How to install stock firmaware on a G5 plus xt1680 that is carrier locked - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

God Day, my moto g5 plus xt1680 is carried locked so It has only received one security update.
1. Can I install a stock firmware?
2. Do I have to unlock the bootloader?
3. Will I get OTA updates after I have installed the new firmware?
Thanks for the help!!

Choose your firmware (not older then the one you're running) and flash it in fastboot mode command by command or use the attached flashall.bat in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...patch-xt1687-npns25-137-t3796797/post76661211
Make sure you have the latest Motorola drivers and something like Minmal ADB & Fastboot installed.

There is a way to re-lock the bootloader without any trace of locked in past, to not lose the warranty?

Root and twrp needed

Seeing as the moto g 3rd gen was rooted in a week after release I was wondering if we could expect the same for this fantastic device? Cm12.1 would complete this phone for me!!
It'll come in time. It might take a bit longer as this phone isn't quite as readily available everywhere (such as in the US).

Do you know what model your friend has? (xt1607- unlocked version or xt1609- Verizon model) If he has the xt1607 unlocked version then he may be doing something wrong in the process. If he has the xt1609 Verizon model then this method will not work on it because at the moment it is not rootable or bootloader unlockable.

Bootloader re lock?

How can i re lock the Bootloader?
You will have to reflash stock firmware. That does an OEM lock which restores it to what it was like when it came packaged.

But, i think if once we have updated to soak test android 7. Then we cannot relock bootloader by going down to mm? If we can then how?

There's only one correct way to unlock the bootloader, with the unlock code sent by Motorola.

This is about flashing stock, below you'll find flashing TWRP and Magisk i.e rooting. Links for TWRP, ADB and Fastboot and Magisk are included.
I'm about to make an own thread for this and expand it with things like unlocking, decrypting etc .

You don't have to flash stock (that part of the tutorial was written for another user).
After unlocking the bootloader your device will be wiped and if your build number is OPSS28.85-17-6 you should actually receive one more OTA up to OPSS28.85-17-6-2 (Feb 2019 security patch).
After unlocking and maybe getting that update you can flash the latest TWRP as usual and root by flashing magisk.zip from there.
