Extremely slow storage - laggy performance - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Ok so for the last few months I have been experiencing major slow downs on my A1.
I was on the January Oreo update when one day the phone started lagging when opening apps or browsing inside apps. I could not track down the problem so I did a factory reset. The first few factory resets made the phone very slow, with even the welcome screen crashing. I flashed the latest nougat rom using the mi flash tool and after a few tries and factory restores it got a bit stable. Now I am in the december nougat build and, even tho it is still slower than it was, it is somewhat usable. I did find a thread here about how the problem could be the eMMC dying, so I started doing some benchmarks.
To my surprise, the storage is extremely slow, like HDD slow... I have the 64GB model. Here is a screenshot of AndroBench. Is there anything I can do or is it just a hardware problem and I need a replacement?
Thanks

I made a bench for you, you can compare this, it really looks slow on your side. Did you ever did a complete wipe of your phone and a fresh clean install ??? I'm using the 64gb model too, with the 8.1 beta leak.

I did indeed. I have done many wipes from inside android and even from the bootloader. I've also done clean installs on both oreo and nougat. It does look like a hardware problem to me, which is not good, since it's my only phone :crying:

Use your warranty before it's dying completely.

I have the same problem , everything was working fine. One day suddenly all apps started crashing, i thought it was probably some malaware or some app.
I flashed all except storage, factory reset but to no avail. The UI crashes all the time , even flashing via fastboot takes so much of time.
I had unlocked bootloader. I just hope my phone is in warranty??
any updates on your phone mate?

I don't really have any updates. I am trying to convince the people I got it from that this is a problem and I need a replacement, but they seem hesitant. I am still using it, and its slower every day. Use your warranty as fast as you can. I tried to do many things, including wiping everything, every partition, and also doing a disk check and everything. I have no idea if that's a fixable problem. And I am surprised I can't find any more information on this, as it looks like it happens to more people.

same issue here. last month it started to crash and did a factory reset. at first i thought it might be my sdcard but took it out and same slowly - close to unusable. apps constantly crashes now and then. restarting phone is extremely slow. keyboard and scroll lags. this is not custom rom, i am using official android 8.0.0 from xiami.

Did you try to trim the memory with fstrim app? Maybe it's a trim issue?

Better use your warranty to replace eMMC ASAP

I am pretty sure android 5+ does trim automatically. Maybe not that often, but I was forced to use the phone for over 2 months with the slow storage, in which I did several factory resets as well as installed custom roms to try and make it usable for the time being. No matter what, benchmarks were always the same. I would expect android to trim the storage at least once during that time period.

I'm convinced Xiaomi have unintentionally slowed the phone down and made it more laggy in recent updates. Like you, the phone can be mega laggy sometimes. Or I click on browser links and it takes 2 seconds to respond. Other times the phone flies. It's very inconsistent. I think Xiaomi have very poor quality control when testing their rom updates.

2 seconds? those are rookie numbers Opening apps on my A1 can take 10-20 seconds for apps to fully open. Especially Spotify, takes around 1 minute to open and allow me to use it without it lagging like its about to crash. I don't think xiaomi is messing with it as much as you might think. Maybe you have other things slowing down your phone. The problem I am discussing here is a hardware problem and not a software one. You can check for yourself if you are suffering from it by running the Androbench benchmark and comparing your results to the mine.

Actually Google play music usually takes 15 seconds to open when first opened after reboot.

Off topic: I had Galaxy 3 back in days (2010 to 2012), Just want to thank you for your Rom and other project for Galaxy 3. Hope you are doing great, Thankyou for you support, God bless you.

So, have the same problem... I bought a phone in the summer from another owner. On standard ROM (8.1), the phone lagged and freezing. Full factory reset or wiping in twrp didn't solve the problem. Tried all the custom, but lags appeared after a while. The decision was to switch to treble-rom, freezing for the most part are gone. Then I tried to flash in test-point mode with disassembly the phone, but freezing remained. Now I formatted memory in f2fs and install pixel experience 9.0 with moun kernel and lagged and freeze are gone. Apps open quickly and i didn't noticed other problem. But in Bench I have similar slow speed results...

humm is there anyway to identify the memory controller/manufacturer/type? this may help to identify the problem

1. Dial the following code to get service menu * # * # 64663 # * # *
2. Tap the first item, version information
3. Scroll down to emmc
Mine says Samsung as in the screenshot.

