Thinking of buying this phone as it's price has fallen a lot. But one thing stops me. - Xiaomi Mi Note 2 Questions & Answers

Soooo.. The price of this phone has come down below 20000 rupees, which is approximately 300 dollars. However, I've noticed it only has a single camera, hence not offering that portrait mode. And that bokeh effect is really mouth watering to me.
I looked around the device forums, but couldn't find a good thread about the status of Google Camera on this phone. So, I thought I'd start one. Does Google Camera work well with this device? Right now, I'm basically deciding between this and the Mi5s Plus, but I'm edging slightly towards this because of that AMOLED panel. Am a sucker for AMOLED. Or if anyone can recommend me some other phone under 300 bucks, I'd appreciate it.
My requirements are a SD 821 processor, AMOLED panel, if possible, and a decent camera. The camera should have that sweet bokeh mode tho. I can make a sacrifice for an okay camera if it has an AMOLED panel. Oh, and minimum screen size should be 5.5 inches.

Well if you don't use MIUI then there exists already a solution (I changed to AEX a few days before) and all GCam modes are working perfectly. Only the quality of lowlight pictures is not so good.

Great pics!
Where did u shoot does?

There is a good thread on Google Camera. And the status is that it is working nearly 100% on some custom ROMs!
I got this phone for under 300$ and for that price having a SD821 and 6GB of ram is a steal.
The main issue on the camera front is bad low light performance. With a huge sensor size of 22.6MP, the pixels are too little to get any decent light inside them. There's a good reason why the Google Pixel stuck to just 12MP.
The google camera does make it a bit better, and with good lighting the 22.6MP resolution really shines!

Yeah, I intend to use an Oreo custom rom, and your photos are absolutely beautiful. If you don't mind, can you send some portrait shots? Both from front and back camera? And how is video recording?

Thank you... These Pics were taken this week in southern germany... neary the castle Neuschwanstein https://www.google.de/maps/place/Alpsee/@47.548953,10.7146399,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x479cf64325f111bd:0xe5e28cdca0ca1360!8m2!3d47.5497149!4d10.721625.
HDR+ is definitively improving pictures, colors are more brilliant without using any additional filter.

Just shot:
Portrait and Focus effect
Different is the depth of focus and the focus picture is darker. About Video: I'm more a photographer and normally using a Sony A7R but i shot a slow motion video from a waterfall and will try to post a link to that Video.

That is very nice footage.. Thank you so much. But the two pictures you sent.. The left is without portrait mode, and the right is with portrait mode, yeah? Does turning portrait mode on make things so dark?

The left one is with portrait mode.... Google cam store these pics into another directory. The right one is with Focus effect which darken the picture. I got the same effect for panorama pictures where you have to increase brightness afterwards.

This is the thread you're looking for, about a working Google Camera!
You can use it not only with aosp ROMs, but also MIUI, in case you go for MIUI EU or you manage to root an official MIUI Global.
I'm using it with Aosp Extended ROM and picture quality is indeed great, much better than MIUI I'd say, Google really did a heck of an amazing job on HDR+, no wonder everyone wants to also have GCam on their phones lol
Like it was already explained, because of the size of the sensor and the tiny size of the pixels, it struggles a bit with low-light, even on MIUI Camera, using manual controls, but for mid to high lights, artificial or natural, it takes amazing shots, GCam really makes Mi Note 2 camera shine <3
Here goes some samples:
First two were taken at about 5-6pm, when sun was starting to set, light source was natural
Second pic in my bedroom, with the lights on, so an artificial source (it was night)
Third pic was taken in my dark (lights off) bedroom, at night, source being only the notebook screen, so also artificial

Forgot to add: do remember the pics are not full quality, since I uploaded them directly to the forum, I'll add them to my Flickr tomorrow, then share the links so they can be seen full quality!

very nice review and good conclusion. well done. keep it up.
did you do any post processing at all on those pictures ? i notice less noise (compared to mine) even on high ISO ! i find lot of noise anything more ISO 200!
BTW my cam firmware ZDFE02.
nope, no PP was done. all straight out of camera..
probably have to do with the brightness of the object u r shooting i guess. indoors with ISO 200 still give quite an amount of noise too.

