Camera Quality in april update. - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Am I the only one who is getting worst images, cannot focus or even getting blurry photos? Everywhere, from instagram to stock camera, even I tried gcam, still blurry photos. I'm on april build. I need to restart every time when I want to take a pic, it works for awhile and then again goes to blur.

I have yet to install that april update
- Did you root ?
- Had magisk installed ?
- Enabled Camera2 API persistant ?
if yes then by magisk or adb shell terminal / property files ?

Nope.
Never rooted, Enabled Camera2 api using rootless method and no! Never tried magisk on this device.

Have you tried reflashing the ROM?
And then try clicking with and without Magisk and other mods and cameras?

Me too since january update to Pie. It's a common bug since Pie update. i'm on stock , no root nor bootloader unlock. That's a pity, camera is not usable since January, cannot autofocus nor manual focus . Only camera 2x seem not to be affected. (already tried factory reset) This topic is popular on the web , but xiaomi seem not to listen us. So sad , didnt want to buy a new phone. I was really satisfied with mi A1 since 2017.

Its okay if you use gcam as you mentioned, but I dont know why it does in stock cam or instagram. Because when using stock ROM, in my case you can't take full res photos with gcam, u need to take 16:9 photos as there works autofocus.

So we have someone replying 1 year later that he got same issue... last year was post Oreo, now we are post Pie, there has been 1 update per month.... not sure all this is related?

Anniversary bug. Good to see Xiaomi keeps dates sacred

Just used oreo, mi a1 on pie is trash, oreo has no issues and you don't need Android 9 anyway

didn't feel the need of custom rom since this bug. which one you advice ?
ps : i know its a dumb question , but i'm not modding since two years (i was on nexus 5 and it was easier ). i have unlocked bootloader now . what's next ? Can't find an easy guide to flash twrp .

Tbh, I've noticed it too. I'm on PE CAF and after flashing April modem patch, the camera won't focus on touch. I'm lost.

I tried using the stock oreo rom after the pie update, but kept facing this issue- https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/help/secondary-sim-issues-downgrading-stock-t3911288
Did you face the same issue?

[SOLVED][request] Mi A1 Camera APK from Nougat latest December update or even older

Hi friends and seniors after upgrading to Oreo the blur feature (portrait mode) on my camera seems to be less effective than in nougat. I therefore request everyone who is still on nougat to kindly provide the apk so i can compare. I would be really grateful. Please mention the build also on which u are (security update).
Oreo has been the worst update that I got in this phone, After using half an hour i found out so many bugs, xiaomi certainly released this just for the sake of releasing it. so much of battery drain omg. not good for average user.
Kindly provide the apk if anyone has. Please mention the build also on which u are (security update).
Here i am attaching the full camera folder for u. Its based on latest December security patch. Have fun...
Well I don't have any issues. Potrait works well like Nougat. I did a clean flash .. Also i deleted data from camera. No issues..

Help me choose a ROM for best camera experience.

Hello everyone,
I'm new to XDA(joined just today to get help on this topic) so please ignore any mistakes.
Coming the the topic , I had been waiting patiently for official release of oreo for my phone , hoping that they would improve the camera, but now that i know that official oreo is 32 bit and we're not getting camera2 api i've lost hope from moto.
I'm sick of the oversharpening, artifacts, low DR ,from my current camera app.
And as the title suggest I want the best camera experience(both photos and video) and don't really care much about anything else.
ROM should be stable.
I'm ready to compromise on battery , performance , etc for the better images and video .
P.S. I've never installed a custom ROM on any of my phones or even rooted them. So any help in that regards will also be much appreciated.
Personally, I would stay stock. Oreo will be arriving very soon. This is best camera in my opinion:
https://potterroms.me/Mods/Camera/GCam_Nougat_3.2.045.apk
It's the 32bit mod of gcam, not all features are there but, hdr+ is, and that gives decent photos so long as you don't mind manual focus before taking photos by tapping screen. It does focus auto but can be a bit temperamental. If you manual focus it takes good images.
If you do decide to root etc, first and foremost...get a backup of efs before doing any Oreo flashing.

