Some questions about rooting, custom roms etc. - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello.
First I'd like to say that i haven't ever tried anything like rooting my phone or custom roms so that you know what you're dealing with
Lately I've been bored with my s8 plus(SM-G955F). Was even considering buying a different phone but then i remembered reading about rooting and custom roms so i thought i might give it a try.
I've been reading a bit about rooting and roms but all the information and methods can be a little overwhelming for someone like me who doesn't really know what he's doing. Basically i need help.
While looking for custom rom i'd like to try i settled on renovate ice and i have some questions.
Do i need to root before flashing a custom rom or does the rom come rooted already?
From what i understand i have to start with installing TWRP with odin but what then? root or rom?
Basically if anyone would be kind enough to provide some links with steps i need to take to install that rom and root my device and not mess it up i'd be grateful.
In case you need it I'm on the latest OTA i've received.

Hello there , you do not need to root your to flash a custom rom . All you need is to backup your data for you own safety and flash TWRP recovery through Odin probram . Renovate ice is most famous and stable rom you can try . It has same UI as the stock rom . Little changes only you might wont see me . If you want to change UI you should for another rom . Also root comes with the rom inbuild, specificaly renovate ice has two options to chose, magisk or supersu . Personally i prefer Magisk before through this app ' you can' modify your system, its like xposed framework.
Link how to flash twrp recovery working on s8 plus, just be carefull to flash the correct image : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SqgHFcHLMw
Link how to flash a rom : https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-custom-rom-android/

So I installed TWRP like in the video.
Everything seemed to work i had a clean install of stock ore with twrp. When i tried to boot into twrp i had the "only official binaries" bootloop. So i flashed a bootloader and i was stuck on galaxy s8+ screen. Went into download mode to flash stock firmware but can't do anything. Stuck in download mode and can't flash anything now... How do i get out of it?
Edit:
Ok. Found a way to flash the bootloader. now I'm back to "only official binaries" bootloop.
Edit 2:
Ok managed to get everything to work. At least it appears so for now.
Had to flash nougat firmware then installed twrp, rom and root and it worked.
I thought something went wrong because it was very laggy but after rebooting it seems okay. We'll see how it goes from here.
Gonna google it and try to fix it but if anyone has any ideas i'd be grateful

Galaxy S4 CM 12??

Guys i heard official CM 12 for Galax s4 i9505 released, i wanna install it, the problem is im a completely noob for install custom OS, never done it, im afraid i might brick the phone, can you guy guide me to do this please, current stock version 4.4.2 is very laggy :S
Thanks
Firstly, you have to be rooted.
I used this guide to root my s4. Installation instructions on second post.
Warning: Make sure you have the right model. Do not use CF-Auto-Root if you have an AT&T or VZW branded s4.
After rooting you will need a custom recovery.
There are several custom recoveries. The most popular being ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
You can use ROM manager from the play store to install a custom recovery.
Or go here and use that guide.
After rooting and installing a custom recovery you can flash a custom rom. What you need to do when flashing a custom rom depends on the rom itself. See the rom installation instructions for that.
It's not hard if you follow the guides carefully. Or you can as a friend (who is more experienced at this) to help you

You could flash the Google Play Edition ROM found here. I use it myself and it's very stable and haven't encountered any problems so far.
Edit: Only downside is that you can't move apps to sd card. It's not supported yet.

that sucks :. im a heavy app user ,anyways did your phone lagg on stock android? mine is very laggy.. its on 4.4.2
Not able to move apps to sd card is only a problem when you have the 16GB version. But I heard there is some workaround for this.
In my opinion stock rom was pretty fluid. Didn't have any stuttering. Only lag I ever experience was when changing music tracks and the home button lag. But I have the international (unbranded) version of the S4. Which means no carrier bloatware to suck up the power and performance of the phone.
The gpe rom does seem faster and smoother compared to stock firmware.

a few questions about installing rom.

so i got a good deal on a s7 edge. Now im looking into installing custom rom and i guess the superman rom is the one to go for but i have a few questions..
1. is it worth it over the stock samsung rom that comes with it?
2. Does the phone need to be rooted? (I know, dumb question, but developers dont really mention it that clearly tbh)
On the installation video of the superman ROM i saw a few things come by which caught my attention and these are as follow
1.Wipe method
should i do full wipe or clean install? whats the difference?
2.CSC,
I understood u need it for VoLTE and wificalling, so choosing my right country fixes that?
3.build.prop tweaks
stock is obvious choice, but what is their advantage with no tweaks?
4. Magisk.
I understand this is rooting with keeping OTA updates, but when i want to install the rom im already rooted right?
so what i tought, when installing, i should install magisk with phh magisk root to keep the OTA updates? or do i need to do more than just that?
I know its quite a lot so im hoping somebody wants to answer them for me, it would be highly appreciated!!!