can you make some comparison of pictures @ poor lighting conditions?
Great post. I know this camera isn't the best one you can get in a smartphone (probably still the iPhone 4S? Or the One X?), but it takes some really good shots, and knowing how to use it properly is all-important.
Thanks!

yes, and no. the One X is not a better shooter when compared to S3. Reason bcz One X is not able to capture as much detail and sharpness as S3. The One X is only capable of getting a cleaner image during low light, thanks to its f2.0 lens. Other than that, S3 is a better shooter.
iPhone 4S on the other hand comes in neck in neck. it wins S3 in indoor shots, thanks to its f2.4 lens. But it's a no match for sharpness and details as well to the S3. the metering on 4S however seems better.
i will provide some links to let u have a look on the comparison shots.

Thanks for those links. Very informative. Reading all this information about my new camera phone, I find I don't have all the new effects under the wand button (even though I've downloaded all available updates), and I don't have the button which lets you take photos during video recording.
Why do you think this might be?

probably yr country hasn't receive the updates yet.. just wait for it..
Thanks for the guide It whas very usefull
Strangely when the update came the camera is getting worse not better , yes more options and modes but a lot of distortion .......
I'm talking about the LFB one....
A small question for those who have moved over to an AOSP rom, does the camera take longer to snap a photo? I ask this because obviously the Samsung Rom was built for the zero shutter lag and I have seen demos of the speed in which it snaps photos. But in some videos I have seen CM9 on the S3, it seems when hitting the button it has a small delay where it stills tries to focus before it snaps.
thanks!
ps: getting my S3 on Monday and debating which rom to use as I probably would like to mess around with the new S3 roms.

yes, the S3's camera is using touchwiz framework.. CM9 is not.. hence the slower performance..

hmm.. i don't really get what u mean by distortion. my understanding of distortion is the lens distortion where u get straight lines becomes curvy like a barrel distortion for wide angle lens, or the fish eye effect for fish eye lens.
in your sample picture, i cant really get the distortion that u mean. did u mean the deviation away from normal exposures? if that's the case, then it is because most of the subjects in your picture are black/dark colours. Hence, the camera's metering is fooled, by thinking you are shooting in low light and hence increases the exposure. it happens to all camera, it's a weakness of digital metering.

Xperia Z2 Photography and First Impressions

Here are the first photos I have taken with the Xperia Z2. This just came in a few hours ago and these are all taken in Superior Auto. None of these have been modified!
More photos here and I will keep adding! https://flic.kr/s/aHsjVXogrK
A few notes:
The Xperia Z2 supports the Tmobile AWS bands in 4G and LTE
There are some bugs that need to be worked out. For example, viewing photos after taking a photo pulls up the keyboard and pictures don't rotate
MOST ANNOYING SO FAR - For some stupid reason, Exchange email requires a password instead of a PIN-code. WTF?! I heard this was an issue with KitKat on Xperia devices
The white version hides fingerprints on the back panel really well!
Auto brightness settings are unpredictable. Sometimes when viewing a picture, it gets dark in the photo app
Damn..they are not very good I was really hoping that Sony would deliver now and I have already pre-ordered this. I don't know what Samsung is doing but they seem to get it right with the camera. unfortunately that's the only thing they are getting right.

No offense to you but I think the pictures are very good for a phone camera. If I were you and want better pictures, I will get a mirrorless camera.
Thanks for the pictures! I looked on the ISO values and I find these pictures to be REALLY nice! I would love to see some daylight shots ASAP!
Great quality without too much compression and artificial sharpening!

I found a way to get around the exchange password bug/annoyance - download Nine (mail app) from the google play store. I am also sure if you use the Stock Kitkat mail app it should also work from here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...4-4-with-gmail-style-ui-and-a-slide-out-menu/

I agree! Big difference...
Now these are starting to show exactly what this camera is capable of. These are more than enough for what your average person needs. If my photos turn out as good as that im more than happy!!
Dont suppose you have a 3yr old child that will not stop moving and just wants to run, and jump, and and roll and dive about to test, as this is my scenerio of taking pictures, and this is where my G2 fails. My pictures end up looking like I painted them, more so indoors, and its when he moves about. I can (in my eyes) get pictures looking almost as good as those with my G2, but conditions need to be perfect.