Strange behavior of the smartphone. After installing PE and formatting in f2fs, the laggy and freezing really disappeared. Previously, during this time, something would definitely appear...

[HOWTO] Stress Test your I9000 internal SD for defects in Froyo 2.2

This guide is mostly aimed to the Galaxy S i9000m owners, but it's also good for all other International SGS models as well.
The SGS family of phones were introduced July/August 2010, this give us a little bit over 6 months left of warranty, before your warranty expires, make sure the internal SD is working properly.
Upgrade to stock 2.2 as soon as possible, see if your phone can survive a month on 2.2 under heavy stress usage.
There are many LEGIT ways to test the internal SD without voiding the warranty:
Stock un-rooted methods:
Copying / Deleting large collection of music and/or videos to the internal SD
Install like 300+ apps from Android Market, then massively "Update All" in Android Market <<<<<<<<<< Most efficient test for unrooted
see if you can install any new apps from market, after the 300+
see if you can install any new apps from the External SD, if the internal SD is gone, or dying, it will get stuck on "installing....." forever
Recording 720p Videos with the camera app, until the memory runs out, repeat several times until you feel it's safe <<<<<<<<<< easy and efficient
Root required methods:
Full system Backup/Restore using Titanium Backup or similar Apps <<<<<<<<<< Best Method
mine died trying to copy the appmanager and titanium backup directories from my saved copy on external sd back to sd.. a few minutes after copying they dissappeared.. don't need to be rooted for that.
I'd like to know if anyone had their new/returned SGS with JL2 die that was NOT rooted and is completely stock. Anyone?
I have not had any issues with my SGS i9000M as of yet (knock on wood) and you will see the updates I have done since I purchased it on August 30th, 2011. I had no issues with it on JG9, JH2 (original), JH2 (bootload fix), JK4 (First official FroYo) or JL2 (Newest FroYo update) and I updated to JL2 on December 23rd or 24th so almost 2 weeks ago.
Man... I KNOCK ON WOOD so much hoping I have been one of the lucky ones!!!

I've just got mine from the Bell store where I left it on Dec 17. It's the same old from the very first batch phone. They just re-flashed it with JL2. I'm not going to root it for now so I'll try all legit methods to stress the internal storage. I was thinking, what about re-flashing JL2 using a registry hack (setting an older version) with Kies after installing 300+ apps? That should probably push it to the limit.
Install 300+ apps? That's like a day of work, don't you think?

that's not accurate, flashing the ROM leaves the rest of the internal SD untouched
you are only messing around with the partition and format, that doesn't really kill the internal SD, it just messes it up, it gets corrupted, but it can be fixed
real internal SD death are not fix-able
You are correct, I was simply being a little sarcastic as many believed it was odin messing up the phones.

unfortunate, but true
too many people believes flashing is what kills the internal SD
simplest method which unknowingly sped up the death of my first phone was using the galaxy S to record HD video to the internal card when I was on vacation.
Or, you could just leave it plugged into a charger and leave HD video recording on. My phone died 1 day after recording about 1 hour of HD video (at various times) on the internal SD.

I received my phone yesterday, making a 2 and a half hour commute to pick it up. I am performing this stress test on my phone at the moment. I hope it survives.
What is the indication of having passed this test? Would I have to repeat the hour of video recording how many time? Daily over the course of a month?
I need to read up on the indicators of what constitutes a failure, besides the catastrophic kind. Any offers of advice?
Jan 8 2011 10:00 am Update:
Finished recording 1 hour of video. Repeating to further stress test. Hopefully time will tell quickly if there are any problems or not.
11:23 second hour of video completed. I will try to continue doing this cycle of recording and deleting through out the day, unless one of the experienced posters thinks this is inadvisable.
5:10 pm third hour of video complete. Decided to not delete, but fill the card up as much as possible.
6:11 pm fourth hour of recording complete, this video was recorded without deleting the third hour recording.
6:36 pm Fifth recording never reached an hour. Got a maximum recording size reached message at 20:54.
Also received an additional warning ' not enough memory available', which stopped me from doing anymore video recording. Well restart phone and try continuing.
7:25 pm sixth attempt was stopped at 40:50, along with the memory error. Tried clearing ram to see if it helped, but it did not. Restarting phone.
7:39 pm cannot attempt a 7th video. Despite restarting the phone, the memory write message persists.
Will delete videos to see if this changes things.
9:05 pm one hour video recorded, after deleting previous videos, no memory error.
10:14 pm reached 56:56 before I got the maximum recording size message.
11:14 pm was able to record another video without deleting. Recorded to 57:45.
12:32 pm hmmm . Checked my sd card memory. Only 833 MB left. Deleted all the videos, but the card is still only showing 833 MB of space left.
12:38 restarted phone. almost all the free space is now being recognized (13.02 of 13.03 GB)
Can any one interpret these results?
Jan 11 5:16 pm I got my first force close, using the xda application... maybe I will run some more stress tests.

