Android P - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Hey fellow Essential Phone owners.
As far as I know the android P beta is available for the Google Pixel devices. So the beta should be treble supported, right?
Is there a chance the beta is flashable on our beloved Essential Phone? I'd love to try out the Android P beta. (I know it'll probably be unstable)
Thanks!
Johannes

It's being worked on. I get my Essential Phone in 3 days. I will see if we can make any more progress then.

Awesome! If there are beta testers needed let me know. ?

Keeping my eye on this!!! This is very exciting!!!

Awesome!! Sounds promising

it works but. it have some problems, the wifi doesnt work, and when you change the size of the screen the system generates a black line when the screen is bigger than 460 p.
it's what I've found so far

i follow the instructions from the page of essential, but i used minimal adb fastboot insted of the Android SDK Platform-Tools.

Just a couple problems with my install.
I'm loving it just a couple minor things with mine. The biggest is it say Chameleon instead of Sprint, and had some issues with network service. I messed with the SIM card a bit and now works fine, still says Chameleon. Second the brightness level, if the phones shuts down so does the brightness, and just push it up again and it works. Have had it for about 2 weeks.:good:

Plenty people on Beta2.
No issues as a daily driver for me on Verizon.

Will loading the beta wipe the phone? Not a problem if it does, just want to know. If so I will backup my messages with SMS backup app.

If you download the OTA version from the Essential developer site and use a current version OF ADB to sideload it to the phone you will not have to unlock the bootloader or lose any data. The first reboot takes time, be patient.

Should Google pay work on the bata? Mine doesn't but I didn't relock my boot loader after seeing comments about people bricking when they do.

Fyi. New bata has been uploaded in Essential's developer area.

Android O Developer Preview Released

Google just released the first Android O Developer Preview! For real, though, it’s here!
Android O will introduce new features by way of background limits on apps (think battery life boost), notification channels (more control over notifications), picture-in-picture, adaptive icons, autofill in apps, and more. Full details on what’s new can be found here.
The new version of Android will run through four preview versions, with preview 2 hitting in mid-May, preview 3 in mid-June, preview 4 likely some time in August, and then the final release in Q3. It’s a similar schedule to last year’s Android N preview program.
The first Android O Developer Preview is available for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Nexus Player.
You can download the Preview 1 images right here. Instructions on how to flash a factory image can be found here. Android O is now a part of the Android Beta at this time because it’s a hella-early developer build that probably isn’t all that stable.

Ive been running it since it was released and havent had any problems so i would say it stable
Flashed my pixel c, very stable until my touch screen went bad...
Coincidence , absolutely not, flashed 7.1.1 and still had the touchscreen issues. Screen goes black every time i touch the screen with my palm or more than 4 fingers on the screen at the same time.
Google has sent me a replacement device Will test again with the new device.
I'm running O-preview since release, for me it is NOT 100% stable, but is doing a decent job.
What does this mean? -> ~ 1-2 reboots a day and spotted a graphics glitch (only 1x).
Not much trouble here, but I use mine as a test device so really haven't put it through its paces. If I were actually using it to do work/play I'd stay on Nougat unless there were a specific O-feature I required.
Desperate for root access, need to get apps tested with O+root, and would prefer not to buy yet another device (5x/6p) to do it.
i wonder if chainfires O dev test superSU includes the pixel C as included devices?
is there now an hdmi out support added via usb-c?
Anyone with a mouse tried to use the built-in file manager? On all 7.x versions the mouse cursor only selects (as if long clicked) files & folders, it cannot open them. Quite annoying, believe it or not...

thanks for the info.
one thing i've noticed is it seems that my O preview is rebooting at times. i can tell because when i pick it up i see the android beta program notice that seems to tacked onto the O boot. i've read that google has said it isn't in the beta program yet so not sure why i get that notice. the reboot issue is the first time for me that the device has exhibited spontaneous reboots but i guess it could be any number of things from apps that are not tuned to O yet to something in O preview itself. otherwise , it is running well with the apps i've used to this point running well.
edit: i have noticed since i posted the above message that trying to uninstall apps that had been installed while using android N causes a lock-up and never finish properly however the apps are no longer listed as being installed. i'm curious if anyone else experiences this behavior.