Lol I wouldn't go ocean swimming with this. That's how I killed my Z1 Compact. It is only waterproof in freshwater, NOT salt water! Thankfully Sony still replaced it with any hassle!
Anyway, the photos are definitely an improvement over the Z1 and Z1 Compact but the photos still come out either too overexposed or darker than I'd like which was an issue on the previous devices. There is an update coming soon so I hope they address that.
Overall the camera does a decent job and I have yet to try them in manual mode. Will keep continue to post photos when I get a chance! It's tough playing with a new toy in a busy work day!

The IMX214 is a very capable sensor, and 1+'s ISP (Qualcomm?) looks quality too. Of course much will depend on speed, reliability and low light, I'll be looking to find more shots.

I certainly hope that with real world conditions it can deliver quality like shown above.
The best part is the 2 sensors that i have noticed that perform beautifully are the IMX179 and IMX214. Obvious 214 will be even better for sure.. Really hope they launch the phone around the different parts of the world soon.
Low light capabilities are incredible, if you search you will understand that how its better than A Nikon D3100 in low light.

A good Sony IMX sensor with a proper lens and image signal processor can bring wonderful images, see iPhone 5S. Which is why I'm puzzled to this day how come Sony's own Xperia Z, Z1 and even some Z2 shots look so over-processed, showing some lens inconsistencies and some SW errors too. Both the Oppo Find 7 and the OnePlus One launch with the new IMX214, and I'm curious how will they fare compared to other Exmors, the Lumias and ISOCELL. So far it is promising.

I agree with you on the Sony Devices part. I have seen that actually. Sony likes to complicate stuff, i really don't know why. Where they can have a easy way to fi thing, they go the other way. Trust me they have 3-4 different apps for the camera. You tell me who in 2014 does that?! lol .. And I read an article, the ISOCELL vs the IMX179 comparison. (Here). The IMX was better
I really need to have a look at the Lumia's though, they have almost DSLR type quality..
The S5 camera is much, MUCH better than the Nexus 5 to be frank. But the IMX214 is a new generation Sony sensor.
aren't you guys a bit scared about the camera app?
i've tried few phones with cyanogen camera app and they were all a lot worst than the original rom camera app (samsung devices especially)
at least this time they are working on their hardware so i really hope it'll be a lot better

Depending on scene and light conditions, today's smartphones can take impressive photos, see some form my S5 review. As far as dynamic range and per pixel sharpness, 1+1 fits right in among the best of Android photography based on what I've seen so far.
Some of these look really good.

Galaxy S6 RAW (DNG) photography discussion

Hi Guys,
Just had a little time to use some DNG capturing cameras (Snap Camera HDR & FV-5) with the latest Galaxy S6 firmware 5.1.1 (XEF CSC) on a S6 32Gb with Sony IMX240 sensor.
For now I can conclude that the S6 RAW shooting capacity is in its infancy period and while Samsung will not yet release a proprietary RAW / DNG capturing module for the camera the rest of available options are pretty basic, not to call them pretty lame.
I have found Snap Camera HDR to be the closest it would get to obtaining, at least, complete non corrupted DNG files. Unfortunately the same camera generates fussy JPEG pretty much most of the time. While Camera FV-5 goes with good quality, fine focused JPEGs there is drama when it comes to DNG. You can only get DNGs if you let the camera focus by itself (upon pressing the release button). If you try to touch-and-focus and the release there will be no DNG captured, but only a JPEG! Weird! And 5 out of 10 times the DNG from the Camera FV-5 is corrupted, thus unusable.
Anyway, here are my initial observations related to what Sammy has been able to capture in the RAW / DNG files, and the treatment of such files in Adobe Lightroom / Photoshop:
THE GOOD
- quite a good dynamic range for such a small and "saturated" (with pixels )sensor.
- excellent highlights recovery that is pretty helpful with the S6 tendency to overexpose a bit every time. I feel, and I am going to try, that eTTR is quite an option for high contrast / contre-jour situations where more details could be recovered from the shadow areas.
- splendid shadow recovery even when the shot was not taken specifically with this approach in mind.
- good default micro contrast and overall excellent contrast (little sensitive to "S-curve" treatment)
- good scaling for upping the "whites" with not so destructive results (not huge blown highlights)
- good non destructive sharpening up to +70, with 0.7-0.8 radius, masking 50 to 80.
- excellent (well here is a matter of taste, don't shoot me!) monochromatic noise, usable in decent lighting condition up to ISO 800, and easily reduced to an acceptable level without actually destroying the details. Things get a bit nasty where the light is not so much decent and objects tend to lose contour sharpness with driving down the noise levels.
- perspective correction is easily manageable.
THE NOT SO GOOD
- color temperature (WB) is not a total miss but definitely tends to go a bit (very slightly!) magenta-ish. Pretty easy to correct with minimal delta from the perceived / recognized WB at shooting time.
- chromatic aberration exists and tends to be quite visible (specifically in the high contrast / metallic scenes) but it's excellently defringed in Lightroom.
- good vibrance by default although a boost would nonetheless enhance the shot a bit (again, I might be subjective)
Here is a link to 2 DNG files for your own voyeuristic pleasure and pixel peeping and the same 2 resulting JPEGs from Lightroom, based on my approach.