I tried a few times and my phone says recording failed after a few seconds... is this normal or is it a sign of a dying phone?
How cool (or sad) would it be...
If you are physically at the Samsung Service Centre yourself to pick up the phone and you perform some sdcard benchmark alike and break it on the spot
Or
You'll at a Bell Corp store and kill the sdcard on the spot too, than tell them that you want a new phone, and you break that crap again, and over and over...
go through their entire stock of galaxy to fine that one rare survivor phone.
absolutely crazy.
i hope one of those dualcore phones get released within Q1 fast.
May I suggest a another torture option?
Mount your internal sdcard connected to your PC.
Than run & repeat disk benchmark, do some disk defrag (which isn't recommended for flash type of drives, that is why you do NOT defrag SSD).
Or do a Full format over and over,
May ways to do things that you should do to a flash type of drives. (but should not die from it but shorten the life of it by xxx amount of hours of it's life. You'll probably have upgraded your phone few times more before it really dies)

Axon 7 (Official ROM) known BUGS

I use phone (a2017g, V1.2.0B.09) 20 days.
I have noticed these bugs in ROM:
1) Mobile signal stops presenting in battery stats graph,

}
2) Dolby periodically change my castom profile to music or turn off,
3) Double tap is not reliable,
4) In camera app for front camera, beauty mod is default and can't change.
List of bugs are not significant.
what bugs did you notice?
Not necessarily bugs, but annoyances;
Bluetooth always off after restart
Bluetooth won't auto connect to paired device
Live Wallpaper changes back to default without setting change
I don't know what people do to their phones but mine doesn't suffer these bugs. Selfie mode works normally, Dolby seems to work ok but I actually switch it off mostly. Double tap is good, BT auto connect usually works, maybe sometimes problems with this are partly to do with the audio device? I usually don't want to wait for auto connect as I have a lot of paired devices and will just go in and do it manually but if I leave it, it will work.
If I had all these bugs, I would back up data and reset the phone.
Sometimes my battery graph/percentage freezes and does not go down with use. Happened to me twice in the 2 months plus I own it.
But the worst bug is this phone kills SD cards.

Ideally, reset should not be the first resort to a problem but the last resort. Imagine if my Windows PC requires a format every time there is a problem, I will get no work done.
Having said that, do you know if reset will solve the SD card killing problem that some of us have?

Of course this is what we ment by doing a clean install if problems don't go away or reoccur.
Btw, resetting my phone and doing a clean install costs me some minutes. A pc is quite something different
No, unfortunately I do not think resetting this phone will resolve the sd-killing issue.
For example I have 3 apps running. When I tap recent apps it shows those 3 apps then I tap "clear all" it says "apps were closed" and shows the amount of memory cleared when I tap recent apps again it shows all same those apps again!!??
Whenever I close them by X icon on top right then it works but "clear all" never works
Anyone same situation?

Oh boy! Should I upgrade to Oreo or wait?

Apperantly the update to Oreo has come around. How stable is it though, should I wait.
What's your experience?
From a few hours of work with the updated phone i do not see any problems. Performance is the same like on nougat and i am yet to see any bugs. If you like to work with new tch like me - go and get the update. If you are more cautious - wait for a few days and see the feedback before updating.
go ahead buddy, its good, no bugs, same as it was on nougat, 3-4 hours SOT..
Boy, we already waited too long, I just hit update
Are you on 2.21.401.1??
Same Sh1t... Different Day
I updated on my single SIM and there are no problems. Battery life is the same (around 3 hours of SOT). On nougat I had problems with fingerprint reader lately (when turning on the screen, sensor didn't work - when I turn off smartlock, it worked) but now on Oreo there is no problems. Also, automatic "do not disturb" didn't work (worked just first time after reboot) and on Oreo it works.
So I've upgraded and no problems so far.
I didn't reset or anything, just upgraded.
Notification badges however don't really work for any app except for some that came with the ROM.

