Navigation Gesture - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

With Android P Preview, we see that the Navigation bar has changed. The XDA made an app to bring this feature to other phones:
https://www.xda-developers.com/navigation-gestures-iphone-x-app-xda/
I want to know if anyone tested this in S8. If yes, tell me:
1. Works great ?
2. The Pressure Sensitive Home Button is working ?
Thanks !! Sorry my bad english :cyclops:

I've already tested the app,it works great, the only issue is that it sometimes gets a little lag, the Pressure sensitive Button only works to light the screen but no more as home button,

And how the new bar works in full screen (Like Clash of Clans or any other app/game that use full screen) ? It's always there ? And this little lag causes a bad experience ?

it's always there on the bottom of the screen, it means when u use fullscreen app it is also here. for me it doesn't bother me.
the little lag doesn't bother me either, compare to the great experience of full screen gesture

Tested and works pretty well.
The only problem is that when you use the keyboard the nav bag go over the keyboard up

i use Edge Gestures. i used this app to disable the system nav bar. thats the only thing the app is useful for. gesture implementation has a long way to go.

Yea keyboard is bad, there are a few apps likes this. Edge gestures, gesture x. Etc. They work through accessibility and ar ok. But i recommend root version of this still. Heres my config for titanium data restore if you want fast setup for full version. install this app first and restore data to it, screen calibrated for s8f

In my phone it still shows the nav var under the pill.
Anyway, I do think we don't have a need for this in S8/S9 when with BxActions we can get the navbar-less navigation (remapping bixby button + pressure sentive button)
I didn't know about this edge gestures app though, I'll check it out.

Works great!
I use Navigation Gestures and I really love it BUT I don't let the app hide the original navigation bar. A few problems I encounter:
1. Edge lighting is messed up. The light at the bottom is "stretched" beneath the display so it's not showing anymore.
2. Pressure sensitive does not work as Home button anymore.
What works best for me is to hide the navigation bar through the phone's Settings >> Display >> Navigation Bar >> Show and hide button. Couple that with a few swipe up gestures (like back or home) and you're all set. This way the Edge Lighting still works as intended and the pressure sensitive button still acts as Home button.
Below is my Navigation Gestures personal setup:
Swipe Up - Back
Swipe Up and Hold - Home
Swipe Left and Hold - Split Screen
Swipe Right - Previous App
Swipe Right and hold - Recent Apps
Swipe Down - Hide Pill
The rest - No action
I also set the vertical position to zero (0) to ensure the swipes are accurate. Yes the original navigation bar will pop-out once you do the gestures but I have no concerns since I also love the design. Quite a unique experience on my S8 device

Best Combo
I tried practically all the possible apps and combos, and i found out the following works best:
1. Install All-in-one gestures. Open it and Grant whatever it needs (if you agree ) and then enable more hot spots and use straight lines.
Define the three swipe up areas from bottom edge to suite your needs (mine are set to mimic original button arrangement)
1. Move Nav bar out of the way: this is acheived by overscanning the display area and moving the navbar outside the visible screen. That is what XDA gesture nav uses. This require ADB from the computer.
The command is
adb shell wm overscan 0,0,0,-160
(Play around with the -160 value to suite your screen resolution)
To revert it:
adb shell wm overscan 0,0,0,0
Voila, done.
Now use something to map the pressure sensitive button to Google assistant if u require that. (Otherwise the pressure sensitive button does nothing). I suppose you can use BxActions for that, though i haven't tried it.
I hope this is helpful to you all.

Hi Guys!
Recently got an update on my S8. Now I'm on Android 9.0. On Android 8.0 when I had always on display and Navigation Gesture was working fine. On always on display, there was this little square on the bottom of the display. Now when I'm on 9.0 that bottom is gone! I need to disable Navigation Gesture to have the square back... Did anyone sort this problem out? Thanks in Advance