Android 7 ETA?

Does anyone have any clue when Android 7 will land on the Zoom? It's kinda silly that it didn't launch with it to begin with. But the year older Zenfone's have since received Android 7 and we're still waiting ..
Already launched. Updated today.

I just downloaded the update, I'm gonna leave it charging and updating. :fingers-crossed:
Just updated mine.
Main noticable things are:
- the new notification interface,
- the quick links page allows more icons and has better design, and
- Portrait mode on the camera.
What else called your attention?
Did a factory reset after install. Thought Asus cleaned up pretty well on Nougat for Zenfone 3 but the 3 Zoom's Nougat strips away almost everything. Apps could only get clearer if they replace Memo with Google Keep and not preload Duo.
I think there is more wall papers in wall paper slideshow.
Nougat ZenUI is much better than Marshmallow was.
Greatly appreciate the update. Yes, the UI is still terrible color and design, but Nougat makes this feel tolerable. Especially the ability to remove sooooo much bloat. Glad that I could finally get Google Phone dialer installed and working without the ASUS Call screen. Now if I could set long hold back button to kill I'd be quite happy.
Can you guys get me ota link ?
Use Android Terminal to Run this command
cat /data/data/com.asus.dm/files/tree.xml
Then upload tree.xml from your sdcard
Thanks

Interesting I'm still unable to install Google Phone (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.dialer), stuck with ASUS's app.
Another one that bothers me is the Contacts app. I'm used to Google's stock and I find ASUS option way worse.
Ideas anyone?
I'm using google phone app on mine.
Download the Contacts APK from APKMirror.

My camera app stopped working after the update :\ Even tried resetting it. Other camera apps work fine. Asus support says to reset my phone and otherwise send it in (for a software issue?!). I guess I'll be resetting, but this is the second time support told me to send in the device for a software issue. Can't say I'm impressed.

S8/S8+ Oreo Beta is live!!!

There's 10,000 slots available instead of the Sammobile reported 7500 slots available. Once you click a few agreements, you get in automatically but then nothing happens. You have to force the update by going into Settings\Software update. The update happens normally then. The settings menu has changed quite a bit, Oreo is MUCH snappier (especially reboots), and some icons have changed. The warning in the last screenshot comes up automatically about 20 seconds after each reboot. Good luck getting in!!! :highfive:

The OTA downloads to the /cache folder which non-rooted users don't have access to. I wasn't rooted and I don't think you can be in order to join the Beta. Trust me, Sammobile would have posted it already if this was possible.

You have to be either a T-Mobile or Sprint customer or have the unlocked model. It won't appear for anyone else. It will ONLY show up in the Samsung+ app. If you don't see it on the main screen, use the 3 dot menu on the left to see if it shows up there like the screenshot I posted.

Sure, you could flash the modem if anyone could get the OTA but I'm pretty sure it'd be quite difficult. Since we're not rooted, you'd literally have to catch the OTA transmitting over your WiFi network onto your PC and then extract it. Which reminds me....
@bogdi1988 - Perhaps it's not showing up for you because you're not connected to a WiFi network. Make sure you're logged in to your Samsung account in Galaxy Apps and that all your Samsung Apps are up to date (the only way they update is when on WiFi.) Then check the Samsung+ app to see if it shows up for you. Hope this helps.

I updated hours ago and have rebooted several times since updating. I don't think I'd have a chance of finding the file name at this point. It would've been best to start a logcat right before initializing the OTA.

My "upgrade" did not go well. Turns out that package disabler pro is not playing nice with this update. I kept getting Android system has stopped and couldn't even load the main home screen. I gave up finally and hard reset and resintalled all my apps. I also had a pretty bad problem with the battery draining faster than it was charging on a wall plug. Factory reset was a pain to reinstall everything (still ongoing as I need apps, I reinstall them) but the battery issue has disappeared. Can't tell if WiFi is any better. Opinions on this release would be most welcome.

