Half Static Screen - Connector Not Loose - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hello, I have had my Axon 7 for just over a year and two days ago the screen went suddenly half static despite the touch still working perfectly. I looked up the issue and saw that this is pretty common and that my display connector was probably loose, so I opened up the phone to make sure the connector was fully connected. Well, I booted the phone and the static was still there, so I unplugged and reattached the connector, but that didn't help either.
Given that ZTE is bankrupt and my phone is out of warranty, is there anything else I can try at home to fix this or is my phone screen just dead? I'm in California, is there anyone who could possibly fix it in the state?
Thanks for your time!

Try pushing the connector down while it's booting and see if that fixes it.

Alright, I'll try that. If it needs constant pressure I'm probably going to need to glue it or something?

Tape could also work. I added tape to my back up Axon so it doesn't happen again. You could also add something so the frame can push against the connector.

Hey, unfortunately, pressing on the connector doesn't change anything with the screen. I even tried disconnecting it and cleaning out the contacts with a can of compressed air. None of this helped.
What are my next steps? I'd really love to get this phone working again.
Thanks!

Probably playing with the wrong connector, the half static screen is common problem, ZTE repaired mine a month ago as they are still actually operating. They said it was a connector and that they put something in there to make sure it doesn't move again.

Hey, that's possible, though when I unplug this connector the screen goes completely dead. Here's an annotated image of the connector I've been messing with and the foam pad that was installed on the back of the phone, I believe to keep it in place (my phone was bought in March 2017).
https://imgur.com/0d7C2xc <- That's an Imgur link to the photo, I can't seem to get it to show up as a hyperlink or embed it into the post.
Is this the wrong connector?
Thanks!

Yep that's the connector. I'm sorry to say but it looks like the screen is toast. I seen some Samsung Galaxy S7's that have the same issue but couldn't be fixed without a new screen. And since the Axon uses a Samsung screen, that might be the issue.

Is there a place to get Axon 7 parts? I am not planning on using it as my main phone again, but if I could get a working screen I think I'd use the phone for something else. Are there any other screens that use this connector?

Touchscreen doesn't work when slider open

hi,
since yesterday, my niki doesn´t response to touchscreen tapping if the slider is opened. i hear a very quiet metallic clicking sound if i open it up... if i try tapping the touchscreen before this little click appears, the touch works... but with slider open completely, it doesn´t. i guess this is hardware specific. i´ve tried a hardreset now, but still doesnt work any advice?
EDIT: i didnt flash any other radio...
EDIT2: sometimes it does work.
Sounds like a ribbon cable has come loose to the touch screen - send it back if it is under warranty, if not, Mike Channon has collected links to the service manuals somewhere on here which should show you how to correctly take it apart, fix it and put it back together again
Cheers,
Smiffy
I had the same problem. In my device it was: cable that goes to touch screen contacted metal on back panel.
I've solve it by finding manual to take my niki apart (http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/razbor_htc_touch_dual/ - but it is in russian). I've done everything till 6 point. Then I put my v-card between this cable and metal. Now it's ok
I've got extra service on mine.
6 euro's a month.
handed in the phone today (same issue), and got given an new one! ;D

You ROCK! I had this exact same problem happen on my NIKI100 after I put Tom's Niki Project ROM on & immediately blamed it but after flashin back to stock the problem still occured & I was really bummin! I found this thread, tore my NIKI apart to step 6 as you described & I could see the spots on the metal of the inside back of the back cover where the cable was rubbing along with the protective plastic worn off on the cable a little bit so I suspect it was touching the metal & shorting out causing the problem (heck I'm surprised it didn't do some real damage!) so I cut about a 1" length of electrical tape & taped it to the area of the metal that it was rubbing on (I didn't see any legit reason for anything to make contact to that area for a ground so I figured it was OK. I started at the edge & ended just before the gaps where you would be able to see the tape from the other side in the battery cavity) and VOILA! it fixed it! To me it looks like a nasty design flaw on HTC's part but not expecting a recall any time soon. I suspect this fix will out last the phone & hopefully this thread will help others. I am 1/2 tempted to tear apart my NEON to see if the same design exists or if they put a piece of tape in that area.