well, the phone didnt have any major bugs or alot of stuff that are not working i did notice a major hit in bench marks like geek bench the single core score droped to nearly half of what it was before oreo lol but i managed to solve this by unlocking the bootloader which did do a reset for may phone and made it as fast as brand new a normal factory reset from the settings didnt change a thing so ya you can try factory resseting but it didnt work for me. another thing is that when rotating the phone while watching a video on youtube or something there is a bug where the phone takes about 5 to 6 seconds to respond that can be fixed by just restarting your phone . it is a really stupid bug. oh yeah and one more thing if you open the camera app and then press the home button the second screen will still have the camera zoom slider on it until you close the app also there alot of instances where the phone goes from the app to home screen without an animation but again nothing too big all of them are small little bugs

Same for me geekbench is like nougat
I think it's safe to say the update on single SIM is much better than the one for Dual SIM, right.
My Ultra performs now much better, almost never stutters, consistant speed, and normal battery life. I hoped the google camera worked better on oreo, but it is still slow and unstable. i think the camera 2 implementation is not perfect. tested the gcam ports also on the old lg g5 and there it is almost like on a nexus/pixel.
All in all i'm very satisfied with the update, especially the improved outdoor visability is a nice surprice. but it came way too late and a half year without security patches is a nogo. hope tehy will come now at least every third month again.
So what about the badge notifications for Oreo?
What apps don't get them right?

After months of being told complete nonsense, they proactively called me, troubleshot and without notice I checked again and there it was. This could be a TS Procedure, however, see attached Screenshots and I believe everyone will see it Feb 2-4th. My experience as one of the initial transfers has been anything but smooth. However, I commend their Customer Service and their Tech SUpport for owning the issue and this may have saved me as a customer. Mind you I will absolutely not buy from them again, however, I will sell this oneplus 8 5g that is unlocked for the 8t/8Pro or 9 Pro unlocked and stick with them for the outstanding customer service!
AOD doesn't have the all day function like global does, modem cant switch from 5g to 4g without a reboot or airplane mode toggle, wifi calling works when if "feels" like it.
@esjames so just to confirm are you saying that you're having issues with the automatic transition from 5G to 4G or vice versa? Cuz that would be a very big problem for me especially since I am 99% of my time on my home Wi-Fi and have been missing calls ever since doing the upgrade. Can you confirm that if I do do a global conversion will that result in error and if so do you happen to have a guide on how to convert from Android 11?
Thank you in advance.
It doesn't appear to have AOD? that's the one feature I wanted. Ugh
I went and got the iphone 12 pro yesterday, and yes "all day" aod isnt there and 4g-5g switching works only sometimes. Got tired of it dropping signal. Global firmware doesnt have stand alone 5g but at least it didnt drop signal.
Missing features aside (it seems several releases back from what I'm seeing in OnePlus' forums, where several devices are on 11.0.3.3 and 11.0.5 is in beta testing) how is it overall? Stability, battery life, Android Auto, etc?
Most says beta 5 is more stable than the stable release. The global release is pretty good. Battery life kinda sucks though
Are you guys having issues with YouTube and twitch mini screen hiding on the bottom of the screen and not appearing on recent apps?
I just updated. I hope I don't regret this

I like with the exemption of YouTube and maps mini floating screen disappearing
I'm not too thrilled with the update. Very laggy and buggy, wiped cashed data and it seems to have helped.... Slightly. Missing some text after a little while I'll get 3-4 all at the same time. I'm going to unlock and throw rhe international version on it very soon.
My first test of Android Auto in the truck was not great. At first everything seemed fine, but it got extremely slow after checking out 3 or 4 apps. I'll clear cache on related apps and see if that helps. The phone itself has been fine so far.
So first real test of Google navigation on AA today, and it wasn't good. When I searched for a place and selected directions, it showed three options, but the routes were not highlighted on the selection screen or while navigating, no matter how many times I closed the app and re-did the search. Finally I gave up and used Waze, which worked fine. I tried Google Maps again partway through, and that time it showed the route, but I cancelled it. When I got where I was going and unplugged the phone, it was very warm and there was a temperature warning - actually it said device temperature was back to the safe range. It's never done that before. Also the phone still had a persistent navigation notification shown that didn't want to go away. I am really disappointed right now. Normally I would also stream music while navigating, but didn't this time, and it still made the phone really warm on top of the other issues.
I don't care for the update either. Has crazy lag with screen transitions. Android Auto works fine for me. Freezes up when phone screen is left on. Turn off phone screen and android auto is responsive again. Did notice the missing navigation route issue once or twice. Forgot how I solved it but it's working now.
Otherwise just got the update yesterday. I will also say I think the maps issue is the actual maps app. Mine did it on android 10 not 11.
Also keyboard has round corners now?
Ever since I've updated there has been a problem with texting and I'm hoping someone might have an answer.
After I updated I noticed I could receive group text but my one on one text don't arrive (and I have timed it 15 20 minutes later.
I tried different texting apps (I use Textra) but nothing changed.
I did a factory reset and nothing changed
I called T Mobile and replaced sim card and after talking to technicians - nothing changed
I've changed settings and texting apps again - nothing changed.
Can anyone help?
I cannot get one on one text or app verification codes quick enough to install certain apps but I can still receive group maeesages quickly.
Am I the only one have trouble connecting in FlashMode? No matter what I've tried, debugging on, debugging off, the "Adb devices" command doesn't see a da** thing. I could've sworn I had connect to this phone with the android 10 version.
BTW, I had to laugh, 'cause it took me a minute to find the Flashmode option in the new Power menu. They sort of hid it.
Just wondering because I've been trying all afternoon. Probably just something stupid I'm doing but I gotta get this going so I can debloat thing. This rom is so loaded with bloatware, it's crazy. After I got finished paring down all the Sprint apps that were on my LG V50 it weighed about 5lb less and this one's is way worse.