You're complaining about a third party app that disables stock apps that is NOT updated to support Oreo yet not playing nice with a Beta build??? Absurd. I'm quite sure the upgrade went as smoothly for everyone else as it did me.
As for my feedback, I haven't noticed a single hiccup with the build. It doesn't feel like a Beta. It seems like it could've been a final/official build.

LOL, that wasn't a "complaint" that was an observation. As noted by the no complaint and an observation comment. As far as not noticing it's a beta, would that be between the 15 or so times per minute that the software pops up a warning that this is beta software and may not work as well as expected and may cause problems? That not obvious it's a beta message? Also, the bad battery drain was an issue. That shouldn't happen no matter what.

It's working for me, but it appears to need more forceful gestures than previously. But this might be because I fitted a new screen protector yesterday!
In reading the twitter feed by Magisk dev John Wu, it may come sooner than expected, his last couple of tweets made it seem like he had narrowed the problem down a bit. Also, another user hinted at a possibility of getting it working via an alternate method, but I haven't seen anything else.
But since this thread is about Q, let me say this:
1) I already had dark mode on in Pie.
2) I had root via Magisk, but completely uninstalled it (without locking the bootloader though), so no FDR needed.
3) First attempt at taking the OTA left me in a weird partial (stock) recovery where it said that the OTA could not be applied (I'm paraphrasing), and had the options to try again or FDR. I hit try again and it rebooted back to the same place - I hit try again a second time and et voila! it rebooted to Android and I have Q now on my Taimen. No idea why that happened, and I haven't performed any checks to see if it maybe flipped to the other slot or something (which I highly doubt, as it was extremely quick from when I pressed the try again to when it rebooted and started booting Android Q).
So, first thoughts:
The Google Feed now has a bit of translucency - pretty cool!
Settings is now dark mode
Notifications are also dark, double yay!
Night light is working better - the blue accents in settings, etc now also dull, the way they should.
Redesigned Files app - looks nice! Those items at the top are selectable, individually or in groups.
I've started an album at my GPHotos with screenshots I've taken thus far. See https://photos.app.goo.gl/pdbTnXZNYpQ3xBFS6

Any tweak to use full screen for any apps on OnePlus 8 Pro

Hi all! Does anybody know some tweak ui app to force full screen for all apps? Unable to use the whole screen is very annoying. I've turned off status bar due to screen burning after two months, but the upper line is always empty in portrait or landscape mode.
Thanks in advance!
And peace to all.

I am researching on this. On A10 you can use the magisk module "none display cutout". After install, in dev settings you have an option to completely ignore the holepunch area and swithching to fullscreen with gmd gestures lite will have truly fullscreen and no icons to burn in. Sadly this is not working on a11. Module will flash, holepunch will be ignored. But fullscreen mode will just turn off holepunch area
Thank you very much!
But I would prefer to not install twrp and not to flash magisk as well due to some reasons.
Just hope if exists some tweak app with adb granted permissions, like those for immerse mode.
Yes, thx,a solution would really be nice. I have been wondering about this.

Check out the other OnePlus forums, they're longer established and may have mods which can be adjusted for this OS, or possibly it may even work as is..
Hope this helps.

Really? I didn't get any of that, tbh though I don't think I actually clicked that one.
Find it hard to believe that OnePlus would leave that in.
Would assume that safe mode would still work.
Are you on stable or beta?

Stable. Mine instantly died after selecting double lol. I was very pissed off but i had a quick backup so didn't took much time messing with it. Ob3 users reported to me in a testing group that innbeta this doesn't happen

Maybe it's an ob3 issue? Apologies mate, I had no idea.
Updated my original post to avoid it
You can use the adb command to remove magisk modules in case of bootloop caused by this, happened to me on my 8T. Still looking for a working notch killer for a11

could you post this exact command sir? this is one of the biggest things on paranoid about, they're not being a good version of TWRP for 11
There's definitely a lot of dead space up at top reserved for the humongous status bar icons, a good 0.5".
Should have made them smaller and further up the screen. Like others mentioned this task will be probably zero achievable without root etc.

adb wait-for-device shell magisk --remove-modules
You need to turn your device on after typing that in adb