Hm, same problem here. Thought first that it was an error of the ROM that I used..
Btw: isolated every contat that I could find (nearly ) but no result -> still my touchscreen doesn't work when my slide is open..
EDIT: has anyone PHOTO'S of their disassembly and isolation work? I the problem is different on my device 'cuz the cable hasn't worn off...
Ok,
Now I took my device apart to the last piece, took the display cable apart, taped it in completely and my touchscreen WORKS once again :-D.
Woot! Thumbs up for XDA-developers!
EDIT: Now my touchscreen doesn't work when slide's closed... Any suggestion?

ive brought my dual to a vodafone shop and they have fixed my dual. Replaced a part and software update, got windows 6.1 now, legal and my screen is working like a champ!
I have had the same problem with my touch screen except mine stopped working completely, it didn't matter if it was slide out or not. I could get the phone replaced on warranty though.
Just posting so people know this isn't just isolated case.
mine slowly stopped working.. im gonna disassemble later and try this. im glad im not alone
edit: worked a treat. some insulation tape on the metal shielding worked great.
That did't work for me! Can it be something else or is it the flex cable for shure? I'm considering buying a new flex cable on ebay! Will that fix the problem with touchscreen dos'nt work when slide is open?
theres a 99% chance that its the flex cable.. did you check it for any damage? mine had tiny tiny little dots with wire exposed. barely noticable but it was enough. try taping the cable. i dont know. if not, i'd get a new cable for sure.
It's worth a try. I've just bought a new cable. Hopefully it will make my
Dual working again. Now I just have to wait a week for it.
The cable arrived today and my dual now works perfect. Now the question is which phone i'll use, my dual or my new Diamond.. =)
hey, where did you get yours from? and how much did it cost?
i have seen ebay, but they are over 30$US including shipping.

X1 Ribbon cable - what happens and a fix I came up with!