nope. just february patch with bug fixes.
Still no AOD, pathetic. Who do we complain to - Tmobile or OnePlus?
Things have been better since I cleared the cache from the recovery menu. I don't remember the phone charging at only 1A in the car before. Seems to be the same whether I use Android Auto through the radio's USB port or my car charger. I guess the OnePlus 8 doesn't support Quickcharge?

OnuPlus 7T pro 5g Mclaren T-Mobile issues need to be solved

Using an oneplus 7t pro 5g Mclaren since February this year..i am not a power user..when OS11 update came i was so excited to upgrade and after upgrading my peaceful life with the device has become a nightmare..i am trying to point out the problems i have been facing..
1.the google app simply doesn't wanna work 99% of the time..(since OS10) i have use chrome for normal google search..
2.'ok google' or 'hey google' never did respond to me doesnt matter how many times i retrain my voice.
3.smart lock features doesnt work.
4.the battery capacity has been shown 3300 mAh on many device checking apps including benchmarking ones where it's supposed to show 4085 mAh as written on the box..besides that my phone battery backup forced me to put my belief on the 3300 mAh capacity..since OS11 update it has become worse just.
5.Oneplus cameras dont have that great reputation but i was happy with the shutter performance and the pics..OS11 destroyed that feeling with laggy camera app and bad performances..protrait mood fights hard to locate the face/object and 70% time gets defeated..theres obviously focus issues as well..but the 1 sec lag after pressing shutter is just unbearable..last 2/3 months i have been avoiding taking pics on my phone
6.Ghost Lock has made my device so pathetic that the phone itself wanna die i think..it doesnt matter gaming or making a simple call ghost locks have been happening all the time..phone hangs 10% of the time after it happens...minimum 5 times a day.
7.some third party apps arent working properly also which are very useful one's..like vanced/quick video recorder etc..
8.in developer options the Bluetooth LDAC options have been disabled.i bought an oneplus bullets Z along with the phone but later was surprised to see that it only supports AAC and another common codec no aptX or anything.i dont understand when i connect this headphone with a Xiaomi MI 9T all the codecs are available to choose on that device but not on my phone! The codecs arent available on the phone itself or the Bluetooth device i am confused.
9.i dont know what to say about the battery backup.never felt an urge to buy a power bank but now i do.i am not also a heavy gamer dont play PUBG or Asphalt. Games like Rise of empire or clash royale drains the battery such fast that my 3 years old Nokia 6.1 sometimes laughs at it.
10.heating issue isnt absent either..i only use the cover given with the phone when not at home..phone gets heated up with simple gaming sometimes unbearably during charging..i have been noticing also the charging time isnt like it used to be..20/30 minutes more ots taking for a full charge.
11.bluetooth device gets disconnected on calls specially when talking over social apps.and on some social media apps it doesnt wanna even get connected
Again i am not a super user of android..never tried rooting any device..this one is my first OnePlus device. what are my options to get rid of these problems? Specially to solve the problem with the camera i am seriously thinking of downgrading it to OS10 stable but i dont know that will fix camera lag at least or not..any suggestions to get rid of all/most of the problems written above will be heavenly..thanks for having patience to read all through
My current build number..