As u said u r new, Welcome to the XDA forum,
If you want the best camera experience go with Arnova8G2's Gcam port, this of course comes only by installing a custom 64-bit ROM & camera2api. Even I have recently rooted and installed AEX ROM and man what a camera quality! Just spectacular. Just like the above suggestion please take full back up of your rom (with EFS and PERSIST).
To take back up:
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Flash TWRP and Root
3) then back up, take EFS and Persist backups separately, in some cases u just need to flash efs or persist. Also take full backup along with all the boxes ticked.
If things go ur way, u can download and install any 64-bit ROM like LineageOS, AEX, Pixel Experience etc.
I have been using AEX, I am on the ninth cloud since then:laugh: customization+performance+battery life.
All the best.:good:

Mid-Spring Xiaomi MiA1 Ultimate Upgrade List and Best Third-Party softwares to use?

I'm fairly new to using android and now wanting to delve into messing with my phone per se (In other words, I'm a noob). I haven't done so since I last jailbroke my iPhone before.
I'm really interested to wipe my phone's data and start anew and pimp my phone out, to get the most out of the Xiaomi MiA1 and essentially have the Ultimate MiA1. I've read about GCam and custom ROMs and the sorts, but there's just so much that I can't really pinpoint a path for myself. I'm interested to see what you guys have on your phone and what you can recommend to me? I know the "best" is subjective, but I do want to hear what you guys think is the "best" for you even if it isn't necessarily for everyone, it may definitely be for someone
I'm on Android 8.1.0 (skeptical to upgrade if it means losing flexibility) currently.
Also: I want to keep a backup of my data before wiping it up, what app can you guys recommend to do so?
Choose a pie rom for sure!
I've been using the bootleggers rom and it's great
But it's the only one I've tested
you should know that all Pie roms have problem with Gcam autofocus. It can be fixed with changing aspect ratio to 16:9 but it's hit or miss (for example, doesn't work for me at all).

Wait what? LOS16 autofocus on Gcam works fine in my experience without doing anything. Just make sure you are using gapps since they are required (might work with microg but I haven't tested that)
EDIT: I'm guessing you meant stock Pie. Should probably edit that so that people don't misunderstand like I did.

I haven't tried a lot of roms, but from what I tried until now I think stock 8.1 is the best in terms of stability. (I have tried Lineageos 16 unofficial and Pixel Experience 9.0 official).
if you choose to use stock, I do not recommend to pie as stock pie works horribly for me at least. also stock pie has a lot of bugs like autofocus bug in Gcam and downgrading is not that easy.
I use Stock 8.1 November update and I'm rooted with Magisk and TWRP recovery.
for the Gcam I use the recommended Gcam 5 Arnova's v8.3b1: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/GCam-5.1.018-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V8.3b1.apk
If you want the night sight feature you need to download Gcam 6.
also in order to use Gcam you need to enable camera2 api.

Is it worth upgrading from 7.1.1?

I spent a good few years rooting my Android phones, installing ROMs, etc. Quite a while ago I stopped, due to being pretty happy with the performance of this phone, and lack of time/interest in doing it any more. Consquently my phone is running 7.1.1 and ony has a security patch date of September 2017
I realise this is not a good state of affairs. I'm not a coder or anything like that, and I've forgotten most of what I learned about the specifics of this phone a long time ago. If I want to install a new ROM, it's going to mean a lot of reading to bring myself back up to date.
So, aside from my dire security situation, is there actually anything that is going to make my life better by installing an Android 9 or 10 ROM, over and above 7.1.1? Or is it just window-dressing? I'm looking to keep this phone for a while longer yet, and have just ordered a new battery for it, so I thought a software refresh might also be nice. I just wondered whether anyone wanted to offer an opinion on whether it's worthwhile, given it will involve a lot of work for me since I'm so rusty!
Why not just upgrade to stock pie and wait for the Android 10 update coming next year. You don't need to root to get more up to date software.
I've decided it's not worth rooting anymore because I want working Google pay, no bugs, etc. There isn't really anything I need root for and the stock oxygen os is perfect in my opinion.

Just re-read my initial post and I wasn't clear. My phone is rooted/ROMd already. This is why I'm so far behind with software updates, because I got sick of flashing updates all the time. I have a couple of apps that require root, such as an ad-free Youtube with background play (which I'd really like to keep), and Titanium Backup. Aside from those, my phone doesn't really need to be rooted I guess.
I pay a monthly fee to have those features on YouTube. I couldn't go without background play anymore. I would almost root just for that.
As far as if it's worth it, security updates are probably a good idea. I don't recall any major things that Android 9 has that 7.1.1 didn't when I first got the phone a couple of years ago.
I have my banking info to worry about though so I stay stock and keep updated (over the air updates the easy way).
setspeed, I don't know what ROM you are rocking there but for me, on official, pure Oxygen OS I don't find it at all hard to update:
- I download the ROM, Magisk uninstaller, latest Magisk, latest TWRP (I noticed that some blu spark version works best with decryption).
- boot into TWRP
- flash ROM, magisk uninstaller, Makist, TWRP
- boot into sys and re-download whatever Magisk modules I had installed
OxygenOS is only updated every month or so, this procedure takes 10 - 20 minutes at most, so this is not really too much for me to do.
I cannot pin point you the exact big improvements being introduced since 7.1.1, but you can trace the important ones on Wikipedia.
On another note, not having security updates since September 2017 is like walking in front of the shooting range and expecting not to get shot.