Hi, I come on here quite a lot for information as it's an amazing resource! This time however, I'm attempting to give something back!
I experienced the "black screen on slide out" on Monday. Phone completely screwed. I've also had a few droppages and had it apart once before so there's no way warranty is gonna help!
I stripped it down and soon discovered what it is that actually fails on the ribbon. The coating had worn through due to rubbing on something during the slide out / in process. it had been playing up for a while, probably due to shorting out on the metal case, but now the tracks (aluminium?) had worn right down.....
In pic 1 i've circled the worn area. The shiny section is where i'd tried taping over it to prevent shorting, before i realised the tracks were gone.
Got an almost new one off ebay for 15 quid and, realising it was going to happen again, came up with a solution that, so far, looks like it will work....
A while back I bought some "anti rattle felt" for my car's dashboard - really thin and strong self adhesive felt to prevent squeaking joins between dash sections. I cut a piece of this and stuck it to the new ribbon. Once this stuff is on it's well stuck, by the way!
See pic 2 for the modded ribbon cable.
On reassembly everything is working just fine so far! Here's hoping that it lasts longer than 6 months this time!
Just need a new casing now as mine is decidedly second hand!
Hope this turns out to be of use to someone!
cool story bro
when i took apart my xperia to replace the housing this seemed like a really weak point in the device. glad to see someone who has had the problem has been able to fix it
Why does the screen go black?
Hi,
When the coating wears off the ribbon cable it exposes the tracks in it. when you slide the keyboard out the exposed tracks short out on the metal casing and the screen loses it's input signal.
thats whats happened on mine at least and i presume quite a few others?
HTH!
Update:
That's interesting: My phone was also losing signal with the keyboard out, and occasionally while closed up as well. It would just randomly drop to "no signal" for a few seconds.
It hasn't done it since replacing the ribbon cable.....could be coincidental of course.
I'm having the same problem
It just started a week ago and I got the phone in January off of ebay. I'm new to opening up the phone so could anyone help me find the correct tools or have a link to a site with pictured instructions?
I noticed that the sliding mechanism started to go loose about 4-5 months ago but didn't expect the screen not respond in landscape mode. I have yet to see the other symptoms you all are referring to. I would like to fix this before it get worse.
In mine case it went totaly black after one week of this problem... You have all the instruction on youtube, there is where i looked. For tools you can be inovative, but the exactly right ones come with housings from ebay, it is only 15EUR, and i bet you have some cracks so it wouldn't hurt replacing. That is what i did, along with ordering new sliding mechanizm, and new ribbon cable.
I am open for ideas to prevent my ribbon cable from being cut at it weakest point again.
I'm assuming my flex ribbon went bad yesterday, since sliding the keypad out causes my screen to shut off.
Already ordered a cable off ebay and will attempt to replace it myself :O
Replaced my flex ribbon cable with one I bought on eBay. The screen doesn't turn on at all now, which leads me to believe the cable I was sent is defective. Put the old one back in and it works okay, less landscape mode. ughhh what a pain.
great tips! my input is I bought a case off of ebay that was ~60$ and everything actually fit fine for me...so I wouldn't discount every seller but you do get what you pay for, the 15$ cases are probablly the ones that will give you problems
I working in a mobilephone repair center if anyone need help drop me a priv... i able to get 2nd hand or even brand new components
Replaced the flex ribbon cable -
I got my flex ribbon cable a few weeks ago and took it to my local repair shop. They replaced it but the LCD screen/optical joystick receives no power. The touchscreen and everything else on the phone works just fine now. I thought it was a defective item so it was exchanged with a new one.
Got the repair shop to replace it again and the outcome still remains the same as the first.
Theres no light coming from the screen nor the side illumination.
I just told the repair shop to just place the original back in for the mean time.
Before the repairs, there would be a flicker of white light and random illuminations. Now there's no lights at all except the power botton.
Could it be defective a batch that the seller was sending out? or the repair shop's mistake and is playing dumb so they do not have to admint fault?
Hopefully there's an easy fix to this problem.
-Also I did inspect the ribbon before and after the repair. looks new as the OEm
Can anybody help me out with this new problem after replacing the cable -
perhaps you should try a hard reset. Ive had problems in the past where the optical joystick and the illuminators did not work, and that worked for me.
On the other hand, the top illuminators are on the same piece of hardware as the flex cable that was replaced, so a faulty flex cable is possible. The bottom illuminators are on the circuit board that the optical joystick attaches to, separate but connected to the flex cable.
Ive recently replaced my flex cable and touchscreen. The experience i had with the faulty touch screen was that it appeared to receive no power, but was in fact displaying a dark backlit illumination that could only be seen in the dark. At the same time however, the screen did not display anything. I'm not sure if this is similar to your experience, but if so then your touchscreen would need to be replaced.
ive done all repairs on the xperia myself, and one thing ive discovered is if something doesnt work right after a repair, simply disassembling it and reassembling it to make sure all the connections are properly done has worked for me in the past.
"Before the repairs, there would be a flicker of white light and random illuminations. Now there's no lights at all except the power button."
Now when you say the power button, do you mean that a red light appears under it?
I dont know if i can come to a conclusion or that i can help (or have helped) you come to a conclusion, but i can only assure you that the xperia acts out in strange and weird ways.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the links. I've tried the hardreset and restoring the original rom but the issue is still there. It's really bugging me that everything works but the LCD screen. I'm currently using MyMobiler to use my phone. The touch screen works fine and so does the soft keys. Just no power for the lights. I might just give up and wait for another phone that catches my eye and then tinker with the xperia myself. but if anyone got a solution or want me to test something then I'll give it a try.
My warranty is no longer affective so I'll use my phone as a tester to help others with any problems.
TRIONDAVE, how's your Xperia running now with the cable mod that you did? Its been 6 months since you created the thread. I hope you're still around.
My Xperia X1 works nearly fine, except for the keyboard issues, so I'm thinking of opening it up. If your Ribbon mod helped I might just do it too once I've got it opened. Mine has a MOUNTain of cracks though, and the battery compartment itself is cracked on both side enough to make the compartment CURVED. Hence the Battery cover doesn't sit well.
I'm looking around for broken Xperias which I might be able to use to change the internal cracked casing. Lets see.