I will get back with a deeper analysis when my free time allows me. This time I will try to focus on the quality differences between the S6 default camera JPEG shooing (which so far is amazing) and the results one could get from messing around with the DNG files.
Thanks for the effort buddy!
whats wrong with the stock camera? can't you still capture in .dng isn't that the whole purpose of the 5.1.1 update or am i wrong?

1. Unfortunately the stock camera does not yet let you capture DNG files. Only third party apps allow for that.
2. Try to dial this code *#34971539# and choosechoose "

I think also it deserves a thred ... I think we need to give them time to make it better and then to use it ... I still can't test it as there is no 5.1.1 for Croatia ... But I am going to as soon as it comes ...
By my opinion it had to big of an impact on people then ram management ... Which is strange ... But OK ...
I hope for onec they hold something to really make it better ... But on the other hand I think only now we will see the difference between Sony sensor and isocell ... As in auto there could be no ...but in raw ... Maybe there will be ...

Guys I am curios if any of you, with an ISOCELL sensor, has received the 5.1.1 update and is willing to perform some tests, maybe upload some DNG samples. I personally think that all the fuss about the Sony vs ISOCELL sensor capabilities is just a creepy discussion. I have seen so far maybe 1 % of all the complaints coming from people with a real photography calling, people who actually produce good quality photography. The rest are just 'professional worriers' that even if they had the sensor they actually admire in their S6s would still produce garbage. No intention to inflame anyone but just to focus your attention on what it actually matter: the work of art you produce with whatever camera, sensor, lens, etc. [emoji6]

Good news from another 3rd party camera
Hi guys,
I have just received some encouraging news from A Better Camera (another 3rd party camera on Google Play). Their current release does not yet support the RAW/DNG capture on S6 but their product is a very good, stable and full of feature one. So I took some time to write them back for support for our beloved S6. Conversation below:
QUESTION
Hi there! Since Galaxy S6 is now (with firmware 5.1.1) full Camera2 API compliant (RAW capturing included) do you think it would be possible to implement RAW/DNG capture for it too? I have just bought your app an I like it a lot (simplicity, intuitive, functions, etc) but I would very much like to have access to DNG shooting as well. Thanks for your reply.
THEIR ANSWER
We're waiting for update on our device and will enable these functions. + you will have super mode + all capture will be much faster...

Thanks a lot for your detailed post and for providing DNG samples. Can you please upload some low light DNG samples with a higher ISO ?
Looking at your 2 DNG files vs the JPEG you shared, I can see that the JPEG are cropped or have some perspective correction applied. Would it be possible to also upload the out of camera JPEG files? I would like to check if the in camera distortion correction is also applied to the DNG file. Thanks!
With French 5.1.1 i cannot shoot raw pictures

Have you activated "camera2 api" in the tab "Other"? After doing this, go back to the" Photo" tab and you may then see the dng option.

