner screen ..
its actually pretty bad for a 4500mah phone. it need to be constantly charged ..
Some of the posters posting images from the stock battery usage chart fail to mention that those screen on times also include duration of when the device was plugged in charger.
not the best, somewhere around 6 hours sooo
Max brightness and aod im at like 4-5 hours SOT.

Its actually not 8hrs. Use an app called accubattery for a charge to charge battery backup time. The standard builtin battery monitor in samsung phones are measuring battery life from 12 to 12 midnight. So as your screen shot clearly shows, you charged the phone around 3am, so 12-3am screen on time plus 3 till full charge if the screen was on, all these count towards the screen on time as per samsung. Which obviously doesn't show the actual screen on time per charge.
Did u guys measure the sot when your z fold 2 have finish measuring the usage pattern and shows how long battery life left or before? so far still learning usage pattern getting around 7 hours of sot with both inner and outside screen usage. pretty solid especially with 120hz display
Fold 2 owner for 1 week now. I am averaging between 4-5.5 hours of SOT and this is over 24h (average) on one charge.
My device is currently set up with adaptive refresh, adaptive brightness, radio is set to 5G Auto (so I'm bouncing around 5G, LTE+ & LTE) and mixed unfolded/folded but mostly unfolded (30/70).
I'm quite impressed considering my N20U gets 3.5 to 5h of SOT at QHD/60HZ, same 5G settings.

Any more details?
Total time off the charger?
Brightness?
Apps used?
Wifi or mobile data? If mobile was it on 5G?
Media use like streaming video or music?
Using Bluetooth?
Any games?
GPS?
90hz on or off? If 90hz was on was it forced in developer options?
Dark mode on?
8 hours SOT could be really good or really bad.

Total time off the charger? - 25 hours. This is my first charge cycle
Brightness? - adaptive but mainly around 50%
Apps used? - Camera (45mins), few hours of YouTube, less than hour of games, quite a bit of time downloading and setting up apps. Twitter, web browsing. Bit of GPS on dog walk to test it.
Wifi or mobile data? If mobile was it on 5G? Indoors most of day on very poor 4G and good WiFi. Couple of hours our walking with 4G. No 5G here.
Media use like streaming video or music? Few hours YouTube. 4 or 5 hours of Spotify
Using Bluetooth? Yes quite a bit of the day (pixel buds)
Any games? Less than an hour, word games and an idle game, nothing taxing
GPS? - probably 20mins on a walk to test
90hz on or off? If 90hz was on was it forced in developer options? Dev options on but only to change animations to 0.5x. 90hz used all day.
Dark mode on? Yes
8 hours SOT could be really good or really bad.

I got the phone a little prior to noon yesterday and spent my free time yesterday getting it set up and settled in, logged into all apps etc.
I took the phone off charge at 100% last night at around 9:45pm. Overnight idle over 11 hours until this morning was 3% with 2 minutes screen on in that time. I'm now 14 hours off charge with 81% battery remaining and 2 hours 6 minutes SOT.
Usage:
Indoor on 4g (poor reception) and wifi (moderate to good reception)
Bluetooth for about 20 minutes this morning
Brightness low
Apps: Telegram, Whatsapp, Slack and a little YouTube Music and Spotify for the music
Ive also been doing some app opening time testing (just visual beteen Pixel 5 and OP7Pro)
Overall this is pretty light usage and almost considered a best case scenario but the battery life seems like it is going to be really good if this holds up over a full drain.
1st full day on mobile 4G. The phone passed 6 hours SOT of heavy use of YouTube, YouTube music videos and browsing around 50% brightness with 15% battery left, so could have pushed close to 7 hours SOT!
Steam media thought Bluetooth, and smooth display is set to on. No dark mode.
My Pixel 4 will not last more than 4 hours, and my Note 10 will be dead around 5:30 hours mark with same usage.
So very impressed with Pixel 5 battery life.

Thanks. It's good to hear some real world battery life. Reviews are just rushing over it. Results will vary but based on what you are getting and your usage I'm optimistic that my battery life will be pretty good. I wish I didn't have to wait until the end of the month.
Quite a heavy day for me, note I had the pixel buds hooked up for a long time too
quick observations now after the first night charging it full.
I went grocery shopping this morning and was away for about 70 minutes. I used Waze navigation for approx 30 minutes in total. When I got home the battery was on 93%.
I recharged it to 100%
I'm using it now for 20 minutes (WiFi, Auto screen brightness). Messaging in Telegram and WhatsApp, reading some news in the Google Feed etc. And I'm still at 100%
Actually while writing this it's 25 minutes screen-on-time and still at 100%.
Edit: now trying to drain the battery with watching Netflix... will get back soon.
Could this be a bug?? My Pixel 3 usually would be already down to 95% now

It certainly could be a bug. I had a similar issue when I first got my Pixel 2 XL. I remember fully charging it right before I went to bed. With 8 hours of being idle over night and like 30+ minutes use in the morning it was still at 100%. I rebooted the phone and it was like 96%. I think it was fixed in the first update I got after getting the phone.

Actually I'm at 8h44m SOT and have 14% battery left now. I watched a movie streaming from my NAS, streamed music with bluetooth, listened to music on the phone, made a video call, took some photos and videos, played some games, watched Netflix etc...
btw: the battery went down to 99% after 35 minutes.

It could still be a bug (or maybe on purpose) that causes the battery percentage indicator to be inaccurate at higher charges. Losing 1% in 35 minutes of use should mean that continuing to use the phone in the same way should last 3500 minutes which is obviously not true since that is 58 hours. Any kind of sustained use wouldn't even get you a quarter of that.
Based on the actual use you have over almost a full charge it does seem to be very good battery life.
Once I get mine (not shipping until October 30th in the USA) my first test will be to do a test with light tasks(browsing, Facebook, texting, etc) with dark mode off and 90hz mode off so I can compare to a screenshot I have from when I first got my Pixel 2 XL.

Amazing battery life from full charge to 1 percent
Charged this phone fully after getting it initially, then used it till 1 percent, including not charging it overnight at around 80 percent ( I think). I listened to a fair bit of YouTube, Spotify, with bluetooth headphones, and used web browsing and gaming quite a bit (mostly light gaming, idle games). Very impressed