My thoughts exactly.
Hello guys, I am in need of real help over here!
Its just that Ive replaced my ribbon cable, the old one got screwd up.
However I got done for 10 minutes ago, tried to start up the phone.. without success :,(
The ribbon cable doesnt have anything to do with the start up, only the screen am I correct? Cause I cannot even start my phone..
Ive connected the charger, but when I remove the battery it shows a red light, meaning no battery, correct?
So what may the problem be exactly? Maybe the battery is all dead, or?
PLEASE HELP!
for the people with ribbon failures how long have you had the phone before it occurred ? im just interested on the cables lifespan.
mine is fine so far but i have noticed the slider is flimsy and rocks left and right.

[Q] Broken Screen on my Nexus 4

Hello,
I dropped my Nexus 4 (EG960) couple of months ago, ordered a new LCD + Digitizer and started to replace the screen myself.
Everything went just smoothly, I removed the broken screen, put the new one, put everything back together, slowly and safely connected all components, turned on the phone and.................
Guess what? The phone is turning on, but I can only see stripes of different colors all over the screen. I can see that the Google animation is working in the background and that the phone successfully booted. I can actually still see a line where the previous crack was.
I tried reassembling and reassembling everything slowly but still see the issue.
I can attach a picture if needed.
Am I missing anything?????
Thanks,
Liran.

Well it's great and all that you took apart and put back together but I'm not a big fan of repairing screens, digi, etc I think no matter who fixes it will never be the same as before if you could I would try to sell it and just get another one.. Or take it to a professional and try to get a warranty with repair.. Just a thought..
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Free mobile app
And still I did, and wonder what to do next. If to try and replace other components or just give up.
Option 1 is more suited to me.
Thanks a lot
Same thing
Does anyone know a solution to this problem? I replace the screen, the same problem.

We can just guess.. Maybe you damaged a flex cable or a connector/plug. If the problem persists with a second screen then I think its something on the mainboard as suggested..
maybe this helps?

[Q] Screen flickering, what should I change? Screen or Motherboard?

Hi guys, if someone here suffered from this kind of flickering >>VIDEO LINK.
How do you managed to fix it? What part did you change, the screen or the motherboard? Thanks. Really need some help. My phone now is unusable.
]]]]]] UPDATE 1[[[[[[[
Hi guys, just got my G2 back from the dead.
I send my G2 to a phone care in the city and they said my lcd is the problem, they changed the lcd+digitizer (the whole half of my G2 )and now the problem is gone. But When I got home I noticed vertical lines on my G2 when it is turned off, not really noticeable but if you look closely you can see the vertical lines and thinking that they change it with a low quality LCD. Even in white backgrounds you can see the lines but only if you have a clear eyes . I compared it to the original LCD and I don't see any vertical lines at all, it's all black. But the frame of the new lcd is solid like the original. So, in the future, will this new LCD survive or should I go the phone care again? Thanks!
***********UPDATE 2************
[UPDATE]
I think my G2 is working now after playing games for hours in 5 days, no flickering/stuttering/jittering noticed.
But, my IMEI was change and it was rooted jellybean when they give it to me. I don't know if they change the motherboard or the whole phone except for the body case and the new screen i purchased. I asked them about the changes of the phone because it's my second time returning the phone and the women on the counter said their tech just adjust something. I don't believe that, and then I saw the IMEI changed. I didn't ask why my IMEI was change, i'll wait til something goes wrong on my G2 and sue them. LOL.
I have some questions regarding this.
1) I'm not really sure if how an IMEI was change, is it for changing the motherboard?
2) Is it legal that they don't tell me what they change on my phone?
For now my G2 is still alive and no problem after upgrading to lollipop + root + twrp. Hope it goes all well now.