Wow, you must have spent (wasted) a long, long time typing that...
As for 4) that's a bug in most apps. The battery capacity is 4085maH
As for everything else, have you tried a factory reset and not restoring data/backup of app data from Google?
I don't have a single one of those issues on OOS 11.
If factory reset doesn't work, you can revert back to OOS10 using the MSM tool, or sell the phone. Do you think a) OnePlus reads these forums or b) actually cares at all?
Thanks for ur reply..actually it took a little time to write but u must have noticed i managed to make it funny for myself
No i didnt try that..u r suggesting me to factory reset and then not restoring the backup data and start fresh?

Yes, exactly. Just try it and see if it works. Don't have much to lose by trying. Considering I don't have a single issue with OOS11 (and specifically none of the ones you mentioned), I think you have some apps or more specifically app data that didn't take the upgrade to OOS11 well and are causing havoc on your device. Just factory reset, don't let Google restore apps (sms, call log, pictures are fine to restore), and see if you still have issues.

I bought the McLaren when it first came out. I loved the device and it worked flawlessly. I saw no need to sweat rooting the device and wasn't an option back then anyway. Even now it doesn't seem as clean as the earlier android phones I've rooted and owned but the world changes.
Unfortunately, I cracked my screen and was sent a refurb. I started dealing with sound corruption issues shortly afterwards. I never gave up on the phone and I knew there was some kind of conflict with newer Google updates my device pretty early on. I did MANY factory resets(erase all) and cleared cache both individually and as well as through recovery and it would only temporarily fix my issue. Then it would come back on it's own without any changes made by me.
At first, I had a lot of success uninstalling updates for the main Google app, clearing cache and data (sometimes resetting system app preferences and then rebooting into recovery where I would clear cache again and reboot. That worked for a while but as Google and other Google services received updates it became more difficult to fix using this method. By the time 11 dropped and the issue got worse, I was convinced I must have gotten either A) a bad egg or B) it was my fault and I turned the phone off in the middle of an install causing some kind of corruption that persisted through the updates somehow. The truth though may be somewhere between a phone that someone returned for a good reason and the increasingly more insidious nature of Google Apps. I was eventually defeated, made too many changes that the phone didn't agree with, got the Qualcom Error and was faced with either getting a new phone or seeking aid through a Community I've always respected.
Since then I've tried clean installs of the more recent RoMs but the issue was persistant. If it wasn't for the fact that the phone's speaker and mic would work again after a clean install (offline no SiM) but then get corrupted again within 5 minutes, I think I would have assumed a hardware issue only (still might be a bad egg on some level).
I decided to go back further, this time installing 10.0.36, which I guessed might be far enough back to a time before any issues and is a bit lighter (around 10 preinstalled apps lighter not including system). To my dismay (again, still offline) the mic and speaker corruption/conflict was still present. I began making one change at a time (mostly targeting anything mic or Google related) and it became clearer over the last few days that it was definitely Google and Google's zombie-like behavior to change settings back on it's own. I think that company went way past the point of overreach and intrusion a long time ago.
What happens is that ALL of the Google apps have (modify system settings) checked by default and I believe all it takes is one of them to have that access to let it's Google buddies come back to the party.
I would love to know where the conflict actually lies on a deeper level but that's probably a bit out my bubble of current knowledge and I just really need to have a working phone more than answers atm.
Now I'm praying that dropping in my Sim and signing in to the real owner (I seriously overpaid for a phone that's mostly not mine) of my phone doesn't somehow give Google access to some backup plan to allow itself free reign all up in my settings again. If it does, someone in charge of the google might be getting a 5G McLaren shoved into places that see less sun...in my imagination of course.

The problem isn't Google, it's OnePlus not following Google's mandated instructions on how to properly initialize and configure a new device that will be running A10, because they (OnePlus) rushed it to market. They didn't set up the partition tables properly to work with the new dynamic partitioning in A10 for a start.
A10 and A11 are part of Project Mainline which allows Google to update important parts of the phone transparently without having to wait for an OTA from the manufacturer and/or carrier. But because OnePlus didn't properly set up the device for A10, the transparent updates don't go over very well...and there is no way to fully undo them even with the MSM tool.
The blame solely lies with OnePlus as no other devices launched with A10 have this issue. OnePlus didn't follow the "basic" instructions available for the entire planet to see on Google's Android dev website. Google's only mistake was certifying this piece of crap.