How to make Mi MIX camera digestible

Hi folks,
i wanted to share some of my insights from 2 days of usage of Mi Mix. As for most, camera was biggest letdown. I knew it was bad, but actual experience exceeded all expectations After some digging and thanks to some threads in xda forum i found a way to make quite decent photos with little sacrifice.
So few things first:
- I'm on rooted LineageOS with Camera API2 unlocked (to be honest i didn't have to unlock it - i suppose it is unlocked with LineageOS? )
- As some noticed before, the hardware isn't that bad, it's software that spoils photos with ugly postprocessing in most cases.
- I'm using Snap Camera HDR - i tried most of software in Google Play and only in it found something like Low Light Mode - if someone know software with similar feature - pls let me know .
So what i did is basically turning off all useless postpro in Snap Camera (sharpenning, denoising, post-processing, anti-banding) and enabled Low Light Mode in all photos . From what i understand i takes series of photos and compare them to make one clean photo. You can choose how many frames to take. More you take the better picture you will get but it will also take more time to process. The processing time is biggest letdown of this method. You can't take another photo during processing so burst mode won't work. I found 5 to be best compromise - it enhances photo noticeably and takes only 1-3s to process. If u can spare more time between photos u can crank it up to 32 - with that count i had really impressive results even with ISO around 1500-2000 but the processing can take 10-30s. Another letdown as you can probably guess is that you can have some issues with moving objects - the darker it gets, the more blurred will they be (slower shutter for every frame).
Now to main dish, examples
All photos taken in 16Mpx without flash or any tripod, all taken form hand for real life comparison. As photo is processed in Snap Camera the jpg lose photo metadata so i only write that data for stock camera, for Snap Camera i write how many frames was set for Low Light Mode. I know it's not very scientific but i take photos in both softwares almost at the same time, in same light conditions and on basic auto modes.
Stock camera on left, Snap Camera on right - I'm posting 100% crops, ill post full pictures if there will be some demand

2. [ISO 1250 1/17s] [5 LLM] - some fine details - fur, fabric, wood texture in mediocre light
3. [ISO 1600 1/17s] [5 LLM] - small details in mediocre light
4. [ISO 160 1/33s] [32 LLM] - outdoor in good light - i took more frames to show some extra foliage details
5. [ISO 6400 1/15s] [32 LLM] - most hardcore example, very bad indoor lighting. Snap Camera algorithm made some wired border around Marshall logo, but apart form that great job.
I hope my post will help some of you with Mi Mix camera, please post your own experiences with camera - maybe there is even better solution for our phones

Big Thx, i will most certainly try it:good:
I'm considering getting this device, but the camera is the main thing holding me back (besides price for last year's SoC...)
Does the Google HDR camera make this acceptable? I don't necessarily need the BEST camera, but I'd prefer relatively fast rate of capture and at least mediocre detail. The initial reviews of the device's camera make it seem like utter trash.
Also consider I want to root the device & install something Lineage based, most devices you sacrifice camera quality when you go this route (because of lack of API 2 / hardware source).

Perhaps but see my above post. Anyway it's not a ''wow'' app, just saying.
Received the Nightly OTA today, updated to V9.1.1.0 . Now I am on Nougat, the OP5 port linked in this thread works now , other versions of the google camera get installed but will close immediatly. Just tested it in my room and can't say that I see an improvement, maybe when tested outside at daylight. But I use the google camera anyway because I'm using immersive mode + dpi changes which make stock camera working less stable.
Hi. I updated yesterday to V9.1.1.0 via OTA. I tried the OP5 camera and is does a better job in lower light and image stays in better focus then stock camera. Is the OP5 the same as the google HDR camera. If not, is there a version of google hdr camera that works on Mi Mix without root? Also is there there a way to turn on some type of optical stabilization on stock camera. If I hold it really still when snapping pic the image is a lot sharper. It's actually pretty good. Just not practical to take pictures that way.
EDIT: OK. I guess no OIS on Mix...
I got my mi mix a bit more than a month ago coming from a OP3 and I was shocked by the awful camera of the mi mix. Sorry, I have no other words for it.
The op5 APK seems to make it digestible, but it's still not great. I know that for a GREAT camera I should've picked a different phone, but I didn't expect it to be like this.