i went to lg service and they changed some filters on motherboard in 2 hours filter,EMI/Power 2 quantity i read on the paper. i was on warranty..
That looks crazy, it definitely would be a motherboard issue, or, I had a simliar issue while repairing them (I've re-sold about 20 of them) the flex ribbon sometimes gets dirty, or out of place(the one on the bottom under the speaker). You have to remove the back, then remove the speaker(6 screws I believe on the bottom, it;s an L shape). Once you do that, make sure the square flex cable is connected well, and there is nothing touching the circuit right under it(It has a plastic tape to keep it from touching).
The connector I'm referring to is right next to the USB one on the flex. For obvious reasons I got the image from ETrade supply. You can clean the connectors with 91% or higher alcohol, DO NOT use anything less.

When you replace your lcd they always tell you to make sure you have both connectors securely in place above the usb connector. One of them is the ground connection to your LCD!
Make sure both are fastened correctly and test before you seal your phone back together.

Hi guys, i have a similar problem. I bought a new lcd on aliexpress.....that is the video of the problem....
http://www.mediafire.com/watch/glzqihgdzz12jsj/Lgg2_lcd.mp4
The strange thing is , not in every operation make the same problem. after days i see that problem usually on facebook and a lot on clash of clans .
I make also a screenshot on the clash of clans and when i open the picture the screen flickering .....
its like when the phone show some combination of color make this problem
My Lg PRO 2 Phablet did the same from first turn on, flickering on and off, very dissapointed as i had mine direct from Hong Kong and couldnt send it back. What i did was to tak all of the screws out and take the plastic back off, then re fitted the back only, no screws and turned on, no more flickering. Then i put a couple of screws in and tried again, still no flicker, then after a couple of more screws by the sim socket it started to flicker again! Now i just run the phone minus a few screws, it must be a pressure thing!
Hi, i have exactly the same problem, specially in combination of colors (green red and blue most of the time). how did you manage to fix your phone ? did you change the mainboard ? thanks for your help.

Digitizer issue after battery replacement

Hi all. I replaced my battery, put the phone back together, and turned it on. Everything looked fine until I tried to use the touchscreen. It wouldn't register any touch. I figured I messed up the screen somehow when removing it, so I ordered a replacement screen - touch doesn't work with that either! Does anyone have a suggestion for what might be wrong?

Not to ask the stupid question...
Is the ribbon for the screen in the slot correctly? Seated all the way? Locked in place by that whatever the hell it is?
Thank you for your reply. Yes I have, it is screwed it and I've even tried pressing it down and touching it to see if it helps.

I have replaced the cracked screen on my PH-1 without issues... Since you are seeing the same problem with TWO different screens, I would check the connector on the board. Could be something like small piece of debris or dust or whatever. Remove the cable, and try inspecting it with a magnifying glass, if you can. Might be able to use a wooden toothpick to *carefully* clean it up, but I would only recommend that if you can actually see it well. You could also just blow a couple of shots of compressed air into it.
Other than that, I have no ideas, sorry...

might need a factory reset as this recilibrates the screen, back up ail your data first of course (pics, chats, game data etc). Not sure if recalibration apps still work, might be worth a shot first.
I had the same issue after replacing the screen. Someone on reddit mentioned the same problem and used a bit of foam behind the screen and its connection. I took a razor and trimmed a mm or two thick of some soft foam (used the foam that the screen was packaged in) and placed it over the connector. Touch was back after that, so it was an issue with the connection not being snug enough for me. Been over a month and everything is fine