Its a great way to quickly press and toggle on/off your radios, BUT what i think would be FANTASTIC is that a long press or a hold on that same icon (so you're not wasting any more space)... Will launch the settings for that button.
Example, long press on:
1. Wi-Fi - takes you to WiFi setting
2. Bluetooth - takes you to Bluetooth settings
3. GPS - Maybe have this launch an application,
(i prefer GPS-Status, but I could see others wanting Google Maps)
4. Silent/Vibration - (see notes below)
or have it take you to settings/Sound/volume popup
or /setting/sound/vibrate popup
5. 4G - (see notes below)
or have it take you to Wireless/network settings
I understand cyanogenmod has a feature that allows you to select which widgets to display in this area. Great feature, because who really uses the silent button up top, that's what the volume rocker is for... And im sure 60-80% of us are not in a 4g area so that's a waste too.
I see no need for the Silent/Vibration in the pull down, we have a hardware rocker that does the same thing. So i say replace it with Brightness Auto on/off (with a long press going to settings/display)
Optional (i would like some feedback)
For most of us not is a 4g I would like 1 of three things
1. I love the tiny flashlight app/widget so it would be nice to pull down and turn flash light on/off https://market.android.com/details?id=com.devuni.flashlight (long press opening app?!?)
2. Open Phone, (log press open contacts)
3. DroCap (so you can take a screen shot.)
4. IDK what do you think????
So 1st off from a development point is this possible, The log press to other action and changing default action of slient/4G?!?!
And what do you thing about this request?!?!?
Thanks to the great delevorpers here and mkasick for his Ringer volume fix!!
That is a huge request lol. Not impossible but some major framework editing required. I don't have the time right this second but I'll look at trying to get one button to work just to see how hard it is

Even 3g toggl in place of 4g toggle would be a huge help to me =D i know it's not so hard to press the power key, but (half?) of the US doesn't have 4g lol
Lol, I guess it is a big request, I'm not a developer so I wasn't thinking what would be involved.
I was just throughing it out there.
...But I was pretty sure that if it could be done, it would be incorporated into most of the Roms here.

Not exactly we can attempt to rewrite ours but we have tw framework-res.apk controlling our status bar buttons and it don't like to be altered at all and I wonder if any of this had to be changed before the os was built by the compiler but most likely not on that

As someone who travels quite a bit, I can tell you that the vast majority of the country does not have 4g. Population-wise, 4g is near a lot of people (major cities/large population), but geographically it is almost non-existant.
As for the idea in this thread, if someone could get this to work it would open up a whole mess of new possibilities. I'd imagine if you could make the toggles open up the settings, you could also make them do a whole slew of other things, and maybe even replace the dock entirely for those of us who prefer things minimalistic. Not holding out any hope, but it would be really really cool.

Swipepad does pretty much what you are asking, only in a slightly different way. It's even a little better, I think, because the swipepad will appear even at times when you can't get the drop-down thing because you are inside an app. Anyway, it's a free app in the market that I use for a lot of the stuff you are wanting (basically it gives you 12 quick launch buttons that you can set to whatever you want and which appear when you swipe on an area of your choosing) --- try it out and see if it meets your needs:

I love this app! Key to it is say you on default top right. Don't slide down the edge and to the right it opens notifications. Put your finger right where the screen color ends and the black border starts anywhere that red line showes when you set it up. It vibrates then slide to the left