Man, i'm basically in the same situation and i make a post just today for the same reason. I want to update and unroot. What can i do? i'm at oreo 8.1.0 and os 5.1.1. Maybe is better first lock the bootloader and then make the OTA? but even if all go smooth which i doubt, how can i restore my backup without titanium without the root? is a f...ing mess
Just dirty flash the latest Oxygen OS (full zip). Then wipe the cache and you should be good to go. That's basically what I've been doing for quite some time with every update (plus Magisk).

Any way to remain on stock, but get the security updates?

I've use ROMs in the past, but never with the Essential phone. In fact my phone has run so well, I've never even factory reset it a single time, let alone put a ROM on it. But with Essential gone, I need a way to keep my phone secure.
I'm wondering what the best way to keep stock android (nothing wrong with stock) but allow myself to get the latest android updates as they come out. In looking at the ROMs there still seems to be some issues with bugs, and since this phone is my daily driver, I'd like it to be as stable as possible.
So is there:
1) A way to get the PH-1 on stock, but still get the important security updates somehow?
2) A rom available (even if android 9) that works for PH-1 that would be super stable but also get all new security updates?
Thanks in advance for any help.

That was the case until Essential went out of business - you could do OTA updates, or download and flash yourself. The stock security updates were only provided by Essential, and the Feb 2020 update was the last one for this phone...

No way to stay on stock & get security updates (well you will get some direct from Google ie the Google Play System Update, the last one shown lower down this page
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/2020-03-01
and can be found in your settings under security, but its only a fraction of patches)
That means your best option is probably the Android 11 GSI when it's out of Developer Preview in a July (?) and hope it's bug free, else Lineage etc .... not that you want custom roms, sorry.

Basically I'm looking for something safe and stable, whether it is ROM or otherwise. Right now I'm stable, but not safe. So you think my best bet is move to Lineage (to become safe) and then switch to the GSI when it is out of developer preview (and stable)?
From what I have read and asked here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/rom-evolution-x-4-1-69-t4073153
This ROM will give you what you are asking for as far as regular security updates are concerned. I have been waiting for Lineage to release an "OFFICIAL" version of Android 10 for our PH-1's but so far nothing. Also I would not mind going on Android 11 but then I do not think that will get monthly security updates either so I am thinking about trying this Evolution ROM out.... I have never worked with a phone with A/B slots so that is my only concern but after reading all the threads I am starting to understand how that works.
Hope this info helps you out.

Guess for stability & functionality it would have to be LineageOS.

I'm on EvoX the only thing tht is not t working very well, is tht if u fast forward or rewind on Netflix ur phone reboots, hopefully fixed next update, but I'm happy with this ROM, the touch lag is almost non existence for some reason, glad they managed to fix tht. Also L1 certification is still there. The 360 camera workes better in this Rom for some reason. The best part is the customization though, so much

Very strange that no one has started a new thread in the Custom ROM section about this... (This being an official release version of Lineageos 17.1) you would think it would be bigger news? There is still only an Unofficial thread... strange..
Anyway IronRoo let me know what you decide to do and how it goes... I am still on the fence as my PH-1 is currently working perfect on stock 10 but it is of course on the Feb 29th security patch... plus I haven't done a custom ROM install since my LG G5 but I hear it is like riding a bike... lol :silly::fingers-crossed:

For LOS, I think we should wait until their server is back, and few more releases come out.
LineageOS 17.1 for Essential is so new, only couple releases, and still in updating state.

Yes, many will agree, though I'm OK with giving it a go but I need to buy a new high quality USB cable as kid damaged my Samsung one and have only a cheap 6" one which I'm not sure I trust to flash without bricking phone.

Just did a quick websearch and a few have tried flashing it reddit and here on the 16 thread, and it's suggested wait for next release (first recovery had issue, but now fixed, but next release of ROM should have a few fixes & Lineage build servers are down so not sure when new release will drop)