Hi,
It looks like you have SM-G900F S5 model (Qualcomm Snapdragon / klte) with latest Polish unbranded android 6.0.1 on it.
I doubt if you are ready for flashing any custom staff to your phone as you even can't identify a proper custom recovery ....
Saying: "I'm a noob" doesn't help. Before flashing anything on my phone I was reading a lot in order to understand what I was going to do so I encourage you to do the same.
1. Before flashing anything you need to understand what is Samsung KNOX (in general, after flashing anything custom like recovery, kernel etc your KNOX flag will be triggered so if you have valid Samsung guarantee - it will be lost) - google it and read more. If you don't like this situation - stop here, otherwise go to point no 2;
2. In order to flash a custom recovery for the first time you need to flash .tar version of it via odin pc app - latest version take from here:
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G900F/XEO/download/G900FXXS1CQD1/130602/
(Look for headline: "Instructions")
Find out more how to flash with odin -> google it and read;
3. Your custom recovery version you can find here (I recommend TWRP):
https://eu.dl.twrp.me/klte/ (use the first file with .tar extension)
Read before about "TWRP odin install method" here:
https://twrp.me/samsung/samsunggalaxys5qualcomm.html
Now you are good to go for custom recovery flashing;
4. When you already have TWRP installed look for a custom Rom of your choice.
You need to decide by your own what you expect from your new rom. Look here for some custom roms and read their descriptions in rom threads:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5 -> look for roms compatible with your phone model inside following subforums: S5 Development (Snapdragon), S5 Original Development or S5 Unified Development.
When you finally choose the rom, install it following installation instructions from the particular rom's thread.
Good luck.
Hi Many40!
Thank you for your reply!
I very much apreciate your tutorial (it's almost impossible to screw up). Will give it a go!
Once again, thanks!!

Twrp for 11?

Hey guys,
Anyone have any info when either unofficial or official twrp is coming for Android 11? I made the mistake of upgrading to 11 from 10 then tried flashing twrp which bricked my phone ( I fixed it, no biggie ). I just really want to flash a custom ROM and I can't find any other custom recovery that will do that and side loading twrp also gives a crashdump error. Unless anyone knows how to downgrade to 10, the the furthest downgrade I've achieved is 11.0.0, once I hit 10.x.x I get either a black screen or crash dump.
It's a lot there, I know. Much appreciated everyone.
Edit: reading more on this forum, I think I found a way to flash a custom ROM on Android 11.. I guess you can side load roms? So I guess I'm going to give that a try. I'm so old school, like back in 2011.
I had the same problem. Im using the Lineage recovery atm an idk why tbh. I think i used it for rooting and for now im only using magisk modules to obtain some featurers.
Sideloading roms is a thing but man i miss those old HTC Hero., HTC Desire times. Last years i was using a P30 pro without root and im so happy to have root again.
Anyway read carefully and have fun. I would love some answers from your experience here.

Most custom roms include all the files needed to flash the entire rom from a batch file. CrDroid for sure, but also Lineage. I'm sure there are more. My issue is not flashing, it's that all important nand backup from TWRP I miss the most. Switching roms is a lot more tedious when you have to re-install everything to revert back to your old setup.
Twrp for 8 and 8 pro may not happen ever, encryption is the problem
TWRP doesn't look promising considering the time that has passed since 8 launch...

Has anyone managed to get any custom ROM to work on a SM-A405FN/DS ?

Hello !
Has anyone actually managed to get any custom ROM to work on a Samsung Galaxy A40 SM-A405FN/DS ?
Mine is currently running the current latest stock ROM (SM-A405FN_2_20211030045838_jg43vcqbiw_fac) downloaded with Frija and I managed to install TWRP from here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-a40-teamwinrecoveryproject-3-6-x-unofficial.4364575/
However, ANY custom ROM that I try to install :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/a11-r-arm64-a40-lineageos-18-1-unofficial-by-kevios12.4335409/
https://sourceforge.net/projects/eurekaroms/files/Samsung/A40/R/lineage/
GSI
maybe others that I forgot
will either bootloop or end up with a black screen.
Looking at the following threads, I'm starting to wonder if the SM-A405FN/DS is custom-ROM-compatible at all ?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/help-my-a405fn-wont-boot-any-custom-rom.4337041/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/samsung-a40-black-screen.4354421/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/galaxy-a40-infinite-loop-impossible-to-turn-on.4337343/
Im running CrDroid 7.13 without any issues with root and gapps. Many custom roms bootloop because of your newer firmware with Bit/SW REV.
Security Patch Lvl. being 4 and those custom rom were built on the older firmware with probably patch level 3. I had installed DotOS fan edition fully working like a year ago, then I tried some new custom roms, which somehow broke my system so the system couldnt start up even after reflashing original boot image, so I reflashed to the newest firmware which was working, then I tried flashing older one and it wouldnt boot, it just shows black screen with error bit/sw 3 boot 4. So you have to flah roms, whose are built on the newer bit level to boot up, the best is CrDroid and now the newest ALT-F4 version 0.0.3 from this forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-oneui-3-1-a40-alt-f4-v0-0-1-updated-2021-12-18.4373813/
I tried it myself and it is the best for this phone, it is fully debloated and pre-rooted stock rom. I also tried CrDroid 8x, everything works for me, but it fells slow and the ram is almost maxed out. I also recommend upgrading to this TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-official-twrp-for-galaxy-a40-a405fn.4025587/
The unofficial twrps had some bugs for me. I hope this helps and happy flashing!
THANK YOU for your comprehensive reply !! I'll give ALT-F4 a try as soon as I can !

Good luck!
Well, luck has not been enough: after updating TWRP to the official version, I tried yesterday to install ALT-F4 0.0.3 but got the exact same result: black screen, need to reflash the stock ROM to make it boot (even to recovery !!) again.
Would you have any other idea ?
EDIT:
I actually tried crDroid in the past, to no avail either.