This is how to disable capacitive buttons & Add on-screen softkeys

In another thread, I nonchalantly posted that I was able to disable the capacitive buttons on my 8.4 and enable on-screen softkey menu buttons. This, surprisingly, has garnered a lot of PMs and requests for how I was able to achieve this, so I've decided to write up a quick guide on how I was able to do it.
*Root required*
1.) Download & install LMT launcher HERE. This allows you to use the PIE on-screen menu navigation softkeys. I love it even moreso than the stock Android softkeys. Here's what my 8.4 looks like with LMT enabled:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
(The PIE navigation only show up if you swipe your finger from the side of the screen)
2.) Configure LMT as you deem necessary. It works right off the bat, but you'll probably want to mess around with the settings to your taste preference.
Now to disabling your capacitive buttons:
3.) Download a file explorer/manager (I used Root Explorer)
4.) Using Root Explorer, navigate to System > usr > keylayout, and open Generic.kl in Text Editor. Say "Yes" when asked if you'd like to remount the file as read-write.
5.) Once the file has been opened, navigate to key 158 (back) and key 254 (app_switch), and put a "#" sign in front of each line. Save the file. After rebooting, your back and appswitch capacitive keys will no longer function. I personally left the home button enabled, but you can find the home button key in that same Generic.kl file and disable it if that's what you'd like to do.
6.) Next up is disabling the backlight on your capacitive keys, which was waayyy easier than I ever thought it would be. Simply navigate to Settings > Device > Display > Touch key light duration, and switch the setting to "Always off". Wah lah! Now your capacitive keys are disabled and their backlights no longer light up.
That's it! You are now all set to go with disabled capacitive buttons/backlights and have a handy on-screen PIE navigation menu. No more accidentally bumping the back button in the middle of a game. No more distracting backlights annoying you when you're trying to watch Netflix.
There's also a way to add the stock android style soft-menu buttons, but I was only able to make it work in portrait mode, not landscape. I prefer LMT anyways. However, if anyone wants to add the stock android soft-menu buttons, let me know. I can always add it to this guide.
Awesome
Thank you soo much for this thread!
I was looking on how to do it on this tablet safely
I messaged you :3
Thank you.
I will post my results
It did worked on my tab pro 8.4!
Thanks Op
How about stock launcher and the softkeys from android ?
Just found a way for the S4 here at xda.
I come from the LG G Pad, in all points the Pro 8.4 is much better, but ill missing alot the software buttons and the option to change them.
Thanks, nice

Some features work fine. Pie controls work well and it will disable home, back, and recent cap buttons. Enabling nav bar only works in portrait. I use the pie controls from gravity box on mine with system info disabled and have them set to bottom and left side activation as enabling right side interferes with multi window pull out set to 2 px activation. I use the capacitive button disable from this tutorial so that my home button will work.
I'm curious as to why one would want to disable the capacitve buttons?

I use a tablet almost exclusively in landscape mode, this causes me no end of accidental touches to back and recent capacitive buttons while I'm surfing the web or playing a game which after 3 or 300 times in a few minutes is enough to make baby Jebus cry. I used to think cap buttons were a good idea as well until I started using a tablet in landscape. God awful sir. God awful.

I don't have my tablet in front of me now but it was really simple. Just open the LMT software, go to the "PIE" tab, and customize the buttons as you'd like. This is all from memory though so I could be a bit off on where to find the settings, but they're easy enough to find.

Sorry I should have tried that. I thought those settings were to set up additional buttons on top of the base ones since the default action on all of the non-longpress ones were set to disable. I just chose the first 3 and set them to back, home, recent apps and it set it the way you had it.
Thanks.
While in landscape, accidentally triggering the capactive button is quite annoying, thanks for sharing, would like to disable it for my tab.

Just FYI, you can run LMT launcher over an other launcher without issue. I'm using the Google Experience Launcher with LMT also installed.
I tried Pie Control and it truly pales in comparison to LMT.
Ok thanks. I will give a try.

PIE Controls are a Nuisance Now

So I just updated to the latest beta/RC/whatever and go to move PIE controls to the right of the screen like I have been for weeks.
There seems to be some change in the code that lets PIE controls activate no matter where my thumb is on the right side of the screen(I mount PIE to the right side). This used to only activate when the screen was swiped from the middle of the right side.
So now when I'm typing and I tap on P or Backspace or Enter(anything on the right side of the keyboard) PIE controls activate and it sends me to Google Now
I imagine this change was made so that tablet users can activate PIE from anywhere on the side of the screen, and I understand that. But why change this on smartphones? It's not like the PIE controls even follow my thumb when swiping from the top or bottom of the side of the screen on my Nexus 5, like it does on my Nexus 7.
I just don't get why this change happened and it's incredibly annoying. I've had this happen 4 times in the past 10 minutes since updating only 30 minutes ago.
Please add an option to disable this 'feature' or revert it back to the way it was. I'm having to use pie controls from the bottom now

tl;dr but to be honest, its better implement then old pie behavior. More responsive and better snap points.
this is what you can do though:
go HERE
then go HERE and copy repo init in description right right
then look for new pie commits here: https://github.com/AOSPA/android_frameworks_base
and revert the new pie commits
Good luck and god speed

I have exactly the same problem! Actually, I already posted in this forum and opened a bug-report! It is really incredibly annoying if you are typing and suddenly end up in Google Now!! I hope there's gonna be an option to change this soon!! Really drives me crazy!
LMT Launcher
PA introduced me to pie when it first came out. I soon after discovered LMT Launcher and since then I have never used any pie that is baked into a rom. IMHO it is a far superior product, even if all you use is the pie functions.

I just use the navigation keys instead of Pie.
I have to concur... I miss the old PIE controls. Granted, the new one looks much cleaner and is easier to implement, but I'd still like just a BIT more customization.

I am using Paranoid 4.42 and pie control appears only at the bottom. I cant find the options in settings to customize it. even from quick settings. I had LMT earlier. which worked real fine

This.
I really like the PA rom, but the PIE system didnt really offer much to me, and got in the way.
Not to mention the settingf for it are buried bafflingly deep in an already rather confusing settings arrangement.

I concur. Have always been a fan of the PA Pie feature. I appreciate why PA wants the Googly new look in 4+---as a result, customization is either rid of or minimized.
However, when it comes to the PA4+ Pie, my biggest complaint is its speed. There is a small but annoying delay when you finger swipes from the edge and when the Pie pops out. I know it's programmed behavior but it makes the phone feel laggy, to me. A lot of words have been spent on "butter smooth" performance. This contradicts.
So, I'm in Immersive but with the native Pie disabled. Instead, I am using LMT Launcher. Instantaneous response with the added bonus of color customization.
Still, if only...
I have problems with performance too. Galaxy Note 3 and its bit laggy.

Great app, I really love it!
Working excelent in xTraSmooth.
Update 1.0.2
root is no longer asked during boot but its now only asked when needed by doing this you no longer need to select enable su during boot in superSU
I understand you want people to buy the full version but there seems to be no indication of what the default settings are and no way to find out so Im just swiping randomly to see what happens. Good luck ?
---------- Post added at 10:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:09 AM ----------
There should also be some sort of visual demonstration of where to swipe on screen before leaving your app menu. On my tablet in landscape swipes are working but in portrait I can't seem to swipe anywhere?

ill be adding help and demonstrations into the next update
for now ill tell you what the default settings are
left edge swipe up = search
left swipe up = back
center swipe up = home
right swipe up = recents
right edge swipe up = menu
two finger swipe up = none
three finger swipe up = none
four finger swipe up = none
in portrait gestures should be from the bottom
in landscape gestures should be on the right
i don't own a tablet so i have not had the chance to test on a tablet
does your tablet have a status bar at the bottom that could conflict with the gestures ill add a option so you can pick what side you want the gestures to be on
Update 1.0.3
Added help
Added alpha settings
Added option to swipe from right side
Bug fixes
Awesome
Was using GMD gesture control for years since 4.0 and it is currently not supported in 5.0.....this app made my day.....though i was also using 'All in one gesture' app recently.....i find this simple and easy as its pre configured. Keep it up....will buy the paid version once more gestures are added. thanks

İ also was using all in one gestures but could not have it 100% how i wanted it to be so i made my own
I was not thinking about adding any more gestures i did not want to take more then 1 edge of the screen i could add somthing like L shape gestures but the only way i can think of implementing that will put a delay on normal gestures and i want the gestures to be as fast and responsive as posible maybe i could add angle swipes but i did not want to make it to complex i also was thiniking about a swipeing dock maybe i will implement that but im not 100% sure yet im trying to keep it light but now that im thinking about it a dock could be sexy
Nice app
Thanks for the response and that was me on google play store
My tablet has a navigation bar but as soon as I get the gestures set up I will be removing the nav bar as it's pretty annoying on a large tablet screen, having a huge line at the bottom of the screen for just 3 small buttons!

1.0.3 should work better for you
if you increase the alpha you can see where the gesture gets activated so you know where to swipe
can you add someone post a video of someone using it? Might help with downloads and info... someone seeing in it in action
This is brilliant. This is the first non-intrusive nav bar replacement app solution I've found. For .64p it's very modest and should stay that way. Thank you for your help and nice simple app!
By the way, when in landscape, the swipes on the right-side should be labeled as top, middle and bottom, in conjunction with right, middle and left for portrait mode on the bottom-side. This way whether you're in landscape or portrait, the swipes stay in the same place [emoji12]
Hope this makes sense! [emoji106]

the code for disabling screen navitgations didnt work for me... ??
It's pretty good, I'm loving it. Great job. The only problem I have with it is that it takes some time to launch an app if it's set as a shortcut and it leads to making it feel unresponsive
"ok google" not working on home screen
i encountered this problem happening only when i am using this app "swipe navigation" otherwise the "ok google" is working from home screen.
please fix this asap ......................

ok its now doing the same with me and iv worked out why
****Edit 1
if you use the home swipe/key and try to launch a app just after you went home it will not work iv looked around found that i may need to add STOP_APP_SWITCHES permission to remove the delay lets see if that works
****Edit 2
OK i cant add the STOP_APP_SWITCHES permission unless its a system app so i need to try and find another workaround until then there will be a 5 second delay before you can press home and launch a app its a android security thing
****Edit 3
Woohoo worked out how to fix it and i did not have to do anything special instead of using the accessibility service to go home just used a intent and it no longer has the delay

Things you miss after Lollipop update on your Z3

Hi folks, I recently got the update notification and updated my D6603 to Lollipop. I do like Lollipop's new features, but there are a few things I miss from the previous version:
Slide from left to right in the middle to unlock. I used to be able to hold the phone with one hand and slide with my thumb, but now it's from bottom to top. The motion is harder to do, but it's something to get used to.
Remove all from recent apps menu. I cannot find a button to remove all apps in one press. It's not there anymore.
Wishful features/changes:
THE CAMERA! I don't see any improvements on the camera. Still smudgy photos and pink issue with white background, etc. Going through the picture thread is still a disappoint. My hopes for this fix with the update has been lost.
Remove Small apps completely from Recent apps menu. I have never use this and it takes up space on the bottom of the screen, especially when flipping through Recent apps cards. Got this removed, thanks to lu99ke!
That's all I can think of for now. Got yours? Please share!

Hey Hanime
Your wish has been granted!! There is a way to remove small apps from the recent screen - no root required! You just need to be able to run and ADB command ...
I can't post the link but google "remove small apps z3" and you will see a post in the android central forums..
Look for comments on this post as with lollipop, you need to use "hide" instead of block.
See attached pic of it on my phone... Looks HEAPS better.
Cheers

Lu99ke, thank you for this! I will give this a whirl when I get home tonight. Awesome!
NP!
Sound Mode in Quick Settings. I can't mute calls / messages anymore while listening to music as it only affects the media volume.. I would have to go the long way over settings. Is there any work around? Preferably not a widget.
LED notification light in Silent mode
If you switch your phone to silent mode the LED notification light you will not be on If you got a notification.. This not Sony fault
very annoying
Notification bar icons. Not only are they pretty ugly designs but they're also varying in sizes and don't seem to follow any kind of consistent theme.

You still get the notification light if you set it to vibrate. I rarely use silent as I think vibrate is well, silent enough.

Speaking of vibration, how do I get rid of the vibration on keypress of the home row buttons on the bottom (including back and recent apps buttons)?

Thank you very much!
I noticed the physical camera button opens the camera app with a chime sound now. I turned it off via the camera settings (Sound = Off), but it still chimes. The touch version opens the camera silently. Anybody know how to turn the chime off?
Also, on the lock screen, it says "No Service" even when I have service. And it continues to say so until a good restart or when I download the "Internet Settings" again. Normally, it should show my carrier, T-Mobile. Anyone having this issue?
My Xperia with Facebook app does not work. I have it and had put my FB account but when I want to share a picture there is no opiton to use "Xperia with Facebook"

Didn't found how to, but it was the same in KK.
i missing unlock via Bluetooth, a loved this feature on kitkat via my smardband 10, on lollipop there is only smartlock an this is sh**y, because you can not set a distance for the feature to unlock.
